POTASH is an essential. It is necessary as an ingredient in fertilizers or as a plant food, and certainly one of the great problems, and one of increasing gravity, is the maintenance of agricultural fertility that we may have adequate food supplies. When one thinks of potash one thinks of Germany. The first and most important deposits of soluble potash salts were found in Germany, and it was through Ger- man research and the application of a highly developed knowledge of chemistry that the value of these deposits was recognized and appreciated in the field of agricultural fertilization. The Germans knew that they had something of great value in their potash resources, not only because of the advantage derived from the extensive use of it in their own intensive farming operations at home, but also because of the pressing need for it on the part of other countries. Appreciating the economic value of this in international trade, they fostered the industry to the fullest extent and devoted much attention to well organized propaganda designed to bring out the essential need for potash of German origin throughout the world. Thus every one came to believe that potash was an essential commodity of only German origin and as such it held an extraordinary position in world trade prior to 1914.

Successful mine exploration requires sound planning and modern exploration techniques, but it also requires perseverance and the right timing. The La Caridad mineral area has been known for over 70 years, but as with many mines, it was not "discovered" until viewed under new economic conditions and exploration philosophies. Present exploration of the La Caridad area began in 1964 and was carried out under a joint Mexican Government-United Nations Project. Detailed exploration was begun by Asarco Mexicana S.A. in late 1968. The geology of the La Caridad deposits conforms, generally, to the "porphyry copper" deposits of Arizona. However, breccias and pegmatites play a very important part in the emplacement of mineralization.

Discussion of the paper of W. W. NORTON, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 92, August., 1914, pp. 1993 to 1999. ARTHUR S. DWIGHT, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Norton's chief argument is directed against the idea that the D. & L. sinter is any better material for the blast furnace than the H. & H. product. He supports this by citing two experimental furnace runs. Reducibility.-To discuss a furnace record like that quoted by Mr. Norton for the five days' run in August, 1912, is manifestly difficult for an outsider, but a possible explanation for the poor reduction on Furnace No. 5, smelting D. & L. sinter, may lie in the fact that both sets of furnaces carried the same fuel charges. Other things being equal, if 11 ½ per cent. coke was right for the furnaces smelting H. & H. product, it Was too much for the furnace smelting D. & L. product, as I shall endeavor to show later, and incipient overfire, accompanied by higher leads in slag and matte, was induced. It may sound like a paradox to say that excessive fuel sometimes produces poor reduction, but it is a sad fact. In certain plants where practically the entire charge to the blast furnaces receives a preliminary treatment by being sintered on the D. & L. machines the peculiarities of this problem have had to be very carefully studied, for serious metallurgical difficulties presented themselves when the change was first made to D. & L. sinter in large quantities. Some of these plants had blast pots before they had D. & L. machines, and many opportunities were afforded for comparative study of this very point. There is reason to believe that, clue to the long period of blowing and the higher temperatures developed in the pots from greater mass action, the iron in the H. & H. product is present chiefly as Fe203, perhaps in the form of ferrites, while in the D. & L. product the iron is present as FeO. The fuel charge in the blast furnace must be so proportioned as to exactly meet the chemical and thermic requirements of reduction and melting. If ally of these functions have been performed before the material enters the furnace, a corresponding allowance should be made or the fuel balance will be disturbed and bad work will result. One of the functions of the coke is to reduce enough metallic Fe for the matte requirements, leaving the remainder of the iron as FeO to go into the slag. In smelting almost any other material than D. & L. sinter the iron must-be reduced from the higher oxides, Fe203 or Fe304, to the protoxide, FeO, before a true comparative basis is reached. Experience has shown that with about one-half D. & L. sinter on the charge the coke should-be cut about 10 per cent. This theoretical benefit is borne out by the practical blast-furnace results on a large scale in numerous plants. In fact, wherever this very important factor is ignored the evil symptoms of excessive fuel will be indicated,

WHEN history is written, the year of the blitzkrieg will go down as giving aviation its greatest impetus. No perceptible drop in military business, even with cessation of hostilities abroad, seems likely. The combined air force of the U. S. Army and Navy on July 1 was approximately 5000 planes, as against 50,000 planes currently discussed as necessary. Observers at the fronts are giving designers and metallurgists back home some realistic ideas to shoot at. As conventional runways reveal the location of airports to enemy raiders, operating bases are now masked. Difficult, often muddy and rough landing strips, requiring strong landing gears and exacting take-off and maintenance characteristics, are the specifications of war. This is "old stuff" to numerous mining operators in mountainous jungle areas where gradients up to 8 per cent are in more or less common use in such mountain landing fields. Although airplane building is not readily adaptable to assembly-line methods, a trend towards mass productions is now in evidence. Incidentally, a U.S. Army "Curtiss P-40" requires about 10,000 man hours of work to complete and is tied together with 75,000 rivets. The microwave region of the radio spectrum was effectively utilized in radar designs during the recent war and it has become of increasing interest in the field of communications. Work in this field has led to an important use for silicon—that of the point contact rectifiers†1 in the frequency converter of microwave (radar or radio) receivers—and has stimulated considerable interest in the electrical properties and preparation of silicon and its alloys. Silicon is an electronic semiconductor. Its conductivity at room temperature results principally from the presence of certain impurities. While for metals an increase in impurity content increases the resistivity, for semiconductors such as silicon the opposite occurs and, in general, the addition of impurities lowers the resistivity. Silicon materials may be classified into one of two groups depending upon the manner in which the impurities contribute to electrical properties. These have been termed for convenience p-type or n-type. P-type silicon develops a very large positive thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of positive sign and a low resistance direction in point contact rectification with the silicon positive with respect to the point. N-type silicon, on the other hand, develops a negative thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of negative sign and a low resistance direction in rectification with the silicon negative with respect to the point. Impurities which produce n-type silicon are called donors inasmuch as these elements contribute to electrical conductivity by donating electrons to an unfilled energy band in the silicon. On the other hand, elements which produce p-type silicon are known as acceptors as these impurities contribute to the electrical conductivity by accepting electrons from a filled energy band permitting what is known as conductivity by "holes" in which the sign of the carriers appears to be positive. A general treatment of the mechanism of conduction in semiconductors from the viewpoint of modern band theory has been given recently by Pearson,2 by Becker, Green and Pearson,3 and by Torrey and Whitmer.4 In this investigation boron and aluminum have been found to be acceptors, and phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony to be donors in silicon. Data on the effect of boron and phosphorus on the electrical properties, when present singly and in combination, have been acquired. These data are discussed in the present paper. Raw Materials Used and Methods for Adding Seeond Constituents Silicon from two sources was used in this work and these will be referred to as A and B respectively. Silicon A is a material of high purity supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. It is prepared by chemical purification of "commercial" silicon obtained from the arc furnace reduction of SiO2. It contains 99.8 pct silicon, minimum, with small amounts of calcium, iron, aluminum, boron, and phosphorus as the principal impurities. This material was extensively employed in these studies as well as in the commercial preparation of rectifier materials. Silicon B is a material of high purity from the du-Pont Co. It is prepared by a pyrolytic reduction of Sicl4 and is free of analytically detectable amounts of boron and phosphorus. Its use permitted study of the effect of boron and phosphorus individually on the properties. This material contains, however, spec-troscopic traees of a number of metals, some of which affect electrical and rectification properties. Typical analyses for the two grades of silicon are given in Table 1. To make controlled additions of boron to the charge it was necessary to employ a low boron content master alloy since the quantity of boron to be added was usually only a few thousandths of one percent. Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I'd like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. AT the meeting on Engineering Education on Mon- A day afternoon E. A. Holbrook, of the University of Pittsburgh and chairman of the Committee, presided as chairman with W. B. Plank acting as vice- chairman. About sixty members of the educational fraternity were present. Dean Holbrook, after a few introductory remarks, introduced the first speaker of the afternoon, Charles Y. Clayton, who then presented his paper, "Why Do So Few Elect Metallurgy?" in which he stressed the fact that ,one of the things the study of metallurgy ,now needs is publicity and public education on what metallurgy is and 'does. Another thing he brought out is that the study of metallurgy has been looked on for many years merely as a branch of other departments. He gave tables showing past and present enrollment in the course of metallurgy in various schools.

A technical evaluation of actual performance of the preparation facilities at Beaver Consolidated Coal Co.'s Stinson plant is presented, with special emphasis on sulfur reduction in 1-1/2 x 3/8 in., 3/8 in. x 28 mesh, and 28 mesh x 0 size fractions. Evaluation of the heavy medium section of the plant and the treatment of the 28 mesh x 0 coal is included. Design criteria considered for sizing and selection of equipment required to process 1-3/4 million tpy of raw coal on coals of divergent washability characteristics are summarized.

A new method is proposed to obtain automatically an unbiased estimate of the interdendritic spacing A. It is shown that the structure can be built by a random distribution of a rectangular basic unit. The usual definition of the interdendritic spacing yields a value 1 which, coupled with A, gives the shape of the basic rectangular unit. A study of the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and solidification rate was conducted as a part of a research program on dendritic solidification. For any comparison between theory and experiments to be meaningful, it is necessary to measure reproducible and clearly defined spacings. Fig. 1 shows clearly that even in a fairly simple structure such measurements are difficult. if we compare photos (a) and (b), we can hardly assess which one shows the larger spacing. Moreover, the quantity to be measured can be defined in several ways. On a small scale, dendrites seem to be distributed in a very regular and ordered way. However, on a larger scale, this regularity no longer exists. The usual way to measure spacings is to pick up some rows of dendrite stalks; such measurements are obviously biased since less orderly regions are not taken into account. A more objective method is to section the picture with randomly oriented straight lines and average the measured interdendritic spacings. The purpose of this paper is to show that such measurements, which can be conducted automatically, yield objective and reproducible results which are directly related to characteristic features of the dendritic structure. I) THEORETICAL ANALYSIS 1-1) Mathematical Morphology and Function of Co-variance. Matheronl and Serra2 enlarced- the definition and geometrical meaning of the notion of covariance to encompass problems in mathematical morphology. A brief review of part of their theory can be stated as follows. When calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilating circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption sufficiently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the various intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pressure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from outbye to inbye the circuit. Consider a simple mine circuit consisting of one intake and one return air course, each of equal and uniform section area and interconnected at regular intervals with crosscuts equipped with stoppings. At any point X inbye the circuit the air volume q on the intake air course equals that on the return air course and decreases with diminishing rate from outbye to inbye the circuit between the limits of Q1 completely outbye and Q completely inbye. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. THERE has been a recent revival of interest in the intermetallic compound AgMg as an experimental material for study of the physical and chemical properties of simple ordered structures. Studies of mechanical behaviors,1-4 diffusion,5,6 and thermo-dynamic properties7'8 have been reported. In several of these studies, heat treatments have been carried out in argon-filled silica capsules at temperatures as high as 750°C with no apparent adverse effects. The present authors were, therefore, startled to discover in the course of some yet unpublished work, that gross melting of near-stoichio-metric AgMg compositions occurred in such samples more than 100 deg below their melting point of about 800°C. This note is to report a brief series of experiments carried out to establish the reason for this behavior. Gross errors in sample composition and failure of furnace temperature controls were quickly eliminated as causes of melting. The first tangible lead came from chemical analysis of an AgMg sample which had melted during treatment at 750°C. A silicon content of 3.3 wt pct was found. Since satisfactory analyses had been obtained on the original as-cast ingot, contamination by diffusion and/or reaction with the fused silica capsule seemed a distinct possibility. A perplexing fact, however, was the apparently capricious incidence of the effect. Not only was it previously unknown, even in the experience of the present authors; but, in the early part of the present study, melting sometimes occurred and sometimes not with specimens treated under constant conditions. Indeed, one sample successfully survived a 750°C heat treatment and yet melted completely during the course of a subsequent anneal in an identical capsule at a lower temperature. To obtain evidence that silicon contamination could lower the melting point to the extent observed, the following experiment was performed. A series of ternary alloys was made up with a stoichiometric AgMg base and containing 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 1, 2, and 4 wt pct Si. Melting was done in MgO crucibles under a cover of argon gas. After holding 10 to 20 min in the temperature range 850° to 900°C, the alloys were allowed to solidify in the crucible and the temperature during cooling automatically recorded with a Pt/Pt-10 Rh thermocouple. Results from the cooling curves are shown in Fig. 1. Checks within 2 to 5C° were obtained upon repeated melting, cooling, and freezing. The whole series of cooling curves as well as metallographic examination of the melted alloys established that the AgMg rich portion of the AgMg-Si quasibinary is an eutectic-type system. The melting point of AgMg is lowered from approximately 820°C in the pure stoichiometric binary9 to about 710°C in the saturated intermetallic phase. Since second phase was observed in all samples on cooling to room temperature, the solid solubility of AgMg for silicon evidently falls rapidly with decreasing temperature as indicated schematically by the dashed solvus in Fig. 1. SAMUEL L. HOYT,* Minneapolis, Minn. -I was privileged to see the apparatus used by Mr. Scott, which is quite unique. It is, as the author says, a modification of the apparatus designed by Dr. Rosenhain, but it is evidently quite an; improvement. The author is to be congratulated on the fact that lie has given us, with his apparatus, a quantitative thermal analysis of these critical points. I notice the author refers to Ac3, Ac2, and Ac1. His designation of the Ac2 point is all right, but naturally in a steel with as much carbon as this, which would mean a hypereutectic steel, the other point might better be considered as an Ac, point with possibly another point above the Ac, point. Another important point brought out is the fact that, in Fig. 3, the lines representing the Ar1, transformation and the Ac,1_3 transformation do not intersect at the zero rate curve,

WHEN the United Nations win the war and the decision has been made to control future armament in the Axis countries, plans for the extent and operation of such control must have been prepared, to be ready to put into immediate execution. Such control to be effective must be premised upon complete military occupation of the two countries for a substantial period, with an arrangement at the end of such occupation for continued supervision of these industries into an indefinite future.

Measurements of the electrical conductivity, the thermal electromotive force, and the deviation from stoichiometry by thermogravimetry were made on ferrous oxide (wüstite) single crystals as well as on poly-crystalline samples in the temperature range of -900" to 1330°C. In the region defined by T 2 1000°C and 1.05 5 O/Fe 5 1.10 the electrical conductivity was shown to be proportional to the sixth root of- the oxygen partial pressure and to be linearly dependent on the deviation from stoichiometry. The absolute Seebeck coefficient of single and polycrystalline wüstite was shown to be independent of temperature in the above region and a p to n transition of the Seebeck coefficient was observed at O/Fe = 1.09 in polycrystalline wüstite. Analysis of the results showed that the predominant defects in wüstite in the above region were doubly ionized cation vacancies. The analysis also ruled out the existence of complexes of the type postulated by Roth, except that below 1000°C there is some evidence of 'association of defects. Of the three oxides of iron (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) only FeO (wüstite) can exist within a wide range of the ratio O/Fe. This has been shown by several investigations of the phase diagram using for instance chemical analysis of quenched samples'-4 or thermogravimetric measurements. 5,8 Darken and Gurry's1 data for example in the temper- ature range 1100o to 1400°C show that the lowest O/Fe ratio obtainable for FeOl +. is about 1.045 and that the existence range extends to O/Fe = 1.20 at 1400oC. On the basis of detailed analysis of thermogravimetric measurements made by Vallet and Raccah6 the existence of three varieties of wüstite at elevated temperatures was suggested by these authors and by Kleman. It is well-established that wüstite has a NaCl structure with vacant cation sites.3, 8 From a neutron-diffraction study of wüstite samples quenched to room temperature Roth9 concluded that defects in wüstite are mostly complexes composed of two cation vacancies and one interstitial cation in a tetrahedral site. The atomic arrangement in the vicinity of such a defect is similar to that in magnetite, where each occupied tetrahedral site is surrounded by four vacant octahedral positions disposed at the corners of a tetrahedron, so arranged that each vacancy is shared by two tetrahedral cations. Thus there is an average of two vacancies per interstitial. Recent X-ray diffraction measurements made by Smuts10 on quenched wüstite samples confirmed the results of Roth's neutron-diffraction experiments. Roth's model of defects in FeO can be regarded as a solid solution of Fe3O4 in FeO; salmon1' used this defect model to calculate the activity of Fe3O1 in FeO at high temperature and claimed good agreement with the results obtained experimentally by Darken and Gurry.' Each missing cation in wüstite is accompanied by two trivalent cations, thus preserving charge neutrality. The "holes" which differentiate between the Fe 2+ and Fe3' states of the ions in octahedral positions can overcome the attractive field of the cation vacancies, and are then free to move through the crystal as charge carriers. In the region defined by T 2 1000°C and 1.05 5 O/Fe 5 1.10 the electrical conductivity was shown to be proportional to the sixth root of- the oxygen partial pressure and to be linearly dependent on the deviation from stoichiometry. The absolute Seebeck coefficient of single and polycrystalline wüstite was shown to be independent of temperature in the above region and a p to n transition of the Seebeck coefficient was observed at O/Fe = 1.09 in polycrystalline wüstite. Analysis of the results showed that the predominant defects in wüstite in the above region were doubly ionized cation vacancies. The analysis also ruled out the existence of complexes of the type postulated by Roth, except that below 1000°C there is some evidence of 'association of defects. Of the three oxides of iron (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) only FeO (wüstite) can exist within a wide range of the ratio O/Fe. This has been shown by several investigations of the phase diagram using for instance chemical analysis of quenched samples'-4 or thermogravimetric measurements. 5,8 Darken and Gurry's1 data for example in the temper- ature range 1100o to 1400°C show that the lowest O/Fe ratio obtainable for FeOl +. is about 1.045 and that the existence range extends to O/Fe = 1.20 at 1400oC. On the basis of detailed analysis of thermogravimetric measurements made by Vallet and Raccah6 the existence of three varieties of wüstite at elevated temperatures was suggested by these authors and by Kleman. It is well-established that wüstite has a NaCl structure with vacant cation sites.3, 8 From a neutron-diffraction study of wüstite samples quenched to room temperature Roth9 concluded that defects in wüstite are mostly complexes composed of two cation vacancies and one interstitial cation in a tetrahedral site. The atomic arrangement in the vicinity of such a defect is similar to that in magnetite, where each occupied tetrahedral site is surrounded by four vacant octahedral positions disposed at the corners of a tetrahedron, so arranged that each vacancy is shared by two tetrahedral cations. Thus there is an average of two vacancies per interstitial. Recent X-ray diffraction measurements made by Smuts10 on quenched wüstite samples confirmed the results of Roth's neutron-diffraction experiments. Roth's model of defects in FeO can be regarded as a solid solution of Fe3O4 in FeO; salmon1' used this defect model to calculate the activity of Fe3O1 in FeO at high temperature and claimed good agreement with the results obtained experimentally by Darken and Gurry.' Each missing cation in wüstite is accompanied by two trivalent cations, thus preserving charge neutrality. The "holes" which differentiate between the Fe 2+ and Fe3' states of the ions in octahedral positions can overcome the attractive field of the cation vacancies, and are then free to move through the crystal as charge carriers. In the systems Mo-Fe-C, Mo-Co-C, and Mo-Ni-C the phase boumdaries of the cubic Ij carbides were determined at 1000°C and the variation of the lattice parameter with composition was measured. In the system Mo-Fe-C a single ternary carbide, Mo3Fe3C, was observed. In Mo-Co-C and Mo-Ni-C two new n phases of the type M12C were found: Mo6C06C and Mo6Ni6C. At 1000°C they coexist with the M6C phases MO3-4,CO3-2C and Mo3-4Ni3-2C, respectively. Mo3C03C and Mo4C02C are not separate phases but parts of a single M6C phase region, and the same is true of Mo3Ni3C and Mo4Ni2C. THE n carbide structure type has been known since it was determined by westgren' in 1933, yet reliable information on phase compositions of this type is ap-parently scarce. The following selection of suggested formulas illustrates the extent of the confusion con-cerning compositions: W2-3Fe4-3C,1W6Fe6C,2 W2_4Fe4-2C,3 (W,Fe)6C,4 Tj.-W4Co2C and nz-W6Co6C,5 n1-W3Co3C and n2-w4Co2C,5 W3C03C and w6Co3C2,7 MO3Fe3C,8n2-M04Fe2C,9 (MO,Fe)6C,4 MO3CO3C,8 n2-MO4CO2C.9 Many of these compositions obviously overlap, some disagree in carbon content. The use of the designations 77, and n2 is not consistent. There is uncertainty whether two carbides M6C coexist or whether there is only one M6C with a wide range of substitution of one metal for the other. The existence of M12C seems questionable altogether if one ignores the results of a neutron diffraction study of W6Fe6C supporting that particular metal to carbon ratio.'' More reliable information is available for the iso-typic oxides studied by Nevitt,11 Nevitt, Downey, and orris," and Meussner and carpenter.l3 That n car-bides and oxides are structurally identical, particularly with respect to the location of the metalloid atom, has been demonstrated clearly by Stadelmaier and Meussner14 and also by Parthe, Jeitschko, and sadagopan.15 Therefore the present paper, which attempts to establish the phase boundaries of n defini-tively for three carbon systems, has implications for the whole family of filled Ti2Ni types. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples were prepared in two stages. Pellets weighing 3 g were compacted from powders of the elements and presintered in a closed tube of fused silica that had been evacuated to lO-4 mm Hg. This was fol- lowed by arc melting the sintered samples under argon. Remelting the button once was sufficient to produce homogeneous specimens. The metal powders had the following minimum purities in wt pct: molybdenum 99.5, iron 99.0, cobalt 99.7, nickel 99.9, graphite 99.94. Carbon determinations by the gas volumetric method were obtained from thirty-one of the one hundred samples in the annealed condition. They were limited to compositions that were critical to placing a boundary line in the isothermal sections. The carbon losses were comparatively low and averaged less than 1.5 at. pct. For annealing, the samples were sealed in tubes of fused silica evacuated to 10-4 mm Hg. The annealing schedule was 20 hr at 1250°C followed by 150 hr at 1000" ±10°C. For the water quench the silica glass tubes were broken mechanically to speed the quench. The specimens were examined in the as-cast and annealed condition by standard metallographic techniques. Some of the as-cast and all annealed samples were studied by X-ray diffraction using a 114.6-mm powder camera with filtered Co radiation. The lattice parameters of the n phases were determined by graphic extrapolation to 8 = 90 deg on a plot against sin2 8. It is estimated that the maximum error in the lattice parameters is ±0.002A.. The phase fields were determined by the disappearing phase method, relying on X-rays for phase identification and on microscopy to detect small amounts of a phase. RESULTS Pertinent information on the binary side diagrams has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko16 and Elliott17 and will not be discussed further. Photomicrographs documenting the equilibria at 1000°C have been selected to avoid redundancy due to the similarity of the three systems. Thus there will be only one picture showing an equilibrium with Mo2C, and so forth. Molybdenum-Iron-Carbon. An isothermal section of most of the Mo-Fe-C system at 1000°C is shown in Fig. 1. No attempt has been made to distinguish between a and y iron or to determine their phase boundaries. A conspicuous absence is the phase Fe2 1Mo2C6 with the Cr23C6 structure, supporting the suggestion by Krainer4 that it decomposes by annealing at high temperatures. The only ternary phase is found in a narrow range around Mo3Fe3C (MO43Fe43C14). A microstructure with a two-phase mixture of Mo + n is seen in Fig. 2. The variation of the lattice parameter of n with the estimated composition is shown in in Table IA. The phase diagram does not agree with the results of Kuo9 who reported n2-Mo4Fe2C. Our lattice parameter Varies from 11.095A at the iron-rich end to 11.140Å at the molybdenum-richoend of the phase field whereas Kuo9reported 11.26Å for Mo4Fe2C. The Miller Number System is a well established method of measuring the relative abrasivity-friability of slurries, resulting in data that can be used in the selection of pump type and in forecasting wear-life of pumps and pipelines in slurry service. 1,2 Then after the pump type is selected, a Flow Analysis is determined by computer using pump design and operating parameters. This is used to determine pulsation control, suction requirements and stabilization, etc.

As a service to its readers, MINING ENGINEERING is publishing the mineral industry portion of the 1952 list of "Accredited Undergraduate Engineering Curricula in the United States." This list, revised annually, is issued by the Education Committee of the Engineers Council for Professional Development, and covers all phases of engineering education. The AIME is actively represented on ECPD, which was jointly organized by the Founder Societies and various other groups interested in the professional recognition of engineers.

Time Now For Thinking In these turbulous times a natural restiveness is created among the younger men of the mining profession. Many of them are veterans of World War II and the question is raised in their minds as to whether or not to go back into military service. There is time to think about this question now and it is advisable to do so in order that snap decisions may be avoided if war is declared.
