Three comparatively simple, efficient, and rapid extraction methods for the dissolution of yttrium and rare-earth elements from a euxenite carbonate residue have been developed, using dilute sulfuric acid as the solvent. Extraction processes have resulted in yields of 98+ percent of the total rare-earth elements and yttrium contained in the residue and have given preliminary separation between the cerium-group and the yttrium-group rare-earth elements. Extraction procedures presented are: Procedure 1. -The recovery of total rare-earth elements and yttrium by a cold dilute sulfuric acid leach at a pH of 2.5. Procedure 2. -The recovery of yttrium and yttrium-group rare-earth elements by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid at 125° F. and a pH of 3.0, with subsequent recovery of the cerium-group rare-earth elements by a cold dilute sulfuric acid leach of the residue at a pH of 2.5. Procedure 3. -The recovery of the total rare-earth elements and yttrium by fractional leaching as in procedure 1, followed by boiling the sulfate solution, which precipitates the cerium-group rare-earth elements and leaves the yttrium-group rare-earth elements in solution.

The Bureau of Mines continued its research into the recovery of fluorine by the phosphoric acid acidulation defluorination of phosphate rock concentrates. A small process development unit with a capacity of about 10 kilo-grams of charge per hour was operated, and concentrates from both Idaho and Florida were processed. Over 80 percent of the fluorine was evolved and recovered as a dilute fluosilicic acid solution. Phosphate extraction from the concentrates always exceeded 98 percent. The fluorine was converted to a synthetic fluorspar product (3CaFa?SiOa) suitable for use as a slag conditioner in electric furnace steelmaking operations.

In response to increasing national energy requirements. highlighted by the continuing growth in demand for coal for the generation of electric power the output of bituminous coal and lignite in 1965 passed the 500-million-ton mark for the first time since 1956, thus emphasizing the steady up-ward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons in 1961. There were corresponding upward trends in consumption, exports mechanization, and productivity. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1965-512 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 487 million tons produced in 1964. The gain was attributed largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities, greater use at coke ovens, and an increase in exports.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945 the Bureau of Mines made approximately 200 miles of reconnaissance magnetic surveys in north-central Mirnesota. The survey started near the western end of the Mesabi Iron Range and extended into the area to the southwest, west, and northwest and also southward to the-northern limits of the Cuyuna Iron Range. The purpose of the survey was to data to assist exploration for iron ore in the region through:1. Supplying a relatively unit form network of traverses, by which and future surveys of localities in the urea ray be correlated. Suggesting localities in which more detailed magnetic surveys may be justified, and, Disclosing localities in which there is lass hope of obtaining significant results from further magnetic surveys.The instrument used was a Hotchkiss Superdip, and traverses for calibration and comparison were run with a Schmidt-type magnetometer. Field observations and work directly related thereto were carried out under contract by E. J. Lang-year Co., Minneapolis. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines planned, directed, and reviewed the survey."

Corrosion research is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine suitable construction materials for geothermal resource recovery plants. As part of this research, the corrosion resistance of 31 iron-nickel-, aluminum-, copper-, titanium-, and molybdenum-base alloys was characterized and evaluated in laboratory corrosion studies in low-and high-salinity geobrines representative of those found in the Imperial Valley, Calif. General, crevice, pitting, weld, and stress corrosion were measured at 105° and 232° C in deaerated brines and brines containing dissolved 02, C02, and CH4 General corrosion rates in deaerated brines at 105° and 232° C were usually below 5 mpy for the alloys tested except carbon steel, the low-alloy steels, Monel 400, 70-30 cupronickel, and the aluminum-base alloys. Dissolving carbon dioxide and methane in the brines at 2320 did not markedly alter these results. However, the introduction of oxygen, which can enter the brine during process operations, seriously degraded the corrosion resistance of many alloys by increasing the incidence of stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and, except for the titanium-base alloys, pitting. In deaerated brine at 2320 C, the general corrosion rates for carbon steel and the low-alloy steels were relatively unaffected by pH in the range of 6.1 to 3.0. However, general corrosion rates increased sharply below pH 3.0. In deaerated brine at 232° C, welds in several iron-, nickel-, and titanium-base alloys corroded at rates comparable to the general corrosion rates of the alloys, but the addition of oxygen to the brine increased corrosion rates for welds in Inconel 625 and E-Brite 26-1. Alloys exhibiting good corrosion resistance in the deaerated Salton Sea KGRA-type brine at 232° C were E-Brite 26-1, Inconel 625, Hastelloy S, Hastelloy G, Hastelloy C-276, TiCode-12, Ti-0.2Pd, Ti-2Ni, Ti-1.7W, and TZM. The alloys most resistant to corrosion in oxygenated Salton Sea KGRA-type brine at 232° C were the titanium-base alloys. These alloys appear the most suitable for use in the construction of geothermal resource recovery plants. Carbon steel and the low-alloy steels are unsatisfactory for high-temperature, high-salinity brines and alternative low-cost materials with improved corrosion resistance should be sought.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. It is most unfortunate that a few must often suffer , and perhaps die , that many may benefit from a fuller appreciation of the dangers surrounding mining operations , and the proper use of safeguards designed to offset these dangers . This has been the case during the last few months in the anthracite field , where several explosions , resulting in burnings and fatalities , were undoubtedly caused by the use of defective or improperly assembled flame safety lamps . Had this same lack of understanding regarding the proper assembly of this safety device , and had the same indifference on the part of the user in keeping the lamps locked at all times and in proper condition , been permitted in a region where the coal dust was explosive , a terrible disaster would surely have resulted . In nearly every coal -mining country , including the United States , the Davy and Clanny type of lamp has been superseded , and rightly so , by some kind of bonneted lamp . Bonneted lamps , especially of the naphtha type , while much safer than the unbonneted , have more parts and need more care in assembling . For this reason the burden of responsibility for their being properly assembled rests with the lamp man ; therefore , it is extremely important that only competent , conscientious men be given this work .

This report contains the findings of a study to perform a task and skill analysis of roof-bolting operations, with respect to the operational training requirements and to prepare detailed recommendations for the operational training system. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting underground coal mines, interviewing training and safety personnel, observing and interviewing roof-bolter operators, and reviewing present training programs and facilities. In conjunction with the mine visits an extensive literature search was conducted with emphasis on training, mine safety, and accidents involving the roof-bolting operation and roof-bolter operators. A number of training programs and training devices were considered resulting in the development of a recommended training program including training devices to be used and establishing training objectives.

The property of the lava Cap Gold: Mining Corporation is in the Nevada City-Grass Valley mining district about 5 miles east of Crass Valley, Calif. At present (July 1940) the plant is mining end milling about 390 tons of gold-silver ore a day; about 310 men are employed. This paper describes the mining methods used and presents mining costs for 1939, when 60,704 tons were mined by cut-and-fill stoping and 55,676 tons by square-setting.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most pervasive health problems in the mining industry, despite over 25 years of regulation. One of the loudest pieces of equipment used in underground mining is the continuous mining machine. Noise sample data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration indicate that 42% of noise overexposures between 2000 and 2005 involved continuous mining machine operators. Previously conducted field and laboratory tests have determined that the continuous mining machine conveyor system is a dominant noise source. Loud impacts occur as the conveyor chain flight bars, used to move the mined aggregate, traverse their path from the top to the underside of the conveyor deck. Various noise control treatments have been applied to abate noise caused by the conveyor system. A durable polyurethane coating has been developed for the conveyor flight bars, resulting in a time-weighted average reduction of 3 dB(A) for an eight-hour work shift. In an attempt to further reduce continuous mining machine operator overexposures, a similar urethane coating has been applied to the tail roller component of the conveyor system. Laboratory results showed a 2 dB(A) reduction in sound power levels, but the component failed during underground durability testing. An outer steel sleeve has been added to the urethane coating of the tail roller to enhance wear resistance during mining. The urethane jacketed tail roller is the latest effort, combined with previous noise treatments, to bring the continuous mining machine into compliance with federal noise regulations.

For several years the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington have been cooperating, in a study of coal tabling. The first pert of the work consisted of experiments using, one of the commercial-sized coal washing tables in the laboratories of the College of Mine. As an outgrowth of this work, hindered-settling classification has been successfully applied in the tabling of coal4, and several important improvements, mainly in the riffling, have been made in the table itself. Both of these developments have resulted in increasing the rapacity and efficiency of the coal-washing table. In order to facilitate further progress in this work an investigation has been undertaken to throw more light on the mechanism of table separation. This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of the flow of arsenic-containing materials in the United States, based on the best data available in 1991, includes a consideration of arsenic as a byproduct of the processing of nonferrous metals, the fate of arsenic in manufacturing wastes, the quantity of arsenic used in products, tile fate of arsenic in dissipative uses, and the useful life of discarded products. Where possible, estimates are given of the amounts of arsenic lost from the materials flow. Arsenic byproduct of mining nonferrous metals. Historically, most U.S. production has been from the states of Montana, Washington, and Utah. The smelters in these states are believed to be the areas of the country where arsenic is most concentrated in the soil, tailings ponds, and waste dumps. Since the closure of the last domestic producer of arsenic in 1985, all arsenic has been derived from imported sources. Historically, arsenic was important in agricultural applications as an insecticide, herbicide, and cotton desiccant. As the environmental movement gained momentum and the toxicity of arsenic became better understood, most of the agricultural uses for arsenic were banned. Beginning about 1975, the use of arsenic as a wood preservative began to grow. After 1980, wood preservative uses became more important than agricultural applications. By 1990, 70% of the arsenic consumed in the United States was used by the wood preservative industry and 20% by the agricultural industry. The major source of domestic arsenic emissions in 1989 was from the U.S. copper processing indus¬try. About 7,800 mt/yr of arsenic was discarded in leach dumps, tailings, and slag. Another 800 mt/yr was liberated to the atmosphere and 1/100 mt/yr was exported in copper concentrates. On the consumption side, 9,200 mt/yr was lost, mostly from dissipative agricultural uses and the disposal of obsolete arsenical products.

Thermodynamic properties of metal halides and, in particular, vapor pressures have become of great importance in recent years owing to increased application of chemical processing to extraction of metals from their ores. Vapor pressure data serve not only as a valuable source of latent heat of vaporization and fusion values but also differences in metal-halide vapor pressures often provide the basis for their separation by conventional mass transfer operations. This literature search was made to provide a ready reference to experimental vapor-pressure data of metal halides and oxyhalides. Results are reported in two main sections: (1) A tabulation of vapor- pressure references for each of the metal halides (listed by metal) for which actual experimental data are reported (table 1), and (2) a bibliography of the citations. Metal halides and oxyhalides are listed by chemical formula and chemical name, based on the stock4 system. To facilitate location of the references, a listing of the journal titles and their abbreviations follows the bibliography.

The vapor pressures of tungsten (VI ) chloride ( WC1 ) and hafnium ( IV ) iodide ( HFI ) were measured by a metal diaphragm technique . Vapor pressure values were obtained to permit calculation of the thermodynamic properties of the vaporization processes of the compounds . The vapor pressure data of WC16 are represented by the following equations for the liquid , B - solid , and a- solid over the temperature intervals indicated : - log P = 8.194 3,253 /T Liquid , 281.5 ° to 325 ° C : B - solid 230.0 ° to 281.5 ° C : log P a - solid 185.0 ° to 230.0 ° C : log Pam *** = 8.794 - 3,588 / T = 9.615 - 3,996 /T where T is the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin . The heats of vaporization and sublimation are 14.9 , 16.4 , and 18.3 kcal / g mole , respectively . The entropy of vaporization at the normal boiling point , 330 ° C , was 24.3 eu . The fusion temperature , 281.5 ° C , and transition temperatures , 230.0 ° and 185 ° C , were found by thermal analysis .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report discusses the results of research conducted in the USBM experimental mine at its Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the alarm times of smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) sensors, and a point type heat sensor (PTIIS) to slowly developing coal-conveyor belt fires. The tests were conducted at air velocities of 0.44 and 0.97 m/s, The data clearly indicate that smoke sensors provide earlier warning of fire than 10 ppm CO sensors, and that 10 ppm CO sensors provide earlier warning than PTHS, A success rate of 1.0 (indicating detection of every test fire) was obtained for both smoke and C8 sensors. For the PTHS, the success rate was 0.57 at the lower air velocity, decreasing to 0 at the higher air velocity, Data are also presented showing the sequence of fire events and detection events at the two air velocities as a function of time. Results show that early detection and warning of underground mine fires will improve the probability of miners' escape.

There is probably no industry , trade , or art in which mercury is used but what has produced some cases of mercury poisoning . This is true of the mining and smelting of mercury , where the hazard has long been recognized . When the ore contains free mercury or the more soluble salts , and when the workings are underground and are poorly ventilated , cases occur , but there are a far greater number of cases among the employees about the reduction works . 3 In 1863 William V. Wells visited the mines at Almaden , * Spain , which were worked by convicts . He reported that the men at the furnaces suffered severely , being able to work only about one week out of four , when it was necessary to transfer them to places where the exposure was less . He states that "pale cadaverous faces and leaden eyes are consequences of even these short periods . " Mercury , like lead , when absorbed in small amounts at intervals , as daily, over an extended period of time will result in symptoms of poisoning . This is due to the fact that the mercury is eliminated from the body more slowly than it is absorbed . The frequency and severity of cases of mercury poisoning are far less with modern methods of mining and recovery of the metal than formerly . However , further reduction is possible and much can be done by both the workmen and the operators by following the proper precautionary measures , some of which are described in this chapter .
