"Gold-mine effluents are often characterized by high concentrations of copper, ammonia and cyanide derivatives (mostly cyanates and thiocyanates). While not acutely toxic to birds, this water can be acutely toxic to fishes and invertebrates. In many jurisdictions, the effluent requires further treatment in order to pass a mandatory requirement to be nonlethal to species like the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or Daphnia magna. Using actual mine water, it has been demonstrated that aerated moving bed biofilm reactors will biodegrade the ammonia, cyanides, cyanates and thiocyanates, thereby removing the toxicity associated with these components. By removing copper by precipitation the water can be made to pass acute toxicity tests. Tests have demonstrated that the process is stable between 4 and 25°C, with no significant changes in the treated water composition. Once the biomass is acclimatized, the process is resistant to upsets and requires very little inputs except for phosphorus and air. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that an anoxic reactor can be added downstream of the aerated reactors to remove nitrates if required.IntroductionThis paper will demonstrate that gold-mine effluents, which are toxic to fishes and invertebrates, can be made nontoxic by using a combination of chemical precipitation and biological oxidation.The typical composition of gold-mine effluents will first be described. The applicable legislation will then be introduced, with its requirement that the treated effluent be nontoxic. The toxicity of a typical untreated effluent will then be confirmed, and the sources of the toxicity identified. After that, a number of toxicity reduction treatment methods will be presented, and the selected method will be described.The lab tests that confirmed the efficiency of the treatment method will be presented, with three phases of testing as the understanding of the process gradually improved. Toxicity test results showing that the water is nontoxic after treatment through the temperature range will be presented."

Wet magnetic separation methods for recovering hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines are investigated in this paper. These methods include wet high intensity and high gradient magnetic separations, carrier or "piggy-back" magnetic method, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicates that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines whereas other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behaviour of these minerals with respect to magnetizing field, particle size and temperature is also presented.

A new method of measuring the viscosity of unstable suspensions has been developed, using a Heinz viscometer. The technique was applied to kaolin-water suspensions. Spreads in viscosity with lime additive were measured.

The study re-examines respirable coal mine dust samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It finds that SEM tends to overpredict the abundance of dust from rock strata and underpredict coal content, possibly due to coal-mineral microagglomerates (MAGs). The findings suggest that MAGs could be valuable in improving dust controls in mines.

A physical model of flotation, derived from viewing froth as a kinetic species since it constitutes the carrier of ore particles, not only agrees with and is simulated by engineering math models, but is statistically verified by actual laboratory flotation data. The model couples the mechanical removal of froth using paddles with the more rapid chemical interactions taking place in the bath. It clearly shows that the kinetics of mass removal is dictated by flotation cell dimensions, paddle speed, and, more importantly, froth characteristics. Some conclusions and predictions of the model are presented.

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. Some safety measures adopted by-the principal operating company in the field during the past 30 years of mechanized mining follow: Use of only permissible electrical or compressed-air-operated equipment on other than intake air; providing and using an explosion gallery to test repaired permissible electrical equipment before taking it underground; use of only compressed-air-operated drill augers in preference to permissible

Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

A new pillar strength formula is presented, incorporating a function P of size and shape, which takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive-strength test results as function of P clearly reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

In 1990, Canada produced 69.4 million tonnes of coal of which some 65 million tonnes was produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia produce approximately 55 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces also provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5m to over 8m. Most of the Canadian surface mines are large (over one million tonnes per annum) using modern mining equipment such as shovels, high capacity trucks and draglines. At present the industry is going through another of its up and down cycles but has continued to make impressive gains in productivity. This has been achieved through greater mechanization, better management practices and a will to succeed in a highly competitive world market. This paper presents an insight into the current status of the Canadian Coal Industry and essentially updates the information given by the authors at previous SME meetings.

"Stretching from Norway’s capital, Oslo, to the city of Ski, a new railway line is under construction with a 20 km long hard rock tunnel. This is a major project with high demands regarding quality, cost and schedule. In addition, restrictions concerning locations close to sensitive urban infrastructure require execution with the highest level of precision and expertise. The new double track railway line forms an important part of the intercity rail development southwards from the capital and includes the longest railway tunnel to date in the Nordic countries. With its novel methods and solutions, this project offers a model for future railway project developments in the region. This paper provides general pertinent details and facts relating to this current railway project and includes a description of the project with information relating to concept and design of the tunnels, geological conditions, particular challenges, selected tunneling techniques and contracting strategies. THE FOLLO LINE PROJECT The Follo Line is a new 22 km long double track railway line under construction between Oslo Central Station and the city of Ski. The project is divided into four subprojects, as shown in figure 1. The main part of the project consists of a 20 km long hard-rock tunnel, which will be the longest railway tunnel in the Nordic countries to date.The Østfold Line is the existing double-track railway line running between Oslo Central Station and Ski serving 12 local stations. The new Follo Line will offer a direct service, without stops, between Oslo Central Station and Ski and reduce the travel time from 22 minutes to 11 minutes. After completion of the Follo Line, these two railway lines will, in combination, more than double the capacity for train transport in the region south-east of Oslo."

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

The nation is confronted with thousands of acres of abandoned coal lands. In Pennsylvania alone, these lands have been estimated to cost $15 billion to reclaim (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985). One way to deal with this problem is to provide a mechanism by which the active mining industry can undertake to remine certain of these abandoned mine areas. Remining is classified as reaffecting previously mined areas in order td extract the remaining coal reserves while improving the environmental quality of these lands through land restogation and abatement of pollutional discharges. However, there currently is a disincentive for operators to plan to extract reserves on these abandoned mine lands which have preexisting pollutional discharges. Therefore, they presently avoid them. This is because of the "potentially unlimited liability of post- mining treatment for any discharges that would remain after mining? (Pennsylvania Bulletin, 1985).

Silver has been a much maligned metal in recent years. In the last three and a half years the price has fallen from around US$7.00 -$7.80 to as low as $3.50 this spring. It has consistently under-performed most other precious metals in the past few years, and has fallen to its lowest levels since the late 1940s in inflation-adjusted terms. Perhaps this is beginning to change. Since April, silver prices have outperformed gold and platinum. While this may continue in the years ahead, key questions remain regarding the pace and timing of any future silver price advances. I want to talk about the supply and demand factors that have led silver to its recent position. Also, I will outline a possible path for silver supply, demand, and prices for the next several years. Before I dive into my discussion of the silver market, allow me to explain who I am. One of the points we always make to clients early in a relationship is that, when you are listening to someone's opinions, you always must remember who it is you are listening to, and why he might be saying whatever it is he wants you to hear. So often, people take opinions from brokers, traders, or investment advisors as gospel truth, never stopping to ask themselves two key questions: Is there any reason to believe that this person knows what he is talking about, and, second, is he trying to sell me something, in telling me this.

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. A recent development using XRD techniques, a unique fixed detector, specifically permitting full mineralogical information simultaneously for the first time, specially designed sample preparation and presentation system and Rietveld codes provide a continuous real- time analysis on the true contained mineral polymorphic composition of powder streams such as ore materials, cement, ground clinker or any other mineral stream conducive to XRD analysis. There are several COSMA systems currently operating in the US, Canada, Italy and Australia, proving service and reliability of this concept. The mineralogical information generated continuously in real time is used for automated efficiency, product quality and reduces costs. Quantitative Phase Analysis information is transmitted to the plant DCS via Modbus over RS422 or ethernet. Some limited information is stored in the on-board computers for optional future use at the operator?s option.

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. The hydrophobic character of sapphire surfaces in SDS solutions was examined with respect to the aggregative nature of the adsorbed surfactant phase. It was found that, at equilibrium, sapphire surfaces having adsorbed SDS bi-layers exhibited no contact angle. Conversely, when the adsorbed SDS was found to be mi-cellar in nature, sapphire surfaces developed significant hydrophobic character. The surface states as detected by Fr -IRIIRS conformational analysis were found to be reversible with temperature. The variation in adsorption density with temperature was studied by in situ Fr-IRIIRS. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated to be -1.6 kcal/mole. Although the adsorbed SDS was found to undergo a reversible phase change between 25 and 32°C, similar to SDS in solution, the extent of adsorption was not reversible with temperature.
