Critical reviews of grade control generally focus on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block model (OCM) grades, with little or no attention given to dig-line design. For example, the estimation of block grades is deemed important as estimation errors lead to the misclassification of ore types and subsequent dollar loss. Recognition of the problem that the underestimation of block grades may be more or less costly than overestimation led to the application of loss functions to the classification of individual OCM blocks by ore type. The method is known as maximum profit selection (MPS). However, each OCM block may be misclassified a second time by dig-line design. Although each block may initially be assigned an optimum ore type by MPS, OCM blocks are seldom individually mineable by ore type. As a result, a common solution to this problem is the design of mineable polygons or dig lines loosely constrained by a minimum mining width. All material within a properly designed dig-line polygon can be mined and sent to a single destination such as the mill, stockpile or waste dump. These dig lines are often designed manually or by simple variations of computer-generated contour lines. They are generally suboptimal and result in additional misclassifications of ore types. This paper provides an algorithm for constrained optimum dig-line design where dig-line misclassifications are also evaluated through loss functions or MPS. Constrained optimum dig-line designs minimise the dollars lost by dig line misclassifications for a given minimum mining width constraint. Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

Over the last 15 years working in the mining, construction and extractive industries, one of the areas that has always concerned and at the same time drawn the author to it is the application of drilling and blasting in the underground development mining and civil construction tunnelling fields. In that time, the author has come across many drives and tunnels that are larger than design or badly damaged in the perimeter or both. When the question is asked as to why this is the case, the reply is generally æthatÆs the way it is and always has beenÆ. Sometimes it is blamed on bad ground, bad drilling, bad explosives, bad initiation or just plain bad. Most operators build a dilution factor into development and tunneling costs as an acceptance of overbreak and similarly pattern bolt everything to overcome excessive perimeter damage. This paper will attempt to unravel some of the mysteries behind perimeter drilling and blasting in underground drives and tunnels and discuss methods to reduce overbreak and therefore reduce costly dilution and to minimise perimeter damage which in turn will allow more cost-effective ground support. It should not be assumed that better drilling and blasting alone would automatically allow an operation to reduce ground support. The operator must still æreadÆ the ground and its characteristics in order to ensure sufficient ground support is placed to allow the operation to progress safely. This paper will not go into the intricacies of bolting, meshing, shotcreting, concreting and other ground support, but it will use indicative costs for the primary areas of drilling, explosives, excavation and labor to show the magnitude of cost-efficiencies which can be obtained through improved drilling and blasting applications. Drill and blast remains the most flexible and cost-effective method of underground excavation as long as it is applied safely and effectively.

Many mine accidents will affect the mine ventilation system when they occur. At present, there is a lack of monitoring means to capture the occurrence of accidents in time by monitoring the ventilation system, so as to take emergency measures to reduce the loss of personnel and property. Pressure wave is an elastic wave existing in air. Most accidents in mine will cause obvious changes of pressure wave. It is an innovative idea to monitor the occurrence of accidents in mine by measuring pressure wave. The development and functions of the pressure monitoring device and related software are introduced in detail. The pressure wave monitoring test is carried out in San Xavier underground mining laboratory, and the D-wave and S-wave waveform data are collected. The waveform characteristics are analysed, and the main frequency distribution of the pressure wave is found to be within 1 Hz by using FFT. At the same time, the influence of the propagation distance of the pressure wave on the waveform is analysed. The propagation velocity of D-wave and S-wave are roughly calculated, and they are 279.6 m/s and 397.3 m/s respectively. S-wave is slightly faster than D-wave. Although there are errors and uncertainties in the test, the test verified the feasibility of the existence and collection of pressure waves in the ventilation roadway, and provides a method for the future study of the propagation of pressure waves in the mine ventilation system.

Project Sustainability Assessment - Matching Method to Enterprise Size Sustainable development requires managing natural resources, including minerals, in a way that is conducive to long-term wealth creation and the maintenance of capital (natural, social, human, economic and physical). One aspect of the minerals sustainability discussion focuses on replacing depleted mineral capital with other forms of capital so as to ensure that the contribution of a mineral project is net positive over its life. Another, equally important, aspect focuses on selection of projects and technologies that contribute to the achievement of a variety of sustainability objectives, such as environmental protection, efficient use of resources, water and energy, worker health and safety, and the equitable distribution of risks and benefits within and across generations. Technical feasibility and relative economic performance remain necessary decision criteria for mineral investment decisions, but they are no longer sufficient. Enterprises, regardless of size, are now confronted with the challenge of comparing investment alternatives based on a new, broader set of criteria. The field of integrated sustainability assessment (ISA) emerged in response to this changed social and business environment. ISA is a structured process for examining the economic, social and environmental impacts of a project or technology. The purpose of an assessment can be broad, a strategic review of corporate behavior for example, or quite narrow, input to a specific decision process such as the selection of a piece of equipment. There are numerous methods and analytical tools available to conduct ISAs and selection of the most appropriate for a given situation will depend upon temporal focus (retrospective to prospective), decision context (strategic, tactical or operational), and phase of the assessment process (problem structuring, analysis, resolution, ex post review), among others. Selection also depends upon enterprise size and the attendant availability of financial and human resources. Large multi-national firms often undertake complex, data intensive sustainability assessments, in part because the projects they are involved in are multi-faceted, long term, and require significant financial investments. Small and medium sized enterprises are seldom able to commit the same level of resources to an ISA, and if the projects they undertake are less complicated, a time consuming and detailed assessment may be unnecessary. Regardless of enterprise size, the tangible and reputational benefits of conducting as ISA must exceed the actual monetary cost of doing so. This presentation will provide an overview of available ISA tools, categorising them in terms of their data requirements, methodology, outputs and applicability in various decisions contexts. Distinction will be drawn between situations where reasonable approximations of project impacts can be expected to provide an adequate amount of information and those for which more detailed analysis is essential. Finally, ISA strategies that have been successful and cost effective at different scales of business enterprise will be identified. This is an abstract only. Vanadium titano-magnetite (VTM) is one of the important iron ore resources in the world. High viscosity and low fluidity are the basic characteristics of hot metal containing vanadium and titanium during the ironmaking process. Clarifying the influencing mechanism of the melt viscosity would be a significant issue for the high efficiency smelting of VTM. In this paper, a self-developed melt viscometer based on the principle of torsional vibration theory was employed to measure the viscosity of hot metal accurately. Simultaneously, the thermodynamic calculations and some modern detection methods were also used to investigate the precipitation behaviour of high-melting-point phases in hot metal containing vanadium and titanium. The measuring results show that the viscosity of molten iron gradually increases with the increase of titanium content when the mass fraction of titanium is between 0.09 wt per cent – 0.50 wt per cent. Meanwhile, the viscosity of the hot metal was affected significantly by the vanadium content. When the vanadium mass fraction was higher than 0.30 wt per cent, the viscosity of hot metal increased sharply, which will have a serious impact on the fluidity of the hot metal. Furthermore, it was revealed by thermodynamic calculations that an increase in titanium and vanadium content would result in the precipitation of high melting point phases such as TiC, TiN, VC, and VN in the molten iron, ultimately resulting in a decrease in its fluidity. Meanwhile, it was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observation that the precipitates in the hot metal were compounds consisting of V, Ti, C, and N elements, which agrees well with the thermodynamic analysis results.

The creation of an accurate and precise enough database requires the collection of many representative samples, subsampling and assaying them without destroying their integrity. The selection and implementation of sampling protocols often lead to severe difficulties, making the unaware practitioner vulnerable to massive exploration, feasibility and operating failures. Therefore, there is no substitute for a good understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS). Either because of ignorance, or because of short-term economic reasons, failure to comply with many stringent conditions can be devastating for the validity of a feasibility study, leading to false evaluations, to the abandonment of a viable property, or to the exploitation of one that is not profitable. All these failures have something in common: insufficient duplicate sampling, subsampling and assaying were performed; very important, preliminary heterogeneity tests were never performed; for short-term economic reasons, poor sampling and subsampling protocols were selected, second-class sampling systems and weightometers were installed and poor preventive maintenance and cleaning were implemented;and sampling experts were called only when the project was obviously in trouble. The conclusion is clear: in due time, iterative auditing of sampling practices is an insurance policy against massive financial losses for the company involved. A complete, comprehensive 100 point checklist of sampling Quality Assurance and Quality Control is provided, so critically important details to ensure success are not forgotten.

Perseverance nickel deposit is located at latitude 27¦ 491S, longitude 1200 42'E, 330 km north of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Gossanous outcrops were discovered in April, 1971, and after further detailed surface investigations, percussion drilling led to diamond drilling by June, 1971. Up to December, 1972, 127 diamond holes totalling 45,590 m were drilled to indicate 33 million tonnes averaging 2.2% Ni using a 1% cut-off grade. The deposit occurs in a lenticular ultra- mafic unit emplaced in metasediments locally forming the eastern flank of the Archaean green- stone belt trending NNW from Leonora to Wiluna. To the east a major strike fault separates the metasediments from gneiss; westwards there is a sequence of metavolcanics with further ultra- mafic units. Length of the lens is 3500 m and it attains a maximum width of 800 In. The eastern contact is moderately regular, but the western contact is prominently embayed. Local strikes are NNW, and dips are steeply W. A set of strike faults cuts the ultramafics and enveloping quartzites. These are normal faults, parallel to the major eastern fault, dipping 65-70¦W. The Australian mining industry faces skills shortages across a broad spectrum of disciplines and levels, as it enters another major growth phase. Critical amongst the areas of most significant shortage in the professional sphere is the discipline of geotechnical professionals. More mines, deeper mines, ageing workforces are all contributing to this chronic shortage. But the shortage is not just at the operating sites, it is across a range of employment fields including sites, head offices, consultants, researchers and educators. This paper reviews the status of a number of these fields and explores some of the issues being faced. The different roles of a site geotechnical professional and a specialist geotechnical consultant are explored, together with some of the trends in terms of how such people are operating, and the skills they are expected to have to fulfill their job requirements. The paper also considers the move towards possible mandatory statutory geotechnical positions at mine sites and some of the implications if this were to come into force. Finally, the paper considers the current provider programs for mining geotechnical education, and how additional offerings are going to be needed in order to address the current shortages and the inconsistencies in terms of job expectations for people assigned to geotechnical roles without adequate education and training.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. The Granites Gold Mine Callie gold deposit is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert. Gold mineralisation occurs due to a complex interplay of geological factors which include but are not limited to favourable lithology, structure, alteration and quartz veining. High-grade mineralisation, while pervasive under favourable conditions, is highly variable over short distances and is very nuggetty. In contrast, the lithology and geological structures that host the mineralisation are very continuous. Orebody modelling techniques have evolved over time because of a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls. Modelling issues such as sampling and assaying accuracy, modelling method, data density, gold population statistics, geological interpretation and domaining, grade boundary and calculation conditions, and model block size are constantly being reassessed in an effort to increase understanding of the mineralisation controls and modelling accuracy. The evolution of the modelling process in response to increasing data levels and a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls has resulted in changes to the perception of the orebody size and style. This has caused the choice of underground mining method to be revised several times and the process to final mining method selection to take longer than usual. In order to achieve the planned production start-up date of July 1998 the process has been allowed to progress in parallel with development of the underground mine. This paper describes the resource modelling and mining method selection process applied to the Callie underground mine and some of the issues which have contributed to its evolution. Some conclusions that are relevant to the efficient planning and development of new mining projects in general are presented.

The design of excavations in rock must, implicitly or explicitly take into consideration the influence of small- and large-scale geological structures. For most sites the complexity of a fractured rock mass is best captured using a 3D fracture system model based on field data. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves stochastic modelling of the ‘smaller scale’, nondeterministic structures. For slope stability or tunnelling projects DFN modelling provides a valuable geotechnical tool for characterisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of the DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a large open pit in Australia. The proposed pit is to encounter a 160?m thick, high strength, sheared shale unit, which overlies a crystalline basement. DFN modelling was undertaken separately for both the shale and basement units. While the model inputs and development for each unit are briefly presented, the focus of this paper is on the various applications of the DFN modelling.A key advantage of the DFN approach for design studies is its probabilistic application to structural analyses and results. Multiple realisations of the same model were generated for both the shale and basement units, with the stability analysis carried out on each iteration. The generation of a large number of DFN models and analyses allow assessment of wedge volume, factor of safety and proportion of unstable slope for a range of conditions. The DFN modelling at the case study site was also utilised for a number of other purposes. For example, investigation of likely fault lengths in the shale unit and combined rock mass and defect failure. Australian steelmakers produce up to 30 000 t/yr of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. Current disposal techniques include sending EAF dust to landfill, stockpiling, and paying zinc smelters or registered waste removalists/processors to take the dust. Many of the complex overseas pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes cited in the literature are not considered economic. Governmental, environmental and social pressures on producers to consider more sustainable disposal options are mounting, and there is now a strong push to consider recovering potentially valuable or recyclable components, such as zinc and iron units, from EAF dust. As well, there remain strong economic drivers for producers to find lower cost disposal solutions. Characterisation studies undertaken at CSIRO Minerals have revealed important physical differences in the nature of the zinc- and iron-bearing phases contained in domestic EAF dusts. These differences have been exploited using simple and cheap mineral processing techniques such as water washing, wet cycloning and wet magnetic separation. This has allowed a significant upgrade in the zinc content of EAF dust to be achieved, together with a reduction in the levels of key smelter penalty elements, such as chlorides and fluorides. The zinc-rich portion of the dust is now a more attractive smelter feed while the iron-rich part of the dust could potentially be briquetted or pelletised with a reductant and recycled to recover iron, and thus close the loop on dust processing. The basis of the separations tested together with laboratory results from several Australian dust samples are presented and discussed in this paper.

GEOSCAN on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape in South Africa, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption, and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech’s experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani’s GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis.

An important requirement in every geological quality control program is that the identity and grades of the control samples (duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs), and blanks) must remain æblindÆ to the analytical laboratory. Once the entity to be controlled is aware of relevant details of the control process, such as the identity of the control samples, the objectivity may be lost and the control may no longer be completely valid. Whereas the blind insertion of field duplicates and coarse blanks can be easily conducted at site, simultaneously with the sampling process, the rest of the control samples should be inserted into the batches during or after sample preparation and prior to assaying, in order to ensure a proper assessment of precision, accuracy and assay contamination, independent of the internal quality control of the laboratory. Such a procedure raises the concern that blind insertion of crushed or pulverised material in sample batches prior to assaying could represent a breach in the chain of custody principle, as samples would have to be temporarily returned to the custody of a non-laboratory person in charge of the insertions. In this seemingly conflict scenario, what should we give up? Do we maintain the strict chain of custody, knowing that the laboratory will be aware of the identity of some of the control samples, or that some duplicates will not be true same-batch duplicates? Do we ignore chain of custody issues to maintain the anonymity of the control samples and insert blind same-batch duplicates, CRMs and blanks? Is it possible to do blind insertions without breaching the chain of custody? Current NI 43-101 and JORC requirements, as well as real-world QA/QC and sample security practices, are discussed in light of AMECÆs approach to the solution of this apparent dilemma.

In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.
