Aluminium AA1200 was laser alloyed with a combination of nickel and titanium diboride using different weight ratios. Chemical reactions took place with the formation of different phases. The characterization of the alloyed surfaces was carried out by x-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopes. The alloyed surfaces are composed of the initial phase of Al-Ni dendrites and eutectics of TiB2/Al and TiB2/Ni distributed on the initial phase. Experimental results obtained showed that Al-Ni intermetallics brought about a significant increase in the hardness property of Al; however, these intermetallics are highly brittle and prone to fail by brittle fracture or stress corrosion cracking when put in service. The addition of TiB2 brought about a reduction in the formation of the seintermetallic phases. A microhardness increase of over 10 times the hardness of the substrate was achieved. Financial evaluation is necessary to investigate the viability of implementing and/or utilising new technology in mining projects. It establishes a techno-economic base for decision-making and justifies capital expenditure. This paper aims to present a monetary appraisal of the electric rock drilling system in a typical feasibility project, whose purpose is to increase the production rate. The in situ environment is a platinum orebody, and the stoping operations occur in UG2 reef. The results are a function of production requirements, technical parameters and financial outlay of the drills. The costs involved in implementing and operating electric rock drills are assessed to the current method of drilling, namely the compressed air operation. A comparison of the electric and pneumatic rock drills in terms of financial outlays for drilling and service requirements, peripheral equipping and training is discussed. Other factors that affect the business case are technical advantages, safety and risk management and the environmental objective of the company.

The quality of the concentrator plant process water is crucial for high performing mineral flotation circuits. Significant metal recovery and concentrate grade losses have been noticed particularly in more closed water loops. The recovery and quality losses have started to emerge mainly with decreased freshwater usage and because of changes in tailings management towards tailings thickening, paste, or dry stacking. These changes result in shorter, closed water loops with a rapid build-up of harmful components with negative impact on the beneficiation process. Consequently, water quality has a direct link to decreased product value and sales returns. Complete cleaning or water blending might not be the right way to achieve high recovery and high-quality products. Instead, the key is to understand what kind of water qualities are needed for the flotation of specific minerals. In this study harmful substances in various plant water streams were removed and/or modified by pilot-scale dissolved air flotation. Batch-scale mineral flotation tests with the untreated and treated water were then performed by using fresh ore samples and the plant’s own laboratory flotation procedure. The results indicate that because of dissolved air flotation, the mineral flotation recoveries were enhanced by 1‒3.3%. High-profile failures of tailings dams illustrate the significant safety challenge they pose. The decant pond of such facilities plays an important role in their mechanical stability. This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of the decant pond. The Sentinel-2 mission has a revisit time of 5 days and the data used herein has a spatial resolution of 10 m/pixel. We considered two water-detection metrics: the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. Implementation of the method at a South African platinum tailings dam illustrates the capabilities and limitations. Public, sub-metre resolution true-colour imagery served as validation data. There is good agreement between pond area measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery. These results suggest the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 data to supplement the monitoring of the decant pond.

The usual figures quoted for water usage in South African gold mines are 1 ton of water used per ton of rock broken, which represents a consumption of 4000 litres of water every second. Owing to the limited sources under ground water, the high cost of surface-water supplies, and the environmental problems of effluent disposal, water IS recycled continuously for underground use. This paper reviews the various types of water treatment and why water needs to be treated. The uses of lime and some flocculants are considered, since much of the mine service water requires only simple neutralization and clarification. Where mining depths necessitate the installation of underground refrigeration plant, more stringent water requirements must be met, and where plant performance is to be maintained, the prevention of system scaling and corrosion is necessary. The families of chemicals added to provide such protection are outlined, together with a description of the mechanisms of control.

A theoretical comparison is made between point-attack and wedge-shaped picks in regard to their cutting efficiencies in coals having different strength characteristics. With specific energy as a criterion of cutting efficiency, it is shown that a mathematical expression can be derived for the assessment of the relative performances of these two groups of picks as a function of coal-strength parameters and pick-tip angle. The ratio of tensile to compressive strength of coal is found to play a significant role in the determination of relative cutting efficiencies, lower ratios favouring the use of point-attack picks.

The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year&apos;s income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year&apos;s figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

Multiphase process design and optimization often depends upon the rheological properties of sludges and slurries. In practice the task of determining these important properties is usually carried out by removing small samples from a process line or process unit and performing tests with proprietary bench-top analysers near to site or at a remote laboratory. Sampling will remain an important procedure in industrial processes, but there is also a strong case for augmenting the routine information obtained using an in situ sensor, as suggested below. ?Sampling protocols can result in extensive turnaround periods from sample collection to the generation of results. The delay can have an effect on a variety of factors such as product quality, process operability and efficiency. ?Sampling of toxic or radioactive material can prove an even greater challenge to minimize human involvement. ?Removal often changes the rheology of a specimen, and might lead to incorrect conclusions being drawn about the condition of a sludge. ?Sludge and slurry in a containment suffers a gravitational gradient, so that a removed sample should be paired with its location, particularly in the vertical dimension.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. Pressure hydrometallurgy operations require vessels to be lined with an impermeable membrane for corrosion protection and one or more courses of refractory or ceramic brick. Examples of unit operations that utilize composite lining systems include pressure oxidation autoclaves, sulphide precipitation autoclaves, chloride leach reactors, flash vessels, cyclone separators, and direct contact condensers (heater vessels and quench vessels). The refractory lining must satisfy multiple requirements: it must thermally insulate the membrane from process fluid, be structurally stable, provide erosion resistance, be chemically compatible with process fluid, and provide an economic service life. New hydrometallurgical processes are pushing the pressure, and temperature with each new generation of plants. A fundamental understanding of all factors affecting the mechanical stability of the lining system is essential as lining designs move further away from the industry?s experience base. The method of designing a refractory lined vessel is examined taking into account the impact of irreversible chemical swell, operating factors, design factors, and installation factors. The effect of geometry and incorporating additional degrees of freedom to the analysis is explored using two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of these additional degrees of freedom on the results of the one-dimensional model are discussed. Keywords refractory lining design,autoclave, finite element analysis.

Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.

Kumba Iron Ore?s Zandrivierspoort (ZRP) magnetite-haematite project aims to mine and beneficiate a magnetite resource with low contaminant levels to produce from 1 Mt/a to 2.5 Mt/a product, which will be either a concentrate, micro-pellets for direct reduction, or blast furnace pellets. Anglo American Technical Solutions Research conducted a number of piloting campaigns to validate the process design flow sheet, demonstrate process performance, and to generate data for use as a design basis. Secondary to this, the pilot plant was to produce approximately 7 t of magnetite-haematite concentrate with low enough SiO2 to be used as feedstock for pelletizing studies. The pilot plant achieved 34.2% mass yield, at 69.0% Fe, 2.2% SiO2, from an IsaMill grind of 80% -45 µm. This product quality will compare favourably to other leading direct reduction (DR) pelletizing concentrates. However, two-stage comminution to 80% -75 µm and beneficiation of ZRP ore will produce a blast furnace (BF) quality pelletizing concentrate, indicative quality being 67.6% Fe and 4% SiO2, at higher mass yields. An economic evaluation between producing a DR and a BF pelletizing concentrate will have to be conducted prior to finalizing the concentrate production flow sheet..

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluents is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10mg/l cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a pre-neutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40g/l NaOH. A pre-neutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.
