Relative enthalpies of cuprous iodide (CuI) were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpy measurements between 298.15 and 1,396.3 K were made with a copper-block drop calorimeter. The temperatures of transition were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Reversible transitions were determined at 643 K with a standard enthalpy of transition [(6Htr)] = 0.74 kca1/mol, at 679 K with a [6Htr = 0.65 kca1/mo1, and at 868 K] with a standard enthalpy of fusion [(6H~) = 1.895 kca1/mol.] Tabulated values are listed at selected temperature increments from 298.15 to 1,600 K for the standard relative enthalpy (HO -H298), heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)!T]. The enthalpy data are also given in the form of equations and combined with thermodynamic data from other investigations to derive values of standard entha1pies of formation [(~HfO)], Gibbs energies of formation [(6GfO)], and logarithms of the equilibrium constants of formation (log Kf).

Untreated timber in a mine or elsewhere may fail prematurely because it may "rot out before it wears out." If such timber is treated with a satisfactory preservative, decay will be retarded for many years, and it's serviceable life will beg prolonged to several times that usually obtained from untreated timber.4/ Treated timber has many advantages, and although it has been used extensively by railroads and other large consumers of structural timber, the relatively small use in mines seems strange indeed. Timber does not decay if it is kept dry, cool, and well-ventilated or if it is kept constantly wet or sumberged in water. At a mine in Canada the temperature in the upper levels was only 44° F., and the timber did not decay. As operations deepened, however, warmer ground was opened, and, with high humidity, conditions favored timber decay. The life of untreated timber may be only 2 to 3 years under such conditions.

To rapidly limit and interrupt high dc fault currents with minimal arcing in the mine atmosphere. Approach Design a dc switching sys-tem which uses a pressurized, liquid metal-filled, change-of-state device combined with a conventional interrupter and commutating switch. Direct Current Interruption Switching and interruption of large direct currents imposes severe loads on fuses, contactors, and circuit breakers in mine power systems. This problem is much more pronounced with de than with ac because of the lack of a natural current zero in dc. Dc interruption is characterized by persistent arcing that can foul contact tips and con-tribute to interrupter failures. To reduce maintenance and prolong the service life of these units, a commercially viable dc switching system has been developed by the Bureau of Mines through a research contract with the University of Pittsburgh. This system rapidly limits and interrupts high fault currents when used in combination with conventional interrupters.

from 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig. 1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig.2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91 %, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from 1990 to 1996.

This report, one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the technology of titanium, describes the development of an electrorefining cell from which cathode deposits up to 30 inches long can be produced. Data show individual deposits to be homogeneous, comparable from top to bottom, and not varied in quantity or quality of metal over the entire length of the deposit. Investigations concerned with various diameter cathodes showed that cathode current efficiencies were materially reduced with cathodes less than 2 inches in diameter. Deposits produced on 1/2-inch-diameter cathodes showed cathode current efficiencies of 19 percent and on 1-inch cathodes, just over 22 percent, whereas deposits produced on 2- and 4-inch-diameter cathodes showed about 70-percent current efficiencies. A series of 20 deposits on 4-inch-diameter cathodes was produced under simulated production operation. The average current efficiency, based upon a divalent ion, was 72 percent with 11 1/2 pounds of metal produced per cycle of operation - 98.8 percent of which had a Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) of 80 or less.

Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: • Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These “lith-graphs” are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. • Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. • Weekly “Quality” meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.

Improve underground long-hole drilling efficiency and safety by developing a lightweight, easily transportable drilling pust that can be adjusted to fit a range of mine opening heights. Background Standard one-piece commercially available steel posts weigh approximately 10 pounds per foot. Transporting these posts underground and carrying them over obstacles and through small mine doors is very difficult. Because the length of a one-piece post cannot be adjusted, variations in mine opening height at the drilling site must be accommodated. This is accomplished by stacking several wooden blocks to form a base for the post, resulting in a dangerously unstable drilling setup. The only alternative to this unstable setup is to obtain a longer post. There problems can be reduced by the use of a two-piece telescoping aluminum post having a 3-foot adjustment range in 6-inch increments. The two-piece extendable post will be easy to transport and carry underground. It will fit any opening height within its adjustment range. One large wooden block is used as a base and one cap block is used at the top to bear against the mine roof. This arrangement results in a stable, rigid setup.

This study was conducted to determine the patterns of heat transfer to water-cooled copper crucibles during vacuum arc melting. Values of heat flux from the ingot to the crucible were determined during nonconsumable electrode vacuum arc melting of zirconium and during consumable electrode vacuum arc melting of titanium) zirconium) and steel. The results of these studies con-firm the existence of a high thermal resistance between the ingot and the crucible wall which results from the shrinkage of the ingot as the metal solidifies. Maximum heat flux occurs near the top of the ingot where maximum values of heat flux of 1.4 X 106 Btu/ft2 hr were observed during small-scale consumable electrode arc melting of zirconium and titanium. The maximum heat flux for consumable electrode arc melting of 8-inch-diameter ingots was 0.5 X 106 Btu/ft2 hr. The effects of electrode material) electrode diameter) arc current) and arc potential on heat flux from the ingot to the crucible were studied. Data were also obtained on crucible wall temperatures and on the effect of very narrow annular water jackets.

Develop a reliable, portable device for non-destructively testing the support integrity of a friction rock support (commonly referred to as a Split Set ). Approach The friction rock support, used to support mine roof and ribs, is a slotted tube driven into a drilled hole of smaller diameter. Upon installation, the tube is compressed radially. The amount of compression is a function of the hole diameter, the strength of the host rock, and the properties of the split set itself. A simple lightweight self-contained device was developed to determine the pull-out resistance of the friction rock supports in-situ, based on measurements of the tube&apos;s deformation. The tester measures the com-pressed internal volume of the slotted tube, which has been found to provide an estimate of the support&apos;s resistance to pull out. How It Works The tester consists of a pump and expander sections. The expander sections are made from an elastomer membrane which is stretched over two cores, each one inch in diameter and twelve inches long. The expanders are connected by a flexible coupler so that they can fit any alignment of the support.

Develop a technology for producing high-quality hake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. Approach Treat the waste kish as an ore and apply mineral processing techniques of physical beneficiation and chemical purification to produce a range of graphite products com¬petitive with the natural mineral. Background Graphite is a naturally occurring form of carbon with a unique combination of properties that make it indispensable in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications. It has high electrical and thermal conductivity and remains stable to extremely high temperatures It has a low coefficient of friction and is nearly impervious to corrosion. The steel industry is dependent on graphite in clay-, magnesia-, and alumina-bonded refractories for crucibles, bricks, facings, and coatings. Electrical uses include graphite brushes in motors and generators, and electrodes in batteries. The transportation industry needs graphite for clutch and brake linings, and all industries depend on graphite in seals, gaskets, lubricants, and coatings. The consumer sees graphite in composite plastics and in the common pencil. As with all natural minerals, the availability of graphite is diminishing and costs are rising as quality decreases.

Several sets of questions and answers on the fundamentals of first aid to the injured, based on the Manual of First-Aid Instruction of the United States Bureau of Mines, are now in use in various parts of the United States. Persons experienced in first-aid instruction believe that a standardized set of questions and answers will assist materially in preparing men for examin- ations conducted by the Bureau for first-aid certificates. Inquiries as to whether a set of standardized questions and answers is available have been made frequently by those training men for the Bureau of Mines examination for certificates. It is believed that the following list of 171 questions and answers com- piled directly from the manual will be useful to company officials and em- ployees who are engaged in cooperative first-aid training to qualify for Bureau of Mines certificates. The list may also be used by field men of the Bureau in training instructors preparatory to a cooperative training campaign and in examining classes or individuals for first-aid certificates. Native asphalt was produced in 1978-79 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output in-creased 37% in 1978 to 1.7 million tons and decreased 5% in 1979 to 1.6 million tons while value increased 39% in 1978 to $19.3 million and 33% in 1979 to $25.6 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

The petroleum sector continued to dominate Ecuador&apos;s economic activity in 1978, accounting for nearly 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 42% of total export earnings. In 1978, a more flexible petroleum export price was adopted which permitted an expansion of foreign market opportunities. During 1979, Ecuador took advantage of disruptions in the world petroleum supply and renegotiated existing export contracts to accomodate the rapidly escalating world market price. Petroleum sales on the spot market were maximized, and prices reached unprecedented levels. By taking royalty payments in-kind, Ecuador increased its volume of petroleum available for term and spot sales. Although the volume remained about the same as in 1978, the total value of 1979 petroleum exports increased to about $920 million, reflecting a 76% increase over the $523 million received for 1978 crude oil exports. Concerned about its steadily decreasing petroleum reserves (recently estimated at about 1.1 billion barrels), rapidly increasing and heavily subsidized domestic consumption, and the prospect of having to import substantial amounts of petroleum by 1983, Ecuador announced plane which it anticipates will double reserves within the next 5 years. The Government plans to spend $1 billion over the 5-year period. Plans include drilling 325 exploration and development wells and establishment of a secondary recovery program for the Sachs and shushufindi fields. Some exploration wells are expected to reach a depth of 17,000 feet. It is thought that substantial reserves exist in the southeast Amazon region. Late in 1979, it was announced that some 10 million hectares will be available for exploration tenders-probably in blocks of about 200,000 hectares each-in the Amazon jungle of the Orients and in the coastal and offshore regions. The Government planned to commission a private, independent analysis of Ecuador&apos;s petroleum reserves that would also include recommendations on efficient production levels.

Preparation of high-purity magnesium-yttrium alloys by electroreduction of Y2O3 dissolved in a YF3-LiF bath and the subsequent deposition of yttrium in a molten magnesium cathode was investigated in laboratory-scale apparatus. Parameters such as temperature, current density, and electrolyte density were studied. Electrolysis was conducted in a specially designed MgO diaphragm cell at temperatures ranging from 780° to 970° C. Alloys containing up to 55 weight-percent yttrium were prepared at cathode current efficiencies of 21 to 60 percent. Cell design and operation are described, and some of the limiting conditions pertaining to the method are discussed.

Rapidly identify unstable mine waste embankments and similar dam structures. Approach Aerial photography, geotechnical instrumentation, and telephone or satellite data transmission are used to supplement walk-around inspect ions. How It Works Embankment stability and other indicators of structural integrity are evaluated using aerial photography, and on-site unattended instruments and data transmitting systems. Evidence of external movement and water seepage is obtained from aerial photography and photogrammetric evaluation techniques. Surface points marked by stake- mounted targets are monitored photographically at time intervals of several weeks or months. Photographic measurements of x, y, and z coordinates of these points are obtained from flying a series of photo-runs over the dam.

An apparatus for determining trace impurities in Grade-A helium by mass spectrometer methods was designed and built by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Grade-A is the designation for helium commercially produced by the Bureau. Its nominal purity is 99.995 percent. The device, following a suggestion by Deaton, concentrates the impurities in the helium by freezing them out in a coil-and-trap assembly cooled by liquid helium. A known volume of helium is passed through the trap, the concentration ratio determined, and samples of the concentrated impurities are analyzed by mass spectrometer methods. The apparatus has been in service for approximately 20 months and has satisfactorily met all requirements. Over 200 analyses were made of helium contained in conventional cylinders, obtained from the Amarillo, Exell, Otis, and Navajo Helium Plants, during the 6-month period ending March I, 1959. Total impurity concentrations, in parts per million, were as follows: Amarillo, 19.1; Exell, 17.1; Otis, 11.3; and Navajo, 6.6. Neon and nitrogen were the major impurities. Complete data are shown in table 4 in the body of this report.

Provide a more efficient method of cooling hot working environments in deep mines than is possible with single stage spray coolers or cooling coil heat exchangers. Approach Pass warm mine air through several stages of horizontally oriented water sprays fed by the chilled water supply of the mine. How It Works This concept extends the capabilities and potential applications of the coolers described in Technology News nos. 71 and 93. In this multi-stage design, hot ventilation air is cooled while passing through horizontal water sprays. Air enters the cooler through a diffuser section which slows the airflow and distributes it evenly across the cooler with a minimum of pressure drop. This ensures uniform exposure of the warm air to the cool water and consequent high thermal efficiencies. In the three-stage cooler shown, cold mine service water is sprayed from the first water stage manifold on the downwind end of the cooler. Slightly warmed water from this spray stage is collected in a sump, pumped and then resprayed through the second stage manifold. The process is repeated again for the third-stage. An overall counterflow heat exchange effect is thus achieved by exposing the hottest incoming air to the warmer, third-stage water spray first and to the coldest, first-stage water spray last. Wave plate eliminators can be employed between stages of water sprays to increase thermal efficiency or at the outlet to minimize the water discharged into the mine ventilation air. The Bureau of Mires in its investigations of gas masks for use in mines and allied industries has studied and developed various types of masks for protection against noxious uses and furies that may be present in atmospheres encountered in mines, metallurgical works, chemical and other industries. As a result of these investigations, the Bureau issued a schedule5 of tests under which manufacturer who voluntarily submit masks for examination and test, are issued an approval certificate for masks that meet the Bureau&apos;s specifications. In the Bureau&apos;s schedule, masks arc classified by types of gases removed, as type A masks for protection against acid gases; B; organic vapor; C, ammonia; D, carbon monoxide; E, smoke, dust, and mist; F, special gases; combination types, and type N, for protection in air against all gases, vapors, and smokes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the physical and chemical tests that were conducted on a type N mask, the protective principles and construction of the essential elements of the canister and attachments, and the uses and limitations of this type of mask. The mask tested is known as the all-service mask, manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa;, and was approved (approval No. 1403) by the Bureau on July 1, 1924, for protection from all classes of poisonous vapors, gases and smokes in air.

"INTRODUCTION The practicability of providing safer methods of underground transportation for mine workmen and officials has been given much thought in recent years by advocates of safety, health, and efficiency. Numerous fatalities and disabling injuries have resulted from falls of roof, personal contact with both electrical conductors and timbers, and improper position or conduct of passengers while they were in man-trips. Unfavorable atmospheric exposure due to high-velocity air currents and sudden changes in temperature may adversely affect the health of mine workmen if they are transported in unprotected Cars.Recent installations of protected, man-trip cars, wherein such cars have been utilized to haul men to and from their stations in the mine, have resulted in a large reduction in exposure to haulage hazards. Where special-built cars have been used the probability of injuries to men during transportation in man-trips has been decreased, and the morale of the employees has been improved. A number of man-trip cars are in service in the coal-mining regions; those described in this circular are typical examples of a few installations."
