Heatings, fires and explosions in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland coal mines since 1972, are reviewed. Geological and mine settings are outlined. Where available, gas analysis and critical decisions are discussed. This paper updates work by NSW Department of Mineral Resources (1995) and the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy in a report on fires and explosion in Queensland coal mines (Richardson and Ham, 1996). Incident data has important applications in terms of evidence-based risk assessment and identifying key issues to be integrated into competency based training programs. Predictive indicators are reviewed in terms of coal parameters in seams where the incidents occurred.

Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

Electroslag remelting is widely used to produce various special steels, mainly because of its ability to provide high cleanliness and excellent homogeneity of ingot. Undoubtedly an optimal slag plays a key role in removing inclusions and enhancing the mechanical properties of a specific special steel. In order to improve the metallurgical performance of the slag in electroslag refining of die steel, a variety of slags have already been developed using traditional trial-and-error methods. Nonetheless, these slags may not be inherently optimal for the specific requirements of actual die steel refining processes. In this work, we have designed a CaF2-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO quinary slag system using genetic algorithms method aiming to remove the existing large size inclusions (D and Ds type) in high quality die steel. The comprehensive effects of five components (CaF2, CaO, Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO) were studied based on existing fundamental theory. The slag composition was screened considering the parameters such as melting point, electrical conductivity, calcium ion concentration, and appropriate viscosity etc. Furthermore, the candidate optimal slag was applied in the industrial production of die steel by electroslag remelting method. The detection results indicate that majority large inclusions (D and Ds type) have been successfully removed, showing significant advantage to traditional slags. This result has demonstrated the genetic method to be efficient and reliable. In addition, depending on the personalised demand of other steel and alloys, this method allows for the adjustment of the screening frameworks and processes to develop the candidate optimal slags. This method has not been reported previously in the field of electroslag composition design, and compared with the traditional trial-and-error method, the new method will save a lot of time and experimental costs.

This investigation was planned to determine:1. The precipitation-hardening properties of the copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys; and2. The influence of arsenic and bismuth, singly and together, on the mechanical properties of these alloys.It was carried out in conjunction with an investigation, previously published in these Prooeedings on "The Influence of Various Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Copper containing a small percentage of Bismuth," and also formed part of a study of the influence of bismuth, nickel and phosphorus on the properties of commercial arsenical-copper.The first part of the present investigation arose out of a discovery some years ago of precipitation-hardening in phosphorus-deoxidized coppernickel boiler tubes, containing approximately 2% nickel and 0·03% phosphorus, supplied to an Australian Railways Department. At that time there was little information available on precipitation-hardening in copperrich copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys, but at the end of 1935 a short paper on the subject was published by E. C. Rollason and T. G. Bamford(2) and at the beginning of 1940 a comprehensive account was published by D. K. Crampton, H. L. Burghoff and J. T. Stacy.(3) Although the investigation carried, out independently by the present author was not as comprehensive as that of Crampton, Burghoff and Stacy, the results are in agreement with those of the American as well as of the British authors; hence, only a summary of this aspect of the work is needed here to establish a basis for a study of the influence of bismuth and arsenic.PREPARATION OF TEST PIECESAll alloys were melted under charcoal in plumbago crucibles in an oil-fired furnace and were poured out of contact with air into oil-dressed moulds to give billets either 7· 5 in. long X 0.83 in. diam. X 1·3 lb. weight or 12 in. long X 1·125 in. diam. X 3·3 lb. weight depending on requirements (the larger size was used, for example, in establishing the annealing characteristics of the precipitation-hardening alloys). The raw materials were electrolytic copper of the composition described in the previous paper(I) 6% copper-arsenic, 14% copper-phosphorus, 1:7% copper-bismuth, and Mond nickel in the form of "shot." The method of producing test pieces from these billets and the annealing treatments ana tests to which the pieces were subjected have been described in the previous paper.

The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. This will result in an unprecedented opportunity for a full variographic comparison between RC and BH sampling, aimed at designing specific, fit-for-purpose sampling procedures as a function of ore quality, cut-off grades and important contaminant levels.CITATION:Engström, K and Esbensen, K H, 2017. In the deformation of a metal or a single-phase alloy all the crystals composing the metal after their shape in a similar manner as the metal in bulk and to about· the same extent. This is not the case in an alloy consisting of two phases of different resistance to plastic deformation. In such an alloy the two phases take part in the deformation approximately in inverse proportion to their hardness, at least at the beginning of the deformation. (1) The hardness difference becomes less in the course of the deformation and thereby the deformation more equal. The phenomena occurring during cold-rolling of some two-phase alloys have been investigated by H. Unckel who made statistical grain measurements of the degree of deformation of the two phases after various reductions by rolling and also microscopical observations of the flow in the neighbourhood of the grain boundaries. Because of the different relative flow of the two phases, the normal flow is disturbed in the vicinity of their boundaries, and some additional plastic flow must take place in these regions, the disturbance being levelled out at some distance from the boundary. The deformation of the two phases present simultaneously in the material should thus be different from that of each phase separately. The investigation of theimportance and the effects of this interaction of crystals of different phases is the subject of this paper.The deformation of crystals occurs as a gliding of crystal layers following crystallographic laws. In consequence of this slip the crystals composing the material tend to assume a common orientation, i.e. some crystallographic axes tend to become parallel to each other in all the crystals. The type of this preferred orientation depends on the type of the crystal and the working process. Any change in the mechanism of deformation results, therefore, in a change in the preferred orientation. Such a change in kind and degree of preferred orientation will, therefore, also occur if the interaction of crystals in a two-phase alloy gives rise to a mechanism of deformation different from that in the free phases.The present paper describes a study of the preferred orientation, the microstructure and hardness in wires of brass drawn to various extents.The development of preferred orientations in the two phases with increasing reduction was followed up in various layers of the wire.EXPERIMENTAL DETAILSThe experiments were carried out with a commercial 5 S.W.G. wire (0,212 in. diameter) containing: 62·7% Cu, 37·3% Zn, very faint traces...

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.

The geologist is often called upon to give judgment on the possibilities of reviving a former mining field presumably worked out as far as the evidence then available indicated. From time to time, scarcity and consequent high prices of metals has led to there-examination of many old fields. The possibility of resuming investigation on them where the practical miner ceased work, even where he had the aid of the trained geologist, has long since disappeared.Means of access to mines have been removed and water fills the workings. Hence an indirect mode of attack becomes essential.This method depends mainly on past history, and may be described as a reaching out by faith supported by shrewd guessing from the known to the unknown. Apart from whatever general intelligent observations may be made in situ of the evidence of former mining activity, the method depends largely on the examination of the past history of the field as revealed in the official records, company reports, plans of underground workings, local newspaper accounts, and the testimony of practical miners formerly employedon the field, the' reliability of which has to be carefully sifted. The matter derived from the examination of these sources must next be rigorously collated and correlated where possible. When the review of all individu!1l features and aspects has been completed, tentative and speculative conclusions may be drawn which, though not verifiable before the event, will usually prove to be more serviceable guides in exploratory operations than mere "blind stabbing."As an actual illustration of what is involved in the mode of procedure outlined above, the following is the description of an investigation in which the writer took part.In 1937, during the course of the Commonwealth Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, a detailed geological investigation was undertaken of the Croydon gold field, situated near the south-eastern. extremity of the Gulf of Carpentaria in North Queensland.The history of the field briefly is as follows: It was discovered in 1885, reached its peak of production 1896, declining thereafter till 1906, when operations ceased. The total production was about 1,000,000 ounces of gold bullion, containing approximately 40 per cent. of silver. The gold bullion was won from flat-dipping quartz reefs, which yielded an average of 2.oz. to the ton, and the maximum depth to which production occurred was 500 feet. Subsequent prospecting below this depth failed to locate further ore.In consequence of the inaccessibility of the mines and the almost total masking of the' surface by alluvium, the investigation of future possibilities became largely an. office ,study, which was conducted under the following headings:-1. A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

The external urfaces and interiors (as polished sections) of particles of coconut hell and extruded peat activated carbons taken from everal Australian carbon-in-pulp operations were examined with an optical micro cope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron microprobe.Calcium carbonate (calcite) precipitated from the pulp was the major inorganic material on the external surfaces of the carbon particle, but several ore minerals, including quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and clay minerals were also identified, along with trona, gypsum, a nickel cyanide, and a magnesium salt. Sections of carbon particles showed that calcite was virtually the only introduced inorganic material inside the carbons.It was distributed in the pores and cracks throughout the coconut shell carbon particles but tended to be concentrated in the outer layers of the extruded peat carbon particles. The mechanism of calcite formation and deposition is uncertain. Gold X-ray dot maps showed that gold was distributed through to the centre of coconut shell carbons and to a depth of at least 500 µm in extruded peat carbons. The distribution of gold within the carbon particles was similar to that of calcite.

Whilst much has been written in past years by geologists, scientists, mining engineers, etc., regarding the well·known and justly notorious anticlinal, or, as they are more commonly known, " saddle" reefs of Bendigo, comparatively little noticehas been given to the synclinal or "inverted saddle "reefs and their relationship with each other. In taking up the question of the synclinal folds, I recognise that it is a large undertaking to confine within the limits of a short paper, and at the same time convey a comprehensive idea of their characteristics, and the importance of their relationship with the anticlinal folds, in the general question of practical mining. However, from a practical point of view I consider the question of great importance, and if an interest in it can be awakened, more particularly among practical men, the object of this paper will be achieved.Before entering into the subject I must briefly state some facts, and perhaps some theories, in respect to the deposition of the Lower Silurian rocks, and their subsequent buckling up, as now seen on the Bendigo gold-field. At the same time, I do not intend to go very closely into the geological aspect of the question, as I wish the paper to be considered as a practical one.

After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. The establishment of the Imperial Smelting Furnace at Sulphide Coporation Pty. Limited for the smelting of zinc and lead made it necessary to design and install sintering capacity to produce approximately 500 t.p.d. of zinc-lead sinter. The updraught sintering process installed is a recent development and the plant was designed with adequate flexibility and equipment to enable operating staff to investigate the process and achieve maximum production under optimum operating conditions.Sulphur dioxide gases from the sinter machine are passed to a contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.

SEVERAL serious accidents, which had occurred owing to the platman leaving the plat without first withdrawing the "chairs" from the shaft, set the writer scheming to devise a mechanically operated system which would obviate such accidents and be "fool-proof". It was obvious at the outset that some means of indicating to the engine-driver by the movement of the "chairs" themselves, whether they were "in" or "out" of the shaft, was necessary.An arrangement of signalling similar to railway semaphores was considered, but was rejected owing to the difficulties accruing from the large number of communicating wires which would be required down the shaft-viz., 2 for each level. After several experiments, a comparatively simple and efficient electrical system was devised, and which is covered by Commonwealth Patent TO. 10,402.One of the chief features of the apparatus is its simplicity, and its strongest point is the fact that both the engine-driver and platman receive visual indication of the position of the "chairs." The arrangement consists of a miniature coloured glow lamp, one for each level of each shaft compartment, arranged and placed beside the numbers and arrows corresponding to the various levels, on the winding engine indicators. The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016.
