The ever increasing demand on land use has led to large areas of land being considered for development, which because of past mining activities are covered by substantial depths of fill materials. This paper examines the problem faced with the development of land infilled with open cast mining backfill, in predicting the behaviour of the fill upon development. To be able to design foundations suitable to withstand the movements that occur within open cast backfills or design a backfilling operation that produces land suitable for a proposed after development, a means of predicting backfill settlement is required. Factors critical to this prediction are the timing of backfilling operations, the compactive state of the backfill and the inundation of the backfill. The analysis of a considerable quantity of data collected from the monitoring of backfilling operations and backfill movement at a range of open cast coal sites located within the UK has given the authors a better understanding of how open cast backfills behave in terms of long-term creep settlement, collapse settlement and how these are effected by backfill scheduling. This knowledge has been encoded into a program running under Microsoft Windows that enables a user to make settlement predictions for a point, a given section or area or for the whole site. Differential settlements, critical to any development design, can also be determined between any two points taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of open cast backfills. The program was tested with data from an open cast coal site in the UK. Compaction monitoring during the placement of the backfill material enabled a model of the backfill to be constructed taking into account backfill properties and scheduling. This model, taken as input into the program, enabled future backfill settlement predictions to be made. A comparison is given between these results and actual settlements obtained from a short-term settlement monitoring scheme.

This approach follows a path of rigorous data analysis independent of discharge parameters (whether low-density slurry, paste or cake disposal) to select the most cost-effective and sustainable approach for any given material or site.

In recent decades, significant advances have improved the modelling techniques for predicting slope failure. Predicting failures is vital in open pit mining due to the significant risk posed to personnel and equipment from unstable pit walls. Failures not only cause harm and damage to people and equipment but also cause delays to production and subsequently increase operational costs. Coupled with improvements in modelling techniques, utilisation of advanced scanning systems, such as high-definition imagery from UAVs has enabled faster and more precise mapping and modelling. However, one key element required for accurate slope stability modelling and monitoring is the ability for mine geotechnical engineers to have an accurate understanding of the mineralogy and moisture content of slopes, in real-time. To address this challenge, research has been undertaken to utilise hyperspectral imaging across a broad spectrum, combined with high-definition imagery, and LiDAR to scan slopes for minerals and moisture content. In addition to accurately mapping mineralogy and moisture, the data must be collected autonomously and remotely to ensure ongoing safety. The results show that there are many direct and indirect benefits from this new technology, including the ability to monitor slopes at a safe distance and in real-time, improved accuracy of modelling, detection of risks, and improving the automation workflow for geotechnical engineers. The paper presents recommendations for the implementation of the technology in open cut mining environments.

There have been many changes in the Australian mining industry during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from a geological perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological staffing and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services. As a result, there has been a change in the way geological information is generated, managed and retained within the industry. This paper describes the changes that have taken place in the industry, provides two case studies of how companies manage their geological Intellectual Property and reviews some of the issues associated with management of in-house and outsourced geology services.

Desulfurisation of steel during ladle refining is governed by both thermodynamics and kinetics. For effective desulfurisation, thermodynamically, a low partial pressure of oxygen at the steel-slag interface and highly basic slag which possess a large sulfide capacity are desired. Kinetically, the mass transfer coefficient of sulfur in the liquid steel and in the slag determines the rate of desulfurisation. A fast desulfurisation rate is achieved by maintaining sufficiently strong argon stirring of the melt. In the present work, sulfur mass balance for steel and slag was performed after the desulfurisation treatment for several industrial heats. The decrease in the sulfur quantity of the liquid steel was more than the increase in the sulfur quantity of the slag. The discrepancy in the sulfur mass balance suggests that the sulfur could be transferred to: (a) the gas (via slag) phase; or to (b) the refractory (crucible) phase. The preliminary investigation of the refractory samples taken at slag-refractory and steel-refractory interface showed no interaction of sulfur with the refractory. Therefore, the possibility of sulfur transfer to the gas phase was verified by carrying out melting experiments of sulfur containing slag in an argon/air atmosphere. Sulfur containing slag was initially melted in an MgO-C crucible under an argon atmosphere followed by creating the air atmosphere just above the melt. Careful sampling and analysis from the cold spots of the crucible, much above the melt surface, revealed formation of a fibrous structure. Scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis of these fibrous deposits confirmed the presence of oxides and sulfides. Oxidation of sulfur containing slag under air atmosphere was also performed using a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) set-up. It showed a constant sulfur loss in the range of 1300– 1500°C. Thermodynamic calculations carried out using FactSage™ ver 8.3 for these experimental conditions are in good agreement with the observed results.

Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. A practical approach has been developed for the design of both grates and pulp lifters. It is based on: an appreciation of the process interaction between grates and pulp lifters, an interpretation of mill charge structure as it relates to discharge through grates, and an analysis of pulp and solids flow in pulp lifter channels. This approach can be used to improve the overall discharge effectiveness of AG and SAG mills.

Kriged estimates are not typically calculated on blocks substantially smaller than the sample spacing (eg the Standard Mining Unit or SMU). Moreover, the sample spacing for quality variables is often much greater than the SMU size. For short to medium term planning decisions, the shorter term variability in the quality variables is a key economic consideration in defining, setting and meeting coal product specifications.Global uncertainties can be calculated using Drill Hole Spacing Analyses (DHSA). However, knowing the precision of a variable for a one or two year production volume is usually not adequate for variables with low spatial continuity that may fluctuate significantly over daily, weekly, SMU, or shipment volumes.Is there a feasible, reasonable and valid geostatistical method to model the uncertainty of coal quality variables on blocks substantially smaller than the drill spacing (say on the SMU)?The validity of using co-kriging variances, calculated on SMUs to characterise local uncertainty, was tested using a suite of conditional simulations generated for several quality variables for BHP’s Blackwater operation. The conditional simulation results were used as a benchmark against which the results derived from the kriging variances could be compared.The agreement between the kriging and simulation methods for thickness is excellent, with much closer correlations than for the quality variables. Typically, the kriging variances give very reasonable approximations to the simulation-based uncertainties, although there could be some systematic discrepancies which may become much more critical if a classification is to be based on a thresholding of the SMUs relative uncertainties.CITATION:Mawdesley, C, Barry, D, Bertoli, O and Saha, R, 2017. Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is developing its flagship Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) facility to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates from imported high-grade nickel laterite ore for nickel-cobalt-aluminium and nickel-cobalt-manganese Li-ion batteries. The TECH facility is expected to use a patented leaching, recovery and recycling process called the DNi Process™. It uses the nitric acid leaching process for extracting nickel, cobalt and other valuable metals from laterite ore. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the TECH Project will also produce high purity alumina, hematite (~640 ktpa) and other by-products. The hematite by-product precipitated from the DNi Process™ (hematite precipitate hereafter), is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. QPM is working to identify potential applications for these high-purity by-products to generate additional revenue and to achieve its zero-waste ambition. As such, QPM has engaged CSIRO to evaluate various agglomeration options to produce low-cost, hematitic products suitable as ironmaking feed materials. This paper will first reveal the unique characteristics of the hematite precipitate arising from the TECH Project and then examine the sintering and pelletising processes for preparing the hematite precipitate as an ironmaking feed.

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history are being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations û both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage. Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point, they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history. Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The geotourism approach has allowed for positive collaboration among communities, service providers, local and government authorities to channel tourist revenues into rural communities. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost-effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products using multimedia and web sites. Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

The Hunter Valley Coal Chain (HVCC) consists of mining companies, rail operators, rail track owners and terminal operators, together forming the worldÆs largest coal exporting facility. In 2008, the throughput of HVCC was about 92 million tonnes, or more than ten per cent of the worldÆs total trade in coal for that year. The coal export operation generates around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. As demand has increased significantly in recent years, and is expected to increase further in the future, efficient supply chain management is crucial. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator Limited (HVCCC) was founded to enable integrated planning and coordination of the interests of all parties, thus improving the efficiency of the system as a whole. One of the many planning challenges faced by the HVCCC is that of annual maintenance planning. Different supply chain elements, such as trains, railway track, terminal equipment and load points, must undergo regular preventive and corrective maintenance, leading to significant reductions in system capacity (up to 15 per cent). However good alignment of the maintenance tasks can reduce their impact, and the HVCCC undertakes an annual process to ensure the impact of maintenance on the supply chain capacity is as small as possible. This is achieved in an iterative negotiation process between HVCCC and individual service providers. In the past, maintenance schedule optimisation was largely manual, which for the more than 1000 tasks involved is quite labour-intensive.In this paper the authors describe an approach developed at the University of Newcastle in partnership with the HVCCC to automate this schedule optimisation process. We will discuss our experience in applying exact (mixed integer programming) and heuristic techniques from mathematics and computer science to address the problem. This work is anticipated to lead to new decision-support tools for the HVCCCÆs capacity planning team.

"Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

The high cost of sampling systems is largely due to the fact that indiv- idual mechanical type sampling units must be installed at the discharge end of ore/pulp pipelines, that is, at points where the pipeline discharges into pump sumps or the like. A considerable economic advantage may be obtained in the use of a samp- ling device that can be installed at any point in the path of the trans- porting pipe line. Initial tests on a vertical line with an injection sampler using iron ore concentrates reveal the validity of this type sample versus that taken with a mechanical sampler. A descrip- tion of the injection sampler shows its simplicity of installation, requir- ing minimum downtime on existing lines.

Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

Flotation is the one of the most used techniques for the mineral separation of non-ferrous ores worldwide. However, the increase of the complexness along with the decrease of ores liberation sizes ought to become important challenges for mineral processing, including flotation. It now appears necessary to better understand the fundamentals of the flotation process, particularly the adsorption of flotation reagents at the liquid/mineral interfaces, to propose further improvements. Flotation relies on different phenomena: surfactants adsorption, on one hand, and collision, adhesion, and transport of particles with bubbles, on the other hand. For acknowledging the reagents adsorption mechanisms, molecular modelling tools borrowed from chemical and material sciences, are increasingly used. Atomistic simulations were successfully applied to study the flotation reagents interaction with various mineral surfaces, eg of two common minerals from iron ores, kaolinite, and magnetite surfaces, or with fluorite surface, a tungsten ores common gangue mineral.

"BHP Billiton West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara with the focus on determining the lump yield (the mass percentage of >6.3 mm rocks) and the lump and fines grade for iron ore products. The geometallurgy program provides accurate information to design engineers and technical marketing teams on the performance of different iron ore mineralogies for future deposits. Additionally geometallurgy results are being used to guide short-term production planning with their introduction into short-term geology models and grade control models. The data that underpins this knowledge is from dedicated geometallurgical programs, drilled using PQ (~83 mm) holes. These holes are crushed by intervals that are based on geological definition which provides an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade. The lump is then subjected to standard dropping and tumbling test stages to produce a simulated lump and fines product. In the past, quality assurance, quality control holes were drilled using HQ (~64 mm) holes for geochemistry purposes. These holes were crushed to provide an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade and then 100 per cent is sent for assay (with no dropping and tumbling). Utilising data from HQ holes can significantly increase the indicative geometallurgical data available. This paper compares the geometallurgical results from both PQ and HQ holes from a range of bedded iron deposits (Brockman and Marra Mamba).
