The rate of reaction of hydrogen sulfide with ferrous sulfide was studied by measuring the initial rates of sulfidation of iron strips in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon mixtures at 670°, 800°, and 900" C. The time-dependent surface sulfur activity is derived from the instantaneous rate of sulfidation with the assumption that diffusion in the sulfide layer is in a pseudo-steady state with the gas-sulfide chemical reaction. The rate of sulfur transfer from hydrogen sulfide to the surface of iron sulfide is proportional to the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide and inversely proportional to the activity of sulfur at the surface of the sulfide layer. The derived rate equation is based on the assumption that most of the surface sites on the chemisorbed layer of iron sulfide are occupied by sulfur atoms and that the slow rate-controlling reaction is the dissociation of hydrogen sulfide on the chemisorbed layer. The experimental results are in reasonable accord with this reaction model. 1 HE slow approach to parabolic growth rate in the sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixtures is a manifestation of slow approach to surface equilibrium between the gas and the surface of the sulfide layer. For example, at 800°C and Fig. 7 in Part I, the parabolic growth rate begins after approximately 1 day of sulfidation time. With decreasing temperature and decreasing partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide, the time necessary to reach gas-sulfide surface equilibrium is much longer. These observations are similar to those reported previously by Turkdogan et al.' on the oxidation of iron to wustite in hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. The slow approach to gas-sulfide equilibrium is well-demonstrated by the results in Fig. 1 where the square of the weight gain per unit area, ( g S per sq cmI2, is plotted against time for gas mixtures having PH g//>H = 1.0 with 0, 25, 50, and 67 pct Ar at 800°C. The value of 1.5 X lo-' (g S per sq cm)' corresponds to almost complete sulfidation of the iron strip (- 0.05 cm thick) to iron sulfide. The points fall on S-shaped curves. If the inflection parts of the curves are considered to be linear, thus indicating parabolic growth rate and the establishment of gas-sulfide equilibrium, their slopes would have to be the same for a fixed ratio in the gas mixture. Such is not the case, and the slopes for the "linear" parts of the S-shaped curves are lower than the value when gas-sulfide surface equilibrium is established. The subject matter of this paper is the kinetics of the surface reaction of hydrogen sulfide with iron sulfide during the early stages of sulfidation of an iron strip. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The apparatus and materials used were the same as those discussed in Part I. In the present experiments of relatively short duration, a purified iron strip, 5 by 2 by 0.05 cm, which was suspended in the uniform hot zone of a vertical zircon tube, reacted with a flowing gas mixture of hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon. The sample was suspended from a gold chain attached to a calibrated silica spring. The amount of sulfur picked up by the iron, which formed a layer of iron sulfide, was determined by measuring the displacement of a reference point on the silica spring, using a cathetom-eter. In all cases, the degreased sample was first annealed in a stream of oxygen-free dry hydrogen for several hours to remove any impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon which might have been present on the surface of the sample.' The rate measurements were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900° C in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen-argon mixtures with pH2 s/Ph2 ratios from 4 to 0.1. In a few experiments of short duration no sulfur deposition was observed in gas mixtures with (comments concerning sulfur deposition at high pH s/ph ratios were made in Part I.) Typical examples of the results obtained are shown in Fig. 2 for two temperatures and two gas compositions. INTRODUCTION CRA Limited is the largest mining group in Australia by value of sales and the second largest company in Australia in terms of share market capitalisation. In the past 25 years, CRA, its predecessors and affiliates have been involved in a number of mining and further processing developments in Australia and elsewhere. Many of these have been financed using project financing techniques. These include Comalco's development of the Weipa bauxite deposits in Northern Queensland in the late 1950's, the Hamersley iron ore developments in the Pilbara region of Western Australia in the mid 1960's, the Queensland Alumina Limited alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland, at about the same time, and the Bougainville copper project in 1969/70. In the past three years CRA has again utilised project financing techniques to fund its Tarong steaming coal project in Queensland, the Blair Athol steaming coal project also in that State and CRA's interest in the Argyle diamond project in the Kimberley region of Western Austrlia. PROJECT FINANCE DEFINED Nevitt Definition Nevitt's is the most frequently quoted definition - "A financing of a particular economic unit in which a lender is satisfied to look initially to the cash flows and earnings of the economic unit as the source of funds from which a loan will be repaid and to the assets of the economic unit as collateral for the loan." Risk and Balance Sheet Treatment It is important to focus in more detail on two aspects of project financing, risk and balance sheet treatment. The assessment of the various elements of risk in a project and the sharing of that risk between sponsors and lenders is the most critical feature. At one end of the spectrum is full absorption of risk by the sponsor(s). This can be described as "on risk" or "on credit" or "full recourse" to the sponsor(s) and is effectively a corporate financing. At the other end of the spectrum the lenders absorb the whole risk in a non-recourse financing which is "off risk" or "off credit" for the sponsor. The other aspect is the sponsor's balance sheet treatment. If the balance sheet of the economic unit undertaking the project and the financing need not be consolidated into the balance sheet of the sponsor (because ownership does not exceed 50%) then the financing may be described as off-¬balance sheet. If consolidation is required then the financing is described as on-balance sheet. Most project financings involve some recourse to the sponsor, i.e. they are limited recourse. Very few are non-recourse or off credit to the sponsor. Limited recourse financings may be on-balance sheet although many may also be off-balance sheet insofar as consolidation is concerned. However, sponsor support may very well be a contingent liability to the sponsor and require disclosure by way of note to the balance sheet should consolidation not be required. CORPORATE FINANCE CONTRASTED A financing which is on credit or full recourse to the sponsor, whether it is directly borrowed or guaranteed by that sponsor, is a corporate financing. Lenders will tend to base their credit assessment on a historical assessment of the sponsor's activities and its financial results rather than an assessment of the project or a detailed assessment of the future activities and prospects of the sponsor. PROJECT FINANCE - A BORROWER'S PERCEPTION Although CRA could choose to arrange all finance on a corporate basis (except perhaps for the very largest projects or acquisitions), project financing techniques provide a number of specific advantages which CRA has noted and which should be carefully considered by a project sponsor. Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is in the process of evolving a computer-based information system which will process all of the material selected for abstracting in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering and its related fields such as the earth sciences and technologies. This system is already operational to some extent and is expected to be fully utilized by 1971. The objective of CAS is to make chemical and related information more readily available, more usable and more used. Chemical Abstracts handle some 5000 abstracts weekly from 13, 000 journals and patents from 25 nations. These cover all of the 80 CA subject sections which relate to chemistry and also extend into areas of interest to geologists, mineralogists, and mining engineers. In this way, CAS fulfills its objective of complete coverage of its major fields, informative abstracting, and indexing to maximum specificity. The concept of a computer-based information system is that of a single machine-language data base into which the results of intellectual analysis of the literature are entered and from which computer programs produce a variety of publications and services applicable to the needs of a wide range of users.

THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment. The operations in Cuba have already been described by F. S. Norcross, Jr.7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years .4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high. An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product. The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill. The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petro¬graphic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R. J. Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University. They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports. Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging. It is, therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection. The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist. Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper; namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganiferous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts. By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane." The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all. However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances. This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed. The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals. Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. The following discussion deals primarily with coal of a wide size range as screenings and of wide density differences as uncleaned or run-of-mine screenings. If a mass of coal containing particles of a wide size range is subject to the stream action of a moving current of water, the small particles are transported farther than the coarser. Application of the coal hydrogenation process for the production of chemicals is described. It has been estimated that a plant to produce 31,090 bbl per day of chemicals and fuels would cost $326,- 000,000. These products would consist of 6.1 pct by weight tar acids, 50.8 pct aroma tics, 16.4 pct LPG, and 26.7 pct gasoline. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aro-matics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil—boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C—can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.' Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydrogen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. A two-year test conducted by the USBM's Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) has proven the feasibility of the yielding rockbolt, a concept which may prove very useful to the mining industry by providing ground support under a variety of conditions. The yielding rockbolt was originally developed in South Africa3 to overcome the limitations of conventional bolting in rock subjected to high-stress or rock burst conditions. The yielding effect is obtained by fitting the bolt prior to thread rolling with a smooth-bore die of internal diameter slightly larger than the shank diameter but smaller than the rolled thread diameter.

Seattle offered sunny, dry weather to about 2500 mining men who assembled September 10 to 14 for the 1961 American Mining Congress. The impact of snappy sessions on national mineral policy, state of the industry and foreign competition (to name only a few) was somewhat overshadowed by enthusiasm of conventioners for salmon fishing. This lordly fish, which mysteriously runs to its hatching place to spawn and die at this time of year, was not cooperating with the anglers in Puget Sound. However, this did not prevent consuming ample amounts of the deliciously prepared Quinault salmon at the "Potlatch" celebration.

The technique of unidirectional solidification has been applied to the A1-AI3Ni and A1-CuAl2 ezltectic alloy systems; the controlled microstructure of A1-A3Ni consists of parallel A13Ni whiskers emhedded in an aluminum matrix while the Al-CuAl2, system solidifies as parallel alternate lamellae of aluminm and CuAl2. Mechanical tests (tension and flexure) have shown that the particle-matrix interface bond formed during unidirectional solidification allowes for efficient load transfer from the matrix to the reinforcing phase. Strength and fracture characterstics of the alloys were studied as a function of phase orientation; the tensile strength of controlled Al-Al3Ni samples was 43,000 psi (three times greater than that of as-cast specime~s). The strength of the Al-CIA2, cutectic was studied as a function of lamellae-flexure stress-axis orientation using a microbend apparatus. A twofold increase in outer fiber stress was observed as the lamellae were rotated from a position of no reinforcing (perpendicular to the stress axis) to one of maximum reinforcing (parallel to the stress axis), The brittle reinforcing constituent in each alloy (A13Ni and CuAl2) was observed to he the nucleating phase for fracture. It is to be concluded from this investigation that unidirectionally solidified eutectic alloys have a potential use as reinforcing coniposite) materials. In a recent review article, Chadwick1 has described the work of many investigators in the area of controlled solidification of binary eutectic alloys. Thus far, more than twenty eutectic alloys have been unidirectionally solidified to produce structures consisting of two phases in the form of alternating lamellae or as whiskers embedded within a continuous matrix; in either case, the phases are aligned parallel to the growth direction. In particular, Kraft and Albright2 have shown that the Al-CuA1, eutectic alloy exhibits a lamellar microstruc- ture as a result of unidirectional solidification while Lemkey, Hertzberg, and Ford3 have studied the A13Ni whisker-aluminum matrix morphology in the A1-A13Ni system. Whether these alloys could exhibit reinforcing behavior would have to depend upon the strength and volume fraction of the reinforcing phase (AI3Ni and CuA12) and the nature of the bond between the reinforcing phase and the matrix. Hertzberg and Kraft4 have shown that the interface bond between chromium whiskers and a copper matrix in unidirectionally solidified Cu-Cr is particularly good while Lemkey and Kraft5 have reported chromium-whisker tensile strengths in excess of 1,000,000 psi. However, with the chromium volume fraction being less than 2 pct, no reinforcing behavior was displayed by the Cu-Cr alloy.6 In view of the encouraging results concerning the good interfacial bond and high strength of the reinforcing phase in the Cu-Cr system and preliminary mechanical test data reported by Lemkey et al.3 for the A1-A13Ni system, the A1-CuA1, and A1-A13Ni eutectic alloys containing 50 and 10 vol pct, respectively, of the reinforcing phase give promise of possessing mechanical reinforcing behavior. Based on this premise, the objective of the investigation was to study the strength and fracture behavior exhibited by these anisotropic microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Controlled Solidification Procedure. An extensive description of the technique of unidirectional solidification has been presented elsewhere.' However, the pertinent details for each eutectic system studied are discussed below. Al-A13Ni System. Several master heats of this alloy were prepared by vacuum-induction melting in an A12O3crucible and casting in SiO2 mold or by induction melting in alumina crucibles under argon. The initial heats were prepared from 99.99 pct A1 and 99.99+ pct Ni, while later heats used 99.999+ pct A1 and 99.99+ pct Ni. Specimens of these master heats were unidirectionally solidified using induction and resistance heating sources and argon atmospheres at growth rates from 1.1 to 28.7 cm per hr. Yield point measurements were made on polycrys-talline specimens of a iron deformed various amounts at 770, 1950, or 273°K, aged, and redeformed at 77: 195°, or 273°K. When the prestrain temperature is lower than that subsequent to aging, the yield point return is suppressed relative to specimens deformed at the same temperature both before and after aging. The degree of suppression is a function of both the magnitude of prestrain at the lower temperature and the difference between the deformation temperatures before and after aging. It is proposed that the suppression is caused by the formation of dislocation barriers during the initial low-temperature deformation. The aging kinetics of polycrystalline a-iron wires deformed at 77o or 303oK were studied at 44 " and 64 "C using internal friction measurements. No change was noted as a result of the difference in prestrain temperature. IN an earlier investigation1 it was observed that the return of the yield point was suppressed when a poly-crystalline specimen of a iron was plastically deformed at 77oK, aged at room temperature, and subsequently tested at room temperature. In order to investigate this observation, a research program was undertaken to measure the effect of prestrain temperature on the strain aging of a iron.' According to Thomas and Leak,3 return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,4 the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point upon restraining. In this experiment, both methods of measuring strain aging were employed in order to have two independent measurements of the strain aging phenomenon. In a previous study,5 the strain aging kinetics of a similar lot of a iron were measured for specimens which were prestrained and tested at the same temperature over the range of 77" to 273°K. Although some differences were found in the correlation of the two methods employed for measuring strain aging, the kinetics of strain aging were unaffected by the change of prestrain and test temperature. In another study,6 dislocation line tension and the density of the solute atmosphere were found to contribute to the return of the yield point when ingot iron specimens were prestrained at 303°K and tested at a lower temperature, namely 77°K. This paper is concerned with changes in strain aging kinetics produced by pre-straining at 77" to 303°K and testing at either the prestrain temperature or at higher temperatures up to 273°K. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The polycrystalline a iron specimens used in both the tensile and internal friction tests were 0.033-in. diam ingot iron wires, wet hydrogen treated and re-carburized. A more detailed procedure for processing a 3/16 in. ingot iron rod (nominal wt. pet composition: Fe - 0.013; C - 0.0125; Mn - 0.023; Si -0.005; P - 0.0023; S - 0.11; Cu - 0.004 N) to 0.033 in. diam specimens containing approximately 0.020 wt pet C and no detectable nitrogen with a grain diameter of 0.033 to 0.040 mm is given elsewhere.5 Immediately prior to testing, specimens were solution treated for 15 min at 700o ± 2°C in a static vacuum of less than 50 ?. of Hg and rapidly quenched into an ice-water bath while still enclosed in a 3 mm quartz vial. THE electric motor has steadily replaced the steam and air engine for use in mine hoists, until today a new installation with other than electric drive is a rarity. Much existing steam-driven equipment has been changed over to electric drive. Driving power has grown in capacity since the initial electric unit rated 10 hp installed at Aspen, Colorado, in 1888, to 3000 hp and 4000 hp in the United States, and to 5500 hp in Canada-the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Electric installations now total in the thousands of units, a growth largely made possible by the development of large central electric-power stations and the extension of electric-power service to more mining areas.

"HEREDITY"' in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mecha-nism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem.
