"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

This paper describes a generic approach to analysing the environmental and economic performance of a generic global mineral/metal value chain, with the express view of improving the quality of prospective decision-making within the industry in order to ensure more sustainable outcomes. As a point of departure we propose that it is not possible to place metals in the context of the sustainable development of society without paying due regard to the entire metals value chain. Thus, the starting point for this analysis is the development of a global stocks flows and transformations model, for the metal of interest. Any aspect of the value chain, e.g. “metals refining, “goods manufacture”, “use and disposal”, can be assessed, either relative to other stages in the value chain, or in more detail by focusing on the technologies used within that stage. The use of this model as a decision support tool is explored here for the case of copper. Both primary and secondary production routes are enumerated, covering a range of processes, for seven distinct geographic regions around the globe. The value of the modelling approach is explored for different energy mixes. In particular, the case study examines the impact of increased recycling on the (re) distribution of global and regional environmental impacts for technologies-in-place in these different regions. The aim of these case studies is to highlight to the minerals processing and metals refining industries their potential role in a more sustainable global society.

Metal oxide nano-particles are used as additives in various industrial applications such as pigments in paints, additives in adhesives, plastics, cosmetics, functional coatings, personal care and health care products, for antibacterial applications and more recently in heat transfer applications. In most of these applications, usually dry nano-particle powders are added to the formulations. However, often it becomes difficult to achieve a uniform and stable dispersion of nano-particles in the given formulation. Thus, a scalable and commercially viable process for in-situ production of stable nano-particles suspensions in the desired medium will certainly be more beneficial. Ultra-fine grinding in high energy mills (planetary mill, stirred media mill) has been used to produce fine particles (sub-micron size). However, in order to obtain nano-particles (particle size <100 nm), the choice of appropriate dispersant and solvent is crucial, since freshly generated nano-particles tend to agglomerate due to their high surface reactivity. We have employed molecular modeling (MM) based selection methodology to arrive at the most suitable solvent?dispersant combination for preparation of the given metal oxide nano-particles. Molecular modeling techniques are employed to compute the interaction energy of a given dispersant with surface of the metal oxide particles in the presence of the dispersion medium. The interaction energy helps identify a dispersant that has strong affinity for the metal oxide surfaces allowing for strong dispersant adsorption and hence a more stable dispersion. For example, in case of aqueous nano-titania suspensions, poly-carboxylic acids like citric acid provide better dispersion than mono-carboxylic acids like lauric acid, mysristic acid, and oleic acid. While in non-aqueous medium like ethanol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and glycerol trioleate perform better. The suspension is produced in-situ by ultra-fine grinding of the metal oxide powder in the presence of the selected dispersant and dispersion medium in a planetary ball mill. By careful selection of various process parameters such as percent loading of powder, jar filling, grinding media to powder ratio, time and amount of dispersant addition, both aqueous and non-aqueous suspensions of metal oxide nano-particles with average particle size less than 100 nm are produced. The aqueous suspensions of alumina and titania produced in presence of citric acid dispersant exhibit median particle size of 83 and 62 nm, respectively. These suspensions have been found to be stable for nearly 3 years. The nano-particles thus produced are used in the preparation of nano-fluids?advance heat transfer liquids, which show enhanced heat transfer capabilities and unaltered stability and performance even after several heating-cooling cycles. The nano-particles are also utilized for making efficient photo catalysts, which are found to be highly effective under sunlight. "Rapid depletion of high grade iron ores coupled with the increasing demand for the blast furnace grade iron ore in recent times has shifted the research focus on the development of appropriate technologies for the utilization of low - grade alumina rich iron ore slimes. These slimes are currently being dumped into tailing ponds owing to their high alumina content. Typical constituent minerals present in the Indian iron ore slimes are hematite, goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite. Considering the fine particle size distribution (<37 microns) in the slimes, selective dispersion-flocculation seems to be one of the most appropriate process which has been explored by us. We present our successful results on a natural iron ore slime sample obtained from one of the mines in India. We have been able to achieve a concentrate assaying >67% Fe, and <3% Al2O3 and 2.8% loss on ignition (LOI) from the slime sample assaying 60.4% Fe, 7.7% Al2O3 and 5.45% LOI with an Fe recovery of 62-69% simply by adjusting the pulp pH. We have scaled up the process to a semi batch scale as a prelude to commercialize it for the beneficiation of low grade iron ore slimes."

"Since the 1970?s we have seen a marked corporate response in terms of the environment. In part this has come from regulation but it has largely come from stakeholders and the community. Rising expectations have in general been met. We now see a similar trend towards sustainability. At the same time, the importance of mining to the share market has decreased drastically and with that decrease has come the requirement for the mining sector to show returns similar in manner to other sectors. While rationalisation can achieve some progress towards these goals, the long-term requirement is for innovation, as it always has been. This paper looks to the logical goal of innovation within a sustainable mining framework and targets the removal of the desired metal values with minimal environmental footprint. It is suggested that broad ranging alliances will be necessary, particularly amongst the R&D suppliers, to achieve this goal. Industry will need to take an active role given the recent global restructuring.THE MARCH TO SUSTAINABILITYSince the 1970?s there has been an increasing corporate response on environmental matters. We have moved from matters environmental being issues relevant only to minority groups through a series of attitudinal changes by management. Whilst there have always been examples of excellent environmental performance, for many in the 70?s spending money on improving the environment beyond some minimal level was seen as a distraction from production or treated in a similar way to donations to the community. There is little of that attitude these days, as most mining companies have long since regarded the environment as a core business direction. Indeed, for some years one could note an escalation in matters of environmental reporting to the extent that the environmental performance of companies is now very public. In some cases, NGOs have even been invited to help certify and audit the reporting standards. Similarly with health & safety.There is now a rising expectation on the part of the community that social matters will also be given the same level of support as health, safety and the environment. This time around it would appear that the mining industry is at the leading edge of sustainability. The Global Mining Initiative (Global Mining, 2002) and the contributions to the Rio World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio +10, 2002) suggest that sustainability is being taken very seriously by the mining industry. For sustainability it is convenient to use the Brundtland (1987) definition. This definition has widespread acceptance with governments, industry, environmental groups, financial institutions and individuals as a direction against which our activities and plans can be measured."

The paper reports results on sinterability of iron ores from the mines of Tata Steel Limited. The objective was to improve tumbler index (TI) of sinter and its reduction parameters, reduction degradation index (RDI) and reducibility (RI) while maintaining strand productivity same or to improve. Pot sintering experiments were carried out with Joda and Noamundi mines having LOI 3.8% and 2.9% respectively. Sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) was varied in the 2.1 to 2.5 range and its MgO content was kept in the 1.4% to 1.8% range according to the blast furnace requirement. The ignition condition and vacuum was maintained according to the plant practice. The effect of variables namely, granulometric composition of ores vis-à-vis that of sinter mix, bed height, solid fuel, moisture content of green mix on the sintering indices was studied. The productivity with Noamundi ore (26 %+6.3 mm) was lower than that with Joda ore (45% +6.3 mm) at 4% coke in the mix and sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) 2.1. However, with 4% coke (ash 22%) the RDI value was significantly high in case of Noamundi Ore, which decreased significantly to 29% with 5% coke. The size parameter of ore fines and its LOI content do influence the sintering speed and the sinter properties significantly. At 2.1 basicity ratio, the sinter with the Joda ore having coarsergranulometry had highest TI (=70.2%). The RDI (27%) in this case was inferior to that (23.2%) when Joda ores with finer size was sintered. Better RDI with finer sized ore could be attributed to better assimilation of CaO/ MgO with more balanced and uniformly distributed hematite minerals. The size parameter has been inter-influenced by the coke requirement. With the lower mean sized Joda ore the sinter RDI decreased significantly to 23% and the productivity improved to 42.9 T/(sq m*d) when the coke in the mix increased from 4% to 5%. An attempt to reduce the coke in the mix from 5% to 4% with respect to both the ores was not successful as it resulted higher RDI and lower strand productivity. The present study has revealed that sinter RDI improves (decreases) with decrease in the sintering time, while such correlation was absent between TI of sinter and speed of sintering. Corollary to this observation, one can take advantage of other stronger parameters to increase the sintering speed (and hence sinter productivity) without affecting the sinter strength. In the present study higher FeO sinters has displayed excellent RDI, however cold strength of sinter was not correlated with its FeO content. "Gold solubilised during cyanidation can be recovered by precipitation (Merrill-Crow process) or by adsorption onto activated carbon, these being the techniques applied in industrial plants.Precious metals (Au, Ag) adsorbed onto activated carbon are extracted during a subsequent stage in aqueous phase, by various technologies, such as hot elution (70-80°C) or under pression desorption (100-130°), with hydro-alcoholic solutions.This stage is of great interest from an economic point of view, due to the high energy costs. Temperature represents the critical kinetic factor.The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different water/organic solvent mixtures (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) on the desorption process.The experimental work was carried out on laboratory scale, using activated coconut carbon with different temperatures and extraction times, without adding cyanide.Best results have been obtained in this order: isopropyl alcohol > ethylene glycol > ethanol. Starting from gold concentration of about 5 g Au per kg of carbon, best kinetics resulted in 97-100% of gold extraction, after 8 hours of desorption, at a temperature of 80ºC."

In order to raise the utilization rate of phosphate resource of Al-Jalamid Mine in Saudi Arabia, a flotation experiment for its phosphate rock was carried out by using WF-01collector that have been produced by Wengfu Phosphate Mine. The results showed that WF-01 collector had extensive adaptability for Al-Jalamid phosphate rock, and the grade of phosphate concentrate could be up to 33% P2O5 mixing the upper, middle and lower beds rock as well as its 80% more recovery.

"Crushing and grinding are the prerequisite processes in many industries, such as minerals processing and powder technology. During crushing and grinding, minerals will cleave or fracture along the directions by broken the interlayer bonds (e.g., ionic bonds), generating some commonly exposed surfaces. The broken (or dangling) bonds at the generated surface makes the surface more active and determine the reactivity of the surface. In this work, the population of broken (or dangling) bonds on commonly exposed surfaces of fluorite mineral (a chosen model mineral) was calculated. Based on the calculated broken bonds information, the anisotropic surface reactivity of fluorite such as surface energy, surface relaxation, dissolution, wettability, surface charge and adsorbability, were discussed. The results show that the surface broken bonds density, which is positively related to the surface energy, can be used to predict the cleavage nature, surface relaxation degree and surface stability of fluorite crystal. The distribution characteristic and the number of broken (or unsaturated) bonds of surface active atoms (like Ca for fluorite crystal) can be used to predict and explain the anisotropic wettability, surface charge and adsorption mode and strength of organic molecules on different commonly exposed surfaces. It is easy to conclude that the calculation of surface broken bonds can serve as a fast and accurate way to start the mineral chemistry studies. These findings will be helpful to the mineral/material chemistry research in related interfacial science communities.INTRODUCTIONGrinding for mineral liberation is a prerequisite for a successful flotation separation. Also grinding for size reduction is a prior process for a favorable powder technology. During the grinding process, the minerals / materials will cleave and fracture along certain crystal directions with relatively weak interlayer chemical bonds1 to form a number of common exposed surfaces. Exposed surfaces are the outer boundary of a solid substance. In the mineral / material block, the bonding orbital of the atoms is filled with electrons and the atoms are in a steady state. Atoms on these exposed surfaces appear to show dangling bonds (or broken bonds) by losing chemical bonds to adjacent atoms in the previous block. Therefore, surface broken bonds serves as an initial property of a fresh surface. The lattice arrangement and crystal orientations causes differences in the number of dangling bonds on each exposed surface, i.e., anisotropic surface broken bonds2. The anisotropic dangling bonds enable the exposed surfaces to show varying degrees of surface reactivity (including surface energy, surface charge, surface relaxation, dissolution, wettability and adsorption behavior), known as anisotropic surface reactivity."

PET/kaolin nanocomposites were prepared with melt blending and the structure of the composites was characterized through IR techniques. The results showed that there is stable chemical bonding between PET and kaolin. In addition, the dispersion condition of nanokaolin was observed by means of SEM and TEM. As a result, the thickness of the dispersed nanokaolin particles in PET matrix is mainly from 20mm to 200nm, and the nanosized particles congregate to some extent in the samples. In addition, it was found the kaolin particles almost homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix, without preferential orientation because of the shear effect due to melt blending. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PET/kaolin nanocomposites are dependent on the modification efficiency of nanokaolin. With the poor efficiency, the nanokaolin particles tend to aggregate at a high content and have a bad interfacial compability between nanokaolin and PET matrix, which lead to stress concentration, so the mechanical property descends. Experiments of different contents of modified nanokalin indicated that the intensity of PET/kaolin nanocomposites decreased firstly, then increased, and then decreased, with the nanokaolin content of 4 to 5 percent, the rupture stress of the composites showed a maximum value, which was higher than that of pure PET. On one hand, nanokaolin decreases the function among PET macromolecules, which will decline the mechanical properties, on the other hand, the piece structure of kaolinite improves the intensity of the nanocomposite. When the nanokaolin content is low, the former has the dominant effect on mechanical property, while the latter will play a leading role with the content increasing. But if the nanokaolin content still increases, the agglomeration and stress concentration will be obvious.

In recent years, there is an increasing demand on manganese consumption which stems from the important role of manganese in carbon steel production. And the growing need for manganese ores makes the beneficiation of low-grade manganese ores more economical. In this study, the characterization and beneficiation studies were carried out to propose a flow sheet for typical low-grade Turkish manganese ores. For this aim, different gravity separation methods were applied. According to the mineralogical analysis, the major mineral phases are pyrolusite (MnO2) and psilomelane (MnO2) while the major gangue mineral is radiolarite. Gravity separation tests were accomplished by using jigs, shaking table, MGS (Multi Gravity Separator) and in order to obtain products with high Mn ratio, high intensity magnetic separation was also performed. As a result, different combinations of flow sheets were utilized and a concentrate assaying 56.5% Mn with 85 % recovery was obtained.

In this paper, numerical simulation of magnetite, medium segregation and coal partitioning have been made in a 350 mm diameter cyclone. An attempt is made to assess the nature of impairment in efficiency in relation to the increasing amount of near gravity materials in coal. The CFD model approaches the Algebraic Mixture (ASM) model with the granular option and Reynolds stress model (RSM) to resolve the air core and turbulent mixing of the medium and coal particles. The partition characteristics of the DMC were modelled using both Lagrangian & Eulerian particle tracking for particles ranging in size from 0.5 to 8 mm and in density from 1200 to 2000 kg.m-3. Lagrangian frame work based Discrete Phase model used to simulate the coal particle trajectories inside the DMC and attempted to understand the residence time of different size and density coal particles. It was observed that coal particles having density near to separation-density (having fifty percent of probability to under flow and overflow) are exhibiting increased residence time than any density particles. As expected the smaller size coal particles shows higher residence time than the coarse coal particles. CFD simulations on effect of NGM mass fraction are simulated and analyzed using ASM model including for coal and magnetite. Coal particles with high NGM content show significant effect in misplacement of coal particles towards wrong products at all relative densities. The residence time of the particles increases because of its increased interaction with near dense particles. The effect of NGM fraction on overall cyclone performance as well as detailed flow assessment in terms of residence time distribution, NGM particle concentration profiles with respect to LZVV is presented.

Joda East Iron Mine, one of the captive iron ore sources of Tata steel, located in the state of Odisha in eastern India caters to approximately 45% of the iron ore requirement of the Jamshedpur Steel Plant. The iron ore occurring in the mine having high in iron content along with high in alumina. Clay and gibbsite are the predominant mineral phases present as surface coating, fracture filling and/or free occurring and are responsible for alumina content higher. Alumina in iron ore impacts the techno-economic performance of a steel plant by impacting sintering and blast furnace productivity. The impact is even higher when it comes to fine ore used in the blast furnaces in the form of sinter as it constitutes a major portion of the blast furnace burden. Therefore, it is beneficial to upgrade iron ore in the mine head and to reduce alumina before it is subjected to agglomeration. Mineralogical test works reveal, that alumina in iron fines is mainly associated with the clay attached to the hematite particles, either free or interlocked to a very fine size. The paper describes the efforts made to reduce alumina in the iron fines in Joda East processing plant, without much of capital investment for a very sophisticated fines beneficiation circuit. In this process, a suitable dispersant was added in the plant that dispersed the masked slime coating over the iron ore fines, thereby making a better quality iron ore fines with reduced alumina content. The alumina in fines improved by 0.2 units? means from a label of 2.4-2.6 % reduced to 2.2-2.4 %. With this initiative, not only the primary objective of alumina reduction is met but also it has given substantial benefit in reduction of silica and as well as moisture in product. This moisture reduction also has given bottom line impact by reducing idle freight and royalty.

The stability of foams and froth plays an important role in flotation, in which small amounts of relatively weak non-ionic surfactants (frothers) are used to produce air bubbles and foams. In the present work, factors affecting the stability of the foams produced in the presence of common frothers, such as n-pentanol, n-octanol, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG), have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Schelud-ko-Exerowa type to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses. The results were used to determine the contributions from the various surface forces to the disjoining pressures in the thin lamellae (foam) films formed between air bubbles. In addition, we used a model developed by Wang and Yoon (Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochem. Eng. Aspects, 2006) to calculate the elasticities of the lamellae films at the critical thicknesses at which films rupture. The surface forces and elasticity da-ta were then compared with the foam stabilities in the presence of the various flotation frothers. It was found that foam stabilities are controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces, the relative contributions of which change with frother type and concentration. In general, surface forces play a more important role at relatively low frother concentrations, while elasticity plays a more important role at higher concentrations. At the frother additions usually employed in the mining industry, MIBC relies on surface forces while PPG-400 relies on film elasticity in producing stable foams. The former is capable of dampening the hydrophobic force, which is a major attractive force destabilizing lamellae films, while the latter is capable of reducing surface tensions at low concentrations.

Mining operations offer many opportunities for the use of IT and communication technologies to improve automation and thereby deliver higher levels of productivity, cost, quality and safety. In this paper, we discuss a particular application, namely, building a fully automated train control and operation system within a mining area. We first outline the basic architecture and functionality of such a system and then present a real-life case study where the railway system within a remote iron ore mine in Canada was converted to a fully automated train operation system. This hard real-time safety-critical system required the use of advanced technologies such as embedded systems (e.g., on-board train controller), radio communications, formal methods, optimal scheduling, and extensive simulations. We focus on the design aspects for maintaining the system in safe states.

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. Sarband andalusite deposit is located in Markazi province in Iran. Mineralogical studies showed that the main minerals of this sample are andalusite (5%~10 %), mica, quartz and feldspar. Processing of the samples was carried out using two sizes, i.e. +500 µm and -500 µm. In the processing of +500 µm scrabble test was carried out on -4750 +500 µm and -2380 +500 µm. For -500+300 µm shaking table and magnetic separation were applied. For -300 µm fraction, flotation was carried out. The results of this tests showed that the processing of Shazand andalusite was not possible, because silica and iron impurities were diffused inside the andalusite mineral grains.

"Dry coal dressing was popular during the 1950.s and 60.s in many parts of the world. The devices mainly used were air jigs and air tables.The increase in ash and moisture content of run-of-mine coals due to the wide advanced mechanisation of mining mechanisation during and after this period led to that pneumatic devices being unable to treat run-of-mine coals with the desired efficiency. Since the 1960.s almost all new coal preparation plants have been based on wet processes that are highly efficient in terms of coal recovery and their ability to handle damp and sticky run-of-mine coals. (Frankland, 1995)However, water is becoming increasingly costly and the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern. There would be significant cost savings and a lower total energy consumption if coal could be cleaned dry. Efficient dry coal treatment would be an interesting solution in desert, arid or cold areas.In Germany one dry coal dressing plant is in operation. The process and the advantages and disadvantages are presented below.Further on new developments in the field of dry density separation of coal are reviewed and analysed. Test results of new dry coal separation methods e.g. new developed air jig and magnetic separator are reported."
