Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. The explosives used in coal mines not only occasion accidents such as occur in the use of explosives elsewhere, but they frequently cause widespread disasters by igniting explosive mixtures of mine gas and air and of coal dust and air, or both. In addition, the firing of ex- plosives so shakes the walls and roofs of the mines as to cause falls, with their attendant casualities. Considering the large number of explosives and their wide range in composition and properties, it is obvious that certain of them should prove more suitable for use in coal mines than others. The problem is to determine which explosives are the most suitable for this purpose and the precise conditions under which they may be used with the greatest safety. Of course this problem could be worked out in actual mining, but experimental investigations when accompanying commercial opera- tions are hazardous and slow. To obtain the information sought, in the speediest and most economical manner, laboratory methods must be resorted to. The adoption of such methods began about 30 years ago with experiments in an iron gallery mounted on wheels, at Zwickau, Germany. This laboratory method of attacking the prob- lem has so commended itself that it has not only been repeated else- where in Germany but has at intervals been officially adopted, with many modifications and additions, by the Governments of Belgium, Austria, France, and Great Britain. Such was the status of coal-mine investigations in Europe when in 1904, an organization in the Geological Survey, which in 1907 be- came the technologic branch, was created to investigate the mineral- fuel resources of this country. At that time no division of the Na- tional Government had official cognizance of conditions existing in our mines, but through its system of collecting fuels for tests the technologic branch was forced to recognize that coal-mine accidents are a factor that must be reckoned with in determining the extent and availability of our mineral-fuel resources. This became so apparent, and it was so obviously a function of this branch to make a systematic research as to the cause and prevention of such acci- dents, that in July, 1907, experts were appointed especially to deal with this problem. As a result, not only was Bulletin 333, on Coal- Mine Accidents: Their Causes and Prevention, prepared and pub- lished, but through personal inspection of foreign testing stations, and a study of their reports and the critiques of their methods and operations, definite plans for the establishment of such a testing station in this country were formulated. In the latter part of 1907, four grave disasters occurred in close succession consequent on explosions in the Monongah mines in West Virginia, where 368 men were killed, the Darr mine in Pennsyl- vania, where 160 were killed, the Naomi mine in Pennsylvania, where 34 were killed, and the Yolande mine in Alabama, where 61 were killed. These frightful disasters so quickened the public con- science, and so plainly demonstrated that both humanitarian and economic needs demanded that steps be taken to prevent the re- currence of such accidents, that in 1908 Congress made a special appropriation for an investigation as to the "causes of mine ex- plosions." A similar appropriation was made in the following year. By act of May 16, 1910, the Bureau of Mines was created "to make diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to the safety of miners, the use of explosives, the prevention of accidents," and other matters relating to mining. Therefore, these investigations are at present conducted in obedience to an organic act instead of being dependent solely upon special appropriations. The first appropriation became available July 1, 1908. Through the courtesy of the War Department a portion of the grounds and buildings of the arsenal at Pittsburgh was granted for the use of the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. Work was immediately begun in procuring and erecting the necessary instru- ments and appliances for carrying out the desired tests and inves- tigations and in adapting the existing buildings or in erecting new structures to contain the apparatus. The Pittsburgh testing station was officially opened and regular work was commenced on December 3, 1908, the apparatus and appliances having been tested, the force drilled in their use, and the equipment and methods inspected and passed upon by foreign experts.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers, has made a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data regarding the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists principally of screen-sizing and float-and-sink data on the Clark and Gholson beds at Boothton, Ala. A previous washability study 4/ has been made on the Clark bed at Marvel, Ala.SAMPLING AT MINESThe coal from the Gholson and the Clark beds was sampled at the tipple which receives the output,the Boothten No. 3 and No. 4 mines. These two mines are on the Gholson and Clark beds, respectively, but the coal. from both mines is mixed on the tipple and washed in the same washery. The samples taken were minus 4-inch raw coal. The plus 4-inch raw coal is hand¬picked and not washed. AS the 4-inch screen had a capacity in excess of the output of the mines, it was stopped at the end of each mine-car trip. By Observing from which mine incline each trip was hoisted, a separate sample from each bed was cut from the discharge stream of an endless belt which conveys the through 4-inch raw coal to the bin ahead of the washer. The output from each bed was sampled uniformly over the period of a working shift. The two washability samples weighed approximately 3,000 pounds each."

This paper describes the mining methods and operating costs for 1938 at the South Burns shaft, situated in the Cripple Creek district, Colorado. The shaft is operated by Golden Conqueror Mines, Inc., through which portions of the properties of the Acacia Cold Mining Co., The Free Coinage Gold Mining Co., and The United Gold Mines Co. are worked under lease. During 1938, 30,773.61 dry tons of ore averaging $9.59 in gold per ton was mined. Of this, 10,138.439 tons averaging $10.65 per ton was produced on company account, and 20,635.171 tons averaging $9.05 per ton was produced by "split-check" lessees.

In the fall of 1953 the Philippine Bureau of Mines, under a Foreign Operations Administration Technical Assistance (FOA-TA) program, began a systematic investigation of the nickel content of the well-known Surigao laterite areas, on the island of Nonoc northeast of Mindanao, to determine the occurrence, distribution, and grade of nickel contained in the laterite and in the subjacent serpentine. At the same time, a technical review of the possibility of producing commercial ferronickel from the nickeliferous materials in the Philippine Islands was made, and a smelting process was suggested. The proposed process would be similar to that developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the reduction of the nickeliferous serpentine occurring in the Nickel Mountain ?deposit at Riddle, Oreg. The potential avail-ability of electric power from the Maria Cristina facilities at 3 mils per kw.-hr. would enhance the economic possibility of this program. Development of an economically feasible process for recovering nickel from the nickeliferous serpentines and laterites should lead to the establishment of a new industry in the Philippines, to the development of a source of nickel in the Far East, of which at present there is none, and to partial solution of the problem of supplying the free world with nickel. Enough preliminary reconnaissance had been completed by early 1954 to permit sampling of the deposit for metallurgical investigations. The FOA then requested the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., to conduct preliminary electric smelting studies on nickeliferous serpentine and laterite samples.

The present trend of chemicometallurgical research toward widespread and inclusive use of thermodynamic methods requires the inclusion of available data of this sort in any comprehensive metallurgical report . Such data for manganese are far from adequate for the full utilization of these methods . Even if our knowledge of these properties is weak , the collection of available figures is nevertheless well worth while , especially if their utilization in an approximate way may show inherent possibilities of application . No less important is the necessity for discovering the vital gaps in the existing information , to serve as a basis for further pertinent study . The utility of the thermodynamic methods of Lewis and Randall ( 234 ) 3 has become increasingly evident to metallurgists . It is true that at present no better approach to the general , fundamental problems of chemical metallurgy is available than close adherence to these methods . The effort is here made to collect and correlate , as far as possible , significant quantitative thermodynamic data on manganese and its metallurgically important compounds . There are considered here only the intrinsic properties of pure materials . The order maintained as far as possible will be as follows :

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to quantify microphone response variations that could result when the microphone is worn by a worker, as with a personal noise dosimeter, and to suggest an optimum placement and orientation of the microphone for noise exposure measurements. Previous studies have shown no significant variations in a diffuse field. This investigation, therefore, was conducted in the free-field conditions of an anechoic chamber using an anthropometric dummy as a subject, and broad band noise as the acoustic stimulus. This investigation established that, in a free field, the wearer's body does significantly affect microphone response; the response variations are a function of azimuth, and location and orientation of the microphone. Results suggest that locating the microphone on top of the subject's shoulder, oriented parallel to the body axis, should yield data comparable to that obtained using a sound-level meter.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

The mass spectra of 23 alkylthiophenes are presented , including 21 that have not been previously reported . Correlations between mass spectra and the structure of the thiophene homologs are discussed . Comparisons with , and corroboration of , earlier workers ' correlations and predictions are made . Several additional correlations are reported to enable the spectroscopist to identify the substituents on alkyl - substituted thiophenes , and the relationship of the mono - substituted and 2,5 - disubstituted alkylthiophenes is discussed in detail .

Large-scale ultrafine grinding tests of a coarse kaolin were made using the Bureau of Mines developed attrition grinding process in continuous open-and closed-circuit systems. A 20-inch diameter attrition grinder, designed and constructed at the Tuscaloosa Laboratory, was used. Studies included single- and multiple-stage open-circuit grinding, and also continuous grinding tests in closed-circuit with a 6-inch-diameter solid bowl centrifuge. Clay feed, containing 9.0 percent minus-2-micrometer esd, was used at fates up to 840 pounds per hour. Multistage grinding tests gave better results than single-stage treatment when equivalent clay feed rates were used. Closed-circuit grinding tests yielded ground products containing slightly more minus-2-micrometer-esd clay than the open-circuit grinding when using the same clay feed. Energy consumption was lower in closed-circuit grinding than in batch or open-circuit grinding. A modified two-stage closed-circuit grinding system gave the best grade of product and amount of minus -2-micrometer-esd clay produced per pound of clay feed. The ground product from this test contained 88.5 percent minus-2-micrometer-esd material and electrical energy consumption was 327 kilowatt-hours per ton of minus-2-micrometer-esd material produced.

"Introduction In studying the mine disaster files of the Bureau of Mires for preparation of a bulletin on coal-mine explosions, a table was compiled covering various features of fan installations and the handling of air currents at the time of and after the disasters. As a sidelight on this discussion, there was tabulated the loss of life and number of men injured.Discussion of collected dataOf the 164 disasters tabulated, 148 were explosions, 14 were fires, and 2 involved both fire and explosion. The total loss of life was 4,158 and 412 were injured. There were 145 disasters in bituminous coal mines, 13 in anthratice mines, 2 in lignite mines, 1 in a cannel coal nine, and 3 in metal mines. By States, 35 took place in Pennsylvania; 17 in West Virginia; 16 in Oklahoma and Alabama; 15 in. Kansas and Illinois; 12 in Indiana; 7 in Colorado; 6 in Kentucky; 3 each in Ohio Tennessee and Wyoming; 2 each in Arkansas, Montana, Washington, Virginia, New Mexico and Utah and 1 each in Iowa, Missouri, Maryland, and California."

The Bureau of Mines drilled and sampled the more important magnesite deposits in the Currant Creek Mining District, White Pine County, Nev. The properties of the Ala-Mar Magnesium Co., Inc., and the Nevada Magnesite Co. were examined in August 1942 by D. W. Butner, engineer of the Bureau of Mines, to determine the advisability of investigating the deposits under the strategic minerals program. Development involving diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling was started September 1, 1942, and was completed in the latter part of November 1942. The deposits are on unsurveyed public land in T. 12N., B. 59 E., M.D.B.&M., in an area of high relief ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet in altitude. Both properties are situated northwest of the Tonopah-Ely Highway, U.S. Highway 6, from which a dirt road extends about 4.6 miles northwesterly, about 35 miles southwest of Ely, to the Ala-Mar property, and another dirt road extends about 10 miles westerly, about 26 miles southwest of Ely, to the Nevada Magnesite property. The magnesite occurs as irregular nodules, veins, and lenses in a bedded calcareous tuff formation, which overlies a group of volcanic rocks, and which is capped by remnants of rhyolite flows.

In this final stage of a three-part investigation of the smelting of titania-bearing iron materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted semicontinuous smelting tests in a laboratory electric arc furnace on four concentrates and one are. The objective was to substantiate the significance of liquidus temperature measurements in predicting satisfactory slag compositions in electric furnace smelting of titaniferous magnetites to produce pig iron. Previously obtained liquidus temperature data were used in determining flux requirements. Self-fluxing pellets of either ore or concentrate plus fluxes and reductants were made to produce pig iron and slags containing 0.2 to 0.6 percent titanium. Individual constituents of the slags generally agreed within 5 percent with the value of the corresponding constituent of target composition. Liquidus temperature of furnace slags generally agreed within 50° C of the value obtained from corresponding nominal synthetic slag. The results of the three phases of the investigation may serve as guide-lines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetites and other titania and iron-bearing materials.

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

"Under the organic act establishing it, the Bureau of Mines is authorized to conduct investigations designed to improve health and safety conditions in the mineral industry and to promote efficient development and utilization of our mineral resources. The field of the Bureau's activity, therefore, begins with the commercial development of mineral deposits and ends with the production and utilization of the final marketable product.In order to serve more efficiently the various sections of the country, the Bureau has established, in addition to its main offices at Washington, D. C., eleven field experiment stations, three field offices and several mine rescue cars and mina rescue stations. These field branches are so distributed as to cover most of the mining districts of this country, including Alaska. The field service in general deals with specific experimental problems, cooperative work with non-governmental institutions, and mina rescue work, while the Washington office is the administrative head and is responsible for the distribution of general information, the chiefs of the technical and administrative divisions of the Bureau being stationed there.The Bureau is prohibited by law from doing work exclusively for the benefit of any private company or individual. Generally speaking, the Bureau does no assaying, ore testing, or similar service work for the benefit of private companies or individuals. In response to requests for work of this sort a list of assay and ore testing laboratories is supplied. In referring inquiries to com-mercial laboratories or consulting engineers, care is taken to mention several names so as to avoid designating any one establishment or engineer."

The report describes three experiments that were conducted to determine the effects of size and weight of the miner's battery pack on performance in the low seam coal environment. Three separate experiments were carried out in a simulated low seam coal mine. The first experiment tested the sensitivity of task measures (i.e., subjects performed locomotion) shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks) to detect variations in the size and weight of the battery pack. The results of the first experiment demonstrated that only the locomotion tasks were sensitive to size and weight variations. The second experiment, therefore, focused on the locomotion tasks and tested the effects of varying size and weight on task completion time. The third experiment was designed to compare the present battery pack to a radically different configuration of power cells. The most important findings were that changes in weight affected locomotion times but changes in size and configuration had small and inconsistent effects. Opinion data of subjects indicated a strong preference for a battery nark belt concept.

The porosity of a sand is usually the measure of its capacity for holding fluid, although porosity is sometimes selective; that is, a small percentage of the actual pore space (voids), particularly in fine-grained sandstones, may be isolated by the cementing material which prevents the entrance of fluids under normal conditions. Obviously, however, porosity determinations are essential to an engineering study of underground conditions of an oil field, and a simple and reliable method of obtaining a reasonably accurate figure for average porosity is desirable. This report describes a method suggested by Ruasell,3 which was used by the writer in the preparation of a report on the Texhoma-Gose pool, Archer County, Tex.4 The conditions in this pool were particularly favorable for obtaining an average porosity figure, in that some 30 to 35 core samples of the pay sand were available for analysis.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of columbium from 19 deposits (3 producers and 16 nonproducers) in 7 market economy countries (MEC?s). Brazil has the largest recoverable columbium resource, posessing approximately 2.39 million metric tons Wmt), or 69 pet of the MEC total (3.47 Mmt). The Western Hemisphere countries of Brazil, Canada and the United States contain 3.14 Mrnt of recoverable columbium or 90 pnt of the MEC total. Columbium recovered as a byproduct of tin mining is not included as part of MEC resources in this study. Currently producing mines are Araxa and Catalao in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada, These three mines have 2.42 Mmt of recoverable resources or approximately 69 pct of the MEC total. It is estimated that these mines, operating at full capacity, could satisfy cumulative MEC demand (based on an annual growth rate of 5.1 pct) for the next 20 yr. The United States is totally dependent upon foreign sources for its columbium supply. The majority of U.S. columbium is imported from Brazil in the form of steelmaking- grade ferrocolumbium. Canada has been the sole source of pyrochlore concentrates since Brazil discontinued exports in 1981. The United States also imports small (but important) quantities of columbium as columbite concentrates from Nigeria and Brazil, as columbite contained in tin slags from Thailand and Malaysia, and as synthetic concentrates from the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments using four different coal types to determine the effect of attack angle and symmetric bit wear on airborne respirable dust (ARD) generated by point-attack bits and in energy consumption. Neither had a significant effect on ARD at the 95-pct confidence level, but bit wear had a significant effect (95 pct confidence) on specific energy (energy per gram of cut coal) for three coal types, Depth of cut was the most significant factor affecting ARD and specific energy.
