In this paper, the authors performed experiments in the Denver and Leeds laboratory flotation devices at the University of Pretoria at various particle sizes to evaluate the performance of the devices. Quartz was used in a single mineral system at discrete sizes fractions, -25 μm, +25- 45 μm, +45-75 μm, and +75-106 μm. Hydrodynamic analysis, based on dimensionless power and Reynolds numbers, indicated that the Leeds cell required higher power input to achieve comparable flow conditions. Specifically, the Leeds cell exhibited an average power number of 1.03, whereas the Denver cell averaged 0.77 within the same impeller speed range of 1000 rpm–1500 rpm. For comparative flotation performance, impeller speeds were calibrated, resulting in operating speeds of 1200 rpm for the Denver cell and 1400 rpm for the Leeds cell. The cells performed similarly at two coarser-sized fractions. However, some deviations were observed in the finer particle size range. The -25 μm (fine) fraction initially achieved a recovery of only 15%. An additional reagent dosage was required to enhance the recovery of this fraction significantly. These findings highlighted the influence of particle size on flotation recovery. For all experiments, the Denver laboratory flotation cell outperformed (defined by higher recovery) the Leeds device, while still operating at a lower impeller speed. This advantage can be attributed to its impeller-stator design and air dispersion features, effectively overcoming slurry resistance and resulting in superior flotation performance compared to the Leeds cell.

(Visitor) The levels of serum vitamin C in the blood of mineworkers were determined on the first and fifth days of the normal heat-acclimatization period (i.e., before and after exposure to heat) and again after I, 2, and 4 months of underground employment. Supplementary vitamin C was administered to the men during the heat-acclimatization period. Six groups of 20 men featured in the study and, except for one of the two 4-month groups, all the values were obtained after a full shift of underground work. It was found that adequate levels of serum vitamin C were maintained during the heat-acclimatization period, and the 250 mg of vitamin C given daily to each man must therefore be regarded as sufficient. The serum vitamin C decreased significantly with time of exposure to underground conditions, showing that the vitamin C utilized during heat stress is more than that provided in the men's diet. At the end of 4 months, not a single subject had more than 0,4 mg of serum vitamin C per 100 ml, most of them having only 0,3 mg per 100 ml; 90 per cent of the men had had more than 0,4 mg per 100 ml during the acclimatization period. It is therefore recommended that the mineworkers' diets should be supplemented with 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C per man per day.

Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

Many open pit mines are now being mined at very significant depths, often at depths far greater than was originally planned. Even deeper open pits are also being planned, to depths that would be considered deep by underground standards. The heights of the resulting rock slopes are usually beyond the current experience and knowledge base. The exceptions are, perhaps, some very high and steep natural rock slopes. These natural rock slopes are also assuming greater significance owing to pressures of infrastructure development and consequent exposure of such infrastructure to the hazards of slope failure and landslides. Developments in road and rail infrastructure are also resulting in higher rock cuttings. Present understanding of the mechanisms of slope behaviour and failure for high slopes, and for slopes subjected to high in situ stress conditions, appears to be lacking. If the mechanisms of slope behaviour are not well understood, the validity of commonly applied methods of analysis of the stability of such slopes may be questionable. The papers in this specialist International Symposium, including papers on mechanisms and monitoring techniques, and case studies will contribute to the understanding of these issues. The Symposium has attracted good international participation, from both the attendance and authorship points of view. We are very grateful to all presenters and delegates for taking timeout of their very busy schedules to come and share their knowledge and we hope that all will benefit from this event. Thanks are due to the Organising Committee and to the members of our International Advisory Panel for the ideas, the contacts and the badgering, and to the Secretariat of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for the organisation.

"The transition metals tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) are of significant importance, for example in the nuclear energy sector where they are used as cladding materials, as well as in capacitors and specialized materials. For these applications a high-purity metal is needed. The separation of Ta and Nb is always a challenge since they are found together in nature and have similar chemical and physical properties, resulting in costly and laborious separation processes. A technology that has been used successfully for the separation of these metals entails solvent extraction (SX)1. While separation was achieved in a previous SX study using a sulphuric acid (H2SO4) medium with the extractants diiso-octyl phosphinic acid (PA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), due to the absence of speciation data for Ta and Nb it is not clear how the separation occurred.One method that might be suitable for determining the speciation of a reaction is molecular modelling. Calculations based on the densityfunctional theory (DFT) are now used not only for light elements and small molecules, but also metal complexes, heavy metals, and especially metal separation in SX2. In this study the aqueous phase used during SX was investigated by studying periodic systems of Ta, as a metal and in salt form, when it is in contact with H2O and H2SO4. The results were used to predict the reaction mechanism occurring during SX. Results showed that (i) in a 1:1 acid-water ratio, the deprotonation of H2SO4 was endothermic, (ii) in a 1:5 ratio deprotonation was exothermic forming HSO4 -, and (iii) in a 1:10 ratio double deprotonation occurred to form SO42- exothermically."

Rössing Uranium Mine operates a recovery circuit with continuous ion exchange followed by solvent extraction. Serious organic degradation problems were encountered during 1985/6, 2000 and 2005 in the solvent extraction plant. The preferential loss of the tertiary amine extractant was observed during the above-mentioned period. Previous investigations revealed that the tertiary amine was breaking down to nitrosamine, which cannot take part in the exchange reaction with U3O8. A reduction in the redox potential of the solvent extraction plant feed to below 500 mV halted this preferential loss. A lot of effort has been made to try and understand the actual mechanism for nitrosamine formation. Current understanding for the degradation is that formation is due to high nitrates on the strip side of the circuit emanating from nitrates from the precipitation process using ammonia. It is the current belief that pH lower than 3.7 on the strip side results in loading of nitrates onto the solvent. If oxidizing conditions prevail on the extraction side of the solvent extraction circuit, the tertiary alamine will then degrade into nitrosamine. This phenomenon is yet to be established and verified. It has, however, been established that the above process is brought about the following conditions ?High redox potential greater than 550 mV predominately caused by a high Fe3+/Fe2+ratio (4:1) ?Perception that if Fe2+<0.5 g/lit will contribute to high redox ?High concentrations of NO-3 in the conc eluate (feed to SX)/ammonium sulphate (NO-3> 4 g/l based on historic values) ?Presence of Mo as a catalyst ?Tests also have proved that the presence of nitrous acid in a concentration of 1 g/lat 550 mV leads to formation of nitrosamines from alamine.

Zircon (ZrSiO4) is the most frequently found zirconium ore occurring in heavy mineral sands, from which it is extracted as a co-product in the production of ilmenite and rutile. Estimated world reserves of zircon are 124 million tonnes, highest in Australia (around 56 million tonnes), followed by Mozambique (15 million tonnes), India (12.6 million tonnes) and South Africa (12million tonnes). Zircon finds its application in ceramics (54%) and refractory industries (14%), which account for 68% of zircon?s total world consumption of 1.20 million tonnes. The rest (32%) is consumed in foundry, TV glass, zirconia chemicals and other applications. It is a long recognized feature of the zircon industry that supply is totally dependent upon the concurrent production of titanium minerals. But in recent years, several new developments such as the discovery of zircon-rich mineral sands in Australia, the continuing trend of higher prices of zircon and increase in trade of lower quality zircon have changed the scenario. These factors have prompted more intensive efforts to increase the recovery of zircon, particularly in the process for separating zircon from alumino-silicate minerals. Tata Steel?s proposed heavy mineral sands deposit contains on an average 10% heavy mineral content and 15% slimes of the size below 63 micron. Mineral assemblages of the resource contain65?70% ilmenite, 4?6% rutile, 4% zircon, 16% sillimanite and other minor minerals. Wide size range and tenacious iron oxide coating are the inherent characteristics of this deposit. High concentration of sillimanite among the non-magnetic heavy minerals and heavy surface coatings on the minerals are challenges for high recoveries and production of premium grade zircon. This paper outlines various process steps that were taken at pilot plant stage to produce zircon of premium grade and subsequently develop the appropriate flow-sheet.

Occupational illnesses and diseases tend to be chronic and are generally characterized by temporary or permanent physical dysfunction. With the exception of some symptoms, they are not generally visible. Therefore, safety overrides health in mining because occupational ailments take years to develop and management observes less physical trauma, if they witness anything at all. Occupational health issues need to be addressed systematically, encompassing all aspects of the interaction of employees within the work environment. Risk assessment is central to the management of occupational health. This should not be seen as a complex process and may involve little more than simply considering the consequences of one?s actions before starting work. Competent risk assessment provides the starting point and defines the scope of further action. The objectives and final use of an occupational health risk assessment determine the process and the method by which it is carried out. The occupational health risk assessment is therefore a systematic procedure to identify potential health hazards, evaluate the extent of exposure subjectively and/or objectively, and to establish the need for, and effectiveness of existing control measures. Furthermore, it facilitates the drafting of occupational exposure monitoring, medical surveillance and occupational health education programmes. Various models for conducting occupational health risk assessment provide step-by-step guidance for the identification and assessment of significant occupational health hazards and assist in producing suitable and significant occupational health risk assessments. The paper gives an overview of an occupational health risk assessment model based on the basic principles of occupational health and the legislative requirements, which will simplify the occupational health risk assessment process and ensure a sound base for the development of all other occupational health systems.

Centrifugal slurry pump station and deposition sites are a common feature of many mines and mineral processing plants. Yanacocha Mine has completed the design of a pump station consisting of two trains of four pumps each. A number of trade-off studies was conducted to optimize the pump station design. The most significant of these was determining the drive types for the slurry pumps. The pump station duty can vary considerably due to the number of deposition points round the disposal site. The standard solution to this problem on a multi-stage pump train is to install one pump with a variable speed drive to control the pump station output by varying the speed of this pump and stopping and starting other stages. However, there are a number of negative impacts associated with this approach. These include head losses through pumps that are stationary or ?wind-milling?, different wear life on pumps that are running and pumps that are stationary, and slower response to the control system with the possibility of hunting. The use of variable speed drives on all the pumps was considered as an alternative to the standard solution. The factors considered in comparing these options were the control and operational differences, the pump efficiencies and absorbed power, the expected pump wear life, the impact on pump maintenance and the cost of the drive options. For this project the option of using all variable speed drives was selected. The paper presents the following aspects of the study: ?Description of the various options investigated. This includes a discussion on the required duty and the drive options. ?Technical comparison between the options. ?Description of the factors influencing pump performance and life.

The SILAG Material Tracking System MTS monitors and controls the complete material flow throughout the plant - and even companywide. The customized system developed by Siemens especially for bulk material handling applications enables companies to track bulk material from the mine to the harbor, to the steel mill or to the power plant. All relevant material data is available at every single step of the material’s journey. SILAG is an open, scalable system based on Windows NT / 2000. Using standard interfaces of Windows NT, like API, ODBC, SQL and socket technology, the system is very flexible and can easily be tailored to meet different requirements. SILAG can be used as a stand-alone solution or - if complete plant control and visualization is required - as a component of a fully integrated automation system with the Win CC HMI system and the PCS7 process control. In contrast to conventional material tracking systems, SILAG offers many advantages. - The Material Tracking System is an object oriented, online to the process, linked system. All changes in the plant during operation e.g. selecting another conveyor route, start and stop etc. will be automatically detected and will influence the calculation. - The systems is able to split and blend material (quantity and quality).Measurements of tonnage, volume or quality analysis can be linked online to the system. Each movement of material is monitored by the system and leads to online recalculations of the images and databases. - All material data is based on 3D-stockpile images, which are calculated by an internal mathematical model based on quantity and quality information. - If a laser scanner is available on a stockyard machine it can be taken to update the profile directly from the piles. - Efficient control and report functions are available on each, free selectable point of the total plant.

The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. In mine production scheduling problems are well-known, where most are categorised into deterministic and non-deterministic NP-hard problems because of their complexity. Many researchers have attempted to solve the problem by applying various optimisation techniques. While using traditional methods they observed extreme difficulty in solving highly complex problems. In the 1990s, many researchers addressed long-term production scheduling (LTPS) by using simulated annealing, the genetic algorithm, the tabu search algorithm, and the ant colony algorithm. These algorithms are known as the meta-heuristic algorithms, and have proved to be the most efficient algorithms for solving LTPS thus far. The firefly algorithm is one of the best methods for visualising problems related to LTPS, and provides the best possible optimisation. It is one of the simplest methods, and easy to apply to any NP-hard problem. The experimental, and comparison with other recently published algorithms shows that the proposed algorithm is feasible, and is an effective approach for long-term production scheduling problems. The results indicated that a better solution is obtained by the proposed method, compared to other methods in terms of cumulative net present value, and average ore grade. Additionally, the CPU time via the proposed model is roughly 2.52% higher than the other method.

Submerged arc furnaces and electric smelters are applied in numerous metal and slag production lines. Particularly in ferroalloy and non-ferrous metal production, like silicon metal, platinum group metals, calcium carbide, and copper, the units are an essential part of the production technology. Most of these electric furnaces are considered to be highly energy-intensive units. The high level of required electrical power is defined by the process. SMS developed several measures to reduce the overall electrical energy consumption of these metal production lines. In particular, the following measures contributes to a lower energy consumption: improved electrical efficiency with intelligent design and application of components, minimizing the heat losses from the furnaces with a balanced cooling/refractory systems, minimization of process steps (such as elimination of agglomeration), recovery of energy, process optimization (resulting in higher metal yield) and the achievement of higher recovery rates, enlarging furnace capacity to reduce heat losses, and maximizing the power-on time. This paper gives an overview of the above-mentioned solutions.
