The large-scale vibrating screen has been applied widely in coal industry and other industrial areas as a kind of important device. As vibration mechanical device, it works very hardly and works in very bad environment so that the structure of screen is damaged easily. Therefore, it is very important that how to detect the fault of structure as early as possible to make the repair schedule reasonably and economically and to avoid the body hurt and device damage. As a kind of important structure of vibrating screen, the lower crossbeam is the main carrying structure and it is easily damaged, so it is regarded as a researched object in this thesis and it is tested under the load in the laboratory. Based on the test, acoustic emission wave signals can be got-ten by modern acoustic emission testing technique. Then, the ?wavelet packet - energy? from the characteristics of acquiring signals is used as neural network input vector. In the BP network structure design, the design of a hidden layer with variable number of BP network is established. Based on the error by contrast, the best nerve number can be identified in the hidden layer. Through integrated analysis, using Levenberg-Marquard BP study algorithm, network-training errors are relatively small, the acoustic emission signal is used in BP neural network as a pattern of recognition. In Matlab6.5, neural network model identification is created and taking advantage of nonlinearity and the ability of learning and memory of Neural Network, this model is fixed by training structure of network with training samples. The work presented shows that acoustical emission signal processing and research on early fatigue fault diagnosis based on the wavelet and the neural network is viable.

Semi-industrial test on fine products of Meishan dressing plant was carried out with type RP80/25 high pressure roller mill produced by Homburg Corporation of Germany, and the influences of such factors as energy consumption, water containing, throughput and circulating load on rolling effect were investigated. Closed circuit experiment result showed that Meishan iron ore could be suitable for powder grinding with high pressure roller mill, and energy consumption of the operation was declined by 25%~30%, which was favorable for energy-saving, increasing production efficiency and improving grinding effects. According to above experimental results, this paper put forward the technical proposal of application of high pressure roller mill in Meishan, and pointed out some technical problems which needed to be settled urgently in technology disposal.

Large-scale separation or flotation cells, used in the primary extraction in the oil sands industry, are integral parts of the overall process of bitumen extraction. Good regulation of the interface level between the bitumen froth and the middlings in these cells can result in a significant improvement in bitumen recovery and throughput, and heavily influence process economics. Automatic control of such industrial processes presents challenges such as multi-phase flow dynamics, variable process gain and time delays, poor quality of measurements and significant disturbances. This paper details a case study application of development of multiple models of the dynamics of the interface level and the design of model predictive controllers (MPC) for a separation cell process. A Model predictive controller (MPC) using linear models is designed and implemented in real time on an industrial separation cell. The industrial implementation results show that the MPC scheme provides significant benefits over the current operations which use a PID controller. The benefits include significant reduction in the variance of the interface level resulting in higher bitumen recovery and smoother downstream operation plus energy savings due to reduced underflow pump speed.

Limestone is used for neutralization of acid leachates in a number of hydrometallurgical processes. The aim of this study was to clarify how limestone ground to different particle sizes can neutralize sulfuric acid. The laboratory scale ball mill was used in grinding experiments carried out using ball sizes of 20, 30 and 40 mm and volumetric slurry densities of 30, 40 and 50 percents. Varied grinding times were used in order to produce limestone samples with different particle size classes on which the neutralization potential and rate were determined. The results of the study showed that the neutralization potential of limestone is not dependent on its particle size between 5 and 120 µm. However, the particle size strongly affected the neutralization rate of sulfuric acid: The smaller the particle size, the higher the rate of neutralization. Thus, when optimizing the cost efficiency of the process, the optimal degree of grinding should be considered taking in account the required residence time in neutralization phase.

Stirred milling of laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on a siliceous goethitic (SG) nickel laterite sample (-2000 µm particle size) to evaluate the effect of operating conditions such as stirrer speed, grinding time, pH, solid content, water salinity and charge volume. The target was to produce a -38 µm fraction in the milling product with high nickel recovery and grade. Addition of dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate) was also optimized with respect to the rheology of the slurry. In terms of stress intensity, the optimum grinding conditions for selective size reduction were: 1000 rpm, 50 per cent charge volume. At higher stress intensity (2000 rpm), Ni recovery in the -38 µm product was higher, but Ni grade was low, due to the breakage of the harder siliceous particles. Decreasing the yield stress by modifying slurry pH or adding dispersant improved the rheological properties of the pulp, but had no great influence on Ni upgrade in the fine product. Modifying water salinity by adding 2 M NaCl had also little effect. The breakage of the +38 µm particles in the feed determined Ni upgrade greatly. Ni grade in the -38 µm product decreased with grinding time, suggesting that the Ni-bearing minerals break first, while the harder siliceous minerals have a lower breakage rate. The breakage rates with respect to sample mass for Ni, Mg and Si indicate that: Mg > Ni > Mass > Si. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min. The Ni grade increased from 0.88 per cent to 1.35 per cent (upgrade 54 per cent), with 24 per cent Ni recovery. Keywords: fine grinding, stirred media mill, nickel laterite, slurry rheology

Hydrothermal method was applied in the preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers in airtight re-actor using gypsum as primary materials. The optimum conditions of preparation are as follows: pH value 9.8~10.1, concentration 5%, material size 18.1µm, which were determined by the analysis of the diameter of CaSO4 whiskers through SEM. On these conditions a product of ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with diameter of 0.19µm and aspect ratio of 98 is obtained. Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with different concentrations, modified by titanate NDZ-401, were added into polypropylene as intensifier and composites of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers/ polypropylene were prepared by melting-extruding method. Mechanical performance of the composites was tested and surface morphology of the composites was observed by SEM. The results indicated that impact notched izod of the composites was enhanced by 49.5% compared with pure polypropylene when 10.0% Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers were added into polypropylene and toughening effect was very remarkable. Dispersion behaviour and interface phenomenon of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers in polypropylene matrix were investigated by SEM. The results indicated that Dispersion performance of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers modified by titanate NDZ-401 in polypropylene matrix is good, which improved mechanical performance of composites to some extent.

"The rising demand for metals today, coupled with the scarcity of primary sources for raw materials threatens both technological advancements and industrial manufacturing. In order to meet the demand, metals and other resources trapped in waste streams, have to be harnessed. This philosophy supports circular economy, where metals and other resources are kept in a closed loop. The pickling acid recovery system of most stainless steel production is one such example where the dissolved metals such as iron, nickel and chromium are currently not completely recovered due to the limitations of the current technologies. The aim of this study was to assess the available metals recovery methods from extremely concentrated acids. The main aim is to simultaneously recover metals and keep sulphuric acid reusable in acid circulation process. From the available literature, the most promising methods were chosen for laboratory experiments. Based on experimental work, the results and observations of electrodeposition, solvent extraction, and freeze crystallization are provided. INTRODUCTION Pickling in stainless steel production is an essential surface treatment process (Regel-Rosocka, M. (2010); Agrawal and Sahu, 2009). It is applied for removing surface films such as oxides and chromium-depleted layers to improve the corrosion resistance and surface finish of steel (Regel-Rosocka, 2010). Whilst the process greatly improves the surface finish of the stainless steel, it generates large amount of used acid, containing dissolved metals including chromium, iron, and nickel (Agrawal and Sahu, 2009). Recovery of acid is common practice for most steel producing industries (Nyman and Koivunen, 1986). In this work, acid regeneration process is investigated so as to simultaneously reusing sulfuric acid and recovering the dissolved metals. Recovery of valuable metals even in very small amounts would also bring additional revenue to the steel production industry. At a time when metal production has also been challenged by lack of natural resources for raw materials, secondary sources for metals such as the acid pickling process therefore, have greater potential as supplements. From earlier studies, electrodeposition (Giovanardi and Orlando, 2011; Kuznetsov et al., 200; Rögener et al., 2012; Surviliene et al., 2006), solvent extraction (Alguacil and López 1996; Haghshenas et al., 2009; Kesieme et al., 2013) and freeze crystallization (Beyer et al.,2003; Hasan et al.,2017; Van der Ham et al., 1999) are some of the most established potential methods. Earlier studies have also shown that simultaneous recovery of acid and metals would require combination of different methods. This is primarily due to the nature of very stable metal containing complex compounds formed during pickling. These complexes must be broken down to free the metals for further recovery processes."

It is now common to have archival history of thousands of sensors sampled every second over long time. Yet we frequently have process engineers complain:??.We are drowning in data but starving for information??. How can these rich data sets be put to use? This paper addresses the issue of information and knowledge extraction from data with emphasis on process and performance monitoring including fault detection and isolation. Most of the major plant, factory, process, equipment and tool disruptions are avoidable, and yet preventable fault detection and diagnosis strategies are not the norm in most industries. It is not uncommon to see simple and preventable faults disrupt the operation of an entire integrated manufacturing facility. For example, faults such as malfunctioning sensors or actuators, inoperative alarm systems, poor controller tuning or configuration can render the most sophisticated control systems useless. Such disruptions can cost in the excess of $1 million per day and on the average they rob the plant of 7% of its annual capacity. Over the last decade the fields of multivariate statistics and data visualization and analysis methods have merged to develop powerful sensing and condition-based monitoring systems for predictive fault detection and diagnosis.These methods rely on the notion of sensor fusion whereby data from many sensors or units are combined with process information, such as physical connectivity of process units, to give a holistic picture of health of an integrated plant. Such methods are at a stage where these strategies are being implemented for off-line and on-line deployment. In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

As a kind of complex physicochemical process, grinding would affect the subsequent mineral processing such as flotation considerably. In this study, the effect of wet grinding on malachite and calcite flotation using sodium oleate as collector was studied. And the mechanism of the effect of grinding was investigated. Laboratory scale grinding and flotation testing of malachite and calcite samples were performed. Different grinding media were used, including steel balls and zirconia balls. It was the aim of this work to study the effect of grinding on the pulp chemistry paying particular attention to flotation recovery. The effect of grinding media and different addition location of sodium oleate on malachite and calcite flotation was studied. The methodology used in this project involved grinding the ore with and without the addition of sodium oleate in mill, measuring the pH and metal ions produced by minerals after grinding, adding various quantities of sodium oleate and determining the copper recovery. The presence of species of products on the minerals after grinding was probed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the metal ions produced by minerals after grinding were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). It is showed that the mil-ling environments evaluated significantly affected the flotation of malachite and calcite. This study also discusses the effecting mechanism of grinding environment on floatability of malachite and calcite.

Pyrometallurgical reactors constitute a key processing component in the total primary and industrial/recycling resource cycle, being involved both in primary smelting, converting and extraction, as well as the reprocessing of scrap, from aluminium cans to end-of-life automobiles. Therefore the pyrometallurgical reactor?s role in achieving sustainability is the central theme discussed in this paper since optimising their operation minimises waste, residue and offgas (NOx, dioxin, CO2) and maximises product quality and therefore efficiency. To effectively control the overall resource cycle, one needs to take a systems modelling approach of the whole cycle, seeking to also understand the dynamic process behaviour of the individual components of the cycle, and then especially the part that contributes most to the chemical conversion, namely the pyrometallurgical reactor. This paper highlights the role of pyrometallurgical thermodynamics in the whole resource cycle and specifically places equilibrium thermochemistry in the context of process dynamics where large, variable inventories are recycled or maintained within the system. This paper will therefore review the semi-empirical dynamic modelling tools, which are used to model complex systems with the specific goal of developing dynamic predictive models, which also include slag-alloy chemistry, towards controlling the recycling in a feed forward manner. To illustrate the primary production of metals, high carbon ferrochrome and Ni-Cu-matte smelting will be presented as a brief case study. Also fundamental studies in blast furnace and waste incineration kilns will be given. It also will show how the distributed nature of the chemistry of melts in the case of primary extraction, and industrial (recycling) materials such as recycled end-of-life vehicles, have a significant impact on the process outcomes and model predictions. It is therefore argued that the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics in metallurgical reactors play a final crucial role in modelling the closed material cycle, but only when it is used in conjunction with process systems theory based on reconciled data for parameter estimation and model calibration. System models for aluminium and car recycling will be given as well as a dynamical system model that describes the interconnected material flows for Ag, Au, Bi, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, PGM, Sn and Zn for a study on lead-free solder.

The process conditions and mineral characters of cleaning separation stage in magnetite concentration plant are studied in the paper, and the affecting factors and the methods to increase the concentrate grade are analysed and given. The BKJ cleaning special drum magnetic separator is developed specially for the cleaning stage according to process conditions and mineral character. The separation mechanism, structure characters, separation process and excellent adaptability of BKJ special magnetic separator are described. The results in Zhangjiawa Concentration Plant show that the BKJ special drum magnetite separators play an important role in increasing the concentrate grade and improving the economic benefit.

Porous silica was obtained by acid leaching of chrysotile. The porous silica had been characterized by chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectros-copy (FT-IR), and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. It is shown in this study that the porous silica retains the nanofibrous morphology of the original chrysotile, and produces a high specific surface area (SBET) of 391. 8 m2/g and total pore volume of 1. 05 mL/g. The increase in SBET and the total pore volume of the porous silica reflect the formation of micropores of 1.2~1.5nm and meso-pores of 3.2~3.8nm in diameter inside the porous structure. The hysteresis loop of N2 adsorption-desorption curve indicates mainly slit-shaped pores. The porous silica is amorphous, but its structure is regular to some extent. The structural unit of silica from chrysotile is a SiO4 tetrahedron and six-member silicon-oxygen rings with the tetrahedral positioned alternately up and down in the six-member rings.

Drilling and Blasting are two important unit operations in the production cycle of a mine and a strong link exists between these two and other unit operations/subsystems like loading, transportation, and crushing. Under the present concept of ? Mine to Mill?, it is important to optimize the drilling and blasting operations by applying scientific approach to drilling and blasting using sophisticated instruments and new technologies, which depends heavily on Information technology (IT) to meet this imperative. Development of innovative models and software has lead to blast optimization process. Till date, the blast results are evaluated in terms of available empirical approaches like powder factor, which are too simple to exclude some key parameters or lack in providing reliability because of non-availability of user friendly IT enabled techniques. Although with the help of developed approaches, formulation of user-friendly software to assist the site engineers in effective post blast assessment has started but there is a dearth of holistic approach to design an optimum blast considering the techno-economic feasibility of the subsystems and the geo-mining conditions to achieve blast optimization. The science of IT enablement in drilling and blasting is capable to build innovative models for achieving blast performances which will be doped with productivity, economy and safety with due regard to environment. The present paper discusses the use of existing IT enablement in various mines of India citing the Indian scenario and the future requirements for achieving the techno-economics in overall mining operations.

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. "The report presents the summary of the JSC Irgiredmet’s activities in the field of preconcentration of ores. As of 2018, the Institute has almost 40-years’ experience in this area. Over the years, Irgiredmet has done a lot of work – from development to implementation of new technologies of ore piece sorting and concentration based on X-ray radiometric separation (XRRS). INTRODUCTION Preconcentration has been a challenging issue of the mining industry over the last decades. The implementation of this technology can significantly increase mining efficiency. The main application of preconcentration is improvement of mined ores quality, however new and more complex issues have arisen with the evolution of the technology. Irgiredmet has started to develop an efficient preconcentration technology for gold-bearing and rare-metal ores 40 years ago. The X-ray radiometric method widely used at that date as a method of elements determination in geology and geophysics become the ground for this work (1). Since that time, the Irgiredmet Institute has developed and significantly improved the technology of piece ore sorting, or XRRS (2-5), that is currently also known as the X-ray fluorescence method. The progress of the XRRS development achieved by Irgiredmet in cooperation with Rados LLC, Tekhnoros LLC (Krasnoyarsk), Rados-Service LLC and CJSC Tekhnogen (Ekaterinburg) has proved efficiency and applicability of the XRRS technology for processing a wide range of minerals and solving of various technological problems (7-9) compared to other radiometric methods (6). Furthermore, obtained results are supported by numerous studies, trials and implementations. The significance of ore preconcentration for greenfield and brownfield projects determined the establishing a new subdivision of Irgiredmet, the XRRS Technology Center (XRRS TC), that has provided the Institute with a completed range of processing technologies, from preconcentration to producing final products. Over the past few years, the XRRS Technology Center has carried out studies and testing of a numerous (more than 100) projects, mines and deposits of gold-bearing ores, rare metal ores (Be, Ta, Nb, W, Mo), base metal ores (Cu, Sb, Zn, Pb), ferrous metal ores (Fe, Ti, Cr), rough diamonds and coal. The XRRS Technology Center performs various specific studies and testing not only in Russia, but as well as in Kazakhstan, Georgia and Mongolia. Mines and companies from Chile, India, China, Iran and other countries also take an active interest in the XRRS technology."

Mining activities belong to human history, they are lost in the mists of time. They usually impact on large portions of the territory, both directly (exploitation areas and logistic activities directly related to exploitation) and indirectly (exploited material handling, processing and storage areas). As a result, at the end of mine life cycle, dismissed areas usually cannot be directly re-utilized without efficient and well addressed rehabilitation actions. Main goal of the proposed approach was to analyze the results obtained when a set of procedures, based on the collection and the analysis of remote sensed data, is developed to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation of land contaminated by extractive industry activities and to perform a monitoring and registration of the environmental impact of such operations by the application and the integration of modern information technologies, as Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study was developed in the framework of the EU-Asia program of the European union (EXTRACT-IT Project-Contract No: CN/ASIA IT&C/006 (89870): Application of Information Technologies for the sustainable management of Extractive industry activities) and it was addressed to three different dismissed mine areas in India, Thailand and China, respectively. The results, in terms of methodologies selected, strategies applied and results obtained, are described with particular reference to Fuxin coal mine area in China.

Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. "The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated in two slurry systems, i.e. gold cyanidation and geopolymerisation. The kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced and the cyanide consumption was reduced in the cyanidation of a pyrite concentrate using ultrasonication, probably due to the prevention of leaching passivation, the improvement of the dissolution of the gold host sulphides and the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate. The effectiveness for ultrasonication was improved with the injection of oxygen and the addition of dithiophosphate through enhancing the formation of the oxidation radicals and selectively inducing cavitation bubbles directly at the sulphide interfaces. Ultrasonically enhanced cyanidation could render currently uneconomic deposits viable for extraction by improved cavitation efficiency with the aid of surfactants.Ultrasonication increased the compressive strength of the formed geopolymers through accelerating the dissolution of the Al-Si materials, strengthening the bonds at the solid particle/gel phase interfaces, enhancing the polycondensation process and improving the formation of semi-crystalline to crystalline phases. The use of power ultrasound will yield high-performance geopolymer materials."
