AS IN OTHER lines of engineering, progress in mining was influenced during 1931 by the world-wide economic depression. Low-metal prices ? resulted in active efforts to reduce production costs of base-metal mines. Probably the chief factors in reducing costs were the greater efficiency of labor, due to better relations between management and workmen, to the scarcity of jobs, reduced wages in most base-metal mines, and to lower overhead expenses secured by drastic economies. The use of mechanical equipment continued to increase, due to more efficient designs and a better practical understanding of the applicability of such equipment to requirements. With one exception, there were no startling innovations in stoping methods, but there was notable progress in the better adaptation of mining methods. In the United States, no large new base-metal or silver mines came into production during the year. At a number of mines, output was curtailed, and operations were discontinued at several important producers. On the other hand world-wide interest in gold was stimulated, as evidenced by increased output from producing mines, the reopening of some old properties, and intensive prospecting for new deposits. Mining methods at several gold mines in the United States and Canada were modified or changed to obtain a higher extraction of ore or to meet the need for additional support of the mine workings at depth. Permanent record of improvements in mining practices has been made during the year by the Federal Government; the industry thus has available for its use more detailed information than ever before. This work was done through cooperation of the mining companies and their representatives with the United States Bureau of Mines, whereby many papers descriptive of practices and costs at individual mines have been published. The Bureau's program of describing methods and costs at the more important mines (those producing in excess of $100,000 annually) is nearly completed, but papers will be issued concerning such additional mines as may possess particular interest because of novel methods, exceptional conditions or operating results, and others to supplement reports already issued. In this way, an interesting record of the results of changing conditions, or innovations in methods, will be made available.

Among the zinc base alloys used for casting in metal moulds, pnrticularly die casting, those alloys containing aluminum usually together with copper, are probably the most widely used. The reason lies in their desirable mechanical properties and the fluidity and absence of hot shortncss which facilitate ca,sting. Objection to the use of these alloys may be raised on account of the rather frequent instances of failure of a type variously described as disintegration, exfoliation and intererystalline corrosion. In all cases which have come to our kno~vlcdge where the conditionsof service were known, failure has occurred upon cxposurc to moisture and heat varying from a hot moist atmosphere to lligh pressure steam. RIoreover, the alloys described in all such roses contain impurities or alloying metals which the present authors have found to have enormous accelerating effects on intererystalline oxid:~t'ion in zinc-aluminurn alloys. Thus Williams1 experimented with an alloy containing a large percentage of tin exposed in Cuba. Baucr2 reports failure of a boiler plug containing over 1 per cent. of impurities, doubtless lead for the must part, and Rawdon's3 examinations were madc on an alloy containing 0.1 per cent. lead also exyosctl to thc Tropics. No thorough investigation of the nature and cause of this type of failure has been made heretofore, so far as the authors are aware, although Rawdon correctly classified it as internal oxidation. We have, therefore, carried out this investigation in order to det'ermine the exact nature of this phenonienon and the effect of other metals present as impurities or intentional additions in accelerating or retarding it. In the appendix we include a considerable amount of data which may be valuable in selecting an alloy combining good physical properties with high resistance to oxidation. The Fletcherville Furnace was built in 1864 and 1865, making its first blast from August until October of the latter year, when it was blown out to prevent its " bunging-up." Repairs were made in time to enable it to be blown in again December 12th, 1865, the blast ending October 7th, 1866. Total product 1921.15 tons iron, an average of 6.8.2.5 tons per day, from ores yielding 44.8 per cent. Consumption of charcoal 223.2 bushels per ton of iron. The furnace journal up to this time shows no record of furnace dimensions, or temperature of the blast, but as near as can be ascertained, they were as follows, viz.: Height of stack, 42 feet. Diameter of bosh, 11 feet. Angle of bosh, 71/2 inches to 12 inches rise, about 58°. Diameter of open tunnel head, 42 inches. Number of tuyeres 3 ; each 3 inches in diameter. Dam 15 inches high. Tuyeres 24 inches high. Tymp 224 inches high. Diameter of steam cylinder, 20) inches. } Diameter of blast cylinder, 64 inches. } Stroke 5 feet. The engine is direct-acting horizontal non-condensing. December 26th, 1866, the furnace was again put in blast, having been considerably altered in the crucible; the height of stack, bosh, and tunnel head remaining as before. Six tuyeres were put in, three in each of the side arches. The hearth or crucible was rectangular in form, 3 feet wide x 31/2 feet long x 64 feet high. Inclination of bosh 58°. Height of tuyeres 26 inches; nozzles 21/4 inches diameter. Temperature of blast estimated to be about 500°.

The Friedensville zinc mine of The New Jersey Zinc Company is located about four miles south of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Saucon Valley, an infolded and down faulted block of Cambro-Ordovician carbonate sediments surrounded by hills of pre-Cambrian gneiss and Cambrian quartzite except where breached by Saucon Creek at its entrance into the Lehigh River. The Beekmantown formation of lower Ordovician age is the host for zinc and limonite ores, the former occurring in the lower dolomitic portion thereof and the latter in the upper interbedded dolomite and limestone portion of the section. The Beekmantown is overlain unconformably by the Jacksonburg of middle Ordovician age and according to Miller (2) underlain conformably by about 2500 feet of Cambrian dolomites and 200 feet of the basal Cambrian Hardyston quartzite. Igneous rocks, younger than the Cambro-Ordovician carbonate rocks, are absent in the vicinity of the ore deposits. The major structure is a N60°E-trending saddle-shaped doubly plunging anticline overturned to the north. A syncline lies to the north of the anticline. A thrust fault of substantial displacement repeats the south limb of the anticline. The ore consists of sphalerite and pyrite, along with gangue dolomite and quartz, filling and replacing the sedimentary type matrix of a strata-bound solution collapse breccia in the dolomitic portion of the lower Beekmantown. This breccia was produced in pre-Jacksonburg time as a consequence of uplift, erosion, and development of a karst topography and subsurface drainage system in the Beekmantown. Deposits of both zinc and limonite are present on the vertical north limb, on the crest and on the gently dipping (25°) south limb of the Friedensville anticline; consequently, there is no preferred structural setting for mineralization. Rather this distribution supports the view that the folding is post-ore. Features confirming this view are the development of flow cleavage in the breccia matrix, the deformation of some of the sphalerite, and the fracturing of the pyrite mineralization therein. There is nothing to indicate that the age of mineralization is other than Ordovician and older than Taconic deformation. In the absence of intrusive igneous activity younger than the ore host, the writer suggests that submarine volcanic exhalations associated with the volcanic activity recorded in the eastern eugeosynclinal facies of the Ordovician may be the source of the metal ions.

IN 1947 the metal-mining industry . passed through a year of readjustment; catching up on development work has caused production to suffer. Skilled labor has been short in most mining districts, notwithstanding the highest wage rate paid in the history of the industry. The trend has continued toward increased mechanization and refinements in practices and methods to increase the tons produced per man-shift. Improvements in procedures, however, have not kept pace with rising labor rates; and, in general, labor costs per ton mined have steadily increased since the war years. Prices of base metals have been the highest in a generation, but most producing companies can afford to pay the high wages. Capital expenditures have been approved for improvements to increase the output per man, both to reduce unit labor costs and to increase output. Surveys indicate a continuing

In my opinion, the explanation of the fuel-requirements involving the conception of heat available and necessary above a critical temperature, as advanced by Johnson 1 and elaborated by Howe, Raymond and others,2 affords a theoretically correct basis for such an accounting. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth a first crude attempt to construct a formula which shall show quantitatively the relation between the various factors affecting fuel-economy, and afford a means of comparing the enormous amount of data on the fuel-consumption of various blast-furnaces, at various times and under various conditions of operation. I have also applied this formula to a large number. of individual cases, and have, by its means, compared the furnace-practice of several important iron-making districts. II. DERIVATION OF FORMULA FOR FUEL-REQUIREMENTS. The general expression for the fuel-requirements of the blast-furnace, which I believe to be theoretically correct as to form, is as follows Carbon per ton of iron = Heat per ton of iron necessary in hearth above Tc./Heat per pound of carbon available in hearth above Tc. XFactor of rate of driving. +Carbon dissolved by CO2 of flux. +Carbon dissolved incidental to reduction of ore. + Carbon dissolved in pig-iron. (NOTE.-Tc = critical temperature.) POSSIBLY in no other of the non-ferrous mining districts of this country has the use and develop-ment of mechanical loaders been carried to such an extent as in the "lead belt" of Southeast Missouri. It has become apparent to the four mining companies in the district that it is imperative to apply satisfactory mechanical methods to the chief remaining stage of the entire operations-mining, milling, smelting and refining-in which manual labor is still largely used to handle material in process. With increasing wages and with the reduction of the metal divisor by the extension of mining into lower-grade orebodies, the shoveling cost per ton of lead produced has become relatively so large that in an effort to reduce it there is ample justification for considerable capital expenditure. Hand shovelers load about 18 tons of ore per shift and the average grade is less than five per cent. lead. Further, the ore is relatively heavy, about 21 cu. ft. to the ton when broken, and is often so coarse and so closely compacted after shooting that it requires much more block-holing, sledging, and muscular effort to shovel than, for example, does the cherty and more granular ore of the Joplin district or the finer ore in the headings of a drift mine. No mining company desires to pay for mere back muscles if it be economically feasible to avoid it, and labor saving machinery should be susceptible of operation by older employees, who are no longer capable of the more strenuous manual occupations.

The petroleum industry experienced a year of satisfactory accomplishment in Oklahoma during 1945. Crude oil production was increased, a new record for recent years was established in well completions, and refinery operations were maintained at a maximum level. Daily average crude oil production increased to 382,000 bbl., reflecting a 13.5 per cent gain compared with production during the previous pear. Total wells drilled during 1945 amounted to 2556, a gain of 28.7 per cent over 1944 Refinery throughout averaged 187,500 bbl. daily, an increase of approximately 4 percent over the preceding year.

The Alan Wood BOF Shop consists of two 140 ton furnaces with a rated yearly capacity of 1-1/4 million ingot tons, he hot metal for the BOF Shop is supplied by two 18 foot blast furnaces which produce an average of 2000 tons per day, To achieve the rated ingot ton capacity with this limited supply of hot metal, the preheating of scrap is necessary. This is accomplished in the furnace by using an oxygen-natural gas burner. Piping Arrangement The natural gas and oxygen are piped into the Shop through 8-inch lines to their respective valving stations. As can be seen from Figure 1, the flow of natural gas passes through a flow control valve which is common to both furnaces, after which it divides into two 6-inch lines forming two identical and independent gas control lines, one for each furnace.

In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

THE following is an account of a survey undertaken to test the possibility of outlining a kimberlite pipe by magnetouietric methods. Kimberlite is a basic igneous rock closely related to melilite-basalt or alnoite, which occurs either in the form of volcanic plugs or as dikes intruded into rocks of various types and geological ages up to and includ¬ing the Lower Cretaceous. The famous diamond mines of South Africa are all in kimberlite pipes and these pipes are probably the original source as well of the vast alluvial deposits found in various parts of the country. The pipe chosen for this experiment is one that ' occurs on the farm Goedgevonden No. 20, about sixteen miles north of the village of Klerksdorp and ninety miles southwest of Johannesburg. Some prospecting has been done on this pipe and diamonds were produced from it but not in paying quantities. The magnetometric survey was made in June, 1932, by R. Krahmann and H. Wallisch and the results are shown on the accompanying plan. On the plan are shown also the boundaries of the pipe as exposed at the surface and details in regard to the surrounding foundations. These are taken from a geological survey made at a later date by W. Beetz, of Johannesburg.

The usual changes, improvements and additions in production equipment have been introduced. An increased attention to, and interest in, research has been noteworthy, resulting in improved efficiency in operation of oil wells. control, utilization of reservoir energies and reduction of production costs.

MORE and more attention is being paid to the bonding of metals in their solid states. For a better understanding of this technique for joining metals and how it is affected by changes in temperature, pressure, and time at temperature and pressure, a detailed report concerning nickel to aluminum bonding has been published.' In order to broaden the knowledge accrued, some additional work concerning solid state joining of aluminum to copper and aluminum to zirconium was performed. The investigation of the Al-Cu system was considerably more extensive than the investigation of the Al-Zr system. For the A1-Cu system, not only were tensile sudies made but intermetallic penetration rate investigations also were carried out. The effect of temperature on intermetallic penetration rate for the A1-Cu system was determined at 11 tsi pressure, held 2 min. Procedure Apparatus: The hot pressing technique was the means of solid state reaction used and required the equipment depicted in Fig. 1. The following procedure was involved: The two metals to be reacted were placed in an aquadag-lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diam made of the same material. A thermocouple well was located in the die body 3½ in. down from the top of the die, while another well was located centrally in the bottom punch 8½ in. from the bottom of the die. This die assembly was located in three cylindrical ceramic heating furnaces placed in tandem. Each furnace was controlled individually by a Variac power transformer. In turn, the die and furnaces were placed in a water-cooled stainless steel pot which could be evacuated. A cover, which contained a centrally located Wilson seal with an 18-4-1 1 in. diam ram running through it, was bolted on the pot. After sealing, the pot was evacuated by a roughing pump to 200 microns pressure, after which a diffusion pump was used to bring the pressure down to 5 to 15 u. At this pressure, the furnaces were turned on. As soon as they started to heat, out-gassing of the entire unit raised the pressure to 30 to 400 p. By the time the specimens were at temperature ready to be pressed, approximately 4/2 hr, the vacuum pumps had re-established the 5 to 15 u pressure. Once the desired temperature was reached, the required pressure was applied for a predetermined length of time to the 1 in. ram, through to the top punch, and to the specimen. When the time for keeping the specimen under pressure had elapsed, the pressure was released, the energizing coil current turned off, and the assembly allowed to cool. After cooling, the die was removed from the pot and the specimen was ejected. Specimen Preparation: Two different types of specimens were made for this investigation. One was for subsequent tensile testing, while the other was for determination of intermetallic alloy zone penetration into the parent metals. Tensile Bars—Commercially rolled copper pieces in. thick or zirconium sheet pieces 1/32 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam were placed between commercial 2-S aluminum rod 1 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam. This sandwich in turn was slipped into a 2-S aluminum sleeve 1.438 in. OD and 1.370 in. ID. This sleeve lined the couple up and prevented the aquadag lubricant from getting in between either the A1-Cu or Al-Zr interfaces. Immediately prior to the specimen assembly, the copper or zirconium was abraded on the flat surfaces with 320 grit silicon carbide paper, producing clean smooth surfaces. The aluminum was chemically cleaned just before assembly by: l—degrease in acetone, 2—distilled water rinse, 3—immersion for 3 min in 5 pct NaOH at 70" to 80°C, 4—distilled water rinse, 5—immersion for 2 min in 50 pct HNO3 solution at room temperature, 6—distilled water rinse, and 7—drying in a blast of gas. After the A1-Cu sandwiches were hot pressed and ejected, the specimens were machined such that the aluminum sleeve was removed, and the remaining aluminum was then threaded; the bar so produced was tested later for tensile strength. In all the instances where Al-Cu couples were tested, the specimens broke during the test at the Cu-A1 interface and never within the aluminum or copper. The ultimate tensile strength values at times showed considerable scatter for a set of given reaction conditions. Because of this, as many as three to five specimens were made for a particular set of conditions. The trend of the average tensile strengths obtained was not as conclusive as was the trend of the maximum tensile strengths, the latter values being obtained under optimum reaction conditions. Therefore, the values of ultimate tensile strength given herein are maximums.

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development.
