The construction of a new breaker at the Cranberry Colliery, Hazleton, Pa., was forced upon the operators, A. Pnrdee & Co., by a fire which destroyed the entire plant early in January, 1896. The loss included, in addition to the breaker, three boilerhouses and three engine-houses. The boilers were not injured, but the steam-pipes and connections were all broken and warped by the fire. The boilers were probably saved from injury by the presence of mind of the fireman., who started all his feed-pumps and filled the boilers with water. The hoisting-engines were more or less warped and cracked, but by patching and replacing the injured and broken parts, they were made to do satisfactory service in the new plant. It may be worthy of mention that the wrought-iron shaft of one of the hoisting-drums, 12 inches in diameter by 17 feet long, was so heated in the fire that the weight of the drum caused it

The experiments described in this publication were inspired by the Bell System's large interest in lead-alloy sheathed cables and by the wide range of fatigue and corroding conditions to which they are sometimes subjected in service. The first experiments consisted of operating specimens of lead + I per cent antimony telephone cable sheath alloy in a fatigue test while they were immersed in water taken from a manhole. Because of many published reports concerning corrosion-fatigue phenomena of various metals and alloys, a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1)2 Instead, however, the fatigue test ran on for many times the normal number of cycles an4 was finally stopped without failure. THE use of cadmium as a base for bearing metals is one of the most interesting recent developments in this field. It has caused a strong demand for cadmium and a marked rise in its price. It appeared to the authors, therefore, that the situation might be relieved for users if accept-able substitutes could be developed. A preliminary investigation has revealed that to some extent mercury may be substituted for cadmium. Whether its use is justified cannot be stated at this time. Most of the authors' work has indicated that the addition of mercury to alloys of cadmium and nickel detracts from their desirable physical properties; but this work has not been extended to cover service tests, which might reveal that the addition of low percent-ages of mercury to the cadmium-base alloys would improve their per-formance. Many firms in the minerals industry are facing enormous capital-equipment requirements for existing operations, planned expansion programs, pollution control systems, etc. Yet, because of existing economic conditions, mining companies find it increasingly difficult to obtain reasonable financing for the acquisition of large, high-cost capital equipment. One way of obtaining the use of mining and other major pieces of high-cost capital equipment is through leasing. The popularity of this approach is evidenced by the growing number of leasing companies, equipment manufacturers, and financial institutions now offering this service to their customers. Indeed, leasing has become a billion-dollar industry, and many commercial banks have developed sizeable portfolios in this area. "Should we buy or lease?" This question eventually comes up whenever a mining company needs additional major capital assets. SEVERAL articles have recently been published discussing the conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperatures in the open-hearth steel furnace. In the course of a study of refractories service conditions in steel furnaces, the present writers have taken tempera; tunes in several open-hearth shops in the Pittsburgh district. The conclusions, as to conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperature, are somewhat at variance with those of other investigators. The subject is closely connected both with the close-control of steel-making and the prevention of overheating of the silica refractories used in roofs and walls. It is becoming more and more important to obtain furnace temperatures of fairly definitely known accuracy. At present, the most useful instrument for such measurements is the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer. This method of measurement has formed the basis of most other discussions on the. subject and was also used by the writers.

A letter has been received by the Secretary of the Institute from Mr. C. W. Purington, Honorary. Secretary of the. American Committee of Engineers in London, whose offices are at 6, Copthall Avenue, London, E. C. 2, which will be of interest to any member who may be intending to go to England. Mr. Purington says: "A Committee of Americans has been formed here, consisting mostly of Mining Engineers, and those interested-in mining and allied industries. We should be very glad, among other duties, to give assistance to any American engineers arriving in England on official business connected with the war. This assistance would probably take the form of offering advice and hints as to saving time in approaching British official Departments, and generally in getting. about." This Committee of Engineers was organized with the approval of the American Ambassador to Great Britain, who has recommended its services to the United States Government in connection with the conduct of the war.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing. committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. INITIAL development of the south orebody at San Manuel is being carried out from the No. 1 and No. 2 shafts. The haulage and grizzly levels are being driven to develop the upper one third of the massive hydrothermally altered and fractured monzonite orebody. This first haulage level has been placed at the 1475-ft level with a grizzly level 60 ft above. The grizzly level will be connected to all service shafts so that men and supplies can come down to the grizzly level and go to working places without congesting the haulage level. These connections are also a vital part of the ventilation plan. The haulage level is being advanced along the north and south fringes of the orebody and connections are being driven to the three shafts now under construction. The No. 1 and No. 2 shafts will serve the development work with supplies, skip hoisting, and ventilation at each shaft and the two shafts are connected on both the grizzly and haulage level.

TOTAL global war is making extraordinary demands on the oil industry. Huge quantities of 100-octane gasoline, extreme service lubes, toluene and other miscellaneous products are required. 100-octane gasoline is blended from isopentane, base stock, and alkylate. Isopentane is fractionated from natural or refinery gasoline; but since only limited quantities of base stock can be made in this way, catalytic cracking is rapidly becoming the major source of base stock. Alkylate, the most important component, is synthesized from isobutane and an olefin. Extraordinary demands are forcing the full utilization of all present sources and the development of new supplies of feed stocks. Fortunately, the United States finds itself with well-developed processes already available, and this is true of the manufacture of lubricating oil as well. Toluene is now being produced by new methods from special cuts fractionated from selected crudes or from catalytically processed naphthas. Designers of refinery equipment are modifying past practices to conserve every bit of material possible.

ONE of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.1 During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time required for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error.2~3 This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the KACA.4 By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, 100, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time for rupture on stress, temperature, com- position, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the KACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given com- position and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efficiency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. THEORY The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 eveloped by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate- process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. Building up the USSR's economic strength was the result of all the achievements and successes of our economy. The Soviet Union was the first to begin planned guidance of the economy. The mining industry of the USSR, which holds the first place in the world output of mining production, has always been considered as the main raw materials basis of the country's economy. High and stable development rates are a feature of planned economic management, based on the social ownership of the means of production. During the past ten years from 1965 to 1875 the national income used for consumption and accumulation increased practically by 1.9 times. There has been no inflation, no unemployment in the Soviet Union for about forty years already. High and stable growth rates of the production of mining industries and that of the branches, which are their direct consumers are characterized by the data in table I. The achievements and successes of the economy's development are to a great extent determined by the three planning components, which are as follows:

ON Oct. 5, 1926, the day before the general ses-sions of the fall meeting of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at Pittsburgh, a round table conference on the combus-tibility and testing of coke was held at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station. There were about fifty present, with A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist of the Bureau of Mines, as chairman. The following organi-zations were represented: American Institute of Min-ing and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, American Gas Association, Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, Gas and Fuel Division of, American Chemical Society, and Southern Ohio Pig Iron and Coke Association. In opening the proceedings, Mr. Fieldner explained that the meeting had been called at the suggestion of several members of the Institute and members of other organizations. The subject is of interest to the pro-ducer and the user of coke whether it be in a blast furnace, cupola furnace, house-heating furnace, open grate, gas producer, or in a water-gas generator. There has been much confusion on this subject largely because there is no common definition of combustibility. Does the blast-furnace superintendent, the coke-oven operator, and the fuel engineer have the same under-standing of the term "combustibility"? If a common understanding can be reached, many differences of opinion will disappear. COMBUSTIBILITY OF COKE R. H. Sweetser of Columbus, Ohio, disagreed with the statement of P. H. Royster, T. L. Joseph, and S. P. Kinney in Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2524, of the Bureau of Mines, in which it was stated that the coke-oven op-erator cannot change coke combustibility by modifying oven practice. Mr. Sweetser held that the coke-oven man can change the combustibility of coke. Blast-furnace men know that coke that will burn easily with low pressure and will. come down in the regular way in the furnace can be pro-duced from a given mixture of coal. His idea of the combustibility of coke is the rate of flow through the com-bustion zone of the blast furnace. If the coke does not pass through in normal manner it is highly incombustible. H. J. Rose of the Koppers Co., Pittsburgh, objected to being pinned down so closely on this phase of the com-bustibility and incombustibility of coke. Coke-oven men are frequently obliged to change oven conditions to make a coke which gives blast-furnace men what they want. The size of the coke and the screening have an important bear-ing on combustibility, and there are many cases on record where by simply changing the different sizes of the coke, everything worked smoothly, and that is a much more combustible coke.

One of the best known of the early mining districts of Nevada was that at Eureka, where gold was first produced in 1864. While the most productive period for the district was during the early 1900s, production was maintained until World War II. During this time it is said that the Eureka district produced as much as $200 million from over 3,200 km (2,000 miles) of tunnels and workings. The Windfall Mine was discovered in 1902; and a 100 ton cyanide plant was operated there during the periods 1907 to 1912 and 1932 to 1940. Since 1974, however, Windfall Venture has been operating a unique heap leaching facility on the site of the old Windfall Mine. Gold at the Windfall occurs primarily in the Cambrian Hamburg dolomite which has been "sanded" and in which the original cementing material has been destroyed. The gold is micron sized and is accompanied by anomalous amounts of arsenic and mercury; however, the ore is low in base metals which distinguishes it from the typical Eureka district ores. Mining the ore causes it to break down into very fine sizes, approximately 50% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Conventional heap leaching by spraying proved to be impossible; and extensive test work on alternate methods, aided by the United States Bureau of Mines, was conducted using 9 m (30 ft) high columns and then large tonnage heaps. The leaching procedure adopted was to build 10.6 m (35 ft) high heaps on a 50 mm (2 in.) asphalt pad covered with a layer of gravel for drainage assisted by perforated pipe drains and gravel-packed sumps. A berm is constructed around the top of each pad and cyanide solution is allowed to “pond” on top of the heap. The resulting percolation is at the rate of 24 liters per sq m per hr (0.6 gal per sq ft per hr), a figure about 2.4 times the average used in other heap leaching operations. The dolomite furnishes its own protective alkalinity and no lime or caustic is used in the solution which contains 0.4 kg per mt (0.8 lb per st) of NaCN. Pregnant solution from the heaps averages about 0.7 g Au per mt (0.02 oz per st) with a cyanide content of about 0. 2 kg per mt (0.4 lb per st) and a pH of plus 9. Addition of NaCN brings the pH of the leach solution up to 11 to 12. Carbon adsorption of the gold was originally done in six enclosed columns mounted in a trailer but five conventional columns have been substituted as the size of the operations has increased. THE vapor phase deposition of molybdenum and tungsten from the hexacarbonyls has been thoroughly investigated by Lander and Germer1 and shown to yield well-bonded coatings on a variety of hot metallic surfaces. They also demonstrated that chromium coatings2.3 could be similarly deposited, but did not investigate this metal extensively. Recently,4 conditions have been described by which this compound can be prepared in quantities sufficient for laboratory scale plating experiments, and it is the purpose of the present communication to outline the results of preliminary experiments upon the plating of chromium from its carbonyl. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig I. At one end, connected by a short length of rubber tubing, is a Cenco Hypervac 20 pumping continuously. At the opposite end is a needle valve which allows a small stream of purified hydrogen to flow through the apparatus. Connected in series are a trap T1, maintained at the temperature of dry ice and acetone, the plating chamber, and two traps T2 and T3 containing crystals of the carbonyl. T2 is kept in a constant temperature bath (not shown), while T3 is at room temperature. Stopcock S6 allows the hydrogen flow to by-pass the carbonyl traps. A McLeod gauge is connected so that it can measure the pressure at the pump through Ss, or the pressure at the plating chamber through S9 and S6. The standard (12 liter) volume connected by S5 is used to determine the volume included by S4, S6, Se, S10, the needle valve and the McLeod gauge. Knowledge of this volume allows calibration of the flow of hydrogen. The apparatus* is built entirely of pyrex, except for the needle valve, the rubber connection to the Hypervac, and the cover of the plating chamber. The plating chamber is water-jacketed, with a large brass top allowing insertion of the specimen to be plated. Set into the brass top is a ground glass stopper through which thermocouple leads are sealed. The thermocouple wires (pure Pt, and 87 pct Pt-13 pct Rh) serve the double purpose of measuring the specimen temperature and suspending it in the chamber. Surrounding the chamber is the coil of an induction heater, H. The apparatus is designed to allow variation of the following conditions: I, the specimen temperature, from room temperature to about 1000°C, 2, the carbonyl vapor pressure, from 40 to 220 microns, and 3, the hydrogen flow. In this paper, it is proposed to outline a method for the determination of melting points of those metals and alloys having high fusion temperatures. The application of the method as used to determine the melting points of alloys of tungsten and molybdenum will be given. It will be seen from these results that tungsten and molybdenum form a completely isomorphous series. This is also verified by the accompanying photomicrographs. Tungsten and molybdenum have been found to crystallize in the same system namely, isometric, and the crystal units are cubes. These determinations were made by examining etching pits in the pure metals.

MUCH has been written and said recently about the methods used and materials and equipment employed in building the long tubes that criss-cross a great part of the [ ] united States, like the pattern of a spider's web. This paper will discuss the fundamentals of design of these lines from the economic as well as the engineering view-point, pointing out the effect of the volumes transported, and the load factor at which they are operated, on the unit costs of transportation, as well as the effects on costs of the character of the fluids the lines are called upon to handle. Generally speaking, crude-oil pipe lines carry oil from the producing fields to the [ ] refineries. Sometimes part of the journey is by pipe line to a coastal point and tank ships are employed for the rest of the trip.
