The effects were studied of the presence of comminuted flint on the rheological characteristics of chalk slurry pumped through a 92-km long pipeline from Kensworth Quarry to Rugby Cement Works in the UK, and their impact on the pipe flow conditions. Flow curves were measured for 63different chalk slurry samples; these were described by the Bingham plastic model. In addition to observing trends in the yield stress parameter and plastic viscosity in the model with variations in both flint concentration and dispersant additive, use was also made of slurry viscosity values at a reference shear rate of 60 s-1for the pipe flow. It was found that chalk slurry viscosity decreases with increasing flint content up to 10% by weight for a given additive concentration, and increases with increasing additive concentration from 0.7 to 1.0%, for a given flint content. The pipeline flow regimes were identified using the critical value of the Bingham Reynolds number for laminar flow breakdown. For Bench 11 (quarry bottom) chalk slurries, it was observed that all sections of the pipeline operate in the turbulent flow regime for the nine different formulations and for the three pipe diameters used along the pipeline. However, this was not always the case for Bench 1(quarry top) slurries. It was therefore recommended that chalk slurries prepared from Bench 1 should not be used because of the strong likelihood that laminar flow conditions will occur owing to the presence of higher clay concentrations within this bench. This, in turn, will lead to an unsafe operation of the pipeline because of the potential for coarse particle settling. Likewise, blending of chalk from Bench 1 with the lower benches such as Bench 11 could be problematic and this requires further experimentation.

An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

The application of kriging in assessing the area rainfall in a weather modification experiment is complicated by the presence of many zero rainfall recordings on a given day, and the fact that the variograms seem to be quite different for the rainfall on different days. The main mineral components of the so-called heavy sands (or black sand) are the titanium, zirconium and iron-bearing minerals, rutile, zircon and illmenite, accompanied by various minor and trace amounts of silicates or phosphates, often present together with the rare earth elements. The investigated samples originated from Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) in South Africa, which is jointly owned by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, the largest titanium slag producer in the world. The present study focused on the characteristics of samples originating from various points in the separation plant. The heavy-mineral fractions and concentrates of a representative suite of samples were investigated using various analytical techniques to establish the differences in morphological and elemental compositions at the different points in the plant. These techniques included: reflected light microscopy, micro-raman spectrometry (MRS), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX) and structural and chemical analyser (SCA). All samples comprised a heterogeneous population of zircon and rutile grains with diverse physico-chemical properties, expressed by large differences in colour and trace element chemistry of single grains. The elemental composition proved the presence of the rare earth elements that appeared to coexist with both Ti and Zr minerals. The percentage of grains hosting inclusions, such as anatase, monazite, quartz, spessartine, augite, epidote and actinolite, varied for each sample and could be uniquely characterized by Raman investigations. I believe that more experimental results could have been given, together with more details of the modifications made to the plant that enabled it to operate with the success mentioned in the paper. One important omission is a definition of the word fines. As pointed out elsewhere!, this word is used very loosely.

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. This study has investigated the efficacy of the gravity beneficiation method based on gravitation and centrifugal forces for manganese ore. Powdered samples of manganese ores from the Unagad deposit in Mongolia were analysed for their element and mineralogical composition using ICP-MS and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The analysis presented the mineralogical compositions of the ores as hydro goethite, manganese minerals and magnetite, gangue minerals as quartz, albite, orthoclase and microcline of manganese ore. Manganese minerals are white in colour and have micro-veinlet, fine grained-aggregates associated with gangue minerals. The most important manganese minerals are hausmannite, pyrolusite, rhodochrosite, and manganosite. The composite of feed containing 17.31 % Mn and 36.3 % SiO2 was processed in a shaking table. In the experiment, a concentrate assaying 41.37% Mn was obtained from this composite with 65% recovery. In another experiment, f80=0.074 mm particle size ore was used in the MGS concentration test. A concentrate containing 38.34 % Mn with 75.2% recovery was produced in this experiment. The results showed that it is possible to obtain concentrate through gravity processing of manganese ore, which is an economically beneficial process for producing a product of a standard requirement. Geometallurgy represents an integrated approach to mine planning and operation whereby the naturally occurring ore variability and its effects on all key downstream activities in the mine life cycle are considered. Process mineralogy is one of the key components of this integrated approach. This paper focuses on understanding some of the mineralogical variability across the Swartberg Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide ore in South Africa and its consequent effects on flotation performance. This process mineralogy project is motivated by the planned changeover and expansion of the Black Mountain Mines concentrator to process solely Swartberg ore compared to the run-of-mine blend currently being treated at the plant. Eight samples spanning the main lithological units of the ore body are described using quantitative mineral-textural data and bulk sulfide batch flotation performance to establish five process mineralogical or geometallurgical units comprising: quartz-pyroxmangite-magnetite, quartz-amphibolemagnetite, quartz-magnetite, garnet-magnetite-quartzite and mica-quartzite ores. Important mineralogical characteristics affecting Cu, Pb and Zn recovery, grade and selectivity specific to the different ore samples are discussed. Ultimately, the use of ore-specific process mineralogical and geometallurgical knowledge allows for better mine planning and plant optimisation. It is commonly accepted that the energy consumption for comminution within mineral processing is responsible for around 3% of the global electrical energy usage. However, it was clearly noted that inside mills, less than 1% of this energy efficiency is actually consumed for particle size reduction. Therefore, monitoring of grinding parameters and modelling of product particle size distribution (e.g. characterised by the 80% passing size P80) play an essential role in operating costs of a mineral processing plant. Several empirical models have been introduced for the prediction of the P80. Since in the industrial scale usually a few numbers of grinding variables are monitored, these models cannot identically be used in plants. In addition, these empirical models do not always indicate the magnitude of correlations between milling variables. This study proposes to introduce the Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC) as an intelligent model for exploring linear and nonlinear relationships between grinding variables and P80 for an industrial scale data assessment. HSIC can rank variables based on their importance and help to select the most effective one for the generation of predictive models. HSIC modelling through various monitored grinding variables (ball charge, feed input rate, F80, power draw and work index) of an industrial plant indicated that F80 as a feed property has the highest effect on P80 of the ball mill products. Modelling results highlighted that the P80 can be accurately predicted, based on effective variables by using a HSIC model. These outcomes showed that HSIC as a powerful modelling tool can assess the relationships between monitored grinding parameters, select the most effective grinding parameters and satisfactorily predict the P80. The vertical stirring mill’s fine grinding equipment is affected by the operating conditions during the grinding process. The grinding media has a great influence on the energy consumption and particle size distribution. This paper investigates the fine grinding performance of nano-ceramic balls and steel balls of the same weight for magnetite by a wet grinding process in a vertical stirring mill, where 15 mm nano-ceramic balls and 12 mm steel balls are used as grinding media to carry out batch grinding tests. We have observed that the newly qualified particle content of the nano-ceramic balls is higher than steel balls of the same weight at the same specific energy. The reason may be the advantage of a greater surface area and volume filling rate with the nano-ceramic balls. Moreover, the specific energy of nanoceramic balls is less than steel balls of the same weight under the same grinding fineness. In addition, energy efficiency indicates that the nano-ceramic ball has a higher energy efficiency than a steel ball of the same weight. This is due to the light bulk density of nano-ceramic balls. The application of a nanoceramic ball in a vertical stirring mill will improve iron ore grinding performance. The rate of dissolution of sulphide minerals is frequently interpreted in terms of the passivating behaviour of a layer of material on the surface. This interpretation has driven research to identify and possibly remove this layer from the surface, and thus yield higher rates of dissolution. The identification of such layers has proved difficult, with different researchers claiming different compositions for possible layers. An alternative framework has been pursued by the author and co-workers, who have argued that the rate of dissolution is governed by the electronic structure of the minerals which give rise to their semiconducting properties. Researchers sceptical of this approach have argued that semiconducting properties are only important in highly pure substances. In this paper, we review the electronic and semiconducting properties and discuss how they impact dissolution behaviour. The paper describes work undertaken to identify the influence of the matrix structure on the metal dusting rate of stainless steel alloys. Specifically, the difference in metal dusting rate between austenitic and ferritic stainless steels of similar chromium contents was investigated. The alloys were exposed to metal dusting conditions and their performance compared by weight loss, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The specific gas mixture used for all the tests were 18.9% CO-79.1% H2-2% H2O at 650°C. For austenitic stainless steels, Types 304, 321, 316, and 316Ti were compared to two ferritic grades, namely Types 430 and 441. The resistance of the ferritic grades was found to be significantly better than that of the austenitic grades. This was attributed to greater permeability of chromium through the matrix structure to maintain the protective oxide scale. The results will be used in the development of novel alloys to combat metal dusting.

VERSLAG- REPORT No. 1365 STUDIES OF INCIPIENT FUSION IN THE SYSTEM CHROMITE- MgO- Al2O3-SiO2-C 5th January, 1972 Investigator: N. A. Barcza SYNOPSIS A fundamental study was made of twelve chromite ores by use of a thermobalance under atmospheric and reducing conditions. It was found that their thermal behaviour under atmospheric conditions can be related to the mineralogical composition of the chromite spinel and the gangue. The overall mechanism of reduction with solid carbon over the temperature range of 1 200 to 1 500°C was shown to be diffusion of carbon through the reaction product. The effects of additions of fluxes and variations in particle size on the kinetics and mechanism of reduction were determined. It was shown that carbon monoxide does not reduce chromite ore up to temperatures of 1 550 °C, and it can therefore be eliminated as the diffusing reducing species. However, the reaction product of reduction, namely a mixed carbide of iron and chromium, was shown to be an effective reducing agent for chromitc ore, while also facilitating the transport of carbon. VERSLAG - REPORT No. 1380 AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MODEL FOR THE LEACHING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE 10th January, 1972 Investigators: C. R. S. Needes, M. J. Nicol SYNOPSIS A correlation between the rate of leaching of UO2 and the electrochemical properties of the oxidant concerned has been derived. This correlation is found to be borne out by experimental results. Certain effects observed in UO2 leaching and hitherto unexplained have been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. Experiments have shown that the mixed potential of a UO2 electrode gives a measure of the rate of dissolution of UO2. Its significance to commercial practice is discussed. CONCLUSIONS (I) The dissolution of UO2 in the presence of a number of oxidants can be explained in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. (2) The mixed potential of the UO2 electrode is a measure of the rate of UO2 leaching. This principle could be used in the control of industrial leaching operations. (3) A simple treatment has provided a mathematical basis for a fundamental correlation between the rate of U02 dissolution and the chemical properties of the oxidants concerned. This relation has been found to agree well with experimental results. (4) A number of phenomena occurring during the leaching of UO2, hitherto not explained in a satisfactory manner, have now been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism.

Flotation is a mineral separation technology that uses the surface hydrophobic difference of valuable minerals and their associated gangue minerals to separate them. The flotation collector adsorbs on the valuable mineral surface to improve its hydrophobicity, and metal ions are usually used as activators to enhance the collector adsorption. Different mineral surfaces show different charging properties and adsorption behaviours with the collector or metal ions. Moreover, the order of adding metal ions and the collector also show significant and different flotation performance for the same mineral. The adsorption or flotation behaviour or both are governed by mineral surface chemistry, such as surface charging and reactivity. In our recent studies, force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to study the surface charging and adsorption mechanism of metal ions and collectors. By preparing collector-functionalised AFM tips, AFM can directly measure the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface to determine the anisotropy of mineral surface reactivity. The preparation of collector-functionalised AFM tips provides the foundation for further study of the activation role of metal ion in the collector adsorption. The application of AFM for force measurement in the surface chemistry of mineral flotation can provide important information on developing flotation reagents and lays the foundation for the specific regulation of mineral surface characteristics. This paper describes pilot-plant tests on the recovery of apatite from a hitherto untapped material. This materialhydro- separator overflow-is very fine (80 per cent smaller than 45 µm and 32 per cent smaller than 10 µm). . The pilot-plant tests proved that the recovery of apatite from this material is economically and technically viable. This was confirmed by plant trials, which, in the early stages, produced concentrate assaying 36,6 per cent P2O5 at a recovery of 65,5 per cent.

Brigadier Ralph Shelton Griffin Stokes D.S.O., C.B.E., M.C., who died in England on 24th February, 1979, at the age of 96 years, was one of the most colourful personalities in South African mining history. After the South African War, in which he served as a trooper, he joined the Crown Reef Mine as an assistant assayer (1902), and was to serve the mines of the Corner House Group intermittently for the next 57 years until his retirement in 1959.

The aim of this study was to develop an in-house tensile testing procedure that would yield accurate and reproducible parameters as input material properties into computational models for numerical simulations of the mechanical behaviour of TM380 mild steel. To achieve this objective, we reviewed the ISO 6892:2009 tensile testing standard along with reported good practice guidelines. Tensile tests were conducted on a dog-bone shaped TM380 mild steel specimen with strain gauges attached on either side, to monitor alignment and measure strain, using three different types of tensile testing machines. Parameters quantified included yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity. The values of these parameters were found to be in agreement with the values supplied by the manufacturer's specification and showed minimal variations between laboratories. Thus it can be concluded that the tensile test procedure used resulted in accurate and reproducible results. The strain values calculated as per standard were in disagreement with those determined from extensometer and strain gauges and resulted in lower elastic modulus values. This confirms that the current testing procedures require the use of long-range strain gauges or extensometer to determine the strain. A chemical analysis was conducted to verify the specification by the manufacturer. The specimen was found to be fairly homogeneous with minor sulphide inclusions. The micrographs reveal a pearlite and ferrite structure typical of mild steel, and the fractographs show a dimpled surface typical of ductile fracture, which is an attribute of mild steel.
