The transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,1 of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. Identification and analysis of mining hazards involves the correlation of accident, injury and illness information from all segments of the mining industry. It would not be feasible to process the volume of data involved without substantial reliance upon a computerized information system similar to that maintained by the Health and Safety Analysis Center. Numerous statistical programs are applied to the computerized accident-injury-illness data base to identify those mining tasks and associated activities which are responsible for most of the injuries and occupational illnesses. These programs are used to flag those mining tasks or conditions at specific mines or segments of the mining industry where either a significant increase in the injury/illness trend has been reported or where the number of injuries/illnesses related to specific mining tasks or conditions are high. Upon identification of those mining hazards which warrant further analysis, a computerized search of the coded accident data is performed to correlate the predominant categories by cause of injury or illness, source of injury, nature of injury, type of accident, etc. From this correlation, those factors most common to the conditions responsible for the hazard may be identified. Based upon analyses of this form, recommendations are made regarding the appropriate engineering, training, and/or operational improvements necessary to alleviate the hazard. In addition to mining hazard analysis, the computerized data base also has application in the area of optimum resource allocation. Computer programs have been developed to assist management in allocating resources based upon organizational requirements and historical accident - injury trends.

The mining industry is continually faced with problems involving dewatering, pollution, water supply, leaching and hydrochemical mining and prospecting. Greater application of the principles of ground-water hydrology to solution of these problems promises improved operating efficiency, increased safety and better public relations. Estimating the magnitude of dewatering for a proposed mine may be a major factor in determining the feasibility of proceeding with mine development. Diverting the source of ground water to an abandoned mine may save costly treatment of acid-mine drainage. Development of a large ground-water supply near an ore deposit may enhance the possibilities of a leaching operation. Detection of certain dissolved minerals in water from springs or wells may lead to hitherto unknown mineral deposits. Current efforts of industry, educational institutions and government are making these kind of events more commonplace. Dewatering of Mines The magnitude of dewatering problems was dramatized by a flooding that occurred last year in a gold mine in South Africa. During drilling operations at the West Driefortein mine, a major fracture was encountered from which large volumes of water issued necessitating evacuation of 1350 men from the mine. Dewatering required an increase in pumping of more than 80 million gpd. Models of ground-water systems are being used to test alternate plans for dewatering mines. Using the models in conjunction with computer optimization programs may lead to minimizing costs of operation. In addition to computer simulation of aquifers associated with phosphate deposits in North Carolina mentioned in last year's report, two USGS employees developed a model to estimate the amount of pumping required to dewater a mine site in Colorado.

The temperature, orientation, and strain-rate dependence of tensile flow in single-crystal NiA1 of equiatomic composition have been investigated up to 800°C. Compression tests at room temperature have also been carried out. Optical and replica electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods were used to investigate the slip mechanisms. NiAl exhibits {110)(001) slip and cube slip {l00)(010) was also observed. This results in very high strength of single crystals in cube orientation. The implications of this slip mode, with the resultant small number of possible slip systems and three mutually perpendicular slip vectors, are discussed. ThE CsCl structure compounds represent a class related to the bcc elements, but their behavior is affected by three additional variables: composition (within the stability range of the compound), extent of long-range order perfection, and bonding energy. Very little data are available on the effects of these variables on mechanical properties. Rachinger and ~ottrell' suggested slip to occur along (111) in compounds of low ordering energy; in compounds of higher bond strength (>0.06 ev), they observed (110) (001) slip. As pointed out by copley,' only three in- dependent slip systems are available in the latter case; hence general deformation is impossible. Brown3 carried out a theoretical calculation of the yield-point variation with the degree of long-range order in the CsCl structure, based on the assumption of superdislocations. More general approaches, based on considerations of superlattice dislocations and antiphase domain boundaries in ordered structures, were carried out by Flinn~ and by Vidoz and Brown.' These, however, give no information on changes in the slip structure—if any—between the ordered and the disordered compounds. This aspect was investigated experimentally and theoretically by Stoloff and Davies' and by Marcinkowski and chessin7 in FeCo. The latter workers proposed the deformation behavior of the ordered FeCo to be essentially the same as that in many other bcc metals. Investigations of polycrystalline A~M~'-'O indicate considerable variation in mechanical properties with composition and test temperature. The existence of {123)(111) slip was reported in AgMg.'9'9'0 (The formation energy of this compound, presumed to be ordered at all temperatures below melting, is 4.38 cal per g-atom," i.e., 0.024 ev per bond.) The yield strength has been reported as relatively independent of temperature below 0.45 T, (where T, is the absolute melting temperature). Tensile deformation of single-crystal AgMg was also investigated by Kurf-man," who observed marked tendency to single glide on{112}(111) and {110)(111). IN an article on magnesium and its alloys, Gann and Winston1 stated that manganese has a limited solubility in the liquid state. W. Schmidt2 showed a diagram according to Joseph Ruhrmann indicating that the solubility of manganese in liquid magnesium falls from about 2.65 per cent at 790°C. to about 0.5 per cent at 695°C. The curve was extrapolated to show zero solubility at the melting point of pure magnesium (Fig. I): This work suggested that at the lowest manganese contents it was not possible to detect either a eutectic or the formation of a solid solution, so that manganese was stated to be present in the structure as large individual crystals. Two years after the presentation of these results, Gann3 brought evidence to show that some manganese is capable of dissolving to form a solid solution, any excess of manganese present then assuming chiefly the form of small blue-gray particles scattered throughout the primary magnesium crystals, occasionally in clusters but seldom at the boundaries. He presented micrographs of cast alloys containing o.1, 0.4 and 1.0 per cent manganese that show a small amount of coring around the individual particles due to solid solution, and indicate that the location of the manganese particles is closely associated with the original dendritic structure of the primary crystallization. He also pointed out that the amount of manganese that can be dissolved in magnesium depends on the amount of other alloying elements present, the effect of the second alloying element being to decrease the amount of manganese retained in the alloy. E. Schmid and G. Siebe14 have determined the solid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature by means of precision X-ray diffraction measurements. They found that the solubility is 3.4 per cent at 645°C and decreases to practically zero at 200°C. It is apparent that the X-ray diffraction measurements of Schmid and Siebel are not in agreement with the results of Ruhrmann as presented by Schmidt. This disagreement, and also the lack of data on magnesium-aluminum-manganese and magnesium-zinc-manganese systems, led the author to the present investigation, to determine accurately the liquid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method for making solubility determinations consists of saturating the molten magnesium or the alloys with manganese at various temperatures and analyzing the dip samples taken from these melts. Melting is carried out in a cylindrical steel pot heated by an electric resistance furnace. The pot had a metallic outside coating to protect the steel against oxidation, and a graphite inside lining to prevent the contamination of the melt by prolonged contact with iron. The inside diameter of the pot was 4 in. and the depth 12 inches.

If some solution-quenched supersaturated aluminum solid solutions, e.g.., Al(Cu), are plastically deformed at room temperature and then aged at 200oC, the hardness may first decrease before increasing in the usual manner ' A similar transient softening is observed, even in the absence of plastic deformation, when a thin foil or small-diameter wire Al(Cu) specimen is rapidly quenched from the solution-treatment temperature and then aged.' Also, some solution-quenched and neutron-irradiated alloys undergo an initial hardness decrease during subsequent aging.3 The usual explanation of the transient softening in the above examples involves the effect of vacancies introduced by plastic deformation, rapid quenching, and neutron irradiation, respectively However, the mechanism of softening is not unequivo-cably established. In the first-noted case, Gane and parkins' observed that the softening was approximately proportional to the difference in the atomic diameters of solute and solvent, and it was argued that, if a large relative difference in atomic diameter promoted vacancy-assisted room-temperature solute diffusion to dislocations, dislocation climb occurring during subsequent aging at 200°C could cause transient softening. Some substantiation of this theory was offered by the additional observation that discontinuous yielding of solution-quenched polycrystalline Al(Cu) tensile specimens was suppressed by interrupting the test for a short aging treatment at 200°C. Of course, reversion (resolution of GPI) at 200°C would also cause softening, and Sil-cock4 expressed the opinion that the softening in the case of Al(Cu) must be partly associated with reversion. Also, Hirsch5 commented on the possibility that, if jogs cause hardening, an anneal at 200°C should straighten the jogged dislocations and result in softening. However, parkins' has re-expressed his belief that these mechanisms are not entirely consistent with the observed serrated stress-strain curves. Experimental. New data has now been obtained for Al(Cu), Al(Ge), Al(Mg), and Al(Zn) primary solid-solution alloys. These alloys were prepared from metals exceeding 99.99 pct purity, and specimens 4 by 4 in. diam were solution-treated, quenched, deformed 10 pct in compression at room temperature, and aged at 200'C in a cottonseed oil bath for various times. Generally, these operations could not be carried out in rapid succession, so the alloys were stored in a freezer between treatments to minimize aging. The variation in hardness with aging time, Figs. 1 to 4, was determined by microhardness testing with a 3.0-kg load. At least five readings were averaged to obtain each data point, and all measurements were taken about the center circumference of each cylinder (region of maximum deformation). Using an expression for the free energy of a homogeneous phase as a function of composition, a relationship is derived which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. Comparisons between observed and calculated phase boundaries in the systems Fe-Ni, Fe-Mn, Fe-W, Ti-Mo, and Ti-Cb are presented. IT is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how the general free energy equations for two phases in equilibrium may be used to derive an expression which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. The free energy per gram atom of a disordered solid solution may, for many purposes, be represented by the equation:' F = ½NZ [C-V,, + (1-C) VbB + 2C (l-C)V] + K(T) +RT[C-lnC+ (l-C)ln(l-C) ] [1] where N is Avogadro's number; Z, the coordination number; C, the concentration of the solute element in atomic percent; the subscripts refer to concentrations at phase mixture boundaries; VAA, VBB, and V,, are the bond energies between like and unlike adjacent atoms, respectively, at the interatomic spacing characteristic of the phase. The bond energies are usually assumed to be independent of small changes in the lattice parameter occasioned by solute additions and variations in temperature; V = VAB ---------------—— ; K(T) is the sum of the heat con- tent and heat entropy; R, the molar gas constant; and T, the temperature in degrees Kelvin. The free energy of a homogeneous phase is there- fore the sum of an internal energy, a specific heat, and a configurational entropy term, respectively. The compositions of two phases in equilibrium at a given temperature are governed by the minimum total free energy principle. Graphically, this is represented by the points of tangency of the tangent common to the free energy vs. concentration curves of the two phases. IF we follow the threads of the mining problems, upon which I have touched, we find them all leading to one great fundamental desideratum. The people of this State, of this Nation, and of this world must be brought to a better understanding of the basic nature of our industry-must be made more mineral-minded. It is my belief 'that there is not a man present among this earnest gathering of those interested in the mining industry, who has not a deep-seated and heartfelt desire that the existing unprecedented welfare and prosperity of the whole mass of American people be maintained not merely through our own generation but through the generations of our children and their children. In the decades to come there can be no question of the keenness of the foreign competition which we are doomed to meet, and in this great international contest that Nation which has the best balanced program of development and that broadness of vision in its governmental direction, which recognizes the necessity of a sympathetic attitude toward the upbuilding of such a broad pro- gram will be the Nation which will maintain and pre- serve that welfare of all of its people.

OUTCROPS of coal have bees discovered is many localities is the Philippine archipelago, and practically all of the larger islands contain deposits of this mineral. Very little prospecting has been done to determine the value of the various coal-bearing areas, but so far as known, the largest and most promising fields are found : (1) is northern Cebu; (2) is the small island of Batan, a part of the province of Albay is southeasten Luzon; (3) is the somewhat larger island of Polillo, off the east coast of Luzon, and (4) is southern Mindoro, sear the small coast tows of Bulalacao. Northern Panay, south-central Cebu, and various localities is southern Luzon, Masbate, Negros, and Mindanao also afford evidences of the existence of coal-beds, the extent and value of which have not yet bees proved. The general position of these islands and districts is shows on the map of a portion of the Philippine Islands, Fig. 1. Some of these coal-fields have been known for many years (coal was discovered is Cebu 1827 and is Batas is 1842),1 and several futile attempts were made by the Spaniards to operate mines is these districts. But owing to many circumstances, chief among which were indifferent management, the political unrest of the islands, natural difficulties of transportation, and those inherent in the mining of steeply-inclined and somewhat irregular seams, no considerable output was ever obtained from any of these mines, and the fuel required is the many departments of industrial and political life has continued to be drawn largely from Australia and Japan. These conditions exist to a great degree at present, and though much interest is the coal-deposits of the Philippines

The progress made to date in the mineral dressing of complex Arkansas titanium ores is reported in this paper. Concentrates of rutile, a dioxide of titanium, were produced by treating a submarginal ore from the Magnet Cove Rutile Co., Inc., Magnet, Ark. The rutile recovery at present is 45 to 50 pct of the total TiO2, with the possibility of increased recovery with additional research. The work reported herein is part of a general study which will later include results of investigation of other titanium ore bodies in the Magnet, Ark., area. The fragile character of the rutile minerals, the softness of the gangue, the occurrence of pyrite and leucoxene, and the considerable proportion of extremely small size rutile in the presence of montmorillonite- and illite-type clays in the Magnet Cove open-pit mine are the important factors in the mineral dressing of this submarginal rutile ore. History The occurrence of titanium minerals in the Magnet Cove area of Arkansas was recognized as early as 1890, but it was not until about 1912 that any appreciable prospecting for the minerals was undertaken. At that time drilling was begun, a shaft was sunk, and several drifts were driven, but beneficiation to recover the titanium minerals was not attempted. The only successful mining and milling operation of the Magnet Cove rutile deposit was begun in 1932 by the Titanium Corp. of America and continued until 1942. The ore was washed by means of a rotary scrubber and then deslimed in a drag classifier. The discharge was ground in a rod mill, classified, and tabled to recover a rougher rutile concentrate, which was screen-sized and retabled on cleaner tables. The cleaner concentrates were given a reducing roast, screen-sized, and magnetically separated to produce a finished rutile concentrate. Most of the rutile produced during this period was sold abroad. In 1942, the Titanium Alloy Corp. of Arkansas (a subsidiary of the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. of New York) purchased the property and rebuilt the mill. Subsequently, the plant and property were acquired by the Magnet Cove Rutile Co., Inc., of Little Rock, Ark., the present owners. Very little titanium has been produced since 1942. Although the Titanium Corp. activities yielded enough returns to allow continued operation for approximately 10 years, certain factors must be recognized. These are: (1) production of rutile in that period was during a low in the economic cycle which permitted low-cost operation on a small scale, and (2) a considerable portion of the production was above the water level and no drainage problems existed. Prior to this paper there has been no published report of any mineral-dressing investigation of the lower levels of the ore body. Reference is made in another paper1 to an earlier investigation of Magnet Cove rutile by the Rolla laboratory, in which it is stated that recoveries of 12 to 17 pct of the rutile were obtained. The present investigation was undertaken to improve the known milling processes and to provide adequate metallurgical information about the ore treatment. Titanium Technology The titanium mineral of primary interest in the present investigation was the titanium dioxide, rutile. Rutile is one of the industrial minerals whose annual consumption is relatively small but strategically important. The domestic production of rutile was 7100 tons in 1948. The imports of rutile in the same year were approximately 8000 tons.2 A major use of rutile is in the production of welding-rod coatings, for which a product containing a minimum of 92 pct titanic oxide is desired. Other constituents, such as lime, silica, and sulphur, must be held to a minimum, but hard-and-fast specifications for these elements cannot be drawn. It is necessary to incorporate the rutile in a welding-rod coating, make a sufficient number of test welds, and then determine the tensile strength of the weld metal in the as-welded and stress-relieved conditions. THE Bingham area in the West Mountain mining district on the eastern slope of the Oquirrh range, some 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has been the most consistent producer for the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, production having been continuous, except for minor interruptions, since the organization of the United States Mining Co. in 1899. This production has come from fissures and mantos largely within limestone members aggregating something less than 10 per cent of a thick quartzite sequence of Pennsylvanian age which has been warped into an open syncline plunging northwesterly. Bedding on the easterly limb dips 10°-45° but steep-ens to 90° and even overturns on the westerly limb. Ore bodies cluster about the more northerly of two elongate interconnecting stocks of monzonite which have risen in an axial position within this syncline. Largely within the more northerly of these stocks is the low-grade copper ore body exploited in the Utah Copper open cut of the Kennecott Copper Corp. The values, in seams, minute fracture fillings, and disseminations of pyrite and silica, pervade not only the stock but adjacent sediments, and form a nebulous, sprawling mass which both mineralogically and geographically is the center of the district. The more southerly of the twin stocks appears to be comparatively inert and without obvious relation to mineralization. which

ATHOUGH the magnesium industry in this country is about thirty years old, not until American industry began to amaze the rest of the world and confound our enemies with the extent and variety of our war production did the industry begin to come into its own. At the outset of the war, only three companies were producing and fabricating magnesium in this country. Today, about sixty companies are producing, casting, forging, extruding, rolling, and stamping this lightweight champion of metals. Experience in alloying, processing. and fabricating the metal gained during the war years is now being translated into hundreds of civilian peacetime applications. In no sense should magnesium be considered as a substitute for other metals. It has come into popular favor because If many unique properties in addition to is being the lightest known structural metal. A TREMENDOUS volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets, strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features in common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are different, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group.

A silicon solid-state array image scanner is described. This paper deals with structural and performance properties of the array which basically consists of PIN photo and gating diodes, and low capacitance isolation diodes. Each chip of the array is composed of an 8 by 9 matrix of photo detector cells; each cell contains one each of the three diode types mentioned. This x-y matrix is read a column at a time with an access delay of approximately 100 nsec per column. It is designed to detect the presence or absence of illumination within 10-mil diam image spots located on a 15- by 15-mil grid. Radiant power level of an illuminated spot is low; of interest is the range around I uw with a of 8400g Structural improvements to the original array which will result THE purpose of this paper is to describe the results of a solid state scanner exploratory development activity. The scanner is intended to sense the presence or absence of low-level illumination falling upon a matrix of 10-mil wide squares arranged on a 15- by 15-mil x-y grid pattern. The light of interest has a wavelength of 8400, characteristic of radiation emitted from a GaAs lasing diode. This wavelength matches well the spectral absorption of silicon,' thus the well-developed silicon processing technology can be applied to fabricating large integrated arrays of PIN photocells to sense the radiation. The illumination state of the cells of the array is read, one column at a time, by addressing a drive line of the particular column in question and examining the state of those sense lines which are orthogonal to the drive Lines of in greater sensitivity at various wavelengths, both above and below 8400Å, and in greater speed are presented. These include variations in diffusion depth, resistivity of N and P regions, isolation techniques, and packaging. Trade-offs between access speed, cycle frequency, and sensitivity are discussed. A packaging approach to achieving an array composed of several chips is described. Requirements on this package are: 1) maintenance of 15- by 15-mil pitch of the light sensitive cell position, therefore positional accuracy of mounted 8 by 9 cell photo detector chips; 2) maintenance of inherent high array speed even though signal levels are low through high density close proximity mounting of monolithic sense amplifier circuitry. the array. One bank of N sense amplifiers is required, where N is the number of photodiode cells in each column of the array. CELL AND CHI" STRUCTURE A photograph of a single monolithic cell is shown in Fig. 1. Each cell is composed of three junctions, an isolation junction, a logic or blocking diode junction, and a photodiode junction; all of these junctions are connected electrically by a common N region. An electrical schematic of four cells of the array is shown in Fig. 2 with the associated driver and sense amplifier circuits in block diagram form.
