Equipment wear is strongly related to the performance of grinding circuits. In particular, SAG mills are subjected to the wear of their shell liners and grates. Changes in lifter height and face angle impact mill performance, while classification at the mill discharge is also affected as grates wear out. Moreover, liner mass loss caused by wear affects how operators interpret readings of sensors such as load cells or bearings pressure. Automating and optimising grinding circuits under these constrain becomes challenging due to the nonlinear and dynamic nature of the system. The operation of SAG mill grinding circuits remains largely dependent on human intervention, which frequently results in inconsistencies in performance across shifts, reflecting the operator’s personal preferences, experience, and other human factors. The influence of human factors can be reduced by careful training of operators as well as by automation using advanced supervisory control. The latter approaches could benefit from the development of dynamic process models that consider the effects of wear on the performance of equipment over time. This paper presents detailed industrial data showing the effects of wear on SAG mill performance. Additionally, a dynamic SAG mill model that accounts for these phenomena is proposed and demonstrated in a simulated environment. This model is shown to mimic the effect of wear on the performance of industrial scale mills and the operational constraints they are subject to, thus extending traditional SAG mill models. Incorporating wear into modelling and simulation platforms can improve the understanding of the effects that wear can have on the performance of key assets in comminution circuits and may allow the development of more robust model-based advanced process control strategies.

This paper reports on the implementation of the critical control concept to manage material risks in the mining and metals industries. The critical control management (CCM) approach assumes it is better to identify weaknesses in risk controls before an incident happens as opposed to discovering weaknesses from an investigation after an incident occurs. The first is sometimes referred to as active monitoring and the second as reactive monitoring (Health and Safety Executive and Chemical Industries Association, 2006). Both are needed. However, whilst methods for both active and reactive monitoring of risk controls are well established in many high hazard industries, such as oil and gas, petroleum and chemical industries, until the publication in 2015 of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) guides, (Good Practice Guide and the subsequent Implementation Guide) (ICMM, 2015), there was no specific mining and metals industry guidance on critical control management. This paper reports on progress in implementing the ICMM guidance drawing on two main sources. First, a benchmarking survey of a representative sample of coal and metalliferous mines, both underground and open cut/pit), sponsored jointly by the Queensland Resources Council and the Queensland Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health in the context of a recommendation that the Queensland mining industry adopts high reliability organisation (HRO) principals (Queensland Resources Council and Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health, 2022). Second, it draws on Noetic’s experience of implementing critical control management in mining and other high hazard industries in Australia, Africa, China and North America (Wilkinson, 2018). The paper describes good practices found and where significant improvements can be made, providing specific and actionable examples of both. From this it also identifies how future guidance on this topic could be improved.

As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden.3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families.It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities. Such knowledge can be used for future blasts in the same domain to increase long-term operational efficiency through slight modifications in drill pattern and initiation design.CITATION:Beyglou, A, Schunnesson, H, Johansson, D and Johansson, N, 2015. The formation of magmatic oxide ore deposits hosted in chemically-evolved layered gabbroic intrusions is attributed to a variety of petrological processes, but there is little to no consensus on the general applicability of each model. Complicating the matter further is that many layered gabbroic intrusions are spatially and temporally associated with alkaline A-type granites, suggesting that there is a petrogenetic relationship between the two types of chemically different rocks. Our experimental results show that petrological modelling using a starting composition of high-Ti basalt from the Emeishan large igneous province can produce evolved silicic liquids that resemble the compositions of microgranular enclaves from the syenitic unit of the bimodal, oxide ore-bearing Baima igneous complex. The experimental results confirm that bimodal gabbro-granitoid complexes can form from a common parental magma and that early crystallisation of Ti-rich magnetite can explain the formation of the oxide ore deposits in the lower parts of the layered gabbroic intrusions. We conclude that crystallisation of a typical high-Ti basaltic parental magma can produce world-class giant magmatic oxide ore deposits and that the occurrence of some alkaline granites may be an indicator of their presence.CITATION:Shellnutt, J G, Hsia, T W-Y, Liu, T-C and Iizuka, Y, 2015. For Australian mining projects, sustainable groundwater use is typically defined as a groundwater extraction regime, measured over a specified planning time frame, which allows acceptable levels of stress and protects dependent economic, social and environmental values (DEH, 2004). This principle is compatible with most stakeholdersÆ understanding of our national environmental objectives, yet the application of this policy on a project-specific scale is not always straightforward. Three examples of sustainability issues in the management of groundwater in mining are presented. These examples highlight each of the three dependent values: environmental, economic and social.

After a short presentation of the Division of Mining at the Royal Insti- tute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, the author presents some of-the fill research carried out at the Division. Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants' in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. Finally compressibility investi- gations and some finite element calcu- lations are presented.

The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and -geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (T¦ of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus T. data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCI and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO 2' as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %o and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4% . Calculated d8Ow.½ values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from - 2.0 to -5.7%c , with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.

Productivity and fuel consumption of the blast furnace is driven by the quality of the iron ore sinter, which in turn is related to the sinter mineralogy. The sintering conditions including temperature and gas composition have a significant influence on the formation of melt and finally the mineralogy of the sinter. In this work, analogue sinter tablets were produced from iron ore fines in a laboratory furnace with tightly controlled temperature profile and oxygen partial pressure in the gas. The mineralogy of the sinters was analysed using reflected light microscopy. The results showed that increasing thermal enclosed area (area enclosed by heating and cooling curve above a reference temperature) reduces primary hematite and platy silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) contents. This is attributed to increasing melt formation, leading to greater assimilation of the iron ore particles. Lower magnetite was found for tablets with greater median pore size, which is thought to be due to greater oxidation of magnetite to hematite during cooling in air. It was also found that higher alumina content was found to result in more SFCA formation under the same heating/cooling conditions, whereas tablets with higher goethite had higher assimilation and produced more secondary hematite on cooling. Finally, it is necessary to relate the enclosed area to the temperature at which the melt formation becomes significant which strongly depends on chemical composition of the ore studied.

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. Chlorination of organic matter by direct injection of chlorine gas or hypochlorite has been investigated metallurgically worldwide with little understanding of the basic chemistry of the passivation mechanisms in- volved. In this paper, chlorination of carbon is attributed to oxidation-reduc- tions, resulting in surface halogenation of graphitic or amorphous carbon. It is proposed that chlorine and carbon interact to form thin coatings of chioro-carbon complexes that block the adsorption of gold cyanide com- plexes, thus passivating the gold adsorption sites of carbonaceous matter. Analytical, spectrographic, microscopic and electron-optical methods have been applied to demonstrate the proposed mechanism of chlorine-carbon bonding, as well as to evaluate the advantages and limitations of chlorination in the pretreatment of refractory carbonaceous gold ores.

For many mining operations the challenge of equalling World Best Practices has become the key motivator for increasing mine productivities and for lowering total costs. In most instances this will only be achieved if mines optimise their total system rather than minimising specific costs within unit operations. In the past, drilling and blasting have been viewed as a cost to be minimised rather than operations which should have their impacts fully leveraged. Once a hardrock orebody is defined the activity which has the most substantial impact in determining the efficiency of a mining operation is the blasting. The output from a blast affects every downstream operation; only by understanding the extent and interactions can the mine be optimised. Substantial improvements to hardrock mining, quarrying and excavation operations are achievable. Instead of seeking the regular one to three per cent improvements based on reduction of consumables, mine operators would be well advised to go for much bigger targets of ten to 30 per cent by fully leveraging the drill and blast operations.

This paper presents a review of computer techniques for the automatic contouring of geological and geophysical data with output as interactive display on graph plotters or graphics terminals and passive display on automatic drafting tables. The advantages of the method of fitting a triangulated surface to randomly distributed data using an advancing front algorithm are described, as well as the technique for determining interpolated values for the production of contour line segments and a contour smoothing algorithm. This contouring method is employed by the Geological Survey of Queensland and is implemented as an interactive system. An alternative method ideally suited to randomly distributed data involves the use of piecewise parametric cubic splines. This method which is ideal for sharp variations in magnitude and areal extent typical of geophysical anomalies is discussed. The mathematics of surface interpolation using non-parametric splines and an explicit piecewise surface fitting technique are discussed. Curve tracing techniques which are suitable for automatic contouring are also presented and the inherent advantages of interactive contouring using on-line plotters and graphics terminals for previewing of displays are described.

Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. Every person in an organisation has what could be called ‘a different take’ on what it means to be a safety leader. The directors will tell you they are ultimately responsible for everyone’s safety and that they can be imprisoned as a consequence of a workplace fatality. Managers, take more of a focused approach and would explain that they are totally responsible for the safety of their teams. And then there are front-line leaders. Those that not only have the responsibility (like directors and managers) but they also have the accountability, and the ability, to influence how safely their teams work. But it is not just physical safety that leaders should be concerned with.

A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

Recent research has highlighted the potential of a relatively new style of gold mineralisation related to granite intrusion. New discoveries in Alaska, Central Europe and Asia and Eastern Australia with total resources of 1600 t Au offer attractive targets for regional exploration in areas which may have been overlooked in the past. A spatial information system was developed to target granite-gold systems in eastern Australia and the West coast of New Zealand, using well constrained geological and exploration models derived from current research. Target areas were recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that have similar spatial data relationships to known granite gold mineralisation elsewhere in the world. The second phase of the modelling better constrained the regional scale target areas by including more detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical data in the GIS to develop prospect-scale targets and to allow the acquisition of tenements over these areas. A geological review of each target area was carried out in the field to put the GIS models into context. The fieldwork has highlighted the potential for this style of mineralisation in New Zealand and will increase investment in mineral exploration and development in New Zealand in the near future.

The general experience in gold cyanidation research activities and plant practice is that high oxygen and cyanide concentrations improve gold leaching kinetics which in turn reduce residence time and increase throughput. This paper shows how the improved pre-oxidation method for the pyrrhotite rich gold ore of Bounty Gold Mine has increased gold recoveries at lower reagent consumption rates. The installation of a pipe reactor, in conjunction with a Multi Mix Systems oxygen injector, has lowered the amount of oxygen required to achieve a dissolved oxygen level target of 20 mg/L. The improvement of the pre-oxidation stage and lead nitrate solution addition has led to a reduction in the free cyanide concentration required for leaching, resulting in a decrease in cyanide consumption rate by 36 per cent to achieve a one to two per cent improvement in the gold recovery.

The heavy media cyclones at Argyle Diamonds are subjected to extremely abrasive service conditions and have been the subject of a development program from the time the first ore was treated in the AKl processing plant. In the past ten years the cyclones have been re-engineered from a standard DSM design, in which some components would only last four days, to the current Argyle design in which the minimum component life is 175 days. Development has focused upon the elimination of turbulence in the cyclone and combating unavoidable abrasion through the use of appropriate wear materials.

The general types of industrial behaviour of liberated valuable sulfide minerals in the 0 - 10 ¦m size fraction are described and tests to explore on site at a concentrator the general nature of any deficient behaviour are discussed. In addition, the general types of behaviour of the gangue minerals in this size fraction are also described in terms of their mechanisms for recovery. These behaviours are also discussed in terms of the type of grinding device and grinding environment in which they were produced and the target grinding product size. Major recent improvements in the industrial capabilities of grinding devices are discussed.Present difficulties in characterisation of particles in the 0 - 10 ¦m range are described and desirable improvements for the future are outlined. Further, desirable improvements for industrial processing of valuable minerals in this size range are discussed along with some remedial actions.

The Olympic Dam Mine is a large, mechanised, underground operation currently producing 2.2 million tonnes-per-year of copper/uranium/gold ore. The mine is accessed via one shaft and one service decline. An additional 13 raise bored ventilation shafts have been completed to-date.Ventilation requirements are stringent in order to provide adequate dilution and removal of diesel fumes, radon gas/daughters and heat generated from both engines and wall rock.Due to the nature of the orebodies, the mine workings will continue to expand laterally necessitating the addition of at least one major surface raise every year.
