Polycrystalline and surface complexes (at synthetic sphalerite, ZnS, and galena, PbS) of zinc(II) and lead(II) ions with eight different O,OÆ-dialkyldithiophosphate (Dtph) substances have been prepared and comparatively studied by means of 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The 31P resonances have been assigned to dithiophosphate groups with terminal S,SÆ-chelating or bridging coordinations in the mono-, bi-, tetra- and polynuclear complexes respectively. The bridging coordination of two neighbouring zinc(II) ions by O,OÆ-dialkyldithio-phosphate ligands was established at the surface of synthetic sphalerite.The adsorption mechanism of dialkyldithiophosphate on synthetic galena includes formation of a surface complex as well as surface precipitation. Principally different coordination modes of the reagent were discovered at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite (ie terminal S,SÆ-chelating coordination to the lead atom).Derivatives of monothiophosphoric and phosphoric acids were displayed as hydrolysis products of dialkyldithiophosphates at synthetic PbS.

"A personal account of my journey from a student from suburban Melbourne in the 1970s through 40 odd years in and around the mining industry including the important events that have moulded my thinking and, as result, have formed the guiding principles of the mining contracting business and related entities that make up the Byrnecut Group. On reflection the game of chance has played a big part in the journey, from the selection of initial study based on my parents financial capability and the one and only offer of early employment by Western Mining Corporation where the formative phase of my career took place in what was the vibrant can do environment that existed in Kambalda in the 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequently the unplanned meeting with Frank Lubbock drawing me back to Kalgoorlie from Fiji in 1987 and the resultant formation of a private mining contracting business, the excitement of the mid 1980s Kalgoorlie mining environment followed by the turmoil of the 1987 stock market crash where business survival was the game, resulting in a relationship with the German based Thyssen Group.Thereafter the development of a large privately owned international multifaceted mining services group and the principles behind that growth. These include: development of strategic personnel and retention of those personnel cashflow management and debt within a private company scenario recognising opportunity for synergetic growth but insisting on market forces driving those business elements, as opposed to internal divisions group-wide sustainable business systems, particularly in relation to leading safety and training processes innovation and renewal to provide the elusive advantage in a competitive market the role of entrepreneurial small businesses in development of technology.The above principles combine to make a margin in a cut throat contracting environment, competing on the world stage against other contractors and owner mining options.CITATION:Coughlan, S, 2014. The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

Hilton deposit comprises en-echelon silver-lead-zinc orebodies with reserves in excess of 50 million tonnes. The host rock to the ore is a dolomitic and pyritic shale/siltstone which dips steeply west. The shale/siltstone is deeply leached and porous, particularly over the Ore Zone where the depth of leaching continues down to 440 m below surface, and constitutes an extensive permeable aquifer system containing a large volume of saline acidic groundwater. Initial production commenced at Hilton in 1987 well below the aquifer. A dedicated dewatering and monitoring programme is in place to ensure security of stoping operations and allow extraction of ore close to the leached zone in future years. Dewatering is undertaken from controlled bores from underground sites. Mine groundwater discharge is presently at the rate of 4000 kl/day with plans to increase to 8000 kl/day. An additional 2000 kl/day of fill and service water and water from secondary aquifers is also pumped from the mine daily. Although recharge rate to the aquifer is minimal, studies indicate that due to the size of the aquifer and future extensions to mine development, dewatering will be a life of mine activity. The investigations which have been undertaken to determine optimum dewatering techniques and schedules are described. These include production bore tests, mine planning constraints and computer aquifer modelling. Gravity geophysical techniques have been successful in delineating the lateral and vertical disposition of the aquifer. The mine dewatering schedule, whose principal component is underground mine drainage, is also outlined.

Recent analysis of backfilling material has shown that a finer size distribution is preferable for stope filling. In order to increase crusher throughput and pit productivity, a reassessment of the quarrying operation was conducted. Part of that reassessment was a review of blasting practice. Six means of reducing the average muckpile fragment size were examined. Different blast initiation and charging options were compared, and patterns using smaller hole sizes were designed, analysed with the JKMRC 3x3o software, then drilled and fired. The ground vibration and face movement was recorded and compared. To determine whether the Kuz-Ram model could be used in an economic analysis of the quarry operation, the fragmentation distribution of the small diameter hole blasts was determined. Photographs of the muckpiles were taken and digitised. However subsequent analysis indicated that a satisfactorily large photo sample was only obtained from the smallest diameter hole blast. The Kuz-Ram fragmentation model prediction was found to be within the confidence limits of those results. An engineering and cost comparison between the blasts was made.

Australia has been slow in adopting the use of underground space as a part of our urban planning process. Australia has one of the highest levels of tunnel advance per capita per annum in the world, yet the use of underground space in our cities appears difficult for our planners and politicians to comprehend, not withstanding the general availability of good quality rock and contractor expertise in Australia. However, the lack of space in our urban areas is being highlighted as our major cities expand outwards and people and businesses gravitate towards city centres. Typical potential underground space uses include car parking, self-storage and archiving facilities, water storage, underground quarrying, small industrial facilities and another layer of traffic (electric and fuel cell) and services network. Historically, blasting in high density population areas has resulted in blast vibrations and blast overpressures exceeding the limits, which in some case have been set extremely low in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). This makes conventional blasting difficult, often requiring low charge weights per delay and associated small blast sizes and slow advance rates. However, the introduction of new technologies, such as computer aided drilling, electronic delays and low-energy explosives has made this task considerably easier. Although more expensive than conventional blasting, excavation by blasting using these products and technologies in relatively good quality ground is believed, in most cases, to be less than the cost of mechanical excavation. In this paper, the authors look at innovative trends in underground quarrying, underground commercial space and tunnelling and put forward their concept of future excavation demand, future product requirements and technical specifications to the drill and blast community.

The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). The amount of material extracted from each blasted ring in sublevel caving mines is vital when deciding the overall mine production target. The orientation of the production drifts is normally perpendicular to the strike of the orebody, and rings are blasted from the hanging wall side to the footwall side in a retreating manner. For an inclined orebody, a given ring will contain different amounts of material based on its relative position along the production drift. This layout creates a distinctive problem with respect to the extraction ratio optimisation along the axis of the production drift. This paper describes the current drawpoint control strategy practiced at LKAB and presents the variation of drawpoint performance parameters along the production drifts. It uses automatically generated data from a bucket weighing system that measures tonnage drawn per bucket, and it classifies the blasted rings into four zones based on their relative position along the production drift. It considers the loading procedure for blasted rings at Kiirunavaara mine and analyses the variations in drawpoint performance along the production drift. Concentrates produced from MnO2 and Fe203 ore fines have been targeted as potential feedstocks for direct metallurgical processing. Prereduction of pyrolusite-rich Mn02 sands to MnO has been investigated in batch and continuous experimental bubbling fluidised beds using CO-H2 reducing gas mixtures. This process has been found to produce a high grade feedstock suitable for smelting to ferroalloys or acid digestion for chemicals production. Similarly, production of highly metallised direct reduced iron (DRI) from hematite ore fines has also been investigated in batch bubbling bed reactors. Programs to characterise the reduction kinetics, fluidisation behaviour and defluidisation phenomena for both feedstocks are currently in progress to enable optimum process conditions to be determined.

Equilibrium in the reaction H2(g) + [%0] (in liquid copper) = H2O (g) was investigated at temperatures between 1200 -and 1350°C with p(H2Oj/p(H2) ratios between 1 to 15. A semi-microbalance was used for direct measurement of dissolved oxygen in molten copper. Oxygen was found to obey Henry's law under the experimental conditions used. The rapid crushing technique for the measurement of gas content of coal consists of accelerating the rate of gas desorption from coal by crushing. This technique allows the determination of gas content in the space of hours rather than days or weeks as required for the traditional slow desorption technique. The crushing technique is used particularly when gas content determinations are urgently required for mine safety purposes. The method is now routinely used in underground coal mines of NSW and to a lesser extent in QLD. Despite the rapidity and efficiency of this method, concerns have been raised upon the reliability of the method to deliver accurate results. Experience in Australia has shown that there is in fact some discrepancy in results between gas laboratories using the rapid crush technique. The development of rapid crushing techniques for seam gas content measurements in Australia and the main causes of variability in the gas content test results were investigated. The gas laboratories participating in the gas content testing were CSIRO Division of Coal and Energy, BHP Technical Services and GeoGas Pty. Ltd.

This paper serves to outline the circumstances and causes of the air-blast that occurred at Northparkes Mines in November 1999. It describes the design of the mine, the geotechnical issues surrounding cave propagation and the cave monitoring systems that were in place prior to the event. A short description of the air-blast that followed a sudden collapse is given. Details of the risk assessment process that evolved during the rectification process are provided with their subsequent modification to form the core of a major hazard monitoring process. The system is in line with the recommendations given by the Coroner resulting from the inquest into the deaths of the four people who lost their lives during the air-blast.

An important problem in rock engineering is to control the properties of artificial rock. A compaction technique for casting artificial rock specimens with controlled properties is described, i.e. using a compression-testing machine to compress the mixture. Uniform density is necessary to achieve uniformity of properties of the specimens, and uniform density can be obtained by using the specific pressing method presented. Rebound and borax content are important to the technique and have been studied as well.

The Ebor Volcano in northeastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19-20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2-19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (-48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at -19.0-19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichment of SiO2, F,FeO/MgO, alkalies and HFSE.

Ballarat Goldfields NL is developing an exploration decline at Ballarat East using a Mitsui Miike S-125 roadheader. To-date, 530 in of advance has been achieved at an average rate of 16.1 m/week. Roadheader availability has averaged 94.3 per cent, and pick consumption has averaged 0.016 per m. Ground support has involved pattern rockbolting with split sets, 100 mm thick fibre reinforced shotcrete, and steel sets as required. The slower than expected advance rate has mainly been due to difficult ground conditions. It is expected that a further 970 in of decline will be mechanically excavated before a drill and blast system becomes more economical.

The successful `marriage' between a company seeking to raise funds to develop a project and their financiers calls for a strong mutual understanding of each other's needs. For a company attempting to raise funding, the alternative methods are ever expanding. The optimum method will vary depending on the financial position, risk/reward outlook of the company and the strength of the project for which development capital is being sought. It is likely that small mining companies will need to raise equity funds for advancing projects to the development stage. At that time, they will probably still require a reasonable level of shareholder equity to meet the requirements of banks and other parties to cover potential cost over-runs on the project and feasibility costs. Larger companies, however, are likely to find it much easier and cheaper to raise debt from banks. When evaluating companies and projects for funding, banks will pay particular attention to the quality and experience of management in developing similar projects and it may be necessary for some companies to retain the services of outside consultants. Before a project needs funding, companies should meet with potential financiers to develop relationships to select and ensure a smooth transaction to funding in the future.

GHD-Black & Veatch (GHD-BV) have completed design and specification of the ash thickening plant at Tarong Power Station, including operation of a pilot plant. Construction of the plant is in progress and commissioning is planned for early-2004. The objective of the new plant is to convert the low concentration (lean phase) ash slurry currently generated by the power station into concentrated slurry which will then be pumped to the existing ash dam. Water recovered from the lean slurry will be returned to the power station for reuse. The drivers behind this project are to extend the life of the ash dam and to reduce water pumping costs. A maximum flow of 1000 litres per second is expected in the thickening plant. The process involves a screening phase, which removes large material that could cause blockages or equipment damage. A 50 metre diameter thickener then concentrates the screened lean ash slurry to 55 - 60 per cent w/w solids. In addition, the thickener plant will allow the harvesting of floating cenospheres (hollow, spherical ash particles) from the lean slurry. Cenospheres are currently collected from the surface of the ash dam and drained on a pad adjacent to the dam. The new system will use a surface skimmer to remove the cenospheres from the thickener and transfer them to settling ponds for further classification. The settling ponds simulate the detention on the existing ash dam, and allow entrained fine ash and slow settling cenospheres time to settle. As settling occurs in ponds, the slow settling cenospheres can be completely recovered whereas when they settle in the dam, the opportunity for recovery is lost. Cenospheres are a valuable by-product produced during the combustion process, and recycling of this material reduces the waste generated by the power station. Water recovered from the thickener drains to a three megalitre reservoir. Water is drawn from the reservoir for thickener plant service water and various other uses in the power station. The bulk of the water is used to sluice ash from the power station to the thickening plant. In the current configuration, surface water from the ash dam is reused but must be pumped several kilometres back up to the power station. The dam also holds an inventory of several thousand megalitres of water and has significant evaporative losses. Therefore the current raw water make up demand is substantial. In addition, some areas of the power station traditionally using raw water will be modified as part of this project to allow the use of recovered water, further reducing the raw water demand. The design incorporates many features of sustainable water management. By more effectively recovering water from the lean ash slurry, the amount of raw water make up required by the system will be significantly reduced. This method of water recovery provides a more sustainable and energy efficient ash-transport mechanism.

New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.
