Oil shale has been defined as, "a compact, laminated rock of sedimentary origin yielding over 35 percent of ash and containing organic matter that yields oil when distilled but not appreciably when extracted with the ordinary solvents for petroleum." The oil-yielding organic matter in oil shale, commonly called kerogen, decomposes upon application of heat to form bituminous materials that are soluble in organic solvents and may be extracted from the inorganic residue. However, separation usually is accomplished by continuing the heating and thereby cracking the primary bitumens to gas and oil, which distill, leaving a carbonaceous material on the mineral residue. It has been suggested that this conversion takes place only at relatively high temperatures - 750°F or higher. On the other hand, other workers have found that transformation may take place to some extent at temperatures as low as 400°F. In either a solvent extraction or a destructive distillation process for separating organic material from the inorganic portion of oil shale, the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of the oil shale sufficiently to induce a satisfactory rate of conversion of kerogen to oil is important in determining the design of an economical process. Likewise, the quantity of heat recoverable from a spent shale is important in determining the overall heat balance of the process. Published data on the specific heat of American oil shales are meager. Gavin and Sharp present data for two samples of Colorado oil shale, one from near DeBeque and one from Parachute Creek, and for a sample of spent shale over a temperature range of 68°F to 1940°F. McKee and Lydor present data on the specific heat of two samples of oil shale from near DeBeque, Colorado. Additional thermal data on various grades of oil shale over a wider range of temperature are needed in order to apply sound engineering practices to the design of equipment for processing oil shale.

The Bureau of Mines investigated two techniques for removing CaO from scheelite (CaW04) prior to electrolysis. In the first technique, a crude tungstic oxide (WO3) containing 0.15-percent lime (CaO) was prepared by digesting scheelite concentrates in hot hydrochloric acid. This oxide was used as cell feed to produce tungsten of 99.9-percent purity. The second technique used a high-temperature, two-phase separation, resulting in extraction of 99 percent of the WO3 in the halide-tungstate phase, while 90 percent of the CaO was retained in the silicate phase. Tungsten of 99.9-percent purity was deposited from the halide-tungstate melt after B203 and NaPO3 were added to form an electrolyte. The two methods were compared with a previously developed technique of depositing tungsten from scheelite concentrate fed directly to the electrolytic cell.

Thermal decomposition of copper (II) sulfate (CUS04) and copper (II) oxy-sulfate (CuO?CUS04) are important steps in the overall oxidative roasting of covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S). Nonisothermal thermogravimetric techniques were used to investigate the decomposition reactions in flowing Na and air. Thermal decomposition of CUS04 and CuO?CUS04 followed "linear" kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 55±2 and 66±3 kcal per mole decomposed, respectively. These apparent activation energies comply with those previously reported when isothermal kinetic techniques were used. The addition of oxygen decreased the rate of decomposition, while small amounts of iron which were admixed with CuO?CUS04 did not have a significant effect. Neither oxygen nor iron had any appreciable effect on the apparent activation energy of the decomposition reaction.

As part of the work done at the Washington coal mines during the year 1929 , a study was made of the safety practices in and about the mines . Inasmuch as electrical blasting has made considerable headway it is interesting to note the manner in which it is done and the reasons why it was discarded at some of the mines . Blasting is done at the mines in the State by means of capped fuse , electric blasting " caps , " and in some instances by electric delay detonators . Black blasting powder with fuse is used at most of the open- light mines . The use of squibs was discontinued several years ago because the coal operators , without exception , recognized the dangers incidental to their use . Permissible explosive and dynamite are also used at some of the open- light mines . With the exception of some rock work and the driving of level work in gangways and air courses the explosive is detonated by means of capped fuse .

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using statistical response surface regression analysis to predict the sulfur and ash distributions and the washability characteristics of coal along a seam in advance of mining. Prediction equations were developed with experimental data from channel, bench, and core samples from the Pittsburgh coal seam in Greene County, Pa. It was not possible, with the available experimental data, to construct mathematical models to predict ash and sulfur concentrations between sample points. In the authors' opinion, however, the good agreement between experimentally determined and predicted values at given sample points demonstrates the usefulness of the method. More input data, such as geologic information, seam characteristics (rock-to-coal ratio), petrographic analysis, and chemical data, would perhaps make it possible to predict sulfur and ash concentrations and washability characteristics between sample points.

"Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) are major products of the activated alveolar macrophage and serve as key mediators of lung injury. In order to determine if the synthesis ofTXA2 and the release ofTNFa are associated, the production of these inflammatory agents by the human alveolar macrophage (AM), as a result of activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was assessed in the absence and presence of the thromboxane synthase inhibitors UK 38,485 (Dazmegrel) and OKY 046. UK 38,485 and OKY 046 inhibited both LPS-stimulated TXA2 production and TNFa release in a dose-dependent manner. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was not increased by UK 38,485 or OKY 046. Neither LPS nor UK 38,485 had any effect on LT84 production by AM. Neither UK 38,485 or OKY 046 had any effect on LPS-stimulated interleukin-I beta release. However, the TXA2 mimetic, U46619, did not stimulate TNFa release by AM either in the absence or presence of UK 38,485. These findings suggest that 1) UK 38,485 and OKY 046 are inhibitors of both TXA2 production and TNFa release by activated human AM, 2) UK 38,485 probably does not exert its inhibitory action on TNFa release through effects on eicosanoid production and 3) the possibility that TNFa- and TXA2-induced lung injury may be subject to amelioration by imidazole-based compounds should be further evaluated.IntroductionTumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), produced by monocytes and macrophages, is a potent peptide mediator of lung injury (1,2). The exaggerated release of TNFa has been implicated in the etiology of acute lung reactions such as septic shock of bacterial or viral origin (3,4). The role of TNFa is expressed primarily through its ability to activate a variety of cell types within the lung environment including polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs, ref. 5), type II epithelial cells (6) and fibroblasts (7). The role of lipid mediators in lung disease has also been extensively characterized (1). In particular, the relationship between pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis and the production of oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (here termed ""eicosanoids"") appears to be a key factor in a variety of disease processes in the lung (8). The alveolar macrophage (AM) synthesizes primarily prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (LT84, ref. 9). These eicosanoids have been shown to produce a variety of effects in the lung including bronchial smooth muscle dilatation (PGE2, ref. 10), vascular smooth muscle contraction and platelet aggregation (TXA2, ref. 11) and oedema and immune cell extravasation (LT84, ref. 12)."

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. The Bureau of Mines conducted re-search to determine the resistance of basic refractories to corrosion by ash slags that would result from the burning of coal and lignite in metallurgical operations. Basic refractories are of economic interest because they are from one-third to one-half as expensive as 90-to 99-pct-alumina refractories. Static tests were performed at 1,300° C and dynamic tests at 1,400° to 1,650° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in a slag environment. In alkali-containing lignite ash slags, in order of decreasing resistance, magnesite, magnesite-chrome, and chrome-magnesite refractories all had corrosion resistances equal to or better than 90-to 99-pct-alumina refractories. These basic refractories formed slag penetration layers in dynamic tests, which helped protect them from further attack. Chemically bonded basic refractories in general did not have as good a resistance to slag attack as did burned refractories of the same composition. In very acidic coal ash slag, a chrome-magnesite refractory containing 30 pct MgO plus a slag inhibitor and direct-bonded magnesite-chrome refractories with 60 pct MgO had good resistance to attack. Chrome-magnesite refractories (30 to 40 pct MgO) were moderately to severely attacked, and refractories with greater than 70 pct MgO were severely attacked by this same slag.

To provide technology for achieving more efficient water filtration systems for the mineral industry, the Bureau of Mines performed demon-stration filtration tests at three iron ore mines and one steel mill. A comparison of equivalently sized magnesium oxide (MgO) and sand filters showed that MgO had a higher capacity and could operate at higher fil-tration rates than sand. In demonstration tests when alum (AlK(S04)2) was the coagulant, suspended solids breakthrough occurred even though the pressure across the filter (head loss) was 7 psig or less. Under these circumstances, the MgO demonstrated 20 to 100 pct greater filtra-tion capacity, defined in terms of the volume of water filtered before breakthrough. When an organic floccu1ant was used at one location, head loss was the run-limiting factor; the filters essentially plugged with-out any solids breakthrough.

Reduce longwall equipment transfer time between panels by utilizing a predriven recovery room, and thus eliminate the premove preparation associated with most equipment recovery methods. Background and Approach The recovery point for a retreating longwall is a predetermined position near the end of the panel where mining is terminated and equipment is disassembled and removed. However, to prepare for equipment removal at the recovery point, bolting and wire meshing arc required before the recovery point is reached. Usually, preparations for equipment recovery begin about 35 ft from the recovery point, significantly impeding the normal rate of advance of the longwall and, consequently, production. Recently, BethEnergy Mines, Inc., and the Bureau of Mines cooperated to evaluate the applicability of utilizing predriven recovery rooms to improve longwall equipment recovery. A predriven recovery room is an entry driven parallel to the longwall face at the end of the panel, having standard dimensions (for that particular mine) and supported with bolts, wire mesh, and supplemental support. The preparation of this entry is completed before it experiences mining-induced effects from the approaching longwall face. This enables the face to continue to mine at its normal rate of advance until the panel is completed. The supplemental support is required to control the loads imposed by the front abutment and is the most vital component of the recovery room.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines whose entries are at least 93m2 (1,000 ft2). The ventilation of large-opening mines is unique compared to other types of mines because (1) it is challenging to keep airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants because the entries are so large, (2) large air volumes can be moved through the mines with little static pressure drop, and (3) stoppings that are used to direct ventilation airflows are costly to construct and to maintain. The research results suggest that the ventilation of large-opening mines is improved significantly by incorporating ventilation planning into the mine planning process, using propeller fans to direct airflow, developing new stopping materials and construction methods, and using long pillars to eliminate crosscuts where possible.

During the mineral survey of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and study areas by the author in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1976 (Marks, 1978), the area designated Reservoir-North (RARE II No. H1-485) in January, 1979, (U.S. Forest Service, 1979) was examined, along with other lands adjacent to the earlier study areas. However, the 1978 open-file report covered only areas originally designated for study. The present report on Reservoir-North is based on earlier work. No work has been done in the area since 1976. Mineral Appraisal Reservoir-North RARE II area (No. H1-485) is in the Northern Disturbed Belt which has been identified as having high potential for natural gas accumulations and lesser potential for oil accumulations (Mudge, 1978). Oil and gas lease applications in the area, indicate interest by oil companies.

Each year at least one and in some years several explosions are reported as having resulted from firing of mudcapped shots in coal mines; undoubtedly a number of small or local explosions occur that are not reported; in addition there are numerous accidents, some of them fatal, attributable to this reprehensible blasting practice. It is surprising that so few explosions and other accidents from this cause occur since the practice of firing mudcapped, Even in gassy "adobe," "dobe," "sand blast," or "bulldozed" shots is widespread. mines where general blasting is safeguarded by being done with permissible explo- sives, rocks or bowlders frequently are blasted with mudcapped shots of dynamite; even if permissible explosives are used, this type of shooting is dangerous. The usual method of preparing a mudcapped shot is to place the explosive, either in loose or cartridge form, with the detonator or "cap" on top of a piece of rock or coal and cover it with several handfuls of moist clay, loam, sand, or When the shot is road dust; in many cases there is no covering of any kind. fired a dense cloud of dust, together with an intensively hot fleme, are thrown into suspension, and if the dust is explosive or ignitable an explosion or igni- tion is likely to result practically simultaneously. The presence of gas greatly increases the explosibility of the dust, as well as the probability of an ignition. Every shot, of any known explosive, fired in a coal mine without having the charge properly confined in a drill hole and tamped with incombustible stemming to the collar of the hole, is capable of initiating an explosion that may cause the death of every man in the mine. [As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Due mainly to conditions brought about by the war , the metal mining industry in this country is now passing through one of the most critical stages in its history , and is confronted by new problems upon the solution and adjustment of which depends , in a large measure , its future welfare and prosperity . The chief factors contributing to the cost of production are the cost of labor and supplies . It is conceded by our leading mine operators , managers , and engineers that any material reduction in the cost of labor or supplies , within possibly the next two or three years , cannot be anticipated , anl it is not thought likely that pre - war prices will ever again prevail . This being true , the mine operator must look in some cther direction to effect economies that will lower production costs . If this cannot be accomplished it will mean , in many instances , that mines and metallurgical works will have to be closed and abandoned , which will tend to disorganize the entire industry . How to lower production costs and still maintain the present high standard of wage , is the problem that is engaging the serious attention of mine operators and managers over the entire country . In As a solution to this problem it is thought that the most promising field of investigation lies in the direction of systematizing and standardizing mining practice , so as to effect economies in the use of both labor and materials . other words , to eliminate , in so far as possible , unproductive effort and waste and thereby secure a maximum of productive results , It is not the idea to speed up work or to demand a greater effort on the part of the workman , but rather so to systematize and standardize the various under ground operations that his energy will be directed into more useful and productive channels ,

The only economically important mineral currently produced in Bangladesh was natural gas. Bangladesh was not a world? ranked producer of any mineral commodity, but the possibility of producing and exporting commercial amounts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) was being examined. Proved reserves of natural gas were sufficient to supply most of the country's industrial and domestic heating and electric needs and still support an export-oriented LNG plant. Other mineral production was of virtually no significance to the economy, although there were a few prospects for nonmetallic mineral development. Bangladesh continued to make economic progress during 1978 and into early 1979. Gross domestic product (GDP) at current prices rose from $6.6 billion in 1976-772 to $8.2 billion in 1977?78 and $9.3 billion in 1978.79.2 In fiscal 1979, the economic conditions were favorable until a severe drought hit most of the country. It W88 reported that conditions were the worst in 40 years, and 88 of July 1979, substantial crop losses were predicted. The agricultural sector accounts for over 53% of the GDP and about 75% of all employment. The poor weather will cause economic problems in the form of slower growth, larger trade deficits, and a higher rate of inflation. The 1978.79 statistics showed that real GDP increased just 4%.

"INTRODUCTION This circular contains the story of a stubborn mine fire of electrical origin that started on the main haulage road of No. 59 mine of the Peabody Coal Co. and illustrates that sometimes serious fires can be fought by direct attack. The story also points out that the cost of such procedure can be extremely high, and it is better, therefore, to minimize the possibility of a fire of electrical origin by suitable over-current and line-fault protection. The lives of 163 men were saved by utilizing a recently sunk air shaft near active workings as an escapeway. These men could not have reached the older openings. Also described are the rescue of 75 additional men through another air shaft, sealing of the fire, attempted extin¬guishment with carbon dioxide, and the difficulties of fighting the fire and recovering the mine.A fire occurred shortly before 12 o'clock noon, August 15, 1949, in the No. 59 mine, Peabody Coal Co., Springfield, Ill. All 257 men underground escaped to the surface. One group of 75 men was delayed from escaping for several hours after the alarm was given because smoke and fire gases were circulating in a main return airway, which intervened between their working section and one air shaft, and also in the stairway compartment of the shaft. After being supplied with universal-type gas masks, or self-rescuers, these men were conducted from the mine by members of a State mine-rescue team and other mine employees. Six nine officials were hospitalized because of exposure to carbon monoxide during fire-fighting activities; all were discharged a few days afterward. Later, while doing work incident to fighting the fire, two men were killed, and several were injured by falls of roof and rib.The fire broke out after a collision of a loaded trip with four empty mine cars on the main east haulage entry. The mine cars were jammed against the trolley wire causing a sustained electric arc that ignited the wooden mine cars and the fire spread to the timbers and coal."

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a Venezuelan topped crude oil and a Venezuelan reduced crude oil were determined at temperatures from 740° to 850° F, pressures from 800 to 1,600 psig, and space velocities from 1.0 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr. Kinetic calculations showed that under these conditions the desulfurization reaction was first order with respect to sulfur and had an average activation energy of 32.5 kcal/mo1. Catalyst life tests made at 750° F, with pressures of 800, 1,200, and 1,600 psig and space velocities of 1.0 and 1.25 Vo/Ve/hr, showed that the decrease in the relative activity of the catalyst was a logarithmic function of time or volume of oil processed and the amount of vanadium deposited on the catalyst. Comparative tests made with residual fuels prepared from a Wilmington, Calif., crude oil and a Wyoming asphaltic crude oil showed that catalyst life may be extended by processing fuel oil with a low metal content, but it may be shortened by the presence of large amounts of asphalt in the feed.

"The American Consul at Guatemala City reports that the Guatemala Marble Mining Company is preparing to operate a marble quarry about 13 miles from the railroad station of Zacapa, which station is a little over 100 miles from Puerto Barrios, the nearest port from which the product may be shipped. The deposit is extensive, and though somewhat broken up in places, great quantities of sound marble are available. It is claimed that the marble is equal in quality to the best product of the Italian Carrara quarries.Access to the quarry by rail is obtained by a spur track of the International Railways of Central America (Ferrocarril Internacional de Centro America) from Marmol, 3 miles south of Zacapa. This spur is about 5 miles long and terminates at the foot of the mountains. A double-track incline cable-way 2000 feet in length has been constructed to bring the marble down the mountain. From the top of the incline to the quarry there is a railway six miles in length over which the rock will be hauled by two side-geared Shay locomotives."

Some of the geochemical relationships that exist between subsurface fluids and the associated geologic strata in petroleum producing areas of Louisiana have been determined. Samples of petroleum-associated water were obtained from 126 wells in Louisiana that produced from sediments of three geologic ages: Tertiary, Cretaceous, and Jurassic. The samples were trans-ported to a central laboratory for analysis of chemical composition, using standard methods, to determine if the compositions varied with the geologic strata of their source and, if so, why. The dissolved constituents were com-pared with those of a brine that was concentrated by evaporation. The concentrations of bromide, calcium, and strontium were useful in distinguishing the brines produced from sediments of a late age from those of an earlier age. The concentration ratios of Mg' (total equivalent magnesium) and bromide indicated that dolomitization probably had occurred and altered the composition of the brines. A principal-components analysis of the data indicated an inverse relationship between depth and concentrations of bromide, strontium, calcium, and lithium.
