The CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practice Guidelines (MRMR Best Practice Guidelines) were prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's (CIM) Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) to update an earlier version that was accepted by CIM Council on November 23, 2003 (CIM, 2003). These 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines supersede and replace the November 23, 2003 version of the MRMR Guidelines. These 2019 MRMR Guidelines are not intended to be prescriptive and are not intended to provide detailed and exhaustive instructions for preparation of Mineral Resource and/or Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates. Rather, they are intended as general guidance to assist professional geoscientists (or equivalent) and engineers (or equivalent) in preparing high quality estimates of MRMR that incorporate sound geoscientific, engineering, evaluation and design practices. They are based on well-established estimation and mine planning principles and are designed to provide general guidelines of best professional practices employed in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Although the 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines are intended for use by Canadian-based mining/exploration practitioners, many of the concepts and practices presented herein are in general agreement with current industry practices in jurisdictions with membership in the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). For this document, persons preparing MRMR estimates are called Practitioners. Preparation of MRMR estimates should be carried out by Practitioners who either hold the status of Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent), or who prepare the estimates under the supervision of a Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent). For the purposes of this document, all references to reporting describe such necessary reports and related documentation that are created as part of the normal-course work flow of preparing MRMR estimates for internal purposes. For clarity, all public disclosure of MRMR estimates made by, or on behalf of, an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time. At least one Qualified Person (QP) must take responsibility for each part of the estimation process when publicly disclosing the results of MRMR estimates. The intended audience for these 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines includes Practitioners at all levels of skill and experience, government agencies, academic institutions, and the public.

The prominence of her mineral resources makes Canada a most fitting place in which to hold the Second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, since in all probability the Dominion has more diversified mineral wealth than any other part of the British Empire. This paper is concerned with nickel, an important factor of Canada's mineral production. The richness and quantity of her nickel ores have made Canada the world's most important source of supply of the metal. Its history and diversified uses are, therefore, particularly interesting at this meeting. Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archaeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old, in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron.

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

This paper details the work of RISKGATE, the largest Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety initiative to date. The program is an interactive online risk management system developed to maximize health and safety performance in the coal mining industry by implementing continuous improvement in managing major unwanted events. The comprehensive knowledge base covers tires, collisions, fires, isolation, strata control underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks, and slips/trips/falls. All major Australian coal mining companies contributed topic experts to this broad industry initiative: nine coal mining companies, more than 80 experts, and more than 400 days of individual time for knowledge-capture workshops.

"Trials of automated technology at underground mine sites around the world have reported increased production and the potential for lower energy consumption. Autonomous mining eliminates a range of delays related to operator downtime and travel to the workface and facilitates continuous operation in conditions that are unsafe for workers. Automation also introduces complexities and safety hazards arising from equipment–personnel interactions; automated processes must be isolated from other stope-cycle–related activities such as production drilling, development, loading, and backfilling, poten¬tially requiring changes to the mine design to maintain an efficient and safe operation. In general, this covers the period 1940-1958 and is merely representative of what is available. Numbers in •brackets refer to items in the bibliography.It may be desirable at the outset to give a few definitions covering those terms directly related to this subject. The following is a definition of permanent-mold casting as given by J. W. Meier in a paper, ""The Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys"", read before the Ottawa Valley Chapt.er of the American Society for Metals:""Permanent Mold Casting is used where a large number of castings of the same part are required and higher mechanical properties, greater density and closer tolerances are essential. Since metallic mold s are very expensive, the number of castings must be sufficient to, defray, at least partially, the added expense. Molds are usually made from a good quality cast iron, 1but other mold materials, such as the aluminum and copper alloys, graphite, ceramics, etc., are being used in certain cases. Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) is a high volume low concentration methane source. The capture or use of methane from VAM is challenging, which results in the routine discharge of methane into the atmosphere. Mitigating VAM has the benefits of providing an energy source and reducing the atmospheric Greenhouse Gas (GHG) burden. The GHG radiative forcing effect of methane is 17?23 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 100-year time horizon. Thus, any reduction in atmospheric methane would be beneficial. The calorific value of methane is 55.5 MJ/Kg; therefore, a 100 m3/s flow with VAM concentrations from 0.1?1% can provide 3.8?38 MW of exploitable power. Strategies to mitigate VAM such as: Thermal Flow Reverse Reactors (TFRR), Catalytic Flow Reverse Reactors (CFRR), Lean Burn and Catalytic Gas Turbines, Biothermica Vamox®, Megtec VOCSIDIZER©, and Vamcat? are briefly reviewed. The review of VAM mitigation technologies reveals disadvantages such as the need to maintain a minimum internal heat capable of oxidizing the methane. This requirement uses all of the available methane up to the point of reaction sustainability and up to half at the highest methane concentration in VAM. Some systems may introduce a pressure drop to the ventilation system, which would impinge on the existing ventilation system design. These impediments necessitate the development of a more amenable technology. In the proposed system, gas turbines (GT), coupled to a combustion chamber with an external fuel supply, assist the combustion of the VAM. The combustion-chamber coupled system provides electricity, while the heat contained in the GT exhaust gases increases the temperature of the VAM, encouraging the development of a flame inside a combustion chamber. The flow from the combustion chamber streams through a primary air/fluid heat exchanger capable of producing steam of a high enough quality to generate electricity using conventional steam turbines. The residual heat after primary extraction, directed through other equipment, provides additional heat based products such as industrial scale dry air, chilling by an absorption chiller or hot water. The overall design of the system is scalable for low to high VAM flows or variations in concentrations and is capable of providing the company or community with heating, chilling, hot water, electricity or motive force as needed by the particular site or community. The Multi-generation system uses heat from three sources to provide clean efficient energy while mitigating the atmospheric emissions of methane. These sources are heat from the GT, often considered waste heat, heat from fuel injected into the igniters and heat from the VAM. The opportunity to collect carbon credits may improve the economics. In order to design a system with this capacity, a detailed analysis of the combustion characteristics of three separate flows is required. VAM is the main airflow, having the highest volumetric effect, while the GT exhaust and the additional fuel added to the hot exhaust flow of the gas turbine are lower flows, but have a higher velocity and temperature. The aim of the modeling undertaken in this work is to establish the combustion dynamics, degree of pre-heating required and the geometry essential to the design of combustion based VAM mitigation multi-generation systems.

The largest known platinum group metal (PGM) deposit in the world is the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe also being one of the biggest. It is therefore not surprising that the majority (just over 5 million troy ounces or 156 metric tons per annum) of the world's platinum is produced in Southern Africa. Primary smelting of ore concentrates is carried out in that region by five companies, namely Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum, Lonmin Platinum, Northam Platinum, all of South Africa, and Makwiro Platinum in Zimbabwe. The only other primary smelter of platinum group metals is Stillwater Mining of Montana, USA, although very significant quantities of PGMs are produced as co-products by Norilsk Nickel of Russia. Smaller (but still significant) quantities of PGMs are produced by Falconbridge and Inco of Canada, also as co-products from nickel sulphide smelting. There are many similarities between PGM smelting and nickel sulphide smelting, and the range of technologies in use includes six-in-line rectangular electric furnaces, three-electrode circular AC furnaces, Peirce-Smith converters, and Anglo's ACP (based on Ausmelt technology). PGMs are also recovered from residue materials using DC arc furnace technology.

Brass, a deliberate alloy of copper and zinc, has been known since before Roman times. There are two main methods of making brass: (1) Cementation or calamine process - crushed zinc ore (calamine, ZnC03 , or calcined calamine, ZnO), is mixed with charcoal and small pieces of metallic copper and heated to about 900°C in a closed crucible, (2) Alloying - metallic copper and zinc are melted together in a reverberatory furnace. According to most modern authorities (e.g. Smith and Forbes 1955), the calamine process was the only one used in western Europe prior to the 18th century. At that time, the alloying technique began to take over, because metallic zinc was successfully produced on a large scale for the first time. Previously, this had been a problem because zinc vapourizes at 906°C or about the same temperature at which it can be reduced from its ore. Thus, some means had to be devised to collect and condense the zinc vapour (Tylecote 1976). Metallic zinc was known, however, earlier than the 18th century A.O. Several early finds have been made, including a rolled sheet of metallic zinc found in excavations at the Athens Agora dating to the 3rd to 2nd century B. C. (Farnsworth et al. 1949). The Chinese were producing zinc by at least the 10th century A. D. and, by the 17th century, Chinese zinc ingots were being imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company (Needham 1974). Metallic zinc is also mentioned in several European documentary sources from the 16th century (e.g. Paracelsus, Agricola). This study traces the changes in Western brass making methods from Classical to Renaissance times by examining documentary and archaeological evidence.

PJV Dome Mine has used some form of gravity concentration since start of milling operation in 1909 to recover free milling gold. Amalgamation and conventional jigs were first used and were replaced with the Knelson Concentrators in 1993. The Knelson concentrates produced were upgraded on a conventional shaking table prior to smelting and refining into gold bullion. In May 2002, a comprehensive review of the latest gravity recovery technology led to a piloting campaign aimed at further improving gravity recovery. The Knelson concentrates, subjected to intensive cyanide leaching in an Acacia pilot plant, were found to be amenable to intensive cyanide leaching with over 98% of the gold being dissolved within 24 hours. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was successfully installed and commissioned in December 2002, to replace the shaking table. his paper describes pilot scale testing, installation, commissioning and optimization of the Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor. Also, the economic impacts on down stream processes are highlighted.

It is the purpose of this paper to examine a number of the recent developments in powder metallurgy, being most concerned with those which are yet to prove themselves rather than those which have achieved commercial maturity. Such developments include the production of very much coarser and very much finer powders, down to the near-micron size range. Also considered are activated sintering, direct powder rolling and extrusion (both hot and cold), brazing and welding, hydrides of reactive metals, oxide dispersion strengthened alloys and theoretical evaluations. "Many mentorship programs are available to Canadian mining industry employees. Some are company-led initiatives, whereas others are provided through educational institutions or nonprofit organizations. In 2016, a national survey was launched to gain insight into perceptions of what mentorship is, learn about available programs, and collate experiences with formal and informal mentorship opportunities. This paper outlines survey findings and delivers recommendations to industry for consideration in employee mentorship programs. In addition, mining industry leaders share their mentor/mentee perspectives. The intent of this paper is to bring awareness of best practices that can help employees grow and develop in their profession.RÉSUMÉ Les employés de l’industrie minière canadienne ont accès à de nombreux programmes d’encadrement. Certains sont des initiatives menées par les sociétés, d’autres sont proposées par le biais d’établissements d’enseignement ou d’organismes à but non lucratif. En 2016, une enquête à l’échelle nationale a été lancée en vue d’obtenir des informations quant à la perception de ce qu’est réellement l’encadrement, de découvrir les programmes proposés et de comparer les expériences aux possibilités d’encadrement, officielles ou non. Cet article présente les résultats de cette enquête et fournit des recommandations à l’intention de l’industrie afin qu’elle les prenne en compte dans ses programmes d’encadrement des employés. In 2016, a link to an online mentorship survey was circulated to males and females in the mining industry with the belief that mentorship programs should be available to everyone. The link was delivered via the authors’ personal networks in mining, the CIM Reporter, Women in Mining (WIM) email blasts, LinkedIn, and Facebook. This paper summarizes the answers to the survey questions. The paper is a follow up to one by the same authors (Nyabeze, Espley, & Beneteau, 2010), which was written to gain insight into why women join and stay in the mining industry, and to learn why the overall representation of women is low."

CALCULATING the average grade of a gold deposit is a problem that presents certain unique difficulties. Particularly troublesome is the fact that the average of the samples taken from a deposit is likely to be higher than the grade of the ore that is eventually mined, even when allowance is made for dilution and other factors resulting from the mining operations. It would seem that this situation is due to the presence in the deposits of structural peculiarities which have not been properly taken into account, since estimating the average grade of the broken ore produced from the deposits does not present the same difficulty. It is therefore evident that structural considerations are of prime importance in estimating the grade of a deposit. This fact is clearly realized and taken into account in cases where the boundaries of the orebodies and the variations within them are easily recognized. But in many gold deposits this condition is not satisfied, a circumstance which can be regarded as the main source of difficulty. Lacking definite information concerning the structure, we are apt to use certain procedures which are either empirical or based on general probabilities.

"This is the third in a series of articles about the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). The first article was an interview with Niall Weatherstone, Chairman of CRIRSCO (CIM Magazine, February 2008) the second described the background and goals of CRIRSCO (CIM Magazine, March/April 2008). In 2007, CRIRSCO was adopted as the Reserves and Resources Task Force of the International Council on Mining and Metals. This decision by ICMM has resulted in an increased level of funding for CRIRSCO and the ability to advance its objectives. In mid-October 2007, CRIRSCO members met in London England to discuss the status of each of the member countries’ reporting codes and the progress of various CRIRSCO projects. Update on national reporting codes Australia: The last update of the Australian JORC Code was in 2004. While there are ongoing discussions about issues that arise from the application of the latest version of the Code, there are no plans to update JORC in the near future. Canada: The Canadian Securities Administrators revised National Instrument 43-101 in December 2005. At the same time, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum published updated Resource and Reserve Definitions that are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. CIM is continuing work on developing Best Practice Guidelines to assist practitioners in the estimation of Mineral Resources and Reserves. South Africa: The South African Mineral Reserve Committee is currently awaiting an update of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Limited Listing Rules, which will incorporate both SAMREC and SAMVAL (South African valuation guidelines). The official launch of both codes is expected in 2008. Europe: The Pan-European Reserves Reporting Committee expects to release a consultation draft in 2008. Emphasis is being placed on industrial minerals and aggregates, which constitute a very large industry in Europe. Chile: The Chilean Certification Code was approved in early 2008. As part of the Code, a National Commission is being established to screen and review reports on a random or specific basis. United States: The Society of Mining Engineers updated the SME Reporting Guidelines in 2007. The Securities and Exchange Commission has not accepted these more up-to-date definitions and guidelines. The SME committee will continue to discuss the incorporation of these Reporting Guidelines with SEC. SME has also established a class of membership, a Registered Member, which includes disciplinary measures for non-compliance with the SME guidelines."

Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Within the mining industry, the pathway from exploration, to planning, construction, operation and closure has become more complex over the last few decades. The current financial, environmental and social influences present the mining industry with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In addition, international environmental and social reporting standards and codes are becoming increasingly robust. The reporting requirements provide an added impetus for issuers to effectively manage environmental and social impacts and risks. Reporting requirements also provide the opportunity to be transparent. The intended audience for these Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guidelines for Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimation includes practitioners, industry participants at all levels of skill and experience, corporate management and board members, government agencies, academic institutions and interested parties. For practitioners, this document provides underlying key principles of environmental, social and governance practices. The ESG Guidelines provide guidance for those using environmental, social, governmental and governance information when preparing and implementing mineral exploration programs and contributing to the preparation of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for mineral properties that are either at the study stage (i.e., scoping / preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility, or feasibility studies) or in operation. The guidelines can also be used to help mineral resource and mining companies apply good practice to manage their environmental and social risks and opportunities. Companies can identify and retain appropriate professionals to prepare environmental and social materials to support company studies. The guidelines are also a resource for companies developing effective environmental and social management strategies at any project stage. This document is not intended to be prescriptive and is not intended to provide exhaustive guidance on what to consider in terms of environmental, social, legal and governmental modifying factors in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Rather, it is intended as general guidance to assist companies and practitioners in considering and applying these modifying factors for MRMR estimates. This document is also not intended to guide environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); however, the measures needed to manage impacts help inform the constraints and costs for defining mineral resources and mineral reserves and inform the costs and schedules of mineral project studies. All documentation of MRMR estimates made by an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time (Canadian Securities Administrators, 2016a and 2016b). Disclosure is not addressed in these ESG Guidelines. Determination of what to include in disclosures is defined in the applicable Securities’ legal frameworks. Appendix A presents a summary table showing the linkage of the principles and topics in these ESG Guidelines to the potential effects on project costs, schedules, government permits and approvals, social licence to operate and financing.

"THE ECSTALL CONCENTRATOR is situated adjacent to Highway 101 and the Ontario Northland Railroad, 15 miles east of Timmins, Ontario. Ore is delivered to the concentrator by rail from the mine, which is 17 miles northwest of the plant. Power and fuel are obtained from the hydro and natural gas lines which pass close to the plant site. Water is obtained from the Frederickhouse River, 6 miles east of the concentrator. The main concentrator building is a large structure 500 by 640 feet by 90 feet high and contains facilities for fine crushing, crushed ore storage, grinding, flotation, tin recovery, concentrate handling and reagent handling. Located in the same building are the machine shop, warehouse, metallurgical laboratory, pilot plant, men's change room, sample preparation area and an assay laboratory. The general concentrator layout is shown in Figure 47. Originally designed to handle 9,000 tons per day, the concentrator now treats 10,000 tons per day. Two different ore types are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits to recover copper, lead and zinc concentrates. In 1973, another circuit was added to recover pyrite and tin concentrates from the combined zinc tailings of the three main circuits."

Indigenous peoples are a unique stakeholder because their growing legal rights to lands and resources can often determine a project’s outcome. A project will only be successful if it is able to obtain the legal permits, withstand any judicial reviews, and gain and maintain the social license to operate. Lac Cinquante is a mineralogically simple, vein-hosted uranium deposit in Archean basement rocks (Angikuni greenstone belt) that originally were unconformably overlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Baker Lake Group (BLG). Basement rocks are mainly pillowed and massive tholeiitic lavas (N-MORB) with interbedded tuff; overlying sedimentary rocks comprise a basal talus/fault breccia that grades upward into fluvial sedimentary rocks and subaerial, trachytic volcanic rocks; granite and porphyry dikes (Hudson and/or Nueltin granitoids) intrude the basement rocks. A typical section through the Main Zone comprises 1) laminated ‘tuff’, 2) altered (carbonate-hematite-chlorite) schistose ‘tuff’, 3) a pitchblende-bearing, breccia-vein, 4) altered ‘tuff’, and 5) laminated ‘tuff’. The vein comprises brecciated chlorite, hematite, and pitchblende with carbonate cementing the breccia. Graphitic ‘tuff’ with sulfide-stringer veinlets locally overlies or underlies the vein. Pitchblende also occurs in the altered rocks and in gash veins that cut basement rocks. U-Pb ages on pitchblende fall into two groups: one at 1828 } 29 Ma reflects primary uranium mineralization, and a second at 1437 } 31 Ma represents resetting. Pb-Pb chemical ages show other resetting events at 1260-1321Ma, 895 Ma, 741-813 Ma, and 660-706 Ma. One possible genetic model for the Lac Cinquante deposit involves leaching of uranium from granitoids and the BLG by basinal brines that migrated to depositional sites where graphitic rocks acted as a reductant. A second model requires that uranium was sole-sourced from the BLG and that granitoid rocks provided heat to drive the hydrothermal system, which leached and ultimately precipitated uranium. The deposit has characteristics similar to vein-type uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge District of Saskatchewan

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.
