The SINTEF SiO-reactivity test, developed by Tuset and Raaness in the 1970?s, is a recognised method of characterising the ?reactivity? of carbonaceous reactants, used in the ferrosilicon and silicon metal industries. Recently, the test has been updated, which has resulted in the development of an extended and improved SINTEF SiO reactivity test. This has included updating the test reactor, control system, data-logging, handling and preparation of carbonaceous materials to be tested and measurement procedure. The scientific basis has been re-assessed, resulting in a new interpretation of the test results. The repeatability of the test has improved significantly, especially through system automation. In the ?old? test, the kinetics of the reaction: SiO(g) + 2C(s) = SiC(s) + CO(g) for a specific carbonaceous material was characterised solely by the ?R10? parameter, the volume of SiO(g) which passes un-reacted through the coke-bed as the concentration of CO in the outlet gas decreases from 18 to 10%. As both the kinetics and obtainable conversion of SiO to SiC for a reductant is of importance to the ferroalloy producer, the new SINTEF SiO reactivity test ranks carbon materials both according to degree of conversion and reaction rate. From research carried out on the test in the past couple of years at SINTEF and NTNU, it has also become clear that some of the reactions taking place in the test reactor are more complex than previously assumed. As an example, it was previously assumed that the condensation reaction of SiO gas in the condensation chamber of the test reactor can be described as: 2 SiO(g) = Si(l,s) + SiO2(s). However, it has been established that the side-reaction: CO(g) + 2Si(l) = SiC(s) + SiO(g) causes approximately 10% of the total volume of CO to react to SiC and SiO2 in the condensation chamber. This means that some back-reaction i.e., the reverse SiO-generator reaction 3SiO(g) + CO(g) = 2SiO2 + SiC also takes place in the condensation chamber. In the new SINTEF test, the %CO versus time curves are therefore corrected in order to describe the effect of the reaction between SiO(g) and C(s) studied i.e., SiO(g) + 2C(s) = SiC(s) + CO(g). A correction-formula for this purpose is presented.

The aim of this research was to study the absorption characteristics of thermally dried fine coal from South African collieries. After milling to ?150 µm and pressure filtration, the samples were subjected to either air drying or thermal drying at 150°C. The samples were then put into a climate box at 28°C and at three different relative humidity levels, namely 30, 60 and 94 per cent. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content of thermally dried coal at a specific relative humidity was lower than that of air dried coal. The relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity is described by 1 ? RH = exp (-KTMen). There was no relationship between the volatile matter content and equilibrium moisture content, but there was an increase in the equilibrium moisture content of the coal with an increase in mineral content. The moisture uptake rate increased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in particle size. A model is discussed that fitted the experimental data and gave a good prediction for changes in the conditions. There was no evidence of greater moisture absorption by thermally dried coal. Mintek has been developing Pt-based alloys for high temperature applications in aggressive environments, for example, land-based turbine engines, to replace the currently used nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs). The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert and has a higher melting point, the Pt-based alloys can potentially be used at higher temperatures. The greater chemical inertness of the Pt-based alloys compared to the NBSAs means that coatings can be simpler, or perhaps not even used at all, depending on the environment. TEM work was done at NIMS, Japan, to investigate the changes in the microstructure o f Pt-Al and Pt-Al-Ir alloys at elevated temperatures using in-situheating up to1100°C. Initial casting trials showed that work needs to be done to optimise casting parameters before commercialisation can take place. Room temperature tensile tests were performed and results were variable mainly due to microstructural differences. The alloy hardnesses were in the order of 300-350HV with ultimate tensile strengths of ~800 MPa and elongations of less than 10%. Remediation of the environmental (and social) disturbances caused by opencast brown coal mining in the past in north-west Bohemia isa priority for state environmental policy. In order to provide a concept for full restoration of land following disturbance by opencast mining, a special interdisciplinary project supported by a grant from the Czech Ministry of Environment was started in 2000. The initial stage of the project was intended to summarize and evaluate the findings and the works carried out in connection with various reclamation activities in the afflicted area over a period of more than 50 years. The main aims of the three-year project are to make use of the best available landscape environmental management knowledge in order to harmonize the ecological, aesthetic, productive and social functions of new valuable landscape, including the recovery of historical continuity and an understanding of ?landscape memory?. The basic landscape functions were assessed on two different scale levels. On a large scale, the relevant attributes were investigated over the whole area of the Sokolov brown coal basin (220 km2). The data and experience acquired were used to define large-scale guiding principles for the rehabilitation of a post-mining landscape. On a small scale, the basic characteristics and functions of the landscape were analysed in the Litov-Chlum model area (2 km2). The information derived from this analysis was used to formulate a small-scale approach for the rehabilitation of the model area and also to define general methodological principles. "Blast furnace performance depends strongly on the coke reactivity index(CRI) and coke strength after reaction (CSR) properties. An innovative and cost-effective method, known as the Salem Box Test, has been developed to prevent the mass production of inferior coke unsuitable for blast furnace use. This method consists of coal carbonization on a micro-scale and involves charging approximately 18 kg of coal blend in a stainless steel box, carbonizing it together with coal cake in the plant coke ovens, and testing the coke produced for CRI and CSR to determine its suitability for blast furnace use. Only coal blends that yield coke with CRI <25% and CSR >64% are permitted for mass production, and other coal blends are either rejected or the blending ratios adjusted in an attempt to upgrade them. The experimental results reveal that, for a given coal blend, the quality of coke produced by the Salem Box Test is comparable with that produced by bulk production, indicating that the test is acceptable as a screening tool for regular use. The present paper describes the methodology and application of Salem Box Test to predict the suitability of coke for blast furnace use at JSW Steel Limited, Salem Works (JSWSL), and illustrates its advantages in adjusting the coal blending ratio to produce superior coke, in detecting coal contamination, and in preventing bulk production of inferior coke."

The expected curtailment of activities within the gold-mining industry by the closure of the more marginal mines, and the shortening of the life of the industry as a whole as a result of rising costs and/or an uncertain gold price, are factors that are bound to harm the South African economy in a number of ways. The industry has no option but to regard the gold price, which is determined on the world market, as a given quantity. The remaining ore reserves al tend to be of a lower grade and/or to be found at greater depth. Therefore tighter control of working costs would seem to be almost the only option open to the industry. Working costs can be divided into two broad categories: costs emanating from the environmental characteristics of the orebody, and costs emanating from the general inflationary environment in which the industry has to purchase its inputs. Working costs stemming from the physical environment also fall into two categories: those relating to the grade of the orebody, and those resulting from working at increasing depth and temperature, together with the need to pump increasing quantities of water. The industry is both capital- and labour-intensive in absolute terms, since it requires large inputs of labour as well as of capital. It is limited in its scope to adjust its production function by becoming more labour- or more capital intensive, and is dependent on a large labour force, which cannot easily be replaced by capital inputs. On the other hand, large amounts of capital are required for investment in shafts, development, machinery, and equipment. Since the early seventies, the working costs of the South African gold-mining industry have increased at an annual rate that was significantly higher than the general rate of inflation. This rapid rise in working costs has caused some mines to find themselves in a difficult profit position. At times, the gold-mining industry has even been compelled to restructure its cost/revenue relationship rather fundamentally by revising the grade of ore worked sharply upwards or downwards, as the case may be. The rise in the gold price since 1972 has made it possible for the industry to introduce significant changes in its Black wage policy. The main aim was to increase the permanency of the Black labour force and to encourage local Black workers to join the industry. At the same time, significant increases were also experienced in the cost of machinery and stores, as well as of capital, mainly as a result of inflation. In the study on which this paper is based, the author attempted to measure the influence of environmental factors on working costs, using the physical consumption of electricity as a criterion for measurement. He found that the usefulness of this criterion in relation to factors such as depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped was invariably more than neutralized by the effects of greater productivity and economies of scale. The effects of these environmental factors on the working costs of the industry could therefore not be determined to any degree of accuracy. It seems that good progress is being made with the development of capital-intensive forms of technology aimed at coping with rapidly rising working costs and other effects of increasing depth. Techniques are also being developed to improve rock-cutting procedures and to eliminate the use of explosives in order to introduce a continuous mining process. On the whole, the gold-mining industry seems to be more sensitive to general inflationary pressures than to the cost effects that are associated with depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped. Greater control is possible over physical environmental factors such as the grade of ore mined, temperature, rate and nature of development of a mine, and adaptation of the daily working cycle to a continuous mining process. Wolfe and others hold the view that the industry will lose control over labour costs as a result of the &apos;sharp increase in wages and the growth of Black trade unions. However, the use of more capital-intensive technology will allow the industry to reduce its labour force, and a smaller, better-trained, and more permanent labour force will enable the industry to cope with the increasingly difficult physical environment and higher wages.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

Historically, linear and lognormal krigings were first created to estimate the in situ mineral resources of blocks. Nonlinear geostatistics and indicator kriging were subsequently developed to evaluate also the portion recovered when applying a cut-off on selective mining units (SMUs) within blocks. In practice these methods are generally based either on the Gaussian model with a transformation generalizing the lognormal case or on the indicators above cut-offs. Very often the indicator approach is simplified by kriging separately each indicator, and when starting from a continuous variable, a practical advantage of the discretization into classes lies in the easy treatment of a zero effect and of the high values. However, a number of so-called isofactorial models have also been developed for a discrete or continuous variable, where the full cokriging of indicators (i.e. disjunctive kriging) simplifies to the separate kriging of factors. Moreover, these models are equipped with a change of support, allowing a consistent estimation of recoverable resources on SMUs. Min-Max Autocorrelation Factors (MAF) analysis of the indicators offers a new approach for indicator modelling. In particular the first factor, the one with the highest spatial continuity, can help in choosing the type of model. For example a monotonic experimental first factor can be used directly as the basis of a discrete diffusion model, unless a continuous diffusion model such as the Gaussian model can be used on the original variable. This approach is illustrated on a uranium deposit mined selectively: estimates of recoverable resources by discrete disjunctive kriging and uniform conditioning in a Gaussian model are compared locally to short-term estimates based on two areas densely drilled.

Several large falls of ground occur annually in the narrow, tabular stopes mined in the Bushveld Complex. These falls comprise safety risks and cause substantial production losses and compromise efforts to increase productivity. Underground observations in conjunction with instrumentation sites were used to establish the strategic parameters required to describe the rock mass behaviour of shallow-dipping stopes on the Bushveld platinum mines. Existing rock mass rating systems were evaluated using the observations and instrumentation results. None of the current systems adequately described all the relevant geotechnical conditions. Thus a hybrid of several current systems was developed, and the proposed system is discussed in the paper. The new rock mass rating system is termed the ?New Modified Stability Graph? system and follows the method originally described by Mathews et al.1and revised by Hutchinson and Diederichs2.Changes have been made to some of the tables provided by Barton3and to the stress analysis suggested by Hutchinson and Diederichs2. In addition, the logistical regression analysis has been applied to databases, formed using the suggested analyses, for three support resistances and risk levels established.

Traditionally, South African shaft sinking operations have used electric detonators for the initiation of blastholes. Globally, the trend in shaft sinking is to use the shock tube and detonating cord (STDC) initiation system, with value adding benefits. In pursuing this global trend, Cementation Mining of South Africa in partnership with SMX have ventured the STDC route. This paper explores the work carried out to date, and identifies a number of benefits to be gained by using the system.

The feedwell performance in gravity thickeners and clarifiers relies on the efficient mixing between solid particles and flocculant to achieve effective flocculation, as well as energy dissipation of the incoming feed stream. A population balance-computational fluid dynamics (PB-CFD) model has been developed and validated to provide new insights into the operation and performance of industrial feedwells. In particular, the PB-CFD model enables the efficacy of the main functions of a feedwell to be investigated for a wide range of feedwell designs and process conditions. This paper describes how PB-CFD was used in the design and development of a new feedwell concept for the flocculation of particles in a solid-liquid stream. The patented feedwell design includes an upwardly converging flow diverter to create two separate compartments for energy dissipation and flocculation. PB-CFD simulations of this simple and easy-to-retrofit feedwell design illustrate a superior performance in terms of flocculation and energy dissipation compared to typical feedwells over a wide range of flow conditions. The potential benefits include reduced flocculant consumption, better de-aeration, greater stability and the ability to cope with a wider variation in volumetric throughput, better flocculation and fines capture, and a more symmetrical discharge that may also offer improved overflow clarity in some applications. The new feedwell design has been installed in a full-scale thickener at an Anglo American Platinum site in South Africa. A number of operational factors complicate this application, but indications are that the new feedwell has led to improvements in stability and underflow properties.

To remain at the leading edge, in any business, depends on accurate but flexible design thereby allowing operational managers to provide alternatives to improve their operations. The ultimate goal is to deliver to plan, with optimum economics. Mining is no different, with falling prices and escalating costs, improved margins become the focal objective. There are many ways to achieve this, ranging from operational efficiency improvements through production scenarios to planning initiatives. Of all, planning usually receives the least attention, yet it is the area of most influence on the NPV of the reserve. With computer technology, numerous concepts and iterations are possible thereby closing the gap between optimal and actual design. This paper discusses the application of the split shell design at the De Beers Venetia open pit in South Africa.

Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. Ein DOM(Diskontinuitätsorientierungsmessung)-Bohrsystem, das durch Grundlinien markierte Bohrprobelog extrahieren kann und die relativen Lagen und die Orientierungen der sich im Bohrloch verbreitenden Flächen bestimmen kann, ist entwickelt worden. The leaching behaviour of nickel?copper matte in an acidic?copper sulphate solution during the repulping stage at Impala Platinum Refineries has been studied. The base metal recovery process consists of a matte repulping stage prior to a series of pressure leach stages. Therefore, the repulping stage is basically an atmospheric leach stage in which the matte containing mostly Niand Cu is leached in copper-spent electrolyte from the tank house, resulting in dissolution of nickel and precipitation of almost all the copper. To understand the nature of the leaching process during this stage of the operation, the effects of temperature stirring rate and matte particle size on the rate and extent of base metal dissolution and copper rejection from the solution have been investigated. The leaching mechanism of the matte in the investigated system is alsoproposed.

An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.
