A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. This paper i8 a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines Bold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941 Y. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.

Two general schemes have been used for the determination of gold and silver in material containing considerable quantities of copper ; one is known as the " all fire " method , and the other as the , " combination " , or " wet and dry" method . The all fire crucible method , using an excess charge of litharge , has been found satisfactory when the copper content of an ore is under 6 per cent , ( Loevy , J. , Zur Edelmetallbestimmung in hochprozentigen Kupfererzen : Chem. Ztg . Jarhrg . 35 , 1911 , p . 278 ) , or where the precious metal value is so great that a small sample can be used . In the latter case , silica is added until the copper ratio is sufficiently low . If there is more than 6 per cent of copper in an ore , the lead button obtained from a crucible fusion will require repeated scorification before . it can be cupelled successfully . Rescorification is not only tedious , but also causes a slag loss of precious metals . In combination methods , the copper is dissolved , and the gold and silver in the residue . is determined by fire assay Although some combination methods have given satisfactory results for gold and silver , they are not applicable when an estimation of the platinum metals is required . Since substances containing platinum are frequently high in copper , a study of methods which might be used for the estimation of small quantities of gold , silver , and the platinum metals in such material was considered worth while . The estimation of platinum in ores by fire assay methods has been described in Technical Paper 270 of the bureau; ( Davis , C.W. , The detection and estimation of platinum in ores : U. S. Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 270 , 1921. ) the present paper , which is supplementary to that report , deals chiefly with the application of combination methods , taking them up to the point where the fire assay is to be applied .

This document presents the general philosophy of an experimental system in an operating coal mine. The conclusions drawn from this experience are presented and a typical design for a large coal mine is described.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Flute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co.Claims leased by the Lincoln Mines, Inc., are in secs. 25 and 36, T. 3 S., R. 56 E.; secs. 30 and 31, T. 3 S., R. 57 E.: and sec. 1, T. 4 S., R 56 E., M. Merle F. Schofield is president of the company and maintains an office at Hike, Nev. These claims were leased by H. P. Progress made by the quarrying and related industries of the United States during 1939 included increases in the number of men employed and the number of man-hours worked and reductions in the death and injury rates per million man-hours of exposure to risk. Forty-seven States reported quarries in operation; in each of 26 States the industry employed 1,000 or more men. Of these 26 States, 16 reported lower accident rates than in 1938. Among the operations of various types for which separate figures are published in this bulletin, the limestone, lime, and cement groups reported lower accident rates. During 1939, 79,449 men were employed in the quarrying industries. The period of operation of the plants averaged 236 clays per employee, with a total working time that equaled nearly 144 million man-hours. Accidents at the plants resulted in 48 deaths and 5,204 disabling injuries among the workers. Expressed as frequency rates, the accidents represented 0.33 fatality and 36.18 injuries for each million man-hours of work performed during the year. The major cause of fatal accidents inside the quarries was falls or slides of rock or overburden; nine deaths were reported from this cause. Four men were killed by explosives and four by falls of persons. Nonfatal injuries inside the quarries were clue chiefly to handling materials; about one-sixth of the total number at all operations in connection with quarries and related plants were in this class. Flying objects also caused numerous injuries, although only about one-half as many as did handling materials. Next in numerical importance were injuries from falls of persons. Then followed accidents caused by falls or slides of rock or overburden and accidents caused by machinery.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future, To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 252 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1976 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Eighteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,065 gas analyses prior to 1976. The first 3, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 15

"In California the history of tin mining began in Riverside County in 1853, with the discovery of the Temescal deposit. This deposit remained the only one with a production record until recent small shipments were made from Kern and San Bernardino Counties.According to the California State Division of Mines, Temescal's total output has been about 125 tons of tin, all of which was produced in 1891 and 1892. It was idle from 1892 to 1928.An extensive but unsuccessful development campaign carried on in 1928 and 1929 by the American Tin Corp. produced only half a ton of the metal, and the property again was idle until 1943, when an attempt to resume operations proved unsuccessful. After 1929 no production is recorded from California until 1944 end 1945, when small shipments of sorted ore from Kern County returned about 2 tons of tin and 1-1/3 tons was recovered from sorted ore and concentrates from San Bernardino County. The total output of tin from California has been less than 150 tons, and less than 4 percent of this was produced in the last 50 years, in spite of numerous attempts during that period to promote tin mines,So marked a scarcity of a metal essential in war makes any occurrence interesting. When some prospects were reported to the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, in a new field 10 miles east of Gorman, they were at once examined and the preliminary exploration by the owners closely followed. Eventually one was explored by bulldozing end diamond drilling as a joint project by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.To supplement this joint project, the authors undertook independently a general survey of tin in California - a survey designed to check reported occurrences and to bring their status up to date. In this work, the 37 places described in the text and spotted on the accompanying map, (fig. 1) were visited end sampled. Although traces of tin were found in many pieces, nothing that suggested a tin mine was found anywhere, and it is difficult to base much hope for appreciable future tin production upon anything found thus far in California."

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 89 water well drillers died on the job between 1992 and 2002, and 28 of these deaths were electrocutions (Figure 1). In fact, elec­trical accidents are the leading on-the-job killer of water well drillers. The use of electricity is such an integral part of our lives that we usually take it for granted, but if we don?t understand or choose to ignore the hazards associated with electricity, the results can be deadly. Why is electrical shock so dangerous? If the voltage (of a shock) is sufficient to drive electrical current through your body, just 10 milliamps of cur­rent (1000 milliamps = 1 amp) can cause muscles to contract and prevent you from releasing an energized wire or tool in your grip. As little as 30 milliamps of current can paralyze your breathing, and 75 milli­amps can cause your heart to stop pumping blood (ventricular fibrillation). As a comparison, a small bedroom night-light draws about 30 to 60 milliamps. Other factors influence how severely you?ll be shocked if you touch a live electrical circuit, such as the path electrical current takes through your body and how long it flows, as well as your body weight. How much voltage is needed to drive electrical cur­rent through your body? Not much! Generally, any power source at 50 volts AC or higher is considered dangerous.

On December 16, the General Services Administration (GSA) suspended weekly sales of surplus silver from the national defense stockpile because Congress approved the Defense Appropriation Act, which contained an amendment to halt silver sales. The amendment, introduced by Senator James A. McClure (R., Idaho), prohibits sales for 6 months while the impact of the sales and alternative methods of disposal are evaluated. The GSA sold 2 million troy ounces since sales started October 14. 46.5 million troy ounces were authorized to be sold during this fiscal year and an additional 58.6 million troy ounces were authorized to be sold over the following two fiscal years. The stockpile held 139.5 million troy ounces of silver when sales began in October. Brush Wellman, Inc., a vertically integrated producer of beryllium products announced plans to modify its Delta, Utah beryllium concentrate processing facility to utilize beryllium concentrates containing as little as 7% beryllium oxide. The company plans to invest $2.5 million for this modification with completion expected in mid-1983. Implementation of this plan to consume lower grade beryllium minerals will significantly increase world reserves of beryllium concentrates.

Heat content measurements were conducted for GaPo.996 and InPo.986 over the temperature range from 298° to 1,100° K, and for In2S2.897 over the range from 298° to 1,200° K. Both the actual experimental data and values adjusted to conform with the stoichiometric compositions (GaP, InP, and In2S3) were reported. Entropy increments above 298.15° K were calculated for the stoichiometric compounds, and heat content and heat capacity equations were derived.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of an agreement with the Bear Coal Co., Somerset, Col o., evaluated the response of a coal mine roof to time lapse. Time lapse, the interval between exposure and support of the roof, was studied using both instrumentation and statistics. Instrumentation studies were designed to equate displacement and rates of displacement with areas of roof left unsupported from 15 minutes to more than 4 days. A statistical study was completed to compare roof fall occurrence with time lapse intervals encountered during normal room-and-pillar mining. Results from this investigation show time lapse, in the Bear mine, to he insignificant with respect to roof stability after installation of permanent support.

This paper describing the milling practice at the concentrator of the Harmony Mines Co. is one of a series being; prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in the United States. For the period February 15, 1929, to June 1, 1929, the concentrator treated 200 tons of copper ore per day containing 3.84 per cent copper and recovered 99.2 per cent of the total copper in concentrates averaging 26.61 per cent copper. Milling practice at the Harmony Mines is in most respects similar to the usual practice at the average flotation concentrator producing bulk flotation concentrates. The exceptionally high recovery is due to a number of minor conditions. These minor details will be stressed throughout this paper.

Improvements in remote fire fighting technology are needed to reduce miner exposure to the dangers of fires and possibly save the lives of those who may become trapped. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with U.S. Foam Technologies, Inc1., conducted a series of experiments at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to study the stability, transport, control and fire extinguishing effectiveness of nitrogen-enhanced foam technology. Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

The Bureau of Mines has been involved for several years in the development of processes for the recycling of solid wastes. As part of this program, a project was initiated to determine the feasibility of producing secondary pig iron from auto scrap. During the test period, 86,000 pounds of shredded auto scrap, along with petroleum coke and fluxing agents, was charged to a submerged-arc furnace of 1-ton nominal capacity. Eighty-eight thousand pounds of pig iron, with an average carbon content of 3.90 percent and an average copper content of 0.2 percent, was produced at an electrical consumption of 512 kW-hr per net ton. A cost estimate of the process showed that the pig, iron might be produced at a cost of $57 per ton.

Under terms of cooperative agreements, the Federal Bureau of Mines Inter-mountain Experiment Station assisted the General Services Administration (GSA) in operating the manganese-ore purchasing depots at Deming. N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. A resident metallurgist stationed at the depots directed sampling of the ore lots for assaying, took samples for amenability testing, calculated acceptances for payments to shippers, and served as technical adviser to the depot manager. The Intermountain Experiment Station at Salt Lake City, Utah, tested the amenability of the ores to determine how much of the manganese could be recovered in concentrates assaying a minimum of 40 percent manganese (Mn) and containing a maximum of 16 percent iron (Fe), 15 percent silica (Si02) plus alumina (AI203), 0.3 percent phosphorus (P), and I percent copper (Cu) plus lead (Pb) plus zinc (Zn). All chemical analyses of the ores and test products were done at Salt Lake City. In all, 567 ore lots submitted to the Deming depot were tested by flotation to determine their amenability to concentration into specification-grade material; 421 lots were amenable, and 146 were unamenable, primarily because of high copper content or excessive silica or iron in the flotation concentrate. Chemical analyses totaling 42,700 were made on the ores submitted to the Deming depot and on the products of the amenability-test program.
