Research into the control of diesel particulates (DP) has been. conducted by BHP Coal for more than 7 years. Personal monitoring of employee exposures (n = 480 full shift samples) conducted at nine underground coal mines has indicated that the exposure of the workforce ranges from less than 0.1 to 2.2 mg/m3 of DP dependent on job type and mining operation. Approximately 50% of the mass of DP captured is elemental carbon (EC) which is the species currently being considered by some international regulatory authorities as the exposure standard. Five technologies for controlling DP were investigated in a combination of studies conducted in an above ground simulated tunnel, in a special controlled section of underground mine roadway and validated by application in standard coal mining operations at Tower Colliery. Tests conducted under controlled conditions indicate that dependent on the type of fuel in use, the introduction of low sulphur fuels can reduce DP levels in return airways by up to 50% and in actual mining situations a reduction of 20% can be achieved in exposure of the workforce. In addition, subjective responses from the workforce indicate that exhaust emissions from low sulphur fuels provide lower irritation and a more pleasant aroma. The use of water filled scrubber tanks reduces the level of DP emissions by 25%. Chemical decoking of engines resulted in a reduction of 20% in DP in return airways. A commercially available non-flammable disposable dry exhaust filter constructed from synthetic organic fibres with an operational lifetime in excess of 20 hours was found to reduce DP exhaust emissions by 80%. Investigations have indicated that the use of increased ventilation to control DP levels particularly in multiple vehicle situations does not follow a simple dilution factor and in some instances compliance with current regulatory requirements may not produce the required reduced exposure levels. The results from single component control strategies provide considerable reduction in exposure to DP, however the most efficient and cost effective control methodology is the use of a combination of individual systems modelled to operations conducted at each mine.

There are- several in-seam coal research projects currently under investigation by the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). The overall aim of the projects is to produce new technologies to enhance safety and the efficiency of in-seam gas drainage drilling. Results from high pressure waterjet rotary drilling trials indicate that by applying high pressure water to a rotary drill bit, the hole can be drilled to follow the planned trajectory very closely. Steerable drill bits for drilling long holes (>1 km) have been produced and trialed. A flexible high speed drilling system provides a capacity for rapid in-seam drilling, particularly suited to cross panel drainage. Geophysical tools are being developed to provide a geological steering capability and a better understanding of potential gas outbursts zones.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yantai area, Shandong province, China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 000 grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called æsublevel open and fill stoping methodÆ in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is satisfactory.

Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. At the outset I want to thank you for inviting a representative of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa to address you on the subject of mining and its future at this, the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is indeed a pleasure and an honour to be here. As many of you will recall, four years ago I, as the then President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, had the privilege of hosting and welcoming you to the 12th Congress, the third such congress hosted by South Africa. The late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, President of the 1930 Congress - the first to be held in South Africa - in his opening address foresaw the mining industry as "the most potent factor in spreading the benefits of civilisation over the sub-continent." We have come a long way since those halcyon days but, as I noted four years ago, it still remains true that mines have been, and will continue to be, the missionaries of development in many, if not most, of the Third World countries. I have been asked to address you on the subject of "mining" and to let my imagination roam widely so that delegates can leave the congress with a broader vision than they brought on arrival. It is a tall order and in my attempt to fulfil it I ask you to cast your minds back 120 years to a sultry, rustic day when the first diamond was discovered in South Africa at the now famous town of Kimberley. At that time the South African economy, predominantly pastoral, was still at subsistence level. Almost overnight the ensuing diamond rush turned the then British- owned northern Cape Colony's semi-desert scene into a hive of mining activity, every prospector bent on making his instant fortune. It was very little different, I am sure, to the gold rushes that hit California in 18+8, Australia in 1851, New Zealand in the 1860s. and the Yukon in the 1890s.

Zinc concentrates from the newer mines and from proposed developments provide both opportunities and processing challenges to the conventional roast-leach electrowin smelters. These concentrates are often characterised by low iron, elevated silica, possibly high manganese, and levels of elements such as germanium which may cause concern. In addition, environmental constraints on residue disposal are forcing significant changes to some smelter practices. Iron in concentrate, and the resulting environmental impact of residue disposal are now major questions. However, normal concentrate tariff structure provides a disincentive against smelters taking high grade concentrate and oxide fume. Processing technology to cope with these changes is reviewed, as is de-watering and materials handling of ultra-fine concentrate. Within a few years, such fine concentrates will account for up to 1 000 000 t/y of contained zinc. New processing technologies including novel transport methods, siliceous leach circuits, manganese removal cells and front-end smelting will become significant in zinc smelting.

The results of pot-furnace tests with 35 bituminous coals from 20 seams in New South Wales and Queensland were used to establish the relationship between coal properties, as determined by standard laboratory tests, and the combustion process. The rate of combustion is influenced chiefly by the expansion of the fuel bed, but this cannot be accurately predicted from the crucible swelling number of the coal.The effects of various other factors, such as calorific value and ash yield, were investigated and statistical analysis of the results shows that the coals could be classified satisfactorily according to two experimentally derived parameters, namely heat-release rate at an air flow rate of 260 lb/sq.ft/hr and air flow rate giving stoichiometric combustion. The grouping obtained is shown to be related to ash yield and swelling number.INTRODUCTIQNThe rate of heat release from the fuel bed of a travelling grate stoker and the efficiency with which the heat is used depend upon the design and method of operation of the furnace as well as upon the properties of the fuel. It is difficult to draw general conclusions concerning the influence of fuel properties from tests on a single stoker installation. In the pot-furnace test, on the other hand, a part of the same combustion process as occurs on a travelling grate is carried out in isolation, uninfluenced by furnace design variables, and consequently the effects of coal properties and of the method of pretreatment can readily be demonstrated.While the combustion pot provides a rapid method of assessing the combustion characteristics of a fuel during the ignition and burn-out stages under standard conditions, and of predicting changes in performance with changes in fuel or in air flow rate, it is unable to simulate certain features of furnace design and operation. Column cells are widely used today for the recovery of base metals by flotation. Their use for the flotation of iron sulphides has not been as rapid. Australia has pioneered the use of large rougher flotation columns. During the last six years, seven rougher columns have been installed on gold mines treating iron sulphides and the technical viability of this technology has been demonstrated. Laboratory column testwork on a gold bearing iron sulphide ore demonstrated the effects of both physical and chemical parameters. In general the large commercial columns operate over a broad range of conditions depending on the downstream treatment of the flotation concentrate. The addition of wash water to commercial columns is not universally applied and there appears to be a need for a better wash water System.

THE MORWELL BROWN COAL DEPOSITSTHIS deposits of brown coal in the neighbourhood of Morwell, are of tertiary age, and are represented on several horizons, but, owing to lack of evidence, the exact age cannot be fixed definitely. It is chiefly by reference to the basalt flows of the Older Volcanic series that the brown coal beds have been classified as of Pre-Volcanic and of Post-Volcanic age. The Pre-Volcanic brown coals are less widely distributed, and the seams generally are thin, though near Thorpdale a thickness of 40 tt. has been recorded, and from 10 ft. to 12 ft. in the vicinity of Narracan. Both of these localities lie to the south-west of Yallourn, and it has not been proven as yet whether these older coals and accompanying basaltic flows pass under the Morwell beds.The brown coal deposits have accumulated in an area where extensive faulting in early tertiary times has taken place with oscillations of elevation and depression of the land surface. In the vicinity of Yallourn, Paheozoic strata (probably Silurian) are exposed on either bank of the Latrobe River about a mile above the powerhouse weir, where the river flows through steep banks rising a couple of hundred feet on either side. The Silurian strata are highly inclined, and consist mostly of slates and Illudstones. Resting unconformably on the upturned edges of the Silurian is a conglomerate bed of Mesozoic age, above which occur beds clipping to the south-east of felspathic sandstones, with alternating mudstones at times carbonaceous, and containing thin seams of black coal.The brown coal seams and associated lignitic Clays, sands, gravels, etc, rest on the Mesozoic strata (as proved in the vicinity of the power-house and by boring north of the Latrobe River, near the old open cut), but do not appear on the surface of the Mesozoic, where these beds attain an altitude of more than 50 ft. above the present level of the Latrobe River.Half a mile upstream from the power-house a layer of basalt of the Older Volcanic series, almost resting upon the Silurian strata, is...

This paper descrioes a case history of a coal mine which developed un'tahle roof conditions due to mass sliding of the overburden strata on a claystone band within the coal seam. The sliding is believed to have been initiated by stress relief associated with the removal of overburden alongside the entry portal of the underground workings. Once in motion, the roof block was kept moving by bulking due to roof collapse in the normal underground goafing operations. Control measures in the form of an earth and rockfill buttress against the entry portal and a sequential mining plan to create goaf areas alongside the entry portal have been initiated to attempt to limit movement. The operation has been continually monitored and a gradually decreasing pattern of movement is being re, orded.

On Sunday morning 7th November, 1976, at approximately 2-25 a.m., smoke was discovered issuing from the 1912 m long belt drift at Appin Colliery. A Clouth steel cord rubber belt approximately 940 mm in width had been installed in the drift in 1963 on the basis that no fire resistant steel cord belt was then available to operate on a single lift at the load and on the 160 gradient of the drift. Investigation showed that the belt drift was on fire and the usually downcasting drift was upcasting. Immediate fire fighting and rescue operations were instituted and the drift was sealed off. High expansion foam was pushed into the drift from the surface and the fire was brought under control. Recovery work resulted in the fire being put out and the drift open for walking traffic by, S-P0 am., on Wednesday 10th November, 1976. lie experience gained during the fire fighting and recovery operations led to recommendations in regard to future use of high expansion foam.

The Mount Gibson goidmine is located at the southern end of the Retaliation greenstone belt within the Murchison Province, approximately 300 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Economic gold mineralization occurs in the upper part of a Tertiary lateritic surface; its ultimate source presumably being Archaean greenstones. Gold is present in the laterite profile over a distance of 4 km in four separate prospects, from north to south, Mount Gibson Well, Midway, Orion and Tobias Find, the two last constituting the Mount Gibson mine. The area has'low relief. A low ridge to the west of the mineralized zone is formed mainly of rubble with minor outcrops of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The terrain slopes gently to the northeast, and the maximum relief, in the vicinity of the mineralization, is about 20 m. The weathering profile comprises, from the surface: (i) soil, windblown sand or colluvium (thin), (ii) laterite; hardcap (including ferricrete and lesser silcrete and calcrete) is overlain by loose nodules and pisolites, and passes downwards into a mottled zone of variably ferruginized clay, (iii) clay; mainly pale brown, cream or yellow in colour, but in places contains relic quartz veins or dark ferruginous zones, (iv) clay with fragments of altered rock; normally grey to pale green in colour but sometimes includes an oxidized iron-rich horizon just above the weathered/fresh rock interface, (v) bedrock. The complete profile varies from 10-100 m thick, averaging 20 m. Zone (ii) is commonly 3-5 m thick. Loose pisolites of this zone fill cavities in the massive ironstone left by former tree roots, and cover irregular depressions which may represent former stream courses. Samples, representing 3 m intervals down the holes, have been collected from cuttings taken from rotary drill-holes along each of four traverses; one traverse at each-of the northern prospects and two traverses in the Orion part of the mine area. These samples have been submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis and for chemical analysis for a wide range of elements. Bedrock lithologies have been determined from microscope studies of bottom-of-hole chips.

This paper aims to provide some' new and original thoughts on tungsten carbide drill-bits and describe practices and performances, some of which are unique and most of which have not previously been described. Many theoretical and descriptive papers and articles on carbide bits have appeared during the last few years, and in the big majority conclusions such as these were made. These results are marked by premature failure of the bits, or The full or economic life of the bit is seldom reached due to the premature failure of the insert. Unfortunately those conclusions are seldom accompanied by the reasons for premature failure. In the few cases where reasons for failure have been advanced, very little, originality has been shown. The reasons usually given are that the failures are due to bad operators, bad workmanship, faulty steel or unsuitable machines, but it has been shown at Mount Isa that the chief reason for poor performnce is bad design.The first question asked will be, "What is wrong with the design of most bits?" and the answer'is, "The size of' the inserts". There may be many other small faults iiI different types of bit but Mount Isa experience indicates that the size of the insert is the most important factor influencing pit life. Under normal conditions it has been found, that there is a minimum size of insert that will give satisfactory performance, and this minimum is 5/16 in width and ? in. depth at the shoulder. A big majority of the bits at presentavailable in Australia do not satisfy these requirements.

Water vapour refrigeration (systems using water as the refrigerant) could potentially be used to provide chilled water at underground locations in mines, as an alternative to conventional refrigerators using refrigerants such as R-134a. The use of water as both the primary and secondary refrigerants is attractive in concept since direct-contact heat exchangers could be used, yielding higher coefficients of performance. The disadvantage of water is the very high specific volume of the vapour at low pressures, which leads to great challenges in compressor design, as has been reported previously in the context of slurry-ice plants for mine applications (Ophir and Koren, 1999). Steam ejectors have long been known as alternative compression devices for refrigerators, but no work has been done previously on the possibility of using ejectors powered by high-pressure water, which is readily available in mines from long pipe columns in vertical shafts. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation into the use of high-pressure water as the motive fluid in an ejector refrigerator. No previously reported liquid ejector system has achieved subcooling of the process fluid, ie a reduction in fluid temperature within the evaporator to a level below that of the motive fluid. In contrast, the present work demonstrated that subcooling could occur at motive water pressures above 5 MPa. Mine cooling applications were considered and it was concluded that while this concept would not be feasible as a mine-wide cooling source, there could be specialised applications where it would be beneficial. One application would be to cool backfill and thereby reduce the heat load at the working face. In this case the best performance would be achieved by using the ejector in combination with an energy recovery system such as a Pelton turbine or a three-chamber pipe feeder.

The selection and design of process options to deliver outcomes consistent with sustainable development requires simultaneous consideration of multiple objectives, within a climate of uncertainty û including the environmental and social aspects of technology management in addition to the technical and economic aspects of such. An issue of particular relevance in primary metal production is the deportment of minor and trace components within orebodies, products and wastes and the implications of such deportment for eco-efficiency û in particular, the long-term environmental impact of solid waste management practices. The identification of opportunities to enhance recovery of valuable by-products and simultaneously improve the environmental acceptability of final waste output requires a clear understanding of the distribution of the relevant ore components, which results from the choice of processing route and unit operation efficiency. This is challenging, given that process streams generated during primary metal production are generally poorly characterised and the behaviour and deportment of trace to minor and trace components is not well understood. This paper demonstrates how current data gaps and inconsistencies can be systematically addressed through the meaningful reconciliation of empirical plant data with a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms and parameters influencing element behaviour and deportment during the formation and subsequent beneficiation of mineral ore deposits. On this basis, quantitative distribution data and a comprehensive and comprehensible inventory of unit process inputs and outputs as a function of ore compositions and processing technology options can be generated, which is consistent with early design stage information requirements, both in terms of detail and accuracy, ie is æfirst-orderÆ in nature. This predictive approach to element distribution during primary metal production provides decision-makers with key information in the early design stages of a project (in terms of developing processes within the context of sustainability), whilst simultaneously guiding further data collection and environmental impact prediction studies.

Declining from surface provides access, haulageway, ventilation and provision for ser- vices for stoping and development. Three boom jumbos and 3.8 m3 capacity diesel loaders are used in decline development, the majority of which is driven at a gradient of 1 in 9. Primary ventilation is drawn from the mine through raisebored airways and high pressure contra rotating fans provide secondary ventil- ation. To meet schedules a special decline crew was formed on similar lines to a mining con- tractor. The basis of payment for the mining party was changed and the net effect was to accelerate development. Ground conditions demand constant support and this is achieved with chemical anchor rock bolts, multistrand grouted bolts and shotcrete. Major local shear zones are encountered and when they are to be driven through, a combina- tion of the above methods, involving a spiling technique, is used.

IN any assay office it is of paramount importance to keep the men interested in their work; and in order to do this, men on routine work, such as lead, zinc, and sulphur deterrrrinations, slag analysis, etc, should be changed around monthly. This gives some variety and helps to keep a man's interest on his work, so that better work results. It may be maintained that to keep a man on the same class of work indefinitely makes him more expert at his work. This is certainly true; but in assaying, where accuracy is so essential, it is absolutely necessary for a man to keep his mind on the work, and not 'get' into a mechanical method of working. He is also on the alert to discover means for shortening his analytical methods, and his capacity forwork is increased. Another advantage is that the men get a good all-round training, and one is never at a loss to replace a man on any class of work when he is absent from any cause. This tends to smoother and more efficient running of the assay department. In industrial assaying it is often advantageous to have a result quickly, so that it will be of maximum benefit in the running of some part of the plant, In such a case it pays to sacrifice a little accuracy to speed up a method. The shortest method is less costly, and a quick approximate method is all that is required to give the superintendent the requisite information. Time is thereby saved, and the cost is less. In carrying out assaying for any large industrial plant, such as a smelting works, there is always a tendency for superintendents running the different departments to send in more samples for assay than are absolutely necessary when no system of costing is in operation. Some of these samples may involve a lot of work and heavy expenditure, as, for example, the estimation of only one impurity in a sample of refined lead.
