Extensive studies have been made of the various effluents found in the Synthane coal-to-gas process. Analyses have been made of the waters, gases, and trace elements present in some of the streams. Results of analyses show the water effluents are the area where extensive research is needed.

Studies were made to determine the effect of the shape of a pneumaticrock- drill exhaust muffler on its efficiency, and the origin and reduction of exit noise from the mufflers. Tests of mufflers of three different shapes proved that the shape is not critical and that a muffler could be incorporated into the shell of the drill. Petal diffusers are beneficial in reducing exit noise but add another projection to the machine. Increasing the number of exit openings while maintaining the same area of exit opening has a markedly beneficial effect on the exit noise and appears to be the most satisfactory treatment.

The Bureau of Mines conducted one of the most extensive studies on surface mine illumination to date, to assess the illumination needs of mobile surface mining machinery with respect to the visual tasks required of machinery operators. Field Investigations were performed at 22 surface mining operations, coal and metal-nonmetal, within several mining regions of the United States. Visibility and illumination were measured for 159 visual tasks performed by equipment operators on or near 57 surface mining machines, including draglines, shovels, blasthole drills, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, graders, scrapers, and several service-type vehicles.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. [Experiments were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on five types of simuated lunar rock (dacite, tholeiitic basalt, vesicular basalt, pumice, and uluth Gabbro) to study the effects of various simulated lunar environments n their strength and deformational properties. Specimens were tested in an ltrahigh vacuum (UHV) system at pressures ranging from atmospheric down to 0-11 torr and at temperatures of -130°, 20°, and 135° C. All tests were onducted with a servocontrolled testing machine. Rock specimens tested at 0° C in UHV exhibited significantly higher compressive strength and Young's odulus than those tested at 20° C in atmospheric pressure. The magnitudes f increase are related to the porosities and permeabilities of the rock pecimens; high porosity and permeability allow better outgassing and thus nprove surface cleanliness in UHV. The compressive strength generally ncreases but Young's modulus decreases as test environments change from 20° C i UHV to 135° C in UHV. No significant difference was observed in the iysical properties measured at 20° C in LTV and -130° C in UHV. Anisotropy i strength and Young's modulus exist both in UHV and at atmospheric condi¬'.ons with the same symmetry pattern. The orientations of the principal axes iy, however, change from the atmospheric to UHV condition. The results idicate that rock fragmentation in lunar environment will require more ergy than that at 20° C in atomospheric pressure.]

In response to a request from the President, the Department of the Interior joined with other agencies in a comprehensive study of the land and water resources of the New England-New York region. As part of this study, chemical engineers of the Bureau of Mines have visited 1,025 mineral-industries plants to inventory the waterborne wastes of mineral origin, discharged by the mineral industries of the New England-New York region. Four-hundred and sixty-two of these plants disposed their wastes to a public sewer of some type, but waste control remains a problem for moat of them. The 1,025 plants are discussed in main industry groups according to their production: Chemical and allied products. Stone, clay, and glass products. Iron and steel and their products (except machinery). Nonferrous metals and their products. Electrical machinery. Machinery (except electrical). Transportation equipment. Miscellaneous mineral industries.

A simple economical method has been developed for determining the in situ longitudinal and shear velocities in rock from which its elastic constants can be calculated. By detonating small charges of high explosives in shallow drill holes near a free surface, both longitudinal and shear waves were generated simultaneously. Accelerometers and velocity gages mounted to the rock surface were used to record the arrival time for both waves over travel path lengths from 50 to 450 feet, Measurements were made in two rock types. From the arrival time measurements, the longitudinal and shear wave velocities were calculated. From these velocities and the density of the rock, the elastic constants were calculated. The dynamic elastic constants of drill core samples of the two rock types were determined in the laboratory by the resonant-frequency method, The lab- oratory and in situ elastic constants are compared and significant differences noted. In general, there is less spread in the in situ data than in the laboratory data, and Poisson's ratio does not fall outside the theoretical limits for the in situ data as is often the case for laboratory-determined elastic constants.

The Brown Derby pegmatites are in Gunnison County, Colo., about 18 miles east of Gunnison. Approximately 860 tons of lepidolite concentrates, with smaller amounts of microlite and beryl, was produced from 3 dikes of the Brown Derby group from 1943 through 1947. No mining was done from 1948 until December 1950, when production of lepidolite and beryl was resumed by the Poston Mining & Milling Co. Mining was intermittent during 1951 and 1952. The dikes were mapped and studied by the Federal Geological Survey during the field seasons of 1942 to 1944, and in May 1950 the Bureau of Mines initiated a diamond-drilling project to test the three dikes for lepidolite and beryl. After being recessed twice, the project was terminated indefinitely July 1951. Seven drill holes were completed for a total of 1,841.6 feet of drilling.

The recent introduction of small coal jigs in Alabama to meet the needs of truck - mine operators for cheap and economical cleaning equipment marks another step in Alabama's pioneering record in the mechanical cleaning and preparation of coal . During the past 4 or 5 years a number of these small jigs , with capacity of 5 to 10 tons per hour , have been installed at Alabama truck mines and at a few truck mines in Illinois , Tennessee , and Pennsylvania . Most of the installations have been at mines that specialize in the production of domestic , stoker coal . This report describes three models of small jigs and includes performance data obtained recently on one of the models by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior , in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa , Ala . , for the purpose of comparing it with fullsize jigs on a performance basis . With literally hundreds of truck mines now in operation throughout the country , it has been assumed in preparing this report that there is widespread interest in the availability of small - scale inexpensive preparation equipment for use at such mines in the production of steam and domestic coal and in some instances coal for manufacture of coke . Practically none of the coal from Alabama truck mines is scld to coke - oven plants ; but in some sections of the country truck mines supply a considerable amount of coking coal, and the use of small, inexpensive washers at some of them might be very advantageous during the present war emergency from the standpoint of increasing pig - iron production through improvements in coke quality .

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system using a high-speed electropneumatic mechanism for the rapid (grab) sampling of dusts and gases during an explosion. The sampling system consists of an aluminum housing that incorporates two 30-cm3 preevacuated glass vials with rubber septums. Upon actuation, the sampling probe needle is driven through the septum with a pressurized air pulse, filling the tube with gas and dust from the mine explosion. After a predetermined time, the sampling probe needle is retracted by a second high-pressure air pulse to its normal (quiescent) state, allowing the sampling tube to reseal. The onset and the duration of sampling are independently variable and controlled by a time-delay relay package. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis-charring in coal particles and the generation and combustion of the pyrolysis vapors in both large- and small- scale explosions. The following results were obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory: (1) Gas sampling of the leading edge of the flame front shows the large concentration changes, characteristic of the flame front; (2) gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen; and (3) the particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring.

In connection with, a stream-pollution-research project, a colorimetric method was developed for concentrations of 1 to 30 p.p.m, of pine oil in water. The method depends on the stable bluish-green color produced when pine oil is reacted with vanillin-hydrochloric acid reagent at 60° C. for 25 minutes. The colorimetric reaction actually determines alphaterpineol, the principal component in pine oil. Some waters may require a special preparation in which ion-exchange resins are used to remove interference. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author wishes to express his appreciation to A. A. Because of their noncombustibility, silicate and magnesium oxycements are desirable for sealing shale in underground coal mines. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, cement samples were cured and tested (nonstandard tests) for submersion to note resistance to dissolution (breaking into parts), which is an important property for a coating. Nonappreciable dissolution during 1 week of submersion was set for passing the test. Over half of the coatings passed the test.

This Bureau of Mines report contains information on 63 water flood projects in Colorado. Water was injected in 10 formations located in 58 oilfields. Specific field data presented include location, discovery, development, water supply, fluid injection, oil and water production, oil reserves, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. An estimated 3.5 billion barrels of water has been injected to recover approximately 533 million barrels of oil, a ratio of 6.57 to 1. Most of the injection water is from alluvial deposits, although produced water is used in many fields. Injection water treatment is not a major problem. Appraisal of project success or failure in this report is based on technical, rather than economic, information.

Roof bolt system design means the selection of the type, length, capacity, and pattern of bolts for a particular application. Despite research efforts dating back 50 years, no design methodology has found wide acceptance. This paper begins by identifying four mechanisms that roof bolts use to reinforce the ground. It argues that the reinforcement mechanism is determined by the roof geology and stress level, not by the type of bolt. Next, the attributes of roof bolts are discussed in the light of recent research, including anchorage mechanism, installed tension, length, capacity, timing of installation, and installation quality. Several significant areas of controversy are identified. Design methods from around the world are discussed, including those based on empirical research, numerical modeling, and roof monitoring. Finally, some simple guidelines for preliminary design of roof bolt systems are proposed based on statistical analysis of roof support performance at 37 U.S. mines.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available.

A method to recover copper and elemental sulfur from chalcopyrite concen¬trate, using a ferric chloride leach, CuFeS2 + 3FeCl3 ? CuCl + 4FeCl2 + 2S, was reported by the Federal Bureau of Mines in 1971 (Report of Investigations 7474). Since that time, additional work has been done to improve certain steps in the procedure; that is, the recovery of sulfur from the leach residue, the recovery of copper and iron from the leach solution, and the regeneration of the leach solution. It was determined that over 99 pct of the elemental sulfur in the leach residue could be extracted at ambient temperature with an ammonium sulfide solution. Heating the pregnant solution precipitated crystals of rhombic sulfur (99.5 pct purity) and liberated ammonia and hydrogen sulfide for recycle. Copper with a purity in excess of 99 pct was obtained from the leach solution by electrolysis, using a diaphragm cell, with an energy requirement of less than 0.7 kW-hr/lb. Metal was deposited as a weakly adherent powder that could be easily dislodged from the cathode and withdrawn continuously from the cell in the form of a slurry. During electrolysis, part of the Fe(II) was oxidized to Fe (III) at the anode so there was no chlorine evolution. The leach solution was regenerated by direct oxidation of the spent electrolyte with air or oxygen in a turboaerator at 80° C. This precipitated the iron dissolved during leaching in an easily filterable form, Fe203.xH20, and converted the remaining Fe(II) to Fe(III).

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

The Bureau of Mines has devised techniques to recover lithium from geothermal brines as the chloride. More than 99 pct of the lithium was precipitated from a brine containing 170 mg/L Li by adding a solution of AICl3 and increasing the pH to 7.5 with lime slurry. The Li-Al precipitate was dissolved in HCl and sparged with gaseous HCI to recover the AlCl3; this resulted in a solution containing LiCl and CaCI2. The solution was evaporated at 1000 C to obtain a mixture of the chlorides from which 97 pct of the lithium was recovered and 90 pct of the calcium was rejected by leaching with tetrahydrofuran. The LiCl recovered by evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran was purified by dissolution in water and treatment with oxalic acid. The final LiCl solution contained 89 pct of the lithium originally present in the brine and had a purity of 99.9 pet.
