The petition for the formation of a Tulsa Section was granted. The final budget for the year 1917, and the tentative budget for the year 1918, were adopted. The Secretary was instructed to continue to send the Bulletin to all members whose dues have been remitted on account of their being in the war service, but to hold the Transactions and send them on request to the address furnished for the purpose. The issues of the Bulletin were presented to the Federal Fuel Administration, at its request, with the compliments of the Institute. Fifty-nine Members, five Associates, and fifteen Junior Members were elected. The resignation of one member was accepted. The clues of four members who are on active duty at the front were remitted. An extension of time for the payment of clues was granted to four members, upon request.

The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. 'An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

This paper outlines the geophysical investigation of the area covering the D arrow salt dome, Louisiana. Surveys with the refraction seismograph and torsion balance failed to disclose the dome, but reflection dip shooting was successful and was confirmed by later drilling. Introduction The D arrow salt dome and oil field lies in western Ascension Parish, Louisiana, on the outside of a sharp bend and on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The dome occurs about 30 miles south of Baton Rouge and 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. Its geology, shape and structure have been ably described in detail by Carroll E. Cook' and, except for the general features, will not be repeated here. The purpose of this paper is to record some of the interesting and pertinent geophysical data contributing to the discovery of the dome and eventually the oil field. The salt dome is circular in outliie and comes to within about 4625 it. of the surface. At this depth the diameter of the salt plug is approximately 4800 it. The dome has only a thin cap rock of less than 75 ft. Some oil has been found and is being produced in Miocene sands above the cap rock, but most of the field's production comes from a narrow ring of wells around the east and south flanks of the dome. Producing horizons on the flank are found at 5670 to 5840 ft. in the Miocene and 6890 to 6985 ft., 7028 to 7060 ft. and 8260 to 8270 ft. in the Oligocene. The deepest well that has been drilled is the Humble Oil and Refining Company's Community B-5, on the south flank of the structure, which reached a depth of 10,013 feet. The size and shape of the field and the area of production are indicated on Fig. I. The lie showing the area of production encloses all wells now producing and all abandoned producers, both on the top and flank of the dome. This line of production is shown on all subsequent geophysical maps as a direct means of comparing the early geophysics to later drilling development. Darrow dome occurs on the low, flat flood plain of the Mississippi River; it is protected from flood overflow by high artificial levees. The rich loamy soil supports a high degree of cultivation, principally sugar cane. Drainage is secured by many small canals and the water table of the area is at or near the surface. These particular conditions of topography, drainage and top soil greatly influenced the early geophysical picture, and the influence was always unfavorable.

On May 19th, 1857, an English patent was granted to E. A. Cowper for heating air or other gases under pressure by means of a regenerator inclosed in an air-tight iron case, having between the regenerator and case a lining of brick. This patent provided for heating the stoves by a separate fireplace, or by gas direct from the blast furnace. A number of forms of interior arrangement of the brickwork are shown in the drawings; also hollow poppet valves with hollow stems, and a pipe inside of the stem for circulating the water; the valve seats have coil cast in them for water circulation to keep them cool; slide valves, with snake coil cast in the discs, are shown, and the use of cold air for cooling the valves is also described. The combustion-chamber of these stoves was central, and openings mere provided at the top and bottom to get into the stoves. These Cowper stoves are all circular in section. November loth, 1865, an English patent was granted to Thomas Whitwell for regenerative stoves for heating air or gas, provided with cleaning openings at the top and bottom capable of being closed with firebrick plugs and doors. The drawings show a rectangular stove inclosed in an iron case. The interior brickwork has numerous upand-down passages through the stove, but there is no claim on the interior construction. March 3d, 1868, an English patent was granted to Charles Cochrane for a slide valve to be subjected to high heats. The disc of this valve was hollow, and had a circulation of water through it by the two hollow stems that operated it. The valve-seat was detachable and had a coil cast in it, through which water circulated. The valve and seat were placed on an incline to the body to cause the valve-disc to lie on the valve-seat. A cap was placed on the bottom of the body to get at the interior readily. January 5th, 1870, an English patent was granted to Siemens, Cowper and Cochrane for the construction of regenerators in firebrick stoves, with numerous vertical passages of sufficient size to allow a brush to pass through and clean them. These passages had slight projections on the sides to tarn the air over and over as it passed through. At the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in February, 1923, the Chairman of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence appointed a sub-committee to work out a form of questionnaire and to collect data on subsidence and ground movement resulting from underground metal and coal-mining operations, and on ground movement and safe slopes in connection with open-cut metal-mining operations. The author was requested to take charge of the collection of data and the preparation of a questionnaire in connection with the Committee's studies of open-cut metal-mining operations. This paper is a summary of the work carried on and information received therefrom up to February, 1924. The first approach to the problem of safe slopes is to gather all information that pertains to finished slopes; in other words, the steepest economic angle from the horizontal that will stand in order to uncover the ores to be mined and be safe while the extraction of the ore at the base of these slopes is in progress. Whether or not this angle is 35" or 45" depends on many factors. The number of benches maintained to take care of falling rock and their height and width are direct functions of this overall slope. The slope is here taken to mean the angle from the top edge of the pit through the edges of the respective lower benches to the bottom of the pit. If we accept this definition of the slope, it might save some confusion as there would be a difference if one took the line from the top edge of excavation to the toe of the bottom slope. This latter slope would not be constant, but would vary with the number of benches. The depth of the various ore faces will vary, of course, depending on the deposit; Table 1 shows this to range from 50 ft. to 1100 ft. The geology is an important factor, as are the climatic conditions under which one is operating. A saturated condition in some rock structure causes rock flows; in the Panama Canal excavation, slides have run on a ratio of as low as one on ten, which is a 10 per cent. grade, or a slope of less than 6' with the horizontal. Slopes as steep as 60' have been noted in the Utah Copper operations, so that a wide divergence will possibly be met. THE production record of the Sinclair-Moren pool, in southeast Young County, Texas, demonstrates that under efficient operating methods a single well may obtain normal oil recovery from an area of 100 acres or more. This record is the more surprising in view of relatively adverse reservoir conditions such as lack of water drive, moderate initial reservoir pressures and a consolidated sandstone reservoir with original permeability greatly reduced by processes of lithification. This case history is considered worthy of special study in view of the ever present problem of proper spacing of wells. Cupidity, abetted by the unrestrained law of capture, has in too many instances guided development and production methods without regard for sound economic and engineering principles. Largely as a result of ill advised spacing of wells, many oil fields have brought financial losses instead of deserved profit to those using capital, time and energy in this important business of adequately meeting the petroleum requirements of what is known as our modern civilization. In March 1923, the Sinclair Oil and Gas Co. obtained initial daily production of about 12,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 1100 bbl. of oil in its first well near the center of a 372-acre lease on the L. P. Moren land, James Rose survey, Abstract 245. This exploratory test was drilled as a geological prospect of average promise, on a plunging anticline with possibly 10 ft. of closure as mapped on the outcropping limestone of upper Canyon (Pennsylvanian) age. In subsurface, the top of the producing res-ervoir is 16 ft. lower in this well than in the highest wells but probably 25 ft. above lowest closing contour. Wells No. 2 and 3 were drilled about 1/4 mile west and southwest near a normal fault with some 30 ft. of downthrow to the southwest. The producing sand was reached at a depth of 2512 ft. and drilled to 2529 ft. in the first well. This sandstone reservoir is of Millsap Lake (middle Strawn, upper Cherokee) age. It was absent in the second and third wells, which were abandoned at the depths of 3725 or more. In April 1925, a fourth well was drilled 600 ft. east and 24 ft. lower for top of sand than No. I. Production of about 100 bbl. daily was reported from 2521 to 2562 after an 80-quart shot. This well was drilled to 4560 ft., plugged back to 2575 and shot again; but was abandoned soon thereafter because of small production.

Wherever salt is extracted from the ground as an artificial brine produced by pumping down fresh water to dissolve the salt, subsidence of the overburden is a possibility, though apparently few cases of such subsidence have been noted and detailed records are wanting. This description is intended as a record of subsidence that may permit the forcasting of similar occurrences in other cases; the data were supplied largely by R. B. Lee, city engineer of Hutchinson, Kans. About eleven years ago, ground movement occurred at a neighboring salt plant, when the surface assumed the form of a shallow funnel. Movement was probably due to a flow of sand into a well through a poor seal or a broken casing. The salt deposit increases in thickness from the east until at Hutchinson, where the subsidence occurred, it is about 310 ft. thick. The interbedded layers of shale vary in thickness from mere traces to about 7 ft. While knowledge of the shale content of the beds is not exact, the log of a shaft 3 miles east of Hutchinson indicates that shale forms about 25 per cent. of the total thickness. This shaft does not reach the bottom of the salt by about 60 ft., but there is no reason to think that the lower part of the bed is different from the upper. Logs of wells sunk to the bottom are not sufficiently detailed to be of much value. Above the salt is the shale of the well-known Red Beds. The thickness of this is variable, principally because of its eroded surface, but at the mine it is 340 ft. This shale is variable in character and strength, but contains no strong members of limestone or sandstone. If the support is removed, very probably it will subside. The Arkansas River flows across the salt district and Hutchinson is situated on the flood plain. Between the top soil, which is about 8 ft. thick, and the shale is 60 to 100 ft. of water-bearing sand and gravel. The process of removing salt, at least in the case of the earlier wells with which we are concerned, is as follows: An 8-in. hole is put down through the sand and gravel by means of a drive pipe, which is bedded in the shale. Prom the top of the shale, a 6411. hole is drilled through the shale, to, or nearly to, the bottom of the salt. Casing is put in to a depth of about 140 ft. to shut off a water-bearing layer in the shale.

IN a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on "Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron produced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the "furnace .book," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable causes which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. Of the first class are the character of the materials charged, and their relative proportions, their mechanical conditions, as wet or dry, large or small pieces, etc., the revolutions of the engine, the heat and pressure of blast, and the distribution of the charge. Of the second class are the number of pounds of air blown into the furnace for each stroke of the engine, the amount of moisture in the air, and the condition of the chimney draughts. These vary largely with the season of the year. Of the third. class is the leaking of a tuyere or a temporary stoppage. To keep a record of this kind for a whole year, it is only necessary to procure a sheet of common profile or cross section paper, about 38 inches long and 8 or 10 inches wide, with cross lines ruled about 0.1 of an inch apart. ThE superior performance of nonsag tungsten wire in lamps has been ascribed to the large-grained micro-structure that can be developed in it. The orientations of these large grains have been studied several times; most published data1-' appear to be similar to those plotted in Fig. 1. These new data were obtained by X-ray back-reflection Laue technique from all of the large grains occurring in thirteen different wires that had been heated at the lowest possible temperature for the formation of large grains. Here the wire axis is plotted in terms of the principal directions of the cube. Rosi decided that the preferred orientation of the large crystals could be described by a single ideal orientation, (531), being parallel to the wire axis.' Rieck2,3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Seigle argued that the data suggest that (211) is parallel to the wire axis instead of a single ideal orientation.5 This {211} contains the (531) ideal orientation and would appear to be a more general case. Ahlborn and Wassermann report that their orientation data stretch from ( 110) through (531) to (311) 8 This is part of the locus of (211). All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by back-reflection Laue techniques. They have all obtained essentially similar results. On the other hand, Swalin and Geisler, who obtained their data by neutron diffraction, indicated that the preferred orientation of the large grains in doped wire is (110) .7 These findings cannot presently be reconciled with the pole density data described in the previous paragraph. Rosi1 and Rieck2 have advanced arguments about how their orientations could occur. Nevertheless, the crystallographic link between the (110) (cold-worked) fiber texture and the preferred orientation of the large grains has remained missing. This link can be provided through the concept of coincidence-type boundaries. Such boundaries separate two grains that have a certain number of common lattice sites. Coincidence relationships that result from rotations about low index directions are given by Brandon et a1 .' What is desired is a calculation of those orientations that bear a coincidence relationship with the (110) fibers of the cold-worked matrix. This situation arises in the following fashion. Heating the tungsten wire for a combination of time and temperature falling short of the formation of the nonsag structure yields a structure that is still fibrous in nature and the preferred orientation remains (110). During grain growth, the growing grain is in contact with these fibers. It is hence possible that the entire process may begin by the passage of a coincidence boundary into a (110) fiber. The calculations were carried out analytically and checked graphically. Following Brandon et a1.,8 coincidence relationships from 1 in 5 to 1 in 19 have been considered. The results of the calculations are given in Fig. 2. Of the coincidences examined, some of those occurring upon rotation about ( 110) come closest to the experimental points in Fig. 1. Nineteen of the twenty-three data points in Fig. 1 can be attributed to the ideal orientations A, B, C, and D in Fig. 2. As determined analytically, three crystals lie within 4 deg of point A, four lie within 21/2 deg of point B, eleven lie within 5 deg of point C, and one lies within 1 deg of point D-a total of nineteen. The off-lying points are near the |110| point of the triangle.

The extent of losses, due to evaporation, sediment, and water, in crude oil stored in steel tanks, is a very interesting question, and particularly so at this time, when every reasonable measure should be employed to eliminate all possible losses of this important natural product. Available information on this subject is incomplete; e.g., during the development of the Cushing Field, considerable surplus oil was stored in steel tanks, but from time to time, owing to changes in weather, some losses by evaporation and short storage room on the leases, these tanks were topped out, thus rendering inaccurate any system designed to determine the average rate of evaporation or other losses of the oil over a given period. Furthermore, the losses, as shown by the records at the time, as a result of hasty gages, failed to take into account the temperature and gravity of the oil. Losses may be classified roughly as occurring from evaporation, presence of sediment and water, and leakage. The coefficient of expansion and contraction of crude oil, in relation to temperature conditions, is of material importance; also, the rate of evaporation is dependent upon the gravity of the oil, as the escape of the lighter hydrocarbons in fresh Cushing oil, of from 40 to 42 gravity, on a warm day is considerable, and from available records of temporary storage, it is safe to assume that a loss of 1 to 11/2 per cent. in volume will easily occur in light crude oil of Cushing grade over a period of 6 months, including the summer season. The presence of sediment, water, and other impurities, in the oil will also cause more or less deterioration in quality, particularly when the fresh production is run direct from the gage tanks, or from the wells on the lease to steel storage, as is often the case when an oil field is being rapidly developed. The bad oil will settle to the bottom of the tanks and may be determined by thiefing and running a centrifuge test on the sample. The amount of water in the oil depends entirely on the conditions under which it is produced. Australian rutile was chlorinated in the presence of CO or carbon. The chlorination velocity in CO was found to be strongly influenced by temperature and proportional to the CO concentration, but independent of the Cl, concentration. In the presence of carbon, the reaction velocity is much higher. The reactivity of the carbon and the distance between the carbon and the rutile surfaces are important variables. The reaction velocity is approximately proportional to the Cl, concentration and independent of the CO concentration of the surrounding atmosphere. Experiments with fluidized-bed chlorination of carbon-rutile mixtures indicate that the motion of the bed has little influence on the reaction velocity. At low temperatures, the chlorination velocity of dense tablets is much greater than that of TiO, coke mixtures suitable for fluidization. The reaction mechanism is discussed. In the industrial production of TiCl, rutile is chlorinated in the presence of carbon. Disregarding intermediate steps, the reaction may be expressed by the following equations: The ultimate object of this study was to find out whether the reaction velocity was higher in fluidized bed operation compared with chlorination of pelle-tized carbon-rutile mixtures. From a literature survey and preliminary experiments it was learned that some basic knowledge about the reaction mechanism was needed for a good experimental design. Therefore the following sets of experiments were carried out: 1) Studies on the reaction velocity in the chlorination of rutile with CO as the only reducing agent. 2) Chlorination of separate rutile-carbon tablets. 3) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets at different temperatures with various kinds of carbon, various grain sizes, and various tablet-making techniques. This series of experiments was carried out not only with pure chlorine but also with mixtures of chlorine with argon, CO and CO,. 4) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets made in a strictly standardized manner. 5) Chlorination of static-bed rutile-carbon mixtures. 6) Fluidized-bed chlorination of the same mixture. The experiments 4 to 6 formed the final and direct test of the main question: Static bed vs fluidized bedo. Although there are many patents and papers dealing with the general aspects of chlorination, only few experiments from which detailed information can be obtained have been reported in the literature. Pamfilov and coworkersl3 have studied chlorination of TiO, with CO or carbon as the reducing agent. They found that the weight decrease per hour at 600o to 800°C amounted to 11 to 14 pct with CO and 45 to 51 pct with carbon. They suggest that phosgene might be an intermediate in the chlorination of TiO,. Takimoto and Hattori have chlorinated reduced titanium oxide (TiO) and found a very high rate of TiC1, -production. They proved that the composition of the gas from the chlorination of rutile-carbon mixtures contained mainly CO. They reported for instance 74.7 pct CO, and 5.6 pct CO at 800°C at which temperature the Boudouard equilibrium composition is 12 pct CO and 88 pct CO. Seligman and Segerchano6 have studied the chlorination of TiO. They proved that Ti0 and chlorine react rather rapidly at temperatures as low as 300°C. Above 400°C, the reaction was complete. At 500°C the velocity of this reaction was much higher than was chlorination of TiO, + C. McTaggart,7 Nishimura, et al. and Wilskam have chlorinated mixtures of carbon and various kinds of rutile or beneficated ilmenite. Nishimura, et al. also report the results from reduction of TiO, with H2, CO, or carbon. At 900°C only 1 pct Ti O is formed in 2 hrs. At 1100°C 23.1 pct Ti, 0, was formed if elementary carbon was present. No carbide formation occurred below 1400°C. McIntosh and Cofferll have observed that the CO, content of the exit gases from chlorination of rutile and calcined petroleum coke is appreciably higher than found in the Boudouard equilibrium. At 900°C the ratio (CO, /CO + CO) is about 80 pct, whereas the equilibrium value is about 2 pct. W. E. Dunn12 has studied the chlorination rates of several TiO,-bearing minerals with CO + Cl, or COCl . Chlorinations were carried out either in a fluidized reactor or a fixed-bed reactor, both having a 30-mm diameter. The results obtained in both reactors were comparable. It was proved that benefi-ciated ilmenite (i.e., ilmenite from which the iron oxide had been removed by chlorination) was chlorinated 10 times faster thanrutile. The International Law of the Continental Shelf, so far ratified by 35 nations, extends the national boundary of any coastal nation to the edge of the continental shelf, this normally being at a continuous water depth of 200 m. The Law further extends this boundary to include the floor of the deep ocean to any depth that can be mined by advanced mining technology. In effect, proof of mining can constitute proof of ownership of the subaqueous land and the minerals on or below the sea floor. Irrespective of the fact that present technology is too limited to permit mineral exploitation in the high seas-and the law regarding the right to mine appears hazy-the U. S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Customs, has a ruling that would further deter mining operations on the high seas. This law contends that minerals mined on the continental shelf of the United States are actually mined within the continental United States and are free of tariff, but mined products or other articles obtained from the ocean or the sea floor beyond the continental shelf, if brought into this nation, must be considered as imported and are subject to such customs duties as are applicable under the tariff schedules of the United States.
