City Resources Limited selected Vanuatu as a target area for epithermal gold mineralization because of its relatively unexplored character and its location on the southwest Pacific rim. During 1985 a systematic program of reconnaissance prospecting was completed on six islands within the Vanuatu group, using a helicopter and a specially designed exploration support vessel with on-board assay laboratory. Within a period of 4 months, reconnaissance prospecting of all six islands was completed, two previously unknown epithermal gold provinces had been discovered, and six major prospects warranting detailed exploration had been identified. Factors which contributed to the success of the program include (i) a flexible management approach, (ii) the mobility and access provided by the support vessel/helicopter combination, (iii) rapid assay turn-around, and (iv) adherence to basic prospecting techniques. The relative merits of various sampling media are discussed.

More than 200 bursts in coal occurred at Leichhardt Colliery prior to December 1978 during mine development in the 6 m thick Gemini seam at depths approximating 400 m. Three large bursts each displaced more than 300 tonnes of coal and stone. Two of these which occurred in continuous miner developments, are described and compared. Geological settings, mining strains including induced cleavage and roof failures associated with bursts are described. A shotfiring technique replaced mechanised mining following a major incident at the colliery. Present mining procedures, the apparent improvement in stability of workings and ongoing geotechnical monitoring programme are discussed.

Universal Resources Ltd has acquired a large portfolio of high quality exploration projects in two of Australia's most prospective regions for base and precious metal exploration: the Mt Isa Inlier (the Mt Isa-Cloncurry area) of North West Queensland, and the southern Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales. Drilling techniques commonly employed by the company for mineral exploration include diamond core drilling, air core drilling, reverse circulation (RC) drilling, and rotary air blast (RAB) drilling. Using examples from these two regions, each drilling technique is briefly described and compared, with particular reference to the specific advantages and disadvantages of each method for: sampling size, sample representivity, recovery, integrity and potential contamination. The applicability and implications of the different drilling techniques described for subsequent mineralogical and metallurgical evaluation work are discussed.

Prior to exploitation, the feasibility of mining and recovering ore can usually be determined to a satisfactory level of uncertainty by the consideration of conceptual scenarios, using a range of reasonable parameter values. Such values are selected on experience, knowledge of other mining operations, and the characteristics of the particular deposit being considered. Having established such feasibility, it is usually considerably more demanding to determine what the optimum set of parameters might be. Yet many decisions taken at the feasibility stage represent commitments extending at least into the medium term.

Australia has, and faces, a growing problem with regard to the ability to meet the demand for liquid fuels from indigenous petroleum resources. The position for natural gas is better but there is no room for complacency. Since the coal resources are relatively extensive, interest in the prospect of producing liquid fuels from coal is in- creasing. The approaches to the production of gaseous and liquid fuels are briefly reviewed and the present status of coal conversion technology is discussed. Many problems remain to be solved and it is estimated (in the USA) that another 8-10 years will be required before any of the processes for liquid fuel production are considered sufficiently efficient and viable to go to a demonstration plant. Coals represent complex feedstocks and the effects of variations in coal properties on oil-from-coal processes are not fully understood. The thermal efficiencies of various coal conversion processes are considered in relation to their impact on coal requirements. The production of Australia's present requirement for liquid fuels by the only commercial process in operation would require a four-fold expansion in the local consumption of coal. Any assessment of the suitability of oil-from-coal processes currently under development overseas for Austra- lian coals and requirements must take heed of the differences in coal properties and motivation. The economic via- bility of processes for producing oil from coal will continue to be uncertain because of the large difference between the World price for crude oil and the actual production cost.

This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

Excavation through fill material in underground metalliferous mines is usually avoided where possible, unlike in Civil Engineering application where excavation through soft ground is normally a matter of course. In the mining situation, where excavation is normally for access only, then excavation designs are engineered for mining in hard rock, except where previous lack of forward planning has made such excavation inevitable or a mining strategy sequence necessitates some mining through fill in order to achieve optimum recovery of ore. Historically, this has been the case, because of the lack of knowledge of the support characteristics of the fill material placed underground and the lack of knowledge of the composition of the fill material as placed. The expertise and experience available from mechanised excavation techniques in Civil Engineering application (shield jacking, forepoling, spiling, and soft tunnel boring, to name a few) are available for application to the underground mining situation if the need ever arises. The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

Samples of limestone and micaceous hematite have been ground in a laboratory batch mill using equal weights of either rods or balls. Values of the Schuhmann distribution modulus, a, have been shown to depend on grind time and do not remain constant as often reported. The linear reduction in a with grind time was attributed to a change in grinding mechanisms with time. The product sizing from ball milling limestone showed a bimodal distribution, but rod milling produced a unimodal size distribution. The product sizing from milling micaceous hematite was difficult to interpret due to the major influence of the shape factor on the transition from screen sizing to cyclosizing.

Developed and built in 1982 for simultaneous bathy-metric and reflectivity mapping of the deep ocean by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, SeaMARC II was a breakthrough in sea-floor mapping technology. The design was developed cooperatively by industry and academia, and the system has served as a prototype for a new generation of mapping tools for operation in both shallow and deep water.Research programs using the SeaMARC II system have focussed on basic research into the geophysical evo-lution of the Pacific, ranging from intra-atoll mapping to surveys of the deep-sea trenches. During the past few years most work has been concentrated on detailed investigations of the morphology of mid-ocean spread-ing centers, seamounts, and the subduction zones which surround the Pacific. The detail provided by the high resolution, 10-km wide side-scan sonar images of fault and fold structures, combined with the swath of bathy-metric information obtained simultaneously, allow previ-ously unattainable analysis of seafloor morphology and are leading to development of detailed models for ocean crust genesis and deformation.

At Hilton Mine, 18 kilometres north of Mount Isa, the silver-lead-zinc sulphide bodies have undergone strong deformation in the form of folding and later faulting and brecciation in the hangingwall region of the mine. Variation in grades and widths over compara- tively short distances causes problems regarding accurate sampling of orebody exposures in underground development, and in defining confidence limits for the extrapolation of ore intersections in ore reserve calculations. The paper gives a preliminary insight into the problem of obtaining representative samples for exposed orebodies and discusses the sampling techniques employed. Results gained from these sampling methods could not be verified due to lack of individual bulk samples for comparison but strong evidence for precision was provided. Addressing these challenges, this research explores the application of modern digital principles to the mining industry through the Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0). RAMI 4.0 offers a robust framework that integrates digital and physical systems, promoting data transparency, interoperability, and decentralised decision-making. This study aims to briefly introduced framework designed for the unique challenges of mining operations, leveraging the latest digital technologies. The lack of standardisation in the mining sector highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle issues such as interoperability, scalability, security, safety, and repeatability. Establishing standard procedures can ensure smooth interaction between connected devices, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency in the growing IoT ecosystem within the mining industry. Introducing a well-defined reference architecture like RAMI 4.0 can streamline management processes and improve operational efficiency in mining. By adopting this framework, the mining industry can effectively navigate the challenges of digital transformation, leading to a more connected and resilient future. The study concludes that RAMI 4.0, with its structured approach, can significantly enhance the efficiency and productivity of mineral processing operations, fostering sustainable growth in a digitally driven industrial landscape.

Geotechnical investictations and monitoring have been integral to development of the Porgera Gold Mine. The steep, unstable terrain has required a program for monitoring of slopes and foundations which includes survey stations, borehole inclinometers and piezometers. Case studies of the Maip Pass landslide, Yakatabari land-slide, Anawe Plant Site CIP pond excavation and batter, and a load test study for mine waste dumps are presented.Monitoring is needed to ensure that geotechnical risk is kept to a minimum. A vigilant program will be required for the life of the mine.

The excavation for the Sydney Opera House Parking Station comprises a large donut shaped underground cavern with a central sandstone pillar. The maximum effective roof span is about 19 m and the rock cover is between 7 m and 8 m. Permanent support for the roof and the various services tunnels consists of a combination of tensioned anchors, and untensioned dowels, and mesh with shortcrete and fibrecrete as the final lining. Steel sets were installed at main intersections.Fundamental to the design philosophy for excavation of these spans at such shallow rock cover was the use of monitoring to check on the adequacy of the installed support. Prior to excavation, extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers and surface settlement survey stations were installed. Underground survey stations, anchor load cells and shotcrete pressure cells were installed as excavation proceeded. Excavation commenced at the crown using an initial heading and three widening stages. Geological mapping during excavation confirmed borehole expectations, namely sandstone beds 1 to 4 m thick interbedded with thin shale units. Bedding plane contacts varied over short distances from tight partings to thick brecciated seams. Jointing was subvertical and joints tended to be bed-limited.

Electrochemical polarisation techniques can be successively applied to maintain clean surfaces in process environments. The applications are the result of extensive knowledge of the electrochemical nature of process environments, an innovative approach to problem solving and shared æcan doÆ attitudes between the supplier and process owner. Initial identification of suitable applications is based on over 20 years of process and electrochemical experience. The technologies discussed in this paper include Electrochemical Anti-Scaling [EAS], Electrochemical Protection Systems with both anodic [EPSA] and cathodic [EPSC] protection and Electrochemical Flocculation [EF]. Examples of industrial applications are reviewed. Good examples of metallurgical processes which can benefit greatly from an advanced electrochemical treatment are the wet processes involving precipitation, crystallisation and evaporation. Eliminating corrosion and scaling which would otherwise cause process disruptions and quality problems can make a big difference in process profitability. Clear advantages in both cost efficiency and environment friendliness are easily demonstrated. Continuous processing with minimum downtime is one clear advantage. In comparison to the use of corrosion inhibitors, anti-scaling agents and flocculants, the electrochemical polarisation does not increase the environmental load from the process as no additives of any kind are used. In most cases the cost benefits from pro-actively keeping surfaces clean with the help of advanced electrochemistry are substantial when compared to traditional re-active methods and other active treatments.

Horizontal perforated-plate baffles were shown to improve the cleaning efficiency of a flotation column when processing coal from two sources. The baffles consisted of flat plates with holes large enough to avoid plugging problems, and they improved the washing efficiency by making the flow patterns in the column closely approach plug flow. Tests with varying amounts of baffle open area showed that the optimum was between 30 and 40 per cent open area, which effectively prevented backmixing without seriously reducing capacity. The baffled column had previously been tested under ideal conditions with good results (87 per cent pyrite rejection at 85 per cent combustiles recovery), and so the tests reported here were intentionally run with difficult-to-float coals to determine the benefits of baffling under adverse conditions. For an original coal feed containing 38 per cent ash and 3.23 per cent total sulphur, the baffled column could recover 84 per cent of the combustibles while rejecting 84 per cent of the ash and approximately 54 per cent of the pyritic sulphur. Without baffles, the column recovered 88 per cent of the combustibles while rejecting only 76 per cent of the ash and 45 per cent of the pyritic sulphur. Subsequent tests with a dye tracer showed that the baffles reduced entrainment by approximately a factor of five, while the recovery was reduced by only a few per cent. Overall, the loss of capacity due to the baffles was more than offset by the improvement in product quality.

Mines are often located in remote areas that are not well served by æstiffÆ power grids. Radial transmission networks, high lightning incidence (eg in South Africa the Witwatersrand experiences seven to ten strikes/km2 per year), low short circuit strengths and diesel generation are not uncommon. All these factors result in the electric power supply to many mines being unusually prone to dips and disturbances. æLegacyÆ winder drives û cyclo converters and dc drives û convert power directly from the supply to the motor, with no intermediate energy storage element. Further, they rely on the supply network for commutation and are therefore sensitive to supply voltage disturbances. There is a high probability that a dc or cyclo mine winder will trip during a supply disturbance, often resulting in lost production time and call-outs for technical staff to reset or even repair equipment. In contrast, a voltage source inverter (VSI) ac drive stores a large quantity of energy (in the dc link capacitors) and is fully self-commutating. Hence, this topology is inherently more immune to supply voltage disturbances. Indeed, vendors of ac VSI mine winders make general statements about the superior performance of their drives during supply disturbances. However, the advantages have apparently not been previously quantified. This paper compares different winder drive topologies and their sensitivity to supply disturbances, considers categories of supply disturbances and quantifies the cost of the effects on the different drive types.

The rocks of the Serranias Chilla massif of Bolivia are a suite of metamorphosed Palaeozoic basalts and associated continental sediments. Whole-rock trace element geochemistry of the basalts suggest a calc-alkaline affinity and indicate that subduction extended as far north as the Bolivian Altiplano during lower Palaeozoic time.
