"The copper industry has had a long and interesting history associated with leaching, involving vat, dump, heap, and in situ methods. The Bureau of Mines has also had an interest in copper leaching and has researched the techniques of solution recovery, particularly concentrating on in situ methods. In situ mining is a relatively low cost method and has been proven commercially successful by nine operations. It has been most commonly used for final recovery in old workings at the conclusion of conventional mining operations.This report brings together information about 10 commercial in situ operations as well as 14 experimental projects. These 24 sites comprise most of the in situ copper mining activities that have taken place in the United States. Background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, and recovery and processing are provided for each operation. Production data and tables summarizing the engineering statistics for each operation and an extensive in situ mining bibliography are included. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to summarize the documented in situ copper leach mining activities that have taken place in the United States. It was prepared to provide a source of engineering and operating data upon which future in situ copper mining activities can be based. Twenty-four different sites are discussed. These are all of the sites that are known to the authors from the extensive in situ copper leach mining bibliography developed at the Bureau's Twin Cities (MN) Research Center (Appendix B).In situ copper leach mining activities fall into the following categories:1. Commercial operations with ore body preparation.2. Commercial operations in old mine workings.3. Experimental programs.Ore body preparation includes such activities as blasting, block caving, and hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracing) specifically to fragment the ore body. Operations in old mine workings include those done in open pits, worked out block caved areas, and backfilled stopes where leaching is done as an afterthought to conventional mining. Experimental programs are small-scale tests of the feasibility of a commercial operation. Some of these programs did not progress to the point where leach solutions were applied to the ore.Each operation (locations shown in figure 1) will be discussed in terms of background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, recovery and processing, and engineering and production data. Information was collected from published reports, communications with company personnel, and site visits."

[Iron oxides, when reduced at temperatures below 900° form a dark gray substance, very porous bait otherwise in almost the same form as the original particles. In the temperature ire range of 1,000 to 1,100° the product is pertly sintered but still shows the outlines of the original particles. Those products are known as "sponge iron." At temperatures of 1,100 to 1,2000 the metallic iron begins to flow together and to a semifused, pasty, porous mass called a "bloom," which can he worked under a hammer to form a product similar to wrought iron; it contains slag inclusions and is too low in carbon to make steel. If the temperature is 1,300 to 1,300°, part of the iron will fuse enough to absorb more carbon. The dissolved carbon lowers the melting point and still more carbon is absorbed. The melted portion acts a flux for the unmelted metallic particles until the entire mass becomes a high-carbon fluid known as "cast iron." Sponge iron was probably the form in which the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge3 developed into a low-shaft furnace known as the "high bloomary," in which iron eras produced in the form of a pasty mass. In 1340 the first blast furnace was built in Belgium. The greater part of the iron was made into wrought-iron blooms by crude puddling processes. Charcoal was used as the fuel until tie latter part of the 17th century when coke was used in England. In 1865 Bessemer built his first converter in. England, and within a few years the Siemen's regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England. Enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron followed. The idea of "direct processes" for the production of iron arid steel has persisted throughout all this time. The production of steel from sponge iron has theoretical advantages over the present-day standard methods, and handreds of so--called "direct processes" have been proposed or tried during the past century.4]

Test equipment that simulated frictional impacts between coal-cutter bits and mineral inclusions at a coal face during operation of a continuous coal mining machine was used by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory to study the incendivity of impacts between various rocks, metals, and hard-metal alloys in an explosive mixture of air-7 pct natural gas. Quartzitic sandstone was found to be the most incendive of several rocks tested. Limestone concretions from a coal seam, known locally as "sulfur balls," sparked furiously but were not incendive. Among the metals tested, the type of steel used in commercial coal-cutter tools was the most incendive material tested. A l7-4PH stainless steel was less incendive and appears to be the most promising high-strength steel alloy, reasonably economical, for use in coal-cutter bits. Some hard-metal alloys, primarily titanium and zirconium diboride composites, were also evaluated as possible replacements for the conventional cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide used in the tip of coal-cutter bits. The metal-bonded diborides were generally less inc endive but more brittle than the conventional tungsten carbide. Carbonitride coatings on tool bits were also tested but found to have no advantage. The source of ignition during frictional impact between metal and rock was studied. Immediately after impact, a yellow flash was observed and a smear of metal near its melting point occurred on the rock. This hotspot on the rock, rather than the yellow flash or sparks or metal fragments, was observed to be the cause of the ignition.

The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient. points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of, life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment,, through improved types of lightning arresters,, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures. LIGHTNING PHENOMENA In 1751, Franklin proved that lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition, to define the various phases of the phenomenon. THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu's was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. The Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining (hereafter referred to as the Panel or the TSP) was established by Section 11 of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act). The Panel was charged with providing “independent scientific and engineering review and recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition and fire retardant properties of belt materials in underground coal mining.” The TSP was impaneled by the Honorable Elaine L. Chao and commenced its work on January 9, 2007. At this first meeting, Mr. Richard E. Stickler, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, asked the Panel to report on many issues including how recent technological advances could be applied to atmospheric monitoring systems, point-type heat sensors, current state of fire-resistant vs. fireproof belt materials, and belt fire suppression systems to improve miner safety. In addition, Mr. Stickler asked the Panel to review belt air velocity limitations. The Panel members attended 12 days of public meetings over a nine-month period. Three of the public meetings were scheduled for the Panel to hear from technical experts and those persons or organizations interested in providing input. The meetings were held in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania with emphasis on belt fires, belt maintenance, belt flammability and toxicity, ventilation, and escape issues; in Salt Lake City with emphasis on ground control and convergence issues; and in Birmingham with emphasis on fire detection, sensors and atmospheric monitoring systems. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel, representatives of the major belt conveyor manufacturers and a representative of the National Mining Association provided discussions at the Coraopolis meeting. In Salt Lake City, Utah, MSHA district managers and ventilation specialists, a member of the Aracoma Mine No. 1 investigation team, a representative of the Bureau of Land Management, and industry and consulting representatives of the Utah Mining Association and the Colorado Mining Association made presentations. In Birmingham, Alabama, atmospheric monitoring system representatives, NIOSH researchers, representatives of coal mining companies, and UMWA workers from two Alabama mining companies made presentations. In addition, a staff member of The Center for Regulatory Effectiveness also presented comments to the Panel. In conjunction with the meetings in Salt Lake City and Birmingham, three-member subcommittees of the Technical Study Panel made field visits to the Skyline Mine, the Aberdeen Mine, and the Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 4. The mine visits were scheduled to see first-hand the mining conditions under which belt air was being utilized as an additional source of intake air for working sections.

This circular is one of a series dealing with the exploration, equipping, and development of mining properties, prepared and published by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with various mining and exploration companies in the United States and Canada. This series of papers will supplement an earlier one which covered the methods and costs of mining and milling at a large number of producing mines. The present paper describes the exploration, equipping, and developing of a group of 18 claims remote from rail transportation, and the transport of equipment and heavy supplies for a distance of 120 miles by tractor over ice and winter roads, and of men and lighter supplies by airplane.

Reduce the hazards to which mine personnel are exposed by providing safer procedures for removing dragline wire rope terminations. Background The termination points of wire ropes used on draglines consist of a wedge and socket that lock the rope in place through friction. These components must be separated when the wire rope is changed. At present, the cannon method is the most common procedure used to accomplish this. However this method, using a small cannon and primer (detonator) cord to propel a steel projectile that will knock the wedge out of the socket, has the potential of causing injuries to mine personnel and damage to equipment. The Bureau of Mines, has devised safer, and equally efficient methods of removing wire rope terminations. The Bureau began by studying the cannon method, its merits and draw-backs. Safety guidelines were then developed for the cannon method, and two alternative methods-the pendulum ram and hydraulic pusher-were devised and tested. The Cannon Method The steel projectile used to separate the wedge and socket in the cannon method was found to be very effective. However, the method poses the inherent hazards of any explosive de-vice-hazards that could be increased by lax work procedures. There is no strict uniformity in the manufacture of the cannon or in the work procedures used in the mines employing it. Hazards could be reduced, or even eliminated, with adaption of certain manufacturing and work-procedure guidelines, such as 1) making the cannon and projectile de-signs, as well the work procedures used, uniform, 2) ensuring separate loading of the charge and detonator with insertion of the detonator through a separate port, 3) connecting electrical firing circuits only after the charge and projectile are loaded and the cannon is placed in its final firing position, 4) using approved detonating devices, 5) anchoring the cannon before firing and, 6) placing armor netting over the cannon before detonation.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in July, 1931, as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3134, under the title of "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1931." Changes in that list were authorized in August, September, October, November, and December, 1931, and January and March, 1932, as published in Reports of Investigations 3140, 3147, 3150, 3155, 3158, 3161, and 3163, respectively. Control surface stream loss by identifying and selectively sealing water loss zones in stream channels overlying underground mines. Approach Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys, coupled with stream gaging, are performed within a stream channel to identify saturated fracture zones associated with loss of stream water. This information is used to target locations for the injection of expandable polyurethane grout. The grout is injected two to three feet beneath the surface of the strcambed, across each loss zone, to seal the fractured strcambed and restore stream flow across the damaged area. How It Works Multiple zones of infiltration (natural and induced) normally exist in stream channels overlying mined areas, causing water handling and/or acid drainage problems in the mines as well as loss of stream flow. It is typically difficult to accurately locate these loss points. Therefore, Conventional methods of stream repair, such as using plastic membranes or clay and rock rip-rapping, are applied to long lengths of a stream channel. The two step approach developed by the Bureau of Mines First quickly and accurately locates loss zones using electromagnetic ground conductivity survey and gaging instruments. Conductivity is measured at fixed spacings (typically 25-50 ft depending on the instrument and desired observation depth), Ground conductivity increases when saturated conditions exist at depth. These apparent flow loss zones are confirmed by gaping, to eliminate possible effects due to unobservable metal debris adjacent to or buried in the stream sediment.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of tungsten and chromium, separately and combined, on improving the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of vanadium. Binary and ternary vanadium-base alloys were prepared and tested for oxidation resistance and tensile strength. Softening occurred with less than 1 weight-percent of either tungsten or chromium, followed by strengthening with higher alloying contents. Vanadium alloys containing up to 9.8 weight-percent chromium or 14.1 weight-percent tungsten were more resistant to oxidation in air at 600° C than unalloyed vanadium. For the alloys with 12.20 weight-percent chromium or 14.56 weight-percent: tungsten, the maximum concentrations used, the lower yield strengths were about twice that of 38,600 psi for the unalloyed vanadium. Recrystallization temperatures for these alloys were 100 and 150° C higher, respectively. Alloys containing both chromium and tungsten had properties similar to those of the vanadium-tungsten alloys.

Part Two of this report is based upon six working memoranda prepared during the first half of 1972 at an early stage in our work for the Bureau of Mines. This work presents preliminary performance estimates of baseband voice and narrowband through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau for operational/ emergency mine communications applications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; on theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau and on semi-empirical models which describe the intelligibility of voice communications as a function of the frequency variations of the signal-to-noise ratio across the voiceband. This work examines the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, and uplink transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/ meter (high) were used; the former figure for both voice and narrowband calculations and the latter for narrowband calculations only. Examples of high, moderate, and low, surface and subsurface, harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low-levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. The effects of simple voice spectrum shaping techniques on the intelligibility of through-the-earth voice communications are examined, and indexes of intelligibility more broadly based than signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Finally, a means of overcoming the affects of 60 Hz noise and its harmonics which are the largest contributors to typical audio frequency in-mine noise, is suggested. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

"In the course of the Government's Fuel Economy Survey of its own power plants, studies and tests have been made of various oil-burning equipments under power-plant boilers. There are now many types of burners being offered in the relatively limited field of power-plant use. The majority of the types used may be grouped into two general classes- those using steam to effect the atomizing of the oil, and those using mechanical means.Burners using steam have had the most prominence in this field for a long period. The mechanical atomizing type of burner successfully applied on shipboard, however, pointed to a possible betterment in land work. The vision presented itself of a burner that would need no steam for atomizing that would permit of air inlets or registers compactly arranged as a part of the entire burner, and that would only require the natural stack draft usually available in land boiler furnaces. Hence, rather recently there has been much development along this line, resulting in various types of burners.In Table 1 are grouped test items chosen from many tests showing representative analyses of the products of combustion obtained with various burners installed in various types of furnaces. In all these tests the burners were handled by experts and represent practically the best attainable for that particular arrangement. The boiler efficiencies ranged from 70% to 80%. It will be noted that the burners using steam for atomizing were able to secure slightly better 002 and less 02 without the presence of CO."

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. "INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. Testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. The Mining Division, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, does the actual investigative work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Division, O. C. The village, on State Highways 101 and 123a, is 12 miles northeast of Bellows Falls, Vt. The deposit is reached from South Acworth over a gravel-surfaced road and about 1,000 feet of good truck trail (fig. 1).The nearest railroad siding is at Cold River, on the Boston & Maine Railroad, where there is also a fairly modern, but now idle, feldspar mill."

Preventive maintenance practices are listed in the manufacturers' instruction books. In general, equipment that requires frequent and extensive preventive maintenance is generally the most costly. The manpower spent on these frequent trips to remote areas is such that it is usually better to invest in a more costly system which requires little preventive maintenance. The best preventive maintenance for the system is a good installation. 7.2 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections With any system, periodic inspection is required because of the corrosive atmosphere and adverse conditions that exist in underground mines. These inspections can spot potential trouble in the system. Repair or replacement at that time averts the possibility of losing effectiveness of all or part of the system. 7.2.1 Cables Approximately once per month all cables in the communications system should be inspected for kinking, chafing, cracking, wear, stretching, or other signs of physical abuse. Particular attention should be paid to cable glands at the entry or exit points to the various units in the system, where the cable goes around sharp corners, in the vicinity of holding cleats which may be clamping the cable too tightly causing potential damage, and across the areas where the cable is exposed to physical damage from outside sources, such as equipment or falling objects. If a cable is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. It is mandatory that the ground leads and connections to carrier current phones be thoroughly inspected and maintained in good condition, since considerable hazard may exist to the operator or equipment if a ground connection is broken. 7.2.2 Pager Phones The most readily available test set to determine if a pager telephone is operating correctly is the pager phone itself. The following physical check of the system can be performed at any phone station. 7.2.2a Listen Circuit Remove the handset from its cradle and listen to determine if the circuit is functional, as indicated by the presence of noise or conversation on the line. If no noise or voice signals are present at the handset receiver, take the following corrective action: 1. Operate the handset press-to-talk switch several times. Any corrosion on the contacts of this switch may cause a receiver to be temporarily inoperative. Repeated operation may clear the condition. 2. Open the cabinet and see if the battery cables are properly connected and are making firm contact. Check the handset cable and its connections in the cabinet of the pager phone, and see if there is any evidence of a break in the cable, corroded contacts, or poor connections. 3. Remove the handset receiver earpiece by unscrewing it counterclockwise (to the left), and remove the receiver from the socket. Examine the handset cavity; in some units, a patch of cotton batting or floss is used as a barrier to reduce acoustic feedback in the handset. If the cotton patch has absorbed moisture, remove it and replace with a crumpled ball of soft rubber, stuffed just far enough into the handset so it will not touch the receiver or switch terminals. 7.2.2b Page Circuit and Talk Circuit Push the page switch, squeeze the handset press-to-talk switch, and call any other phone. Release the page switch

This chapter analyses the parameters influencing initial design of communication systems, for new mines and upgrading existing systems. Paragraph 5.2 outlines those variables that must be taken into account during the design stages of a new wired phone system. Recommended features, general requirements, and how they can be implemented are treated in this section. Paragraph 5.3 describes ways of improving or extending the range of trolley carrier phone systems and pager phone systems already installed in the mine. 5.2 New Phone System Design The task of designing an adequate communication, control, and monitoring system for an underground mine must be addressed on a system basis. In addition to insuring that effective voice communication is established, any new system should take into account present and future requirements of remote control and monitoring functions. Chapter 4 illustrated the drastic savings in response time that can be realized when remote control and monitoring are integrated into the overall communication system. The importance of including control and monitoring in the overall design plan for any system cannot be overemphasized. Because each mine is unique, and thus usually has its own special operating characteristics and communication requirements, there is no such thing as "the one best system" to meet the requirements of all mines. The optimum communication, control, and monitoring system for a mine must be one that has been tailored to meet the special requirements of that particular mine. Factors that must be considered during system design include- a. Type of mine and mining methods (low- or high-seam coal, deep hardrock mine, stope caving, longwall, room and pillar, etc.). b. Maximum number of working sections. c. Expected mine growth rate and eventual maximum size. d. Haulage methods (tracked trolley, diesel, belt, etc.). e. Underground power distribution system (dc, ac, or both). f. Features desired (two-way radio paging, private line capability for emergency use, etc.). g. Redundant or backup systems for use during outages of the normal system. Although no two mines are alike, the following items have been established as the main characteristics desired for any underground communication system: 1. Multiple Communication Paths to Outside--the objective here is to give all telephones a second method of communicating with the surface. 2. Audible Emergency Signaling--the communication system provides the main means of alerting miners during emergencies. The system should include means to broadcast distinct audible signals for emergency signaling. Initiation of these signals should probably be controlled from. a central outside point, such as a surface control room. 3. Emergency Override--provisions should be included to permit any conversation to be overridden with emergency communication. 4. The Bureau of Mines has been promoting health and safety in mining since its establishment in 1910. One area of research covers methane control in coalbeds; this report describes a multipurpose borehole used for both degasification and the production of commercial-quality gas. The multipurpose borehole was drilled into a barrier pillar, and seven horizontal degasification holes and one pressure point hole were drilled radially out from its perimeter. On January 28, 1974, after 505 days of degasification, a compressor was installed to the exhaust stack of the multipurpose borehole (2), and pipeline--quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of February 4, 1975, over 171 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company. The in situ pressure at a depth of 200 feet into the coalbed and the average gas flow and water flow from the degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psig, 1,200,000 cfd, and 6.8 gpm, respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psig. Five hundred days later, the corresponding values were 620,000 cfd, 0.15 gpm, and 10.5 psig. Daily flows have been as high as 800,000 cfd, and as low as 360,000 cfd, during the last 500 days. On February 4, 1975, after 882 days of degasification, 576 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the Pittsburgh coalbed; apparently a much larger area of virgin coal is being degasified than is defined by the holes. This study indicates that horizontal boreholes drilled into a coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove gas from the Pittsburgh coalbed.

Bureau of Mines studies were made on the sensitivity of several ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures to bullet impact. The experimental work was done with one military rifle and two high-velocity sporting rifles with a variety of ammunition. For the three rifles used, the order of efficiency in initiating detonation in AN-FO mixtures was 220 Swift >300 Weatherby Magnum >30-&apos;06. The velocity of the bullet was found to be a decisive factor in the initiation. The sensitivity of various materials studied increased as follows: Clay-coated prills with 4 percent oil <fresh surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil <surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil and aged 270 days <crushed prills with 6 percent oil <very low-density, surfactant-coated prills (micronized), with 4 percent oil.

This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the Bureau of Mines and bound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrow- band through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up- link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.
