Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.

A review and summary of the results of 120 coal sampling system bias tests is presented. This review supports new methodology using multivariate statistics currently being considered by ISO TC27 SC4. The current difficulties with ISO 13909-8 are explained and the logic behind the current new working draft is discussed in detail. Bias was detected in nearly 36 per cent of tests reviewed, suggesting that much improvement is needed in designing, maintaining and monitoring the performance of sampling systems in order to avoid sampling bias.CITATION:Rose, C D, 2012. Historically, production from sublevels of the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) started from blind uphole rises at the end of slot drives. Where previous investigations considered removing these slot drives and starting production with independent ore drives, any development savings were consumed when drives were extended to minimise ore loss. Since 2017, EHM and Orica have been investigating opportunities to optimise drill and blast practices by implementing Orica’s Wireless Electronic Blasting System (WEBS). To reduce ore drive development metres, a novel design was proposed utilising the WebGen™ 100 system to combine a rise with pre-charged widening firings. Initially these new rise and widening firings achieved results similar to previous EHM designs, achieving on average 81 per cent of design height and width. Due to poor performance of the fourth trial a significant re-design was required. Modifications included drill hole re-positioning, in-hole primer relocation and initiation delay adjustments. Since the re-design a step change in rise performance has been observed with rise and pre-charged widening shots averaging 95 per cent of design height and width. With rise and widening performance exceeding expectations, the removal of slot drives has allowed a substantial reduction in lateral development. Development savings of 165 m and 169 m from the RL1325 and RL1300 levels have been achieved. Primary draw and ore recovery has also increased due to the later addition of pre charged forward stripping rings. Level design changes have also significantly improved the mining cycle by allowing for a reduction in required ground support, improved secondary ventilation, a reduction of critical path development, simpler production scheduling and less wear and tear on machinery. Future mine level designs now incorporate key learnings and are proving beneficial to a variety of scenarios including changing orebody boundaries at depth.

The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. Channel iron deposits (CID) consist of ferruginous chemical sediments, and are an unusual subset of Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits almost unique to the Pilbara, where they constitute around 19 per cent of the Pilbara’s iron ore exports. These deposits occupy many of the ancestral river channels of the Pilbara region, especially the Robe River palaeochannels, incising and meandering through the Precambrian banded iron formations (BIF) of the Hamersley Group and the underlying Fortescue Volcanics.This paper explores the factors underlying geochemical variation in CID, particularly the chemical properties of goethite. The selected deposits in the western Robe palaeochannel and its tributaries show little or no secondary reworking by later water tables. There is a total absence of aluminosilicate clays with all the deleterious elements such as aluminium and silica. Instead, these are associated with the goethite mineral lattice, either within or adsorbed to the cortices of pelletoids.A thickly vegetated environment, and the presence of the Maddina Volcanics as potential source rocks for these western Robe CID is offered as an explanation for relatively high aluminium in the deposits studied, and, in turn, as the reason most parts of the palaeochannel are preserved as inverted topography.CITATION:Beattie, E, Placzek, C and Blake, K, 2017. The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.

In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-west of Adelaide in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a design capacity of 8 Mtpa. The flotation circuit includes six rougher cells, an IsaMill for regrinding the rougher concentrate and a Jameson cell preceding the three stage conventional cell cleaner circuit.Since its commissioning, the Prominent Hill flotation circuit has been the focus of a series of projects aimed at continual performance improvement. This has been achieved by a systematic approach of project identification, evaluation and implementation which has led to a progressive improvement in flotation performance. Innovations that have been successfully implemented include aspects of cell design and operation, and reagent suite optimisation.Improvements to the mechanical cells initially focused on the installation of a modified rotor-stator design in the rougher circuit, as recommended by Outotec. Isolated cells were fitted with this technology and proven to provide a benefit for copper recovery before the design was trialled in subsequent cells along the bank. Based on this success, further modifications were made to other aspects of the rougher and cleaner cells.Laboratory trials conducted at Prominent Hill involve a screening process identifying potential reagents from a list of products, which are then rigorously tested in the laboratory before one is selected for trial in the concentrator. Where these reagents have demonstrated a statistical improvement in performance they have typically been incorporated permanently into the flotation circuit. Used in conjunction with geology and geophysics, geochemistry provides powerful exploration tools of special relevance to Australian environments. New methods are needed that will confront the forthcoming emphasis on locating concealed orebodies. Deep weathering is conducive to techniques using groundwaters or gaseous emanations as sample media. Increasing use is anticipated for isotope measurements and for recognition of country rock characteristics that denote proximity to mineralization. Improvements in the sensitivity, reliability and portability of analytical instruments will underpin the contributions of geochemical methods to future mineral exploration.

Most analysts determining tungsten trioxide in low grade samples are aware that colorimetric procedures do not possess the inherent disadvantages of gravimetric methods operating on milligram quantities of tungsten trioxide. Apart from the inaccuracies associated with weighing four or five milligrams of ignited oxide in a platinum crucible of about 30 gm. weight with a large surface area to absorb moisture, using a 5 gm. charge on samples less than about 0·15 per cent tungsten trioxide, it is extremely difficult toget complete or pure precipitation of tungsten with cinchonine, cinchonine plus alpha benzoin oxime, rhodamine B or any other of the commonly used precipitants. Table 2', No. 8, illustrates the low results obtained by gravimetric as opposed to colorimetric procedures. In addition the colorimetric determination requires only a small portion of the time consumed by gravimetric practices and the increased accuracy obtainable in low ranges together with the saving in time made it highly desirable to develop a colorimetric method suitable for King Island ores.The most commonly used colorimetric method is that introduced by Feigl and Krumholz (1932), since modified by various investigators (Grimaldi and North, 1943; Sandell, 1946; Westwood and Mayer, 1947; Gentry and Sherrington, 1948; Freund, Wright and Brookshier, 1951; Grouthamel and Johnson, 1954; and others). Oversize rock breaking and metal tramp removal are key issues for reducing primary crusher downtime, as well as improving the safety associated with its operation. Remote operation of such tasks would thus not only increase productivity, but also reduce the risks related to work in confined spaces, fall risks, and overhead hazards. These issues are particularly relevant in high-capacity operations such as iron ore mining, where large machines are in continuous operation. This article describes the architecture, construction and advanced testing of a novel remotely operated robotic mechanism for assessment and removal of metal tramp from primary crusher chambers. The system essentially includes a robotic-arm equipped with a hydraulic clamp tool for handling oversize material, as well as an oxy-flame module for cutting metal pieces entrapped within the primary crusher cavity. The first industrial unit was delivered to a large iron ore mine in Brazil, where the installation and testing is scheduled within the coming months.

Following a review of life-of-asset work at MMG’s Rosebery mine in which a proposal to increase production from 0.8 Mt/a to 1.2 Mt/a was mooted, questions were raised as to the seemingly arbitrary reasoning for the production increase. They included: Did the proposal actually add value? Was the production rate from the mine sustainable? Was it the best identifiable value-adding configuration?A multiple scenario analysis study commenced to model how various cut-off grade values against mill throughput, along with associated capital expenditure, would impact on the potential value of the operation. This was carried out utilising the ‘hill of value’ approach promoted by AMC Consultants.The traditional approach to these studies uses a constant cut-off value (NSR – net smelter return) for the whole mine analysis. This was thought to potentially introduce a large amount of variability to the model as different ore types were thought to have different processing costs and different underground lenses were thought to have different mining costs. With the aim of developing a consistent value measure that would be comparable between the lenses, an alternative measure was suggested for all ore block values in this model, irrespective of lens location.The new measure used was a mine variable value (MVV). This allowed for the variable factors of final metal concentrate production to be removed from the ore value. From a mining point this was the haulage distance from ore source to run-of-mine (ROM). For the mill it was the amount of reagents required, varying based on grade together with the amount of power required for crushing, grinding and tailings handling.From the initial run of the model, preliminary results lead to a conclusion of increased value being gained by either increasing cut-off grade or increased mill throughput rate. The validity of the result was tested using alternative price scenarios, which although changed the absolute value achieved did not significantly change the identified value-adding strategies. The realisation of these value increases identified are however contingent on higher sustainable development rates being able to be achieved mine-wide, higher backfilling rates being able to be achieved and overcoming recognised ventilation constraints. Further detailed studies are being put in place to identify the practicality of overcoming these recognised constraints and achieving the higher-value strategies identified.The ongoing objective of the hill of value model built is to keep the model alive as a life-of-asset planning tool and to continue refining the foundation data, such that various mining strategies can be analysed with increased confidence.CITATION:Hills, A J, Hall, B E and Poniewierski, J, 2014. Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. It should be noted that spectrometers determine both the elemental silicon and that present as silicon dioxide in occluded slag and inclusions.The silicon content of iron and steel is determined in this laboratory by spectrophotometric measurement of a "molybdenum blue" colour. A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J.
