A review of ground control procedures in Western Australian underground mines is presented. Geotechnical input into initial mine design and methods of ground control is rare. As a result, the frequency of unexpected rockfalls is comparatively high, with over three quarters of the mines adopting non-specialist ground control designs experiencing unexpected falls-of-ground. In contrast, mines that provide some level of specialist input into initial ground control design experience decreased rockfall frequencies.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

The Maragorik prospect is an example of high sulphidation, Cu/Au mineralisation occurring at a high level in the hydrothermal system. As extensive ash deposits blanket the region, controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT), in conjunct-ion with bulldozer trenching, have been used to delineate subsurface geology. Fluid upflow has occurred along EW structures dilated by rotation on the bounding major NW lineaments. Rising hydrothermal fluids have exploited permeable horizons in contact with the upflow structures. This lithological control is evident as ledges of silicification and peripheral clay alteration, at high levels in the system. As is typical of high sulphidation systems, a two phase fluid consists of an initial rapidly moving vapour-dominated phase, followed by a liquid-dominated phase. Much of the zoned and overprinted silica to clay alteration is developed from the vapour-dominated fluid. Mineral deposition occurs as a result of brecciation of the competent silic-ification by liquid phase fluids. Such mineralisation is of restricted volume in ledges proximal to the feeder structures.The style of alteration and mineralisation are indicative of a very low temperature and hence a high level system. Thus, although high sulphid-ation systems are inferred to develop from porphyry-related magmatic fluids, such a source at Maragorik is interpreted to be very deeply buried.

Mill relining is a major contributor to overall plant downtime. Reducing the number of mill liner pieces removed from and replaced in the mill has a direct impact on the overall reline time and in turn, mill availability. To improve the mill availability of Ridgeway OperationsÆ 32 foot SAG mill, a number of initiatives were implemented in terms of liner design. These included the conversion of the shell from 40 to 30 rows, reducing the number of pieces from 80 to 60 each shell reline and reducing the number of pieces from 48 to 32 per feed end reline. In addition, modifications were made to the discharge end of the mill to extend the life of the outer pulp lifter and discharge cone, thereby reducing the frequency of change out. The standard radial outer pulp lifter was converted to an angled design. The discharge cone was converted to the BullnoseTM design supplied by Bradken. This paper discusses the design changes made and the expected benefits to the Ridgeway Operations in terms of mill availability improvements.

At New Celebration Gold Mine the advent of treating primary sulphide ores resulted in decreased gold recoveries of four to ten per cent. The grind coarsened due to an increase in ore hardness and gold in the residue was found to be associated with pyrite. Finer grinding improved recoveries but was impractical as production rates would have decreased to unacceptable levels. An alternative approach that has proved to be viable combines both gravity separation, to recover the coarse gold bearing sulphides, and then regrinding the concentrate in a tower mill prior to releaching in the cyanide leach circuit. The tailings treatment plant was commissioned in December 1990 and details of the first 18 months' operations are Provided.

This is particularly true today where huge fluctuations in commodity prices makes mining a perilous undertaking while the world increasingly are becoming aware of the serious threat that mans activities has on his environment. The LeadtZinc Concentrator at Mount lsa treats all the lead-zinc-silver ore from the Mount Isa Mine and some of the ore from the Hilton Mine. This concentrator was commissioned in June 1966 and total lead-zinc-silver ore treatment was transferred from the Mount rsa's original No 1 Concentrator in May 1967. Plant capacity is around 5 x 106 t/y.There have been three phases of major plant modifications since commissioning:1. replacement and upgrading of the flotation section in 1979; 2. upgrading of the crushing plant and installation of a heavy medium hydrocyclone plant in 1983 for ore preconcentration, and; 3. doubling ball milling capacity and a further upgrading of the flotation section in 1992.Other developments have included the installation of flotation columns and Jameson cells.The evolution of milling practice since 1955 has been reported by Davey and Slaughter (1970), Bartrum, Dobrowolski and Schache (1977), Fiedler and Munro (1984) and Espinosa-Gomez el al (1989).Lead concentrate is smelted in Mount Isa while zinc concentrate and bulk concentrate (locally called Low Grade Middlings or LGM) are railed to Townsville and shipped to custom electrolytic zinc plants and ISP smelters.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

It is well known that some sinkholes or subsidence take place from time to time in the areas where abandoned room and pillar type mines exist. The authors have been involved with the stability of abandoned mines beneath urbanized residential areas in Tokai region and there is a great concern about the stability of these abandoned mines during large earthquakes as well as in long term. The 2003 Miyagi Hokubu and 2011 Great East Japan earthquakes caused great damage to abandoned mines and resulted in many collapses. Particularly the effect of the quality of backfilling of abandoned mine below the urbanized areas is very important under static and dynamic conditions. The authors present the effect of the quality of backfilling on the ground subsidence associated with abandoned lignite mines under static and dynamic conditions and discuss its implications on the urbanized areas above abandoned lignite mines in this study. A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant. Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.

Underground mining in the West Moreton coal field started in the 1870's. Subsidence related to coal mining activities is an ongoing problem facing planners and developers in the Ipswich area in South Eastern Queensland. The history of coal mining in the area over the last 110 years has left the legacy of periodic surface instability in several areas. In general, modern engineering analysis with current mining methods combine to create predicatable analysis of surface stability and movement. Where old workings using several variations of the bord and pillar system are affected by current activity, the predictibility of the surface movement is greatly reduced. Geological complexities further complicate the analysis. Mining and the related dewatering affects the stresses on pillars in old workings. This is caused by reducing buoyancy effects caused by changes in the water levels in old workings. Of particular relevance is the depth of workings and strength of the coal and overburden. The type of subsidence affecting the surface can range from localised pillar failure, to roof failure and potholing and the likelihood of the particular form of subsidence can be assessed from studying the workings in relation to the stratigraphy and structure of the coal measure Formations.

This paper is an outgrowth of a continuing compilation of the geology of Chilean ore deposits by Carlos Ruiz who was the author in 1965 of Geologia y Yacimientos Metaliferos de Chile which was the definitive compilation of the ore deposits of Chile. A new version was written by him in 1988, with the co-operation of Federico Peebles L, published in Geologia, Distribucion y Genesis de los Yacimientos Metaliferos Chilenos. Over the past eight years J David Lowell studied the geology of the Chilean mineral belts in connection with planning mineral exploration for copper and gold.

A database of over 1300 earthquakes has been used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and tectonics in two areas of eastern Queensland and NE New South Wales. These areas have been monitored by several networks that were installed primarily to monitor seismicity associated with the impounding of large reservoirs. Events that occurred prior to the installation of these networks have been excluded from the analysis because they have large uncertainties in location.Seismicity in SE Queensland and NE New South Wales is concentrated in the coastal regions. Activity also extends off the coast of Queensland and beyond the continental shelf. The coastal activity is mainly within the New England Fold Belt. An area of the fold belt overlain by the Clarence-Moreton Basin is also active. There is an area of activity near St. George that correlates to the Wunger Ridge. Fraser Island and the adjacent onshore area, near Maryborough, are notably aseismic.Within the New England Fold Belt there is a NNW trending zone of concentrated activity that includes the South D'Aguilar Block and the Esk Trough as far as Gayndah. The Nambour Basin, the Gympie Province, and the southern portion of the Yarrol Block are significantly less active.Composite focal mechanisms of several groups of accurately located earthquakes in SE Queensland indicate predominantly reverse faulting. This faulting is the result of the crust being compressed horizontally in a NE-SW direction.Activity in the Burdekin Falls Dam area of central eastern Queensland is confined to the Drummond and Bowen Basins. There is also significant activity offshore from Townsville and Bowen.

Ora Banda Gold Mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Mining is carried out underground by sublevel open sloping resulting in large open stopes. A Mass Blast of approximately 250 000 tonnes was carried out in July 1994 to recover a rib pillar between two stopes, and the crown pillar between the underground mine and the abandoned open pit above. Strategic development within 50 m of the blast consisted of two ventilation shafts and the main decline. This development required careful design and prediction of the blast results. This paper describes the design of the blast, the prediction of the likely effects, the measures taken to reduce the risk to important development, and the results of the blast.

CONCEPTS AND REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Charters Towers region holds many keys to the metallogeny associated with the complex geological development of eastern Australia during the Palaeozoic. Tectonic, magmatic and volcano-sedimentary depositional episodes can be identified and related to the chronological development of batholithic host rocks (Clarke & Paine, 1970; Henderson, 1986; Murray, 1986). Pre-batholithic basement rocks in the north (Charters Towers Metamorphics) consist of a package of amphibolite grade schists interlayered with and intruded by gabbros and diorites (Peters, 1987). To the south (Seventy Mile Range Group) greenschist facies Cambro-Ordovician rocks overly some of the basement. The lower age of this basement is not constrained, parts of it could be as old as Pre-Cambrian. Mid-Ordovician (approx. 470 my) to Lower Devonian (approx. 400 my) age I-Type granitoid plutons of the composite Ravenswood batholith intrude the pre-batholith basement and the Seventy Mile Range Group. Igneous activity was initiated again in the Carboniferous with the extrusion of rhyolitic lavas and pyroclastics associated with porphyry and high-level intrusive complexes (Wyatt et al., 1971). The Ravenswood block is bounded by Devonian and Tertiary sedimentary sequences of mainly continental provenence.

A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.
