The application of evolutionary operation is proposed for the cleaning of coal by the heavy media process. Analysis of the data given suggests some benefits that may not be immediately appreciated unless evolutionary operation is applied. For example, while it may seem obvious to increase specific gravity when the ash and sulfur content of the clean coal is lower than that allowed, evolutionary operation may show that an increase in feed rate or an increase in both feed rate and specific gravity would be a more profitable alternative. In addition, by using evolutionary operation, up-to-date knowledge of the effect of change of feed rate or specific gravity on yield and product quality is available. This information facilitates confidence about decisions made in regard to the day-to-day operation of these units. A number of other applications in the minerals industry are proposed. An application of evolutionary operation in a related field is also given where a large number of variables were required to be optimized.

IN the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more components that tend to form very stable oxides Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken If, however, it s required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible Since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measurements and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties NATURE AND REMOVAL OF SURFACE BARRIERS The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 per cent Fe, 50 per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200ºC or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics However, this early work showed clearly that something in the powder compress was inhibiting diffusion and the process was almost entirely unworkable In the initial phase of the investigation samples of iron powder, nickel powder, and iron-aluminum alloy powder were pressed into separate bars and sintered in hydrogen Both the iron and nickel powders sintered

INCREASED mining activity during the past year has brought to light changes in mining practice and advances in technique, born and incubated in the period of depression from which the mining industry is now emerging. Although the tendency toward large output from individual mines has continued, a salutary trend is evident toward greater efficiency at small mines, in which the gold mines of Canada have led the way. Improvement in excavating machinery and washing plants for small placers has continued, and knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of this kind of equipment has increased. Greater portability through sectionalization has been the keynote. Power, shovels and draglines mounted on caterpillar treads move from one deposit to another under their own power, and floating washing plants mounted on pontoons can be taken down, moved, and set up again by a small crew of men in only a few days.

This symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. The Nature of Geological Inquiry "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals—that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, gla- ciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves—that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them —indeed, their very existence—are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound kntowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties call be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. From the theories of flow and fracture it is shown that the difference in reciprocals of the transition temperatures (OK) is a quantitative measure of temper ernbrittlement. Experimental data are given which support this conclusion. STUDIES of temper embrittlement have been made with various viewpoints; some involved a study of the kinetics of the reaction,',2'" others were concerned with changes in the mechanical properties," . and still others investigated the structural differences between the embrittled and unembrittled states by means of the microscope," -ray ,' measurements of electrode potential," and electrical resistivity." In all these studies, the difference in impact properties was the criterion for distinguishing between the embrittled and unembrittled states. By common agreement the difference in transition temperatures is now taken as a measure of the degree of embrittlement, and this measure is used as the quantitative measure upon which studies of the phenomenon are based. Vidal and Jolivet"' suggested that the degree of embrittlement was the same whether measured by impact or by a slow bend test. Their conclusion was based on tests at constant temperature. Jaffe and Buffum" using the impact and slow bend test showed that, for a given degree of embrittlement, the difference in transition temperatures varied with the method of testing. Hultgren and Chang" showed that the difference in transition temperature produced by the V-notched Charpy impact test was not the same as the value produced by the keyhole-notched impact test. This is a very fundamental point because there can be no true measure of temper embrittlement unless it is invariant with respect to the test method. Theory The purpose of this analysis is to show how the transition temperature depends on the stress distribution and the state of the material. The criterion for fracture may be stated as follws: where iF is some function of the principle stresses and F is a critical condition depending on the state of the metal. Similarly yielding occurs when Where is another function of the prin-ciple stresses and Y is a critical value depending on the state of the material. There is some controversy as to the exact form of the function f,.(u,, u,, us) but most experimental data give the following criterion:= where 8, and 6, = 21 or 0. Combinations of 6, and 8, give the various criteria such as the normal stress, the hydrostatic tension, and the maximum shear stress laws. The creep rupture properties of wrought aluminum powder products made from five grades of sintered aluminum powder were investigated at temperatures from 400° to 900°F for rupture times up to 1000 hr. The effect of stress concentrations on materials of this type was investigated by means of notched creep rupture tests. A tentative correlation was obtained between the creep rupture properties and the structure as revealed by electron micrographs. SEVERAL papers have been published recently concerning the production and properties of wrought aluminum powder products and their possible high temperature applications. Most of the published work in this field has come from abroad, notably Switzerland, and articles by Irmann and his colleagues were summarized in English recently.'.' Most of the papers published by Dr. Irmann are principally concerned with the retention of properties (by a product which is produced from extremely fine flake powder and is subsequently hot extruded) after heating to high temperature for prolonged times. The powder may be in atomized or flake form, and during hot working the applied pressure is reported to plastically deform the aluminum powder, thus breaking the oxide skin and welding the particles together. Irmann attributes the remarkable properties to the dispersion of oxide inclusions. Specifically, the product described by Irmann is one labeled SAP (Sintered Aluminum Powder) in which the initial flake powder is so fine that at least 50 pct of the flakes have one dimension of 2 microns or less. The composition of the starting aluminum shows in percent, Fe, 0.18; Si, 0.19; Zn, 0.06; Ti, 0.03; Cu, Mn, Mg, all nil; balance Al, approximately 99.5 pct. Aluminum is not the only material that has been found to have increased resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures when produced by powder metallurgy. It has been reported by Middleton, Pf eil, and Rhodes- hat platinum has a higher recrys-tallization temperature when produced by powder metallurgy and exhibits peculiar properties, many of which are similar to those of the aluminum powder products. Difficulties were encountered in explaining the reason for the strengthening in the case of platinum since the existence of the oxide is doubtful. The authors attributed the special properties to "a small amount of suitably dispersed porosity." This theory was supported by von -~eer-leder4 in the discussion to the paper, and the similarity between this method of hardening and that suggested by Rohner in his theory of age hardening was pointed out. R. de Fleury5 attempted to explain some of the properties in terms of the modulus of elasticity and elastic limit of alumina and aluminum while von Zeerleder examined the relationship between the yield strength and the reciprocal of the powder particle size. Boenisch and WiderholtQ dealt mainly with the corrosion resistance of the powder aluminum material and compared it with other aluminum alloys. The diffusion rates of other metals in SAP and pure aluminum have been compared by Seith and Lop-mann.' They showed that the alloying metals diffuse particularly quickly in SAP possibly due to the very fine grain size. The properties of the Alcoa products were given by Lyle.' The creep rupture properties of SAP and two of the Alcoa experimental powder products were compared by Gregory and Grant hnd it was shown that these products are vastly stronger at 900°F than are the best cast and wrought alloys at 600°F. Since the publication of these data, the authors have investigated two further aluminum powder products and it is the object of this paper to show how the high temperature creep rupture properties of the five materials vary with oxide content and with the structure as revealed by electron microscopy. Materials One of the five products, SAP, a sintered aluminum product, was supplied by the Societe Anonyme pourl Industrie de l,Aluminium, Neuhausen a/RHF, Switzerland, through Dr. R. Irmann, while the others, M276, M257, M293, and M255 were supplied by the Aluminum Company of America as experimental powder metallurgical products. M255- and M293 were made from coarse and fine atomized powders, respectively. Selected samples of hydrided Zr-Hf alloys were rapidly quenched to voom temperature and exrtrnined metallographically, by X-ray diffraction, and through micro hardness studies to confirm high-temperutuve data Confirming experiments sllowed that there were five phases in this Lernary system: 1) hextrgonal with lattice parameters similar to that of the initia1 Zr-Hf alloy but slightly enlarged due to dissolved hydrogen; 2) fee with properties of a brittle, intermediate, hydride compound; 3) fct with c/a crvoltnd 1.07 and which appeared as a neetilelike precipitale; 4) hexagonal, designated ?, with c/a ratio of 2.37; and 5) orthorhombic, designated X, with a = 4.67, b = 4.49, and c = 5.093 and whose tnicro-st?ruct~ival nppetrl-nnce depcncled o/i, heat lvecrt~r~ent. A previous paper' on the Zr-Hf-H system described the thermochemical data obtained with a high-vacuum, high-sensitivity mirrogravimetric apparatus. This data presented a fairly complete picture of the phase relationships at elevated temperatures. However, it could not establish the actual crystal structures, lattice parameters, or metallographic disposition of the hydride phases. The present complementary study utilizes X-ray powder patterns along with light and electron microscopy to characterize completely the five hydrided phases found in Zr-Hf-H alloys quenched to room temperature. Crystallographic features of the zr-Hf,2,4 zr-H,5-7 and Hf-H8 systems have been summarized in Table I. Designations of a, ß, and ? were retained in the Zr-Hf-H system for the phase regions through which the pressure-composition isotherms always sloped. However, it was not firmly agreed that these were single-phase regions.' In fact, the region designated y always contained a cubic as well as a tetragonal phase after quenching to -196°C. MATERIALS Preparation of the high-purity Zr-Hf alloys has been described.' The four zirconium alloys which were hydrided contained 37 wt pct Hf (23 at. pct), 51 wt pct Hf (37 at. pct), 73 wt pct Hf (58 at. pct), and 91 wt pct Hf (82 at. pct), respectively. These were designated B-2, B-4, B-6, and B-8. Photomicrographs of the initial alloys showed the material to be quite clean as would be expected from the precautions exercised in producing them. However, there were a number of annealing twins but no other subgrain structure. In addition to the four original alloys, fifteen hydrided samples were observed at room temperature. Hydrogen compositions are given at the top of Tables I1 to V. APPARATUS The phases present at elevated temperatures were studied by quenching hydrided samples to room temperature by two different methods, both under vacuum: 1) fast cooling of the sample tubes of the microgravimetric apparatus1'9 with flowing air and 2) rapid quenching into liquid nitrogen. The cooling rate for 1) was 750° to 250°C in 30 sec. Since the microbalance chamber was not designed to permit very rapid cooling of a hydride sample, all liquid-nitrogen quenching was done in an auxiliary experiment. The auxiliary quenching apparatus consisted of a small-bore, high-temperature furnace, a sealed SiO2 tube containing the sample, and a dewar quenching flask filled with liquid nitrogen. The hydrided sample, previously quenched in the microgravimetric reaction chamber, was placed in a platinum boat in a vacuum-degassed SiO2 tube. A zirconium wire getter and degassed SiO2 rod, to reduce the internal volume, were also in the tube. After sealing the tube under vacuum the zirconium getter was heated to absorb the last traces of gas. Only the sample was heated at the reaction temperature for the desired length of time, and then the tube dropped through the opposite end of the furnace into the dewar. A quenching rate of 200" to 400° C per sec was estimated. Analyses of samples after the auxiliary experiment also showed practically no increase in oxygen or nitrogen content from heating in the SiO2 tube. All of the samples were examined at room temperature by the X-ray powder method. The majority of the powder patterns were obtained with double nickel-filtered CuKa radiation after 8- and 16-hr exposures in an 11.48-cm-diam camera. Cobalt and chromium radiation were also used to spread out the high d value end of the Pattern. Such patterns readily identified the minor phases. NO oxide or nitride lines were found. PARTICULAR interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep in Johannesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly new 1-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104º at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated at subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. TURMOIL has been rampant in the lead producing industry during 1946. The chronic labor shortage was aggravated by various work stoppages in mines, smelters, and refineries, while shortage of materials was widespread. Price uncertainties helped to confuse the situation in many countries and particularly in the United States until the removal of price control in the latter part of the year. At the end of the first year of peace, lead, which had been comparatively plentiful during the war years, was a scarce and high-priced metal throughout the world. It is the hope of the industry that the law of supply and demand, if allowed to operate without interference, will bring about a satisfactory balance between production and consumption. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that there have been few important developments in the metallurgy of lead, though a number of items of general interest to the industry have been reported. An ore body which may prove to be of considerable importance has been discovered at Mpanda, Tanganyika. The scarcity of lead ore is illustrated by the announced reopening of the La Manche lead mine in Newfoundland, idle for 56 years. A new lead producer came into production when Rhodesia Broken Hill started up its new smelter. Lead concentrate of 75 per cent grade is smelted in Scotch hearths and the lead is refined to market grade by the Harris process without desilverizing. Production is about 1000 tons per month. One Australian lead producer, Mount Isa, has returned to lead production after having operated its lead plant for the production of copper during the war. The East Chicago plant of the International Smelting and Refining Co. has been sold to the Eagle-Picher Co.

Paraffin deposition has been studied in the laboratory under conditions simulating deposition in well tubing. A theoretical analysis has been made of the cooling of the oil and the precipitation of paraffin from the oil as it flows up the well tubing and through surface flowlines. It is proposed that paraffin deposits are initiated by the precipitation of paraffin directly on or adjacent to the pipe wall and grow by diffusion of paraffin from solution to the deposit. This mechanism is consistent with laboratory and field observations, and has proved useful in the design and interpretation of laboratory paraffin-deposition tests. Tests have been made of the effect of plastic pipe coatings and chemical additives on paraffin deposition. INTRODUCTION Paraffin deposits which form in well tubing and surface flowlines interfere with production and must be removed. Over the years much progress has been made in developing and improving methods of removing these deposits after they form. Much less progress has been made in developing methods of preventing or inhibiting the formation of paraffin deposits. This is due, it is believed, to the lack of knowledge of the mechanism of paraffin deposition, the absence of satisfactory laboratory testing methods and the difficulties in evaluating the results of field tests of preventive treatments. The present investigation was undertaken to elucidate the mechanism of paraffin deposition and to develop suitable laboratory tests for studying the inhibition of paraffin deposition in well tubing and surface flowlines. Current theories on the mechanism of paraffin deposition have been evolved from field observations, from laboratory studies of various factors which might be involved in paraffin deposition, and from laboratory paraffin-deposition tests.1-9 Paraffin deposits have been formed in the laboratory by immersing a cold finger into a hot wax-oil solution and by flowing hot wax-oil solutions through cooled pipe or over cooled plates. These laboratory conditions differ in important features from field conditions, and the observed deposition behavior is not entirely field-like." Thus, there is reason to question the field applicability of the results of these tests. The present investigation was undertaken to determine how to perform and interpret laboratory paraffin-deposition tests to obtain information on the inhibition of deposition in the field. The paraffin problem in the broadest sense encompasses the formation of any predominantly organic deposit in well tubing, surface flowlines and other equipment in contact with crude oil or gas. The present investigation was limited to paraffin deposition involving the precipitation of paraffin wax from solution by cooling and its concentration in a deposit on a cooled surface. This probably excludes its applicability to those problems arising from asphaltic-base crudes, but not those arising from paraffin-or mixed-base crudes. This also excludes its applicability to emulsion and congealing oil problems which are often included as part of the paraffin problem. The phenomenon of cooling appears to be the controlling factor in paraffin deposition involving the precipitation of paraffin wax and its concentration in the deposit. Deposits of this type are usually found in the field only where cooling occurs. Early in this laboratory investigation, it was not found possible to form deposits under constant temperature conditions from a wax-oil slurry, either by steady flow through pipe or by gas-lift up a pipe. Thus, the investigation was limited to situations involving cooling. THEORY The relationships involved in establishing the temperature profiles in an oil stream as it flows up well tubing with a linear (geothermal) pipe-wall temperature distribution or through surface flowlines with essentially constant pipe-wall temperature are presented in the Appendix. The relationship between radial distance in the pipe and the rate of cooling of the oil is then combined with a relationship between cloud point and rate of cooling to develop the pattern of formation of a wax cloud in the oil. The following discussion of paraffin deposition under various laboratory and field conditions is based upon this development which is presented in the Appendix. PARAFFIN DEPOSITION IN SURFACE FLOWLINES The average temperature of the oil coming out of a well is somewhat higher than the ground temperature. Thus, the oil continues to cool on its trip through the surface flowline, and wax deposition can occur. The temperature distributions calculated from Eq. A-4 are given in Fig. 1. As can be seen, almost all the cooling occurs in the first 500 ft from the wellhead. In addition, the radial temperature gradient near the wall decreases rapidly with distance and becomes very small after a few hundred feet. Thus, growth of a paraffin deposit would be expected to decrease rapidly with distance from the wellhead and become negligible after a few hundred feet, since growth is dependent on concentration gradient. The creep properties of metals have assumed increasing importance in recent years and many investigations have been made on various phases of the problem. In the past year the annual lectures of the Institute of Metals Division1 and the Iron and Steel Division2 were concerned with this subject, and are excellent reviews. For many years the creep properties of lead and lead alloys have been investigated at the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co., and it is hoped that the present paper will contribute knowledge of some of the factors that influence creep. Lead, being a metal that recrys-tallizes readily at room temperature, is an excellent material upon which to investigate creep phenomena because of the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and it might be expected that results would apply to some extent to elevated-temperature tests of other metals. Material The creep tests of this investigation were all made on high-purity lead (99.9998+ Pb) in which the only impurity that could be detected by spectrographic and chemical means was approximately 0.0001 per cent Fe. Flat strips, 0.750 in. wide by 0. 100 in. thick, were prepared by extruding 2-in. dia. cast billets at a temperature of 250°C. This gave a material of 2 to 3 mm. average grain size with a tensile strength of j.400 lb. per sq. in. when tested at a straining rate of 5 per cent per minute. With this extremely soft material, great care was necessary in handling the specimens, to avoid distortion and subsequent recrystallization. The creep tests at 30°C. were conducted in a constant-temperature room, specially built for the purpose in the basement of an office building in which there was no moving machinery, and no vibration was detectable under the most severe conditions of shock in the adjacent surroundings. The room was well insulated and heated electrically, control being by means of a de Khotinsky regulator operating a relay. Maximum temperature variation over a period of several years has been ± 1/2°C. Specimens of the extruded strip, 16 in. long, were used for test purposes with no reduced gauge section, thus eliminating any distortion due to machining. The method of clamping and supporting the specimens is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The creep properties of metals have assumed increasing importance in recent years and many investigations have been made on various phases of the problem. In the past year the annual lectures of the Institute of Metals Division1 and the Iron and Steel Division2 were concerned with this subject, and are excellent reviews. For many years the creep properties of lead and lead alloys have been investigated at the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co., and it is hoped that the present paper will contribute knowledge of some of the factors that influence creep. Lead, being a metal that recrys-tallizes readily at room temperature, is an excellent material upon which to investigate creep phenomena because of the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and it might be expected that results would apply to some extent to elevated-temperature tests of other metals. The extra degree of freedonz introduced by a second independetzt concentration in a tenzary system gives rise to the possibility of unstable planar phase interfaces in semi-infinite diffision layer couples. Diffusion paths which pass continuously in and out of too-phase regions of the phase diagram but which are not coincident with tie-lines give rise to super saturated zones which may be either adjacent to or isolated from planar phase interfaces, with corresponding nonisolated or isolated precipitates. Nonisolated precipitates are equivalent to morphological development of the interface. Selected couples in the ternary systems Fe-Ni-Cr and Cu-Zn-Sn have been examined nzetallographically and ifz the latter case both isolated and uo~zisolated precipitates have been observed. The diffusion path in one of the couples showing interface morphological developtnent has been examitled using electron probe microanalysis. IGNORING the spurious effects of preferential grain boundary diffusion and anisotropic crystal growth7 it can be unequivocally stated that it is impossible for a binary isothermal diffusion couple constructed of two unsaturated phases to sustain a nonplanar phase interface. Consider for demonstrative purposes the schematic phase diagram of Fig. l(a). Given an initial flat phase interface, semi-infinite boundary conditions and the internal boundary condition fixed by the constitution diagram, xB = xB(T), the unique solution of the diffusion equation requires a persistent flat interface. No other solution is possible. If, however, we anticipate the involvement of surface tension, then the internal boundary condition must be written xB = xB (T,Y) where r is the radius of curvature of a hypothetical nonplanar interface. The introduction of a new parameter such as r can be equivalent to the release of an internal constraint, so that a stable nonplanar interface may be possible after all. Consider a perturbation to the interface as indicated in Fig. 1(b). According to the Ostwald-Freundlich equation: which is applicable to a system of this constitution, the solubility of A in the matrix ß ,xB (Y), at a point of curvature r is given by where Va is the molar volume of the a-phase, R is the gas constant, and a is the interfacial tension. Since the right hand side is positive, xB(r) >xB cm, as indicated in Figs. 1(a) and 1(c). Accordingly, the perturbation will carry the interface concentration in a direction which is opposite to that which would sustain local equilibrium. Such a perturbation is necessarily moderated and the system is returned to its initial condition. HENRY MARION HOWE, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: "Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up-by masses of graphite . . . " Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in 1900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on 'The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro- structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor struc- tural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. RAPID progress has been made during the past year in the copper mills throughout the country. Particular efforts have been made to increase the fine-grinding efficiency by the installation of larger classifying units operating in closed circuit with ball mills, such as the 78-in. high-weir Akins installation at the Phelps Dodge plant at Ajo, Ariz.; also the Type "FX" Dorr classifiers of Nevada Consolidated at McGill. Nev. and the "FX" Dorr bowl classifier of the Braden Copper Co. in Chile. Some of the copper milling plants in the Southwest, such as Chino in New Mexico and Ray Con. in Arizona, have replaced rolls operating wet in their fine-grinding circuit by rod mills. At Hollinger primary rod mills were formerly used in open circuit followed by pebble mills in closed circuit with classifiers. They now have primary ball mills in closed circuit with large extra heavy classifiers and no secondary mills. This new installation is producing the same grinding on 5000 tons per day with a reduction in cost of nearly 4c. per ton. At the Braden plant, in Chile, short-head Symons crushers have replaced 54-in. rolls, thereby in- creasing crushing capacity with some saving in maintenance cost.

IT is with an unusual degree of personal satisfaction that I find myself in a position to pay tribute to the memory of Henry Marion Howe. One could not have spent any length of time in the presence of Dr. Howe without profiting intellectually. I do not hesitate to say that my years of association with him were the most stimulating of all my years of metallurgical study. He always impressed one with his own eager search for knowledge. Never dependent on the written word alone he sought information from anyone whose opinion he valued. His ability to piece together bits of apparently conflicting data from various sources so as to build up a logical hypothesis was unique. A small slight man with the intellect of genius he would have gone to the top in any endeavor he undertook and it was fortunate for metallurgy that its study attracted him as it did. Howe was a modest man. I like to recall an incident which left a lasting impression with me. The lab- oratory in his home, "Green Peace," was in the basement and access was by way of stairs leading down from his secretary's room. In using these stairs my attention was attracted many times to an ordinary cardboard shoe box which reposed on the shelf above the landing. It was crudely labeled on its side in black ink "Vanity Box." My curiosity was aroused to the point that I finally asked his secretary what it was. With some amusement she took the box from its shelf on the stairway, opened it and showed me its contents—numerous letters, from the foremost men of science of every civilized country throughout the world, commending his "Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron." I recall that in reply to one who thought there was not enough of Howe's own researches in his book he wrote, "Primarily I am a writer, secondarily an investigator." Howe wrote to make his readers think. No one ever strove harder than he to be right but above all, whether his viewpoint proved ultimately to be right or wrong, he was always content if by his stand, he provoked a reader to take the next step along the path to greater knowledge. I doubt that he was ever afraid to be wrong for he was always secure in the thought that his effort was guided by a sincere search for the truth. One continually searching for truth is entitled to occasional excursions up the wrong alley. A glance backward to the metallurgical confusion of some thirty to forty years ago, or need one go back so far, provides convincing proof of what a host of companions one may have in a common acceptance of ideas which the future will prove to be wholly untenable. Well over a hundred years have passed since investigators have interested themselves in the effect of increasing the temperature of iron and steel on their mechanical properties. We are told by Charles Walrandl in "Industrial Annals" for June 11, 1822, that bend tests, conducted in a Russian steel works of Prince Demidoff, on steel bars "highly heated" and bent during cooling became brittle when bent at an iris blue color. He concluded, "That when steel is heated to a temperature between 473°F and 662°F the mettle was more brittle between these limits than at a much lower or at a much higher temperature." It was a curious bit of information recognized as true to this day and still not explained satisfactorily. In 1878 Charles Houston in Annales de Mines associated this brittleness with an increase in tensile strength at 572°F. When this relatively low temperature is exceeded it is recognized that steel becomes weaker as temperature is increased up to the melting point, where no strength of practical importance remains. It is easy to believe, in fact it goes without saying, that this weakening as the temperature of a metal is increased is the result of the motion of the atoms making up the metal, a motion which itself is evidence of the temperature increase. However, if we are considering iron or steel we find that this decrease in strength is not a steady one, for, besides the increase in strength just referred to, one comes to a temperature, the critical temperature, where results of tests indicate the metal to be extremely weak and then as temperature increases to become sensibly stronger again. This apparent anomaly was made the subject of the first Howe Memorial Lecture, delivered by Albert Sauveur in 1924. It may be of interest to review these findings of Sauveur. It was found that Al-A13Ni could be readily cold rolled perpendicular to but not parallel to the whiskers. Reductions of more than 98 pct were achieved without cracking by rolling perpendicular to the whiskers, whereas extensive edge cracking was noted after only 15 pct reduction when rolling parallel to the whiskers. The longitudinal and transverse tensile strengths were nearly doubled, and the longitudinal yield strength more than tripled by cold rolling 50 pct in a direction perpendicular to the whiskers. The whiskers exhibited some waviness (elastic bending) as a result of cold rolling, but at very high reductions (greater than 75 pct) whisker fracture and misalignment became significant. A fine dislocation substructure in the matrix consisting of cells attached to the whiskers was pro -duced by cold rolling. Most of- the substructure was readily removed by a 1-hr anneal at 500°C. Cold rolling was found to substantially reduce the thermal stability of the microstructure at 610°C but did not affect the stability at 500°C. FIBER and whisker reinforced composite materials promise significant improvements in properties over conventional materials. Before they find wide use, however, it will be necessary to understand the response of these highly anisotropic materials to common metalworking processes. Most of the nonmetal-lic fiber reinforced materials have very low elongations (a few pct or less) in the direction of fiber alignment. Thus, metalworking techniques such as rolling and forging would not be as broadly applicable to these materials. This investigation was initiated to determine how a composite system consisting of Al3Ni whisker reinforced aluminum responded to rolling, what changes in the microstructure occurred, and the effect of deformation on the mechanical properties. The composite material studied was produced by unidirectional solidification of the A1-Al3Ni eutectic alloy'-7 and consisted of 10 pct by volume of aligned whiskers of Alai in a matrix of aluminum. It should be pointed out that this system is not representative of all composite materials, and the results will therefore not be universally applicable. The A1-Al3Ni system is characterized by: 1) A strong fiber-matrix interfacial bond 2) A ductile matrix 3) A sufficiently low fiber content to allow significant plastic flow between fibers 4) Strong, completely elastic whiskers (tensile strength 400,000 psi, elastic modulus = 20 X 106 psi.1 These factors allow the material to be readily rolled perpendicular to the fibers. If the fiber-matrix bond were not strong, such a weak interface could fail during rolling. A measure of the ability of a composite to be rolled in the transverse direction can be obtained from noting the transverse tensile behavior. In the case of Al-Al3Ni,2 there is considerable ductility (15 to 30 pct). In the case of boron filament reinforced aluminum, for example, the transverse elongation is less than 1 pct,8 and the material could probably not be cold rolled as readily in that direction. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 3-in. diam ingots of A1-A13Ni eutectic were unidi-rectionally solidified in graphite crucibles. The starting materials consisted of 99.99+ pct pure nickel and aluminum, and the pure eutectic ingots were made with 6.2 wt pct Ni. The unidirectional solidification process (described in detail elsewhere1-3) consists of preparing a master heat of eutectic composition, remelting, and withdrawing the ingot vertically downward through the heat source at a controlled rate so that plane front solidification proceeds upward at a constant velocity. The resulting microstructure consists of 10 pct by volume of whiskers of very high aspect (length to diameter) ratio. The fiber lengths have not been measured because of the difficulty of detecting fiber ends9 but exceeds 104. There is some possibility that the fibers may be continuous within one grain. Flat sheet specimens 2¾ in. sq and approximately 0.2 in. thick containing whiskers parallel to the plane of the sheet and to one edge were used for this study. A1-A13Ni exhibits either a rod-like (high solidification rates) or a blade-like (low solidification rates) whisker morphology,1,3 and both types were studied. Rolling was accomplished using a two-high rolling mill at a speed of approximately 10 fpm. The rolling direction was either parallel to or perpendicular to the direction of growth (direction of whisker alignment). Reductions of from 0.002 to 0.03 in. per pass were used with the most common value being 0.005 in. per pass. Cold rolling of Al-Al3Ni to more than 98 pct reduction in thickness was accomplished with no intermediate anneals. In addition. a series of speci-mens was cold rolled 97 pct with a 1-hr, 500°C anneal in air after each 50 pet reduction. Tensile testing was accomplished using a Tinius-lsen four screw testing machine. Flat sheet specimens + in. wide and between 2 and 2; in. long with the thickness dependent upon rolling reduction, were used. The gage section was in. wide and 1 in. long. THE purpose of this paper is to present certain data and observations resulting from a series of experiments dealing with the heat treatment and microstructure of commercial white cast iron and its derivative, malleable iron. In planning the experimental work, particular pains were taken to secure for the tests white cast iron of "normal" composition; i.e., within the composition limits commonly prescribed by manufacturers of malleable castings. A review of the literature leads us to believe that much data of a fragmentary character treating of the graphitization of white cast iron have been of little value, mainly because of the diversity in chemical composition of the materials employed in the tests. Moreover, when feasible, annealing periods at least comparable to those of current practice have been adopted. We wish to acknowledge our indebtedness to the members of the research department of the Eastern Malleable Iron Co. for the white cast iron used in the tests and, particularly, for their active cooperation during the experimental stage of the work. In this paper the following subjects will be discussed in the order indicated: Data on the thermal critical points of white cast iron and malleable iron. Changes produced in tensile properties and microstructure of white cast iron by annealing at different temperatures within the range, 760 to 1100° C. Relation of thickness of wall section of hard iron to microstructure and tensile properties of malleable iron obtained under normal annealing conditions. Notes on mechanics of graphitization of normal white cast iron as observed in specimens quenched after various periods of anneal at approximately 800° C.

Twenty-six fields were found in the Texas Gulf Coast in 1940 as compared to 17 fields in 1939. Of these, 14 were oil fields and 12 were gas and distillate. About 150 wells were drilling at the end of the year. Production for the year 1940 amounted to 104,127,247 bbl. as compared to 100,-253,937 bbl. for 1939. Considerable wildcatting for Wilcox production featured the exploration, but discoveries were few and the type of fields found mainly gas and distillate. On the whole, the program was discouraging. New Fields Alta Lomu. Galveston County.—The Alta Loma field was discovered on May 20, 1940, by the Stanolind Oil and Gas Company's No. I John A. Hulen, which blew out at a depth of 9166 it. and ran wild for several days, with an estimated production of 400 bbl. per hour of 36" gravity oil from a sand in the top of the Frio. Water soon appeared but the well produced more than I3o,ooo bbl. of oil between May 20 and June 10, together with a large amount of salt water. Later the well was killed and recompleted on Nov. 23, for 276 bbl. of 34" gravity oil per day. Probably this was the most sensational discovery of the year, although development to the end of the year was disappointing. The discovery was the result of reflection seismograph work of the Stano-End Oil and Gas Co., the principal leaseholders. Bailey's Prairie, Brazoria County.— Glenn H. McCarthy9s No. I W. B. Munson was completed in a lower Frio sand from perforations 11,345 to II,349 ft. for 8 bbl. of fluid (50 per cent black oil, 27" gravity, and 50 per cent B. S. and W.) on Sept. 24, 1940. It was finally recompleted as a gas well from perforations 11,631 to 11,651 ft., on Oct. 9, 1940. The well had been drilled to a total depth of 11,860 ft. This well produced for only a short time and the area is at present inactive. Blessing, Matagorda County.—The Texas Company's No. I A. B. Pierce was completed from a Frio sand from 8265 to 8300 ft. on July 8, 1940, for an initial production of 29 bbl. of distillate, I 1/2 million cu. ft. of gas. One other gas and distillate well was completed in 1940. Borden, Wharlon County.—J. F. Hutch-ins' No. 2 A. P. Borden Estate was completed on Feb. 11, 1940, for 108 bbl. of 35,6° gravity oil, from a Frio sand at 4758 to 4771 ft. This is the second well drilled in the area by Hutchins. Two other wells in 1940 were failures and there was no activity at the end of the year. Dyersdale, Harris County.-The Dyers-dale field was opened by the completion, on Sept. 15, 1940, of H. C. Cockburn's No. I G. Burkitt from a sand in the top of the Frio, through perforations from 4067-4072 ft., for 240 bbl. of low-gravity oil. By the end of the year the field had been fairly well outlined and did not appear to be a major discovery. Duck Bay, Calhoun County.—Coronado Oil Company's No. I Welder, alter having drilled to 10,002 ft., perforated casing from 5654 1/2 to 5659 it. and was completed for 60 bbl. of 36.8° gravity oil On July 27, 1940, from a Miocene sand.
