THE modern coal cutter is a highly developed, and to a certain extent a somewhat complicated, machine. The requisite power to cope with conditions as found must be generated by the motor with due regard to limitations in the matter of dimensions and weight. This imposes the necessity of relatively high speeds of rotation. Any factor external to the machine proper which tends to reduce the load on the motor and gearing is most important. Experience has proved that close attention to the question of cutter-chain details undoubtedly results, in practically every coal-cutting operation, in increased efficiency and reduction of power and maintenance costs. The chain is the unit of the coal cutter which most greatly affects the economical operation of the machine, and only by due consideration of conditions and by the proper selection of the right chain can best results be expected; also, intelligent care of the chain while in operation is essential if it is to give its best service. The chain is the part of the machine that carries the pick boxes or blocks, which are connected to each other by a pair of chain links. The power to drive the chain is trans-mitted by a sprocket. The chain runs in guides supported by a rigid member called a 'jib'. Figure 1 shows the various parts mentioned. The first requirement of a chain is that it cut the coal as fast as possible. The second is that it do so economically. Economy of cutting can conveniently be divided as follows: (1) Economy in power used. (2) Economy in pick life. (3) Economy ' in chain life. ( 4) Economy in jib life. (5) Economy in labour for maintenance.

A thermohydrodynamic computer code has been used to simulate dust explosions. For sulphide dusts, the thermodynamic predictions are used to investigate the effect of dust concentration, mineral content and inert materials as well as the quantity of sulphur dioxide produced. It was found that the amount of oxygen available for the explosion is very important and that the dust concentration which gives maximum explosion pressures is obtained at zero or slightly negative oxygen balance values. The sulphide minerals were found to have the following explosibility sequence: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, covellite, chalcocite and galena, which is in agreement with mine experience. The results show that theoretical calculations can be used to predict explosion pressures and toxic gases produced by a dust explosion and therefore they can assist in the design of protective measures .

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

THE Great War forced the peoples of the world to recognize the importance of the wise development and use of the world's natural resources. Not the least, and perhaps the most, important, is the world's fuel supply- solid, liquid, and gaseous. Without fuel our civilization would be impossible, and mankind would of necessity have to congregate in the torrid zones of the earth's surface for at least six months of every year. Of the three classes of fuels the solid ones are the most plentiful, as well as being the most widely distributed, since few countries are entirely devoid of solid fuels of one kind or another. Until a hundred years ago wood was the fuel most generally used in this country, but since then coal has supplanted wood as a fuel in all its uses, except in the outlying districts and among the farming communities. For many years the supply of coal was thought to be unlimited, but as years went by more thought and study were given to the world's coal resources, until today not only are the limits known, but in one instance at least their depletion is predicted to be almost within the age of living men, unless more provident methods are put into practice for their winning and utilization.

Introduction The Corbin coalfield is one of the smallest, and at the same time one of the principal, producing bituminous-coal areas in southeastern British Columbia, and is unique on account of the great original thickness of one of its coal seams and the remarkable concentration of coal in a small area that has occurred through intense folding and faulting of the measures. These are such that the deposit has been referred to at times as "the world's thickest coal seam" and as" a mountain of coal." The determination of the number, thickness, and character of the seams present, and the structure, extent, and geological relationship of the several deposits, are of vital interest both to the operating company in its endeavour to evolve the most efficient method of mining these exceptionally thick deposits and to the Government in estimating the coal resources of the different fields. With the object of ascertaining these data the writer was assigned in 1930 to geologically map and study the Corbin coal deposit. A topographic map covering Coal mountain and the immediate vicinity on a scale of 1 inch =800 feet, with a contour interval of 25 feet, made by the Topographic Division of the Geological Survey, served as the base for the geological mapping.

The Outotec nickel matte chloride leaching process is especially suitable for small capacity standalone nickel refineries. The matte is leached with hydrochloric acid and oxygen in multiple steps in atmospheric OKTOP® reactors. Oxygen feed prevents reductive conditions and hydrogen formation in the leaching process. A sufficiently high acid concentration keeps the iron dissolved in the solution. The iron is removed after leaching by precipitation and the pregnant leach solution continues to metals recovery. The metals recovery from the chloride solution is done by solvent extractions, where ammonia is used for pH control. Copper and nickel are stripped from the organic phases into sulphate solutions. Metals can be recovered from the purified solution by conventional electrowinning. Other alternatives are precipitation or hydrogen reduction processes. The ammonium chloride in the solvent extraction raffinate is regenerated into ammonia. The calcium chloride solution from ammonia regeneration is routed to acid regeneration where sulphuric acid is added and ultra-pure gypsum is precipitated. THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company's underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

Abstract-Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and reflects infiltrative fluid flow, wallrock reaction, temperature variations, and fluid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonation usually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knife sharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although, visually striking and scientifically interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations are less useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonation pattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14 well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarn or other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wallrocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gossan in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to garnet, to pyroxene, to massive-sulfide replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal locations. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet:pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation patterns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is commonly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, reflecting particularly reducing wallrocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcic garnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisen stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite. Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wallrocks. Goldrich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa- Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with significant zones of massive sulfides within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wallrocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and metasomatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. Men sank a shaft in a ‘gum bed' in southwestern Ontario's Lambton county, not far from Petroilia, and distilled from the gum a burning oil That was just a hundred years ago. The gum was originally liquid petroleum which had seeped to the surface and lost most of its volatile components.Later, the miners dug down to •bed-rock and soon after they were not digging but were drilling wells, as they have been ever since. From the wells they obtained erode oil.What is crude oil? It is not an element like gold, silver or lead, •but a complex mixture of compounds. These compounds are made basically from two elements, carbon and hydrogen, and are called hydrocarbons (Figure 1).The remarkable ability of these. "Characterizing the spatial distribution of rock stresses is a challenge, especially in the geologically complex environments typically found at most metalliferous mines. Therefore, instead of focusing, specifically, on the task of making stress measurements, the engineer should instead attempt to develop a better understanding of the interaction between stress, mining geometry and rock mass behaviour. This paper demonstrates such an approach using a Canadian Shield hardrock mine case study, in which geomechanical models are used to relate stress, mining geometry, and rock mass properties to observed excavation response, and numerical modelling is used to better quantify this interaction.IntroductionUnderstanding how the mine geometry, field stresses and rock mass interact to produce the observed rock mass response to mining can be a significant challenge. Consider our present ability to quantify the basic geomechanical design input data. Mine geometry is normally quantified in more detail than is required for analysis purposes. Our understanding of rock mass strength and stiffness is far from complete, but established procedures do exist to obtain estimates of these parameters based on index and laboratory testing data and field mapping. Our ability to quantify field stresses is probably the most limited, in part because stress measurements are difficult and expensive to carry out, and in part because the stresses vary to an unknown degree from point to point within the rock mass. The engineer must, therefore, consider whether or not stress measurements are justified and, when they are, where the average stress state needs to be quantified and how many of which type of measurements will be required to determine the average stresses.Such was the case at Ansil mine, a massive sulphide deposit in hard rock located at a depth of more than one kilometre in the northern Québec portion of the Canadian Shield. The Ansil orebody was relatively rich, but small, with the potential for significant stress-related problems. As a result, geomechanical design had to be done carefully from the start – there would be little opportunity to modify the mining strategy once production had begun, and the economic consequences of stope dilution and rock mass instability would be severe. An extensive stress measurement campaign was carried out, but the determined stress magnitudes were unexpectedly low. The designers were, therefore, faced with a dilemma:"

A novel synthesis is described for the preparation of supported gold catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation. The novel route is a variation of the inverse co-precipitation method and requires amphoteric metal hydroxides, with zinc and aluminium hydroxides chosen. Catalysts were prepared by inverse co-precipitation (ICPa) and by the novel route (ICPb) and tested for CO oxidation at 60ºC. Preliminary results showed the novel route to be superior to ICPa; the catalysts prepared by ICPb showed higher catalytic activities. The effect on catalytic activity of parameters such as pH, calcination temperature, washing of precursor and calcined catalysts and ageing was investigated. A preparation pH of 9 and a Zn to Al mass ratio of 3 proved to be optimal. It was possible to remove residual chloride by washing thereby enhancing catalyst performance. Ageing and Mg citrate addition were also shown to improve catalyst performance. Characterization of the catalysts revealed that better activities were obtained when the support was more crystalline and had a higher surface area. The presence of carbonate-containing species in the support decreased catalytic activity. 197Au Mössbauer Spectroscopy revealed the presence of Au3+ when catalysts were heat-treated at temperatures of 200ºC and below. Catalysts calcined at 400º had 75% of the gold present as Au0, with the remaining gold present as Au3+.

Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting&apos;s Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

"The comminution circuit at Barrick Cortez Gold Mine uses an open circuit primary jaw crusher followed by a standard SABC grinding circuit. The grinding circuit incorporates a 26’Ø x 11’ SAG mill, an Omnicone 1560 pebble crusher and a 16’Ø x 28½’ ball mill. Both mills are driven by 4500 HP motors.In 2007, several comminution circuit studies were performed to assess circuit performance and map a course for improvement. This paper discusses the results of those studies including an analysis of mine-to-mill opportunities, grinding work index efficiency, and ball mill functional performance. Subsequently, improvements to the circuit were made to enhance operating efficiency. Specifically, improvements to the pebble crusher liner configuration, advanced process control system (expert system) and ball mill classification and ball charge are discussed. In addition, other current and future improvement opportunities are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Cortez property is expanding to include the new Cortez Hills open pit and underground mines. Ore from these new mines will be processed in the existing Pipeline mill facility. In conjunction with ore characterization work, performance of the comminution circuit needed to be quantified. Thus, in 2007, the comminution circuit was surveyed and opportunities for improvement identified.Figure 1 below shows the Pipeline mill flowsheet. It is a standard SABC grinding circuit using an open circuit primary jaw crusher followed by a 26’Ø x 11’ (7.92m Ø x 3.35m) SAG mill, in closed circuit with a Omnicone 1,560 pebble crusher, and a 16’Ø x 28½’ (4.88m Ø x 8.69m) ball mill. Both mills are driven by 4,500 HP (3,357 kW) motors. The SAG discharge screen aperture is 5/16” (8 mm) x 1-1/16” (27 mm) slots. Ball mill circuit classification is done with Krebs D20B cyclones."

Glacial lake sediments or glaciolacustrine deposits form a significant portion of the Canadian, Scandinavian and Russian landscapes. Furthermore, 50 per cent of the Archean volcanic belts within the Canadian Shield area are covered wholly or in part by these deposits. Because of the high electrical conductivity and low hydraulic conductivity of these compact sediments, the application of geophysical (electrical) and geochemical techniques in such areas becomes a difficult task. The presence of these sediments has therefore hampered exploration for metallic sulphide deposits in some of the most important metallogenic environments of Canada. Similar problems exist in some tropical countries, such as Australia, where the overburden may be very conductive. In this paper, the extent and provenance of the glaciolacustrine deposits within the Canadian Shield are described. The geochemical and geophysical factors that hinder exploration in the clay belts are reviewed, with case histories of successful and unsuccessful applications of some of these techniques. The most successful geochemical technique used within glacial clay belts is the sampling of lodgement till beneath the clay cover, and the analysis of the heavy mineral fraction of that till. Surficial sampling has not been successfully applied. Some geophysical techniques, more specifically electromagnetic and magnetic induced-polarization techniques, have detected mineralization beneath substantially deep clay or saline overburden layers. Some suggestions have been made, such as the use of anions in hydrogeochemical surveys and the use of wide-band multi-frequency EM systems. When implemented, they will hopefully make the current geochemical and geophysical methods more effective in exploration for base metal sulphides within clay-covered terrains.

As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

The orebodies of the Giant Yellow-knife mine occur in zones of schist, in an assemblage of typical Precambrian greenstones which form part of the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. One of the most interesting problems at the mine concerns the fold-like attitudes assumed by the schist zones. The internal structure of the zones and orebodies provides much evidence of folding. A logical conclusion would be that the zones represent a single horizon which has been folded and drag-folded in the ordinary course of mountain building. However, surface mapping, and correlation of certain marker horizons, in underground work, indicate a homo-clinal succession of steeply dipping flows. If this concept of the geology is correct, the zones must cross-cut the regional strike at a small angle and, in the over-all aspect, the regional dip at a large angle. A mechanical interpretation of the zone structure is presented as a suggestion for the present until new evidence is found.
