At NewcrestÆs Telfer gold mine, a strategy of regrinding pyrite rougher flotation concentrates has been proposed to increase gold recovery and reduce cyanide consumption in the CIL circuit. The regrinding will be followed by an additional copper/gold flotation stage, where copper minerals need to be separated from pyrite. However, although the minerals are well liberated, the separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite in the cleaner stage is not always straightforward. The surfaces of the fine particles, produced during regrinding, are more easily oxidised and contaminated than coarse particles, directly influencing the particle floatability. The depression of pyrite is difficult in the cleaner stage as well due to copper activation, a process which is also highly dependent on the grinding environment. In this study, different grinding media, including mild steel and stainless steel, was used in the regrinding to produce different regrinding chemistry, such as, pH, Eh, and iron hydroxide contamination. The effects of regrinding conditions on chalcopyrite flotation and its separation from pyrite were studied. It was found that the stainless steel grinding media, which produced an oxidising environment, was more beneficial for the separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite after regrinding. The mild steel grinding media had a detrimental effect on both chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation. The impact computers are having in geoscience is distinctly mixed. In the petroleum industry where much of the data are based on geophysics, computers have become an integral part of exploration and reservoir evaluation and simulation. In the minerals industry, the trend to computerisation is more advanced in some disciplines than others. Geophysical and remote sensing data are routinely processed and imaged using state of the art computer techniques. Mine surveying, planning, design and resource and ore reserve estimation are now all predominantly reliant on computers. However senior management of many companies, particularly in the mineral exploration industry, are still reticent to fully embrace the technology. 3D computer modelling of geology and orebody delineation is still largely in its infancy. Two current and significant drawbacks to the routine use of computer modelling of geology in both mining and exploration are the tedious and time consuming modelling process and the lack of seamless interaction between 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software and geographical information systems (GIS) which are largely 2D in their data treatment. There is an urgent need for a 3D spatial information system (eg 3D GIS) with intelligent and rapid modelling functionality. One of the keys to the successful building of 3D geological computer models begins with data base structure and design to ensure that there is no loss of data fidelity through data capture, storage, manipulation and modelling. Once a model is constructed, the latest generations of visualisation software provide sophisticated environments over a range of hardware platforms for visualisation in both mono and stereo viewing. The face of project evaluation is changing continuously, making it ever more critical to get a clear understanding upfront of the objectives, decision-making processes and criteria of the project proponents. Requirements are usually significantly different for emerging æjuniorsÆ compared with long established major mining houses and companies in developing countries compared with western companies. Requirements are also different for different types of evaluations, such as due diligence studies compared with feasibility studies of æownedÆ projects and there are often key misunderstandings around the use of the term æbankableÆ. Further, it has become increasingly important with increasingly remote and lower quality resources to understand risk relativities such as infrastructure compared with the core processing facilities. This has also driven the need for more trade-off studies to determine the best balance between critical issues, such as optimisation of the interface between mine and processing plant, capital versus operating cost and automation versus labour. In every project evaluation, it is also critical to consider emerging trends and changing requirements and standards such as sustainability and community interface. Finally, the inescapable drive to reduce time to market has driven changes such as increased use of more standardised designs and innovative approaches to the transition from project development to execution. This paper begins with a brief review of the different objectives and risks of each project development stage to establish a framework for subsequent discussion of the different requirements of different types of companies in different locations, different types of evaluations and different types of projects and project components. This is followed by a review of changing requirements and standards and some innovative developments in sustainability and community interface are presented. Finally, the paper outlines a number of developments in the area of operational readiness planning that focus on minimising the time to achieve maximum return on investment.

In combination with detailed field studies and goaf gas characterisation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have been used to develop optimum and effective strategies for inertisation during longwall sealing operations to achieve goaf inertisation within a few hours of panel seal-off operation. This study has combined detailed analysis of the performance of various inertisation field trials together with CFD modelling results of different inertisation operations in order to develop the optimum inertisation strategies. A number of parametric studies were conducted on the base case CFD models that had been calibrated and validated based on the information obtained from previous inertisation studies and goaf gas monitoring. These studies included changes in inert gas injection locations, inert gas flow rates, seam gradients, and different inertisation strategies to investigate their effect on goaf inertisation. Studies indicate that the strategy of inert gas injection through the MG seal was not as effective as the alternative strategy of inert gas injection at 200 m behind the face. Innovative inertisation strategies have been developed and subsequently implemented at an underground coal mine in Australia. Further investigations have been carried out in the development and demonstration of proactive inertisation strategies with the objective to suppress the occurrence of spontaneous heatings in active longwall faces, in particular under unexpected scenarios such as during slow retreat/face stoppage due to difficult geological conditions. Initial trials at two Australian longwall panels have demonstrated the great potential of this practice to contain the onset of heatings in the goaf.

An advanced technique for modelling hydrocyclone separation performance has been developed. This technique is based on the combined modelling of hydrocycloning parameters and ævirtualÆ iron ore feed. The virtual feed modelling was performed using a novel (in-house) software package called æRecognitionÆ, which uses data from optical image analysis to classify the particles in certain size fractions according to total iron content and calculates data for every grade class. These data include the average mineral composition and density of every liberation class in every size fraction. This information about every size fraction, representing the ævirtual feedÆ, was input to the mineral processing modelling package USIM PAC. The hydrocycloning process was then modelled for this virtual feed using the Plitt hydrocyclone model. Empirical calibration coefficients for the hydrocyclone model were calculated using an optimisation procedure in Excel. Pilot-scale hydrocyclone beneficiation experiments were performed on an iron ore blend, using different hydrocyclone pressures and per cent solids in the feed pulp. These experiments were modelled and the modelling results were compared with the experimental results. The new modelling approach enables prediction of the recovery of each mineral in the products, calculation of the total iron grade and recovery, and optimisation of iron ore beneficiation using hydrocyclones.

The WA Goldfields is a highly productive gold and nickel mining area, but is arid with highly saline groundwater. Groundwater is widely used to supply process water to mines in the region but high groundwater salinity, commonly exceeding 50 000 mg/L TDS, tends to increase processing costs, limit end uses for the water, cause problems with disposal and potentially increase impacts on a sensitive arid environment. The area has low rainfall (200 - 270 mm/year) but run-off, particularly during cyclonic events, is high. Our experience suggests that stream flow from catchments in the area can produce a divertible yield of 8 - 17 ML/km2/year. An evaluation of stream flow harvesting using AnglogoldÆs Jubilee Pit predicted that 1000 ML/year of good quality water could reliably be supplied to the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. Because of high rainfall variability, it is likely that an alternate source of water supply will be necessary when operating a surface-water harvesting scheme in the WA Goldfields. However, a combination surface/groundwater supply could have substantial cost, operational and environmental benefits compared to traditional supply systems that utilise groundwater only.

Ore samples from the South, Central and North ore-bodies of the King Cassilis Mine, near Omeo, Victoria, were broken and transported to Melbourne for experimental metallurgical treatment. A microscopical examination of individual unoxidised specimens, selected from these samples, was undertaken in order to thro'w as much light as possible on the occurrence of the gold which forms the valuable economic mineral in the ore.The following descriptions are the outcome' of this examination and show that very minute particles of free gold are mechanically associated with the sulphides. While the gold may be separated from the transparent gangue minerals by the flotation of the sulphides, the, actual size of the particles indicates that it is impossible to separate all the gold from the sulphides by grinding the ore to pass through a screen of 200 mesh in which the average width of the holes is 0.063 mm. The Burragorang Valley lies approx. 95 km by road south west of Sydney and some 35 km west of Camden. It is over 80 km in length and varies in width from 3 km to over 16 km. Geologically, the history of the Burragorang Valley is of interest. It was referred to by early geographers and N.R.M.A. booklets as the largest sunken valley in Australia. This description is incorrect as it is a water worn valley formed by the dissection of an uplift in the south western portion of the large Sydney Sedimentary Basin. Ages2 ago there extended right across the Blue Mountains, a continuous tableland into which the Nattai, Wollondilly and Cox's Rivers have carved out the formation of the Burragorang. This dissection together with other valleys such as the Megalong, Jamieson and Grose, formed part of the eastward drainage pattern of the uplifting tableland into the Pacific ocean. This paper reviews some of the factors thought to control the formation of supergene gold in the Pacific and its Rim. Discussion of these should lead to reassessment of the economic potential of many areas. In several parts of the world many gold-bearing veins display rich gold values only in the oxidized zone, whereas beneath the present (or ancient) watertable the unaltered vein commonly holds only sub-economic refractory low grade sulphides or arsenides. In the Eastern Highlands of Australia some of the most spectacular concentrations of - gold have been found at shallow depths. For example, Harper (1918) describes the Canton mine in New South Wales which was stoped over a length of 180 metres from the 45 metre level to the surface. The reef yielded gold at 300 g/t in the upper levels, but became gradually poorer at depth. Present geologists of N.S.W. Geol. Survey, G.R. Mcllveen and B.P.J. Stevens, believe that many similar Australian enrichments were formed between the surface and its ancient water table level during the extended period of weathering in the Eocene or pre-Eocene. They concede, however, that further supergene movement of gold may have occurred since the early Tertiary. Large quantities of Mesozoic supergene gold of extreme fineness (Au 99.7%, Cu +òFe 0.3%; Leibius 1885) was found at Mt. Morgan near the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland. Lower Jurassic sediments cover part of the gossan in a small depression caused by oxidation and collapse of the Main Pipe, thus showing that the supergene gold is pre-Lower Jurassic (Cornelius, 1968). Because the Lower Jurassic landscape around Mt. Morgan was mature with a surface slope of less than 10 (Playford and Cornelius, 1967), erosion would have been very slow. Moreover, once all sulphides had been removed from the ore body the Lower Jurassic environment would have reverted from highly acid to alkaline as it is at present. Accordingly, gold, goethite and 1. With constantly rising energy costs it is ever more important that we look at ways of im- proving comminution efficiency both in terms of power consumed as well as capital costs required for purchasing and installing equipment. I intend to show that commonly used appli- cation criteria, which is presently accepted for designing crushing and screening plants, need drastic revision if it is to be used to accura- tely design, predict and refine performance in new and existing facilities. Unless we can calculate performance accurately, we cannot minimise capital investment and maximize Profitability.

The mineral sand orebodies of the east coast of Australia occupy approximately three per cent of the dune-heath-wetland coastal environment. They are associated with coastal plant communities ranging from Holocene high dunes carrying mature Eucalypt forests to low- lying heaths on Pleistocene deposits. Commonly, 0.25 to 1.5 per cent of the sand volume mined is removed from the site. Therefore, the volume change is insignificant. The equipment and techniques in use are flexible and the land can be returned in a manner suited to its subsequent use for grazing, subdivision or recreation. Landforms similar to the pre-existing are created in two case studies given. Sophisticated revegetation techniques are practised and are discussed in two case studies. Pre-mining vegetation surveys and post-mining monitoring are used to guide the management of the ecosystem.

Exposed, open pit mine highwalls contribute significantly to the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) thus causing environmental concerns upon closure of an operating mine. Four innovative technologies were evaluated under the US Environmental Protection AgencyÆs, Mine Waste Technology (MWTP), Prevention of AMD Generation from Open Pit Highwalls Demonstration Project. This project is funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the US Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement. The objective of the field demonstration was to evaluate the technologies ability to decrease or eliminate acid generation from treated areas of the highwall in comparison an untreated highwall area. The field demonstration was performed at the Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) a subsidiary of Placer Dome US, located near Whitehall, Montana. GSM is an operating gold mine. The highwall at GSM was divided into five plots measuring 15.24 by 15.24 m and each technology was assigned a plot with the fifth plot being used for comparison as a background control plot. The four technologies were spray-applied. The applied in situ treatment technologies included: a modified, furfuryl alcohol resin sealant, utilising wood and agricultural by-products to coat the rock surface; EcobondTM ARD, a phosphate based process that forms a stable, insoluble compound, coating the rock surface; and two AMD passivation technologies, magnesium oxide and the Dupont technology developed to create an inert layer/coating on the pyrite, preventing oxidation. The technologies were evaluated using the following methods: ASTM D 5744-96, accelerated weathering of solid materials using a modified humidity cells; mine wall residual wall rinse sampling; microscopy; and core drilling followed by water injection testing. The following paper describes the technologies used for passivation of acid generation from the highwall, the field demonstration, and the testing results from the background and each technology plot.

Geological studies and satellite imagery of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Northeastern Australia, have shown that the significant structural controls are a series of major North East/South West (NE/SW) trending structures, which can be traced as lineaments on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA-AVHRR) imagery as well as on both Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. These linea- ments can be traced offshore and into the Coral Sea by the distribution of offshore reefs and the bathymetery of the Queensland Shelf and the Queensland and Marion Plateaus. The seismic activity in Eastern Queensland seems to be divided into two distinct provinces separated by a seismically quiet area. This apparent seismically quiet area is bounded by two of the large lineaments seen on the satellite imagery. These features could be related to the deep crustal structure of Eastern Queensland and to the opening of the Coral Sea.

Surface mining accounts for more than 50% of the world's total mineral production. In future years this status is expected to change somewhat in favour of surface mining. The production technology during the past decade has concentrated on greater degree of mechanization with high capacity heavy duty equip- ment. This trend will continue. Next two decades will also see microproces- ,or based equipment, health and performance monitoring and management information systems fully integrated with excavated and material handling systems which in themselves will be amenable to auto- matic and remote control. Computerized mine planning will also be integrated within the system providing a fully integrated planning, excavat- ing and materials handling system. The surface mines of the 1990's and beyond will be so computer dependent that manpower will be reduced to one third of current levels.

The Curragh coal mining operation was designed and constructed to produce two coals initially at a rate of 4.3Mtpa. These are a high thermal energy steam coal primarily for domestic electricity generation and a low ash high quality coking product for the export market. Treatment of coals from four seams to achieve this requires a large and complex preparation plant and blending facilities incorporating state of the art technology. This facility was constructed during 1982/83. It has been designed for expansion to 6.8Mtpa capacity. The preparation and handling facilities were built at a cost of approximately A$80 million. Equipment includes 500 plus electric drives with a total capacity of 20 000kw. Commissioning was carried out in three phases : Staging - of the control system Coal Handling Facilities - conveyors, stackers and reclaimers for raw and product coals The Coal Preparation Plant - heavy media cyclones and froth flotation. A period of three months was devoted to the commissioning of the plant before requiring product coal to contract specification. This paper will describe the planning, implementation and results achieved.

Christmas Island "C"-grade phosphate consists essentially of the minerals crandallite and millisite. Although containing over 25% P205, this material is not suitable for the manufacture of water-soluble phosphate fertilizers by conventional processes, because of its high iron and aluminium content Cover 25% total R203). In order to produce a water-soluble fertilizer from such material it is necessary to separate the iron and aluminium from the phosphate, which must report in a product acceptable as a fertilizer. Several processes were studied in detail. The first used ion exchange for dissolution and separation and yielded diammonium phosphate; processing costs were high compared with conven- tional processes based on apatite. The latter processes have basically simple flowsheets and cost of processing is low when compared with the costs of the raw materials. The need to separate iron and aluminium from the phosphate introduces additional complexity into the treatment of the C-grade material. The higher processing costs might be justified, however, if alumina could be produced as a byproduct. Two proposed processes have been developed in which: 1. hydrochloric acid is used for dissolution, and solvent extrac- tion for the separation of ferric chloride from phosphoric acid. Aluminium chloride is precipitated and hydrolysed to recover alumina and hydrochloric acid. 2. sulphuric acid is used for dissolution and aluminium is crystallized as ammonium alum. The phosphate is produced as an ammonium phosphate-sulphate fertilizer. High purity alumina can be obtained by treatment of the recrystallized alum. The technology of these processes is described, and their broad economics discussed briefly.\

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. This paper presents the water management plan of the Mae Moh Project in the North of Thailand, which includes a large lignite opencast mine and thermal power plants. Lignite production will increase from the present 5.5 million tons per annum to approximately 20 million tons per annum by 1995 when the pit area will be about 20 sq.km. and the depth at over 300 meters. Seven power plants are proposed of which two are under construction. The total capacity to be installed is 2,925 MW. The principles considered for water management are firstly flood protection, including drainage of the mining pit and diversion of the Mae Moh stream away from proposed future mining areas; and secondly, a plan to meet the water requirement of the thermal power plants, while maintaining downstream supplies for irrigation and other purposes. The limited annual run-off of Mae Moh and Mae Chang watershed basins are inadequate for the proposed power plants. A study has been prepared to compare two approaches, namely conveying water from remote watersheds to meet the water requirement of the power plants up to total installed capacity; or by limiting future total generation, at the existing site, to only 2025 MV.

The general level of awareness amongst members of the professions that they are faced with an increasing number of claims for breaches of their professional duty was dramatically heightened by the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v Hutcheson (1985) 3 ACLR when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million - well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be found in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for that result rested on the issue of whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability.

The Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is responsible for several sets of legislation, which, among other things, regulate the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods as well as every aspect of the life cycle of explosives in order to prevent explosions, fires and spillages. The legislation with particular relevance to explosives includes: The Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act 1961; the act deals with the storage, manufacture, sale, import, authorisation and use of explosives. It is primarily framed for use of explosives and fireworks in the general community but also has relevance for storage on mine sites. The Dangerous Goods (Transport) Act 1998; this act regulates the transport of explosives on public roads, but not on mine sites. The Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (MSI Act); this act and supporting regulations deal with the full spectrum of occupational health and safety in the mining industry. There is a substantial section in the regulations dealing with the use of explosives at a mine site.DoIR has identified the need for security upgrades of the Government Explosives Reserves, the need to tighten security measures at mine sites, the need for improved security checking for licensed shotfirers and the need to restrict the availability of explosives to authorised people who have had appropriate security checks. It is also clear that we need restrictions on the sale and use of ammonium nitrate (AN). A number of additional security measures are being proposed and all proposals are being refined by ongoing industry consultations. These will be adopted into new explosives regulations in association with the new Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2002 (DGS Act). Government finalised the act in June 2004. The act remains dormant until new explosives and dangerous goods regulations have been prepared. When the DGS Act and a suite of regulations are proclaimed as a package, sometime between December 2004 and April 2005, the old legislation consisting of the current two acts, will be automatically repealed. It is also proposed that all explosive regulation, including those under the MSI Act will be consolidated in one place under the DGS Act for user friendliness.
