Quaternary warping and uplift of antiformal schist ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand, has resulted in recycling of alluvial gold from widespread, generally weakly auriferous, Miocene fluvial gravels that unconformably overlie the schist, into aprons of fan sediments along the range margins. Basement erosion during uplift has been limited and so gold input from sparse gold-bearing quartz veins in the schist has been relatively minor. In an eluvial cycle on the slopes of the ranges, chemical remobilization of gold occurs during oxidation and erosion of the Miocene sediments. The typically fine-grained (300-400¦m) gold undergoes chemical modification and grain size enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude, and much of it is redeposited in a large number of relatively small alluvial fans along the range margins. Groundwater mobility within the fans results in minor additional gold mobility and grain size Enhancement.

Investigation of standard tests used to establish the decrepitation rating of Western Australian iron ore showed scatter in results which could be reduced by textural type sampling. Testing of individual textural types resulted in separation.of a range of decrepitation behaviour patterns. No unique correlation was established between water content in goethite, or between any single mechanism and breakage in shock heating. The latter depends rather on several mechan- isms whose operation is controlled by the texture of the ore. Texture studies were used successfully to predict decrepitation behaviour which could be related to orebody structure for mine planning, and blending for sales or processing requirements.

There have been many published mathematical models that, to varying degrees of sophistication, attempt to describe dynamic thickener behaviour. CSIRO has undertaken to develop a model under industry sponsorship. Recently developed instruments such as the floc density analyser and natural gamma-ray gauge have enabled new data to be collected from plant thickeners for model validation and development. The principles behind the use of the natural gamma-ray gauge are described and the possibilities for its use as a control instrument in the bed have been examined. A simple nomograph illustrates how the gamma-ray gauge data can be used to predict steady state underflow consistency and bed Position.

Recent advances in computer simulation together with field measurements of caving and microseismic activity about longwall panels, has allowed a much better understanding of the caving process and the variability due to geology. The joint research between SCT Operations and CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining has initiated new methods of computational modelling predicting various caving patterns and strata failure far ahead of the longwall face. This work was validated by field measurements of caving and microseismic activity at the longwall face.The rock fracture distribution and the caving characteristics of a range of strata sections have been simulated by computer methods. Validation studies of the method were addressed together with case studies. The interaction of caving with support convergence and face control is presented. The method allows the simulation of longwall support behaviour under various geological conditions. The system also allows a prediction of the monitoring data, which is best suited to give an early warning of weighting events or signal various key caving characteristics.

The results of about 30 years of exploration and mining activities and research studies in the Kambalda mining district, Western Australia, have led to general agreement that the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores formed as a result of igneous processes (Ross, 1974; Ross and Hopkins, 1975; Gresham and Loftus-Hills, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Lesher, 1989 and many others). Despite this agreement, the controls on sulphide supersaturation and concentration of the resulting sulphide in a limited zone, remain uncertain and controversial. A major uncertainty is the source of sulphur in the ore deposits. Two principal sulphur sources have been proposed: 1. komatiite lava/magma (Hudson, 1972; Naldrett, 1973; Lesher et al, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Foster et at, 1995), and 2. sedimentary material (Groves, Barrett and McQueen, 1979; Lesher, Arndt and Groves, 1984; Lesher, 1989; Lesher and Campbell, 1993). Resolution of the uncertainty regarding the sulphur source is required for a complete understanding of the controls on ore formation, which in turn would significantly impact exploration strategies in the Kambalda mining district and elsewhere. This paper reviews the constraints on sulphur sources for the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores in the Kambalda mining district. The focus is on the general characteristics of the ores and surrounding rocks: individual ore deposits are not described, though specific examples are noted where appropriate. The stratigraphic and volcanic settings and geochemical (major and trace element and isotopic compositions) characteristics of the ore deposits and surrounding rocks are considered within the context of the competing sulphur source models, and future directions of research in the district are noted.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

A detailed study was undertaken on the effect of Fe+3 in combination with LIX64N during copper electrowinning from sulphate electrolytes. The results show that the presence of Fe+3 not only affects the current efficiency during copper electrowinning but also affects the cathode quality. The effect is enhanced by electrolysis parameters like temperature, circulation rate, current density, etc. No significant effect was found from the presence of Fe+2. The presence of Fe+3 along with LIX64N causes a synergistic effect and results in a drastic fall in current efficiency. Moreover, cathode quality is also affected. A pyramidal structure is favoured in the presence of Fe+3 but the presence of LIX64N along with Fe+3 promotes a ridge structure. Addition of thiourea not only causes modification of cathode deposits, but also a rise in current Efficiency.

The Ore Reserve System implemented at Mount Isa for Mount Isa Mines Limited is a comprehensive' computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data for Isa and Hilton Mines. This paper outlines the achievements of this system to date and by example, discusses the various reports and plotted output available. __ The impact of the ore reserve system particularly within the-Geology and Mine Plan ning Departments is reviewed in terms of new approaches to ore reserve calculations, evaluating the economics of various mining methods and reviewing preliminary stope designs. The compilation of metal distributions for both copper and lead orebodies at varying cut offs and reducing the involvement of skilled personnel in preparing non-standard plots of borehole paths are discussed. Options available through the system and their applications are outlined together with the planned future development of the system.

To follow the development of the central crushing plant it is necessary briefly to outline the history of the Lake View and Star Limited. This Company, when first constituted, took over the properties of the Lake View Consols, Hannan's Star, and Chaffers Gold Mines.The Company then treated the ore won from these leases at two dry crushing, all-roasting plants, situated adjacent to each other on the site of the present Chaffers Treatment Plant that handles all the ore won by the Lake View and Star Ltd.SUbsequent to the initial union of the three companies mentioned, the Ivanhoe Gold Corporation and the Golden Horse Shoe Ltd. were absorbed. Still later, and after the original crushing plant was erected, the Associated Gold Mines of Australia were purchased.A very extensive development policy was adopted by the Company's management in the late 1920's, and as the underground programme progressed, it became eVident that a large treatment plant would be required. Extensive reserves of kaolin of the type suitable for use as a high quality paper coating exist on the Weipa Peninsula. In 1986 a commercial processing plant was constructed to produce 100 000 tonnes per annum of coating quality kaolin targetted principally for export. A number of processing difficulties have limited the production capability of the plant. The prime area being the pressure filtration operation with achieved cycle times being around 50-60% of design. The rate determining steps being press filling, press unloading and filter cloth washing. This paper details and summarises testwork and results from our attempts at decreasing the filtration cycle time.

Lightweight polymer grids have recently been introduced to the mining industry. They are currently being used for roof and rib control, longwall shield recovery, safety guarding or barricade, highwall screening, internal reinforcement of gunnite/shotcrete applications, sub-base reinforcement, construction of steepened slopes, retaining walls, mine reclamation (i.e. erosion control, turf reinforcement), and in numerous mining waste related projects. These polymer mining grids utilize a strong, lightweight polymer, usually special grades of polypropylene or polyethylene. High tensile strengths are achieved by molecular orientation of these polymers in the manufacturing process. The first step in the manufacturing process is to extrude the polymers into thick continuous sheets. These sheets are then punched, and drawn into open grid structures. Aperture size and configuration are controlled by the geometry of the punched hole and the degree to which the grids are stretched. The drawing process is the key to the molecular orientation required for the tensile strengths. These long chain polymer molecules in their natural state have a random orientation. When stretched, the molecules are pulled into a parallel alignment, thus creating a lightweight product with tensile strength comparable to Steel.

New structural studies in the Walker Fault Zone of eastern Arnhem Land are integrated with basin-wide reconnaissance observations, made to refine models for the structural evolution of the McArthur Basin and provide new insights into the nature of metal logenetical ly important pre-inversion phases of the basin's evolution. At least five principal events may be identified during the Proterozoic: The Tawallah Group and equivalents were deposited throughout the McArthur Basin during an extensional event. Rifting of an incipient Batten Trough occurred at this time, in a terrain characterised by orthogonal, linked extensional faults. Uplift and erosion of the Tawallah Group accompanied continuing extension and was penecontemporaneous with continuing deposition of the overlying Parsons Range Group, within a precursor to the Walker Trough. Dt (of the Walker Fault Zone) relates to a new rifting event, penecontemporaneous with deposition of the McArthur Group and its equivalents in the Walker and Batten Troughs. This rifting accompanied dextral strike-slip faulting along northerly-trending bounding faults, as a result of northwesterly-directed oblique extension, leading to pull-apart basins. D2 inversion of the Batten and Walker Fault Zones pre-dates deposition of the Roper Group. In the proposed model WNW-ESE directed shortening (D2.), accompanied by folding and thrusting, and by local development of cleavage in the Walker Fault Zone, is seen to be followed by northerly-trending sinistral faulting (D2b), about a SE to ESE-directed compression. D3 is basin-wide and post-dates the Roper Group. It is characterised by conjugate faulting and folding about ENE to NE-directed compression. The latest Proterozoic event to be identified (D4) comprises widespread north-trending strike-slip dextral faulting of Roper Group, coupled with N-S directed thrusting across the Urapunga Fault Zone and Murphy Inlier This is accompanied by late dextral reactivation of NNW to NNE-trending faults in the Walker and Batten Fault Zones.

DURING the four years, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, China produced the following quantities of non-ferrous metals and ores: Antimony Products - 67,869 (long) tons. The production for 1925 was 20,869 tons, of which 80% was regulus, 14% crude,and 6% oxide.Arsenic (White) - 4200 tons. The production for 1925 was 1200 tons, but only 90 tons were exported, some 25% of which to Hong-Kong, France, and U.S.A. each, and the rest in small lots to other countries. Domestic consumption was 1110 tons, and thelocal price for "cake" was around £47 per ton on 1925 exchange.Arsenic Ore (Realgar) - 1400 tons.Lead Ore (Galena) - 44,853 tons. The production for 1925 was 10,853 tons, of which 16%, produced in Korea, went to Japan, and 84% produced in Hunan, went to Europe.Manganese Ore (Pyrolusite) - 142,567 tons. The production for 1925 was 42,567 tons, of which 94.3% went to Japan.Tin Ingot - 33,480 tons. In 1925 the exports to Hong-Kong were 8880 tons of usual rough tin of 94% to 96%. Most of this was refined to No. I Chinese quality of 99.3% and exported to U.S.A. and Europe, owing to the good price ruling.Sulphur - 12,000 tons. Sulphur is included in this list in order to explain how its production led to the discovery of some other ores.Wolfram - 19,668 tons. The production in 1925 was 5868 tons, most of which came from the Quee Mee mountain district in South Kiangsi, from the detrital deposits. Civil disturbances prevented the usual output from Hunan border.Zinc Ore (Blende) - 134,190 tons. Exports for 1925 were 34,190 tons of low-grade ore, averaging 30% zinc, 14% lead, and 7% silver...

A novel explosive formulation that substitutes the use of ammonium nitrate (AN) with hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the main oxidising agent has been developed and tested as part of an Australian Coal Industry Research Program (ACARP) project. The main objective was to provide a step-change solution that has the potential to completely eliminate NOx fumes in blasting. The development of this HP/fuel-based explosive started with a comprehensive detonation characterisation program, consisting of unconfined velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements of samples at different diameters, densities and void sensitisation techniques. VOD results showed that the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures behaved similarly to non-ideal commercial explosives; in that way mixtures could be tailored to achieve specific detonation performance targets. The next stage of testing in this development involved preliminary confined tests to evaluate the rock breakage potential of the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. Fully instrumented single-hole tests were conducted in a limestone quarry. Results from these preliminary trials confirmed the rock breakage performance of HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. The confined VOD measured in one of the tests was 5100 m/s in a 102 mm diameter blasthole at a density of 0.96 g/ml. The corresponding borehole pressure measurement of this HP charge was 2.61 GPa with a detonation temperature of 2921°C. Based on near-field accelerations, both HP and ANFO charges displayed similar attenuation characteristics in the test conditions. Post-blast observations indicated that the breakage performance of the HP mixtures clearly reflected the in-hole detonation performance measurements obtained, confirming the ability of these explosive mixtures to both fragment and effectively displace the rock mass under evaluation. Further research work continues with the future commissioning of a prototype mixing and delivery unit, the successful completion and analysis of data from multiple-hole trials, and further characterisation work associated with product stability, reliability and performance under different geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Onederra, I and Araos, M, 2015. This paper provides a brief historical background to the approximately 12-year project that led to the revision of rope selection factors in the South African regulations, thus providing the ability to hoist economical payloads from single lift ultra-deep shafts. The efforts over the past 20 years have led to the revision of the legislation pertaining to rope selection factors, the redesign of rope constructions to meet the required duties associated with ultra-deep shafts, codes of practice for the design, operation and maintenance of winding plants, and a code of practice for the condition assessment of winder ropes. As a consequence the Moab Khotsong ultra-deep hoisting system could be developed and installed, with the assurance of predictable performance. Access to deep orebodies by means of single lift, ultra-deep shafts has a critical impact on the life cycle costs and efficiencies of ultra-deep mining complexes. A brief description of the main components of the hoisting system at Moab Khotsong is presented. An in-depth review of the development process applied to ensure a stable, safe and cost-effective rope construction for the ultra-deep Moab Khotsong shaft follows. The paper concludes with an overview of the experiences gained during the installation and commissioning phases of the winder, as well as operational and maintenance issues.

This paper outlines the feasibility assessment conducted to explore the possibility of constructing two submarine water supply pipelines beneath the Ma Wan Channel in Hong Kong using either horizontal directional drilling or tunnelling. The Ma Wan Channel is a major shipping channel in the Northwest New Territories, which separates Ma Wan Island from the mainland. The challenges faced by the projectÆs designers included space limitations on either side of the channel, marine department restrictions on construction activity within the channel and selection of a suitable crossing alignment and profile given the channelÆs depth, irregular sea floor topography and complex geology. The existing geological information indicated the proposed alignment would cross granitic and volcanic formations, which would likely be faulted. The primary concerns with horizontal directional drilling were:the length, diameter and depth of the crossing were at the limit of precedent experience in rock; the lack of available space at both the entry and exit sites; and whether the technique would be flexible enough to cope with the anticipated range of ground conditions. The primary concerns for tunnelling were: the possibility of encountering large inflows of high pressure groundwater; andthe possibility of encountering disturbed ground within the fault zones which could flow if not properly treated. As a means to evaluate and mitigate these technical risks for both construction options, a directionally drilled pilot hole was used to investigate the ground conditions along the proposed pipeline alignment. The pilot hole results indicated that either directional drilling or a closed face TBM drive were technically feasible crossing options at a crossing depth of 80 m. The results also indicated that either an open face TBM or a drill blast drive would need to be constructed at much greater depth because of the presence of highly permeable, disturbed ground in mid-channel at this crossing elevation.

The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by June 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised longwall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.
