DURING the time I was in charge, of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:' "The iron ores at Tayeh lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between horn-blende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende." These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General Description of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being con¬nected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 56 li (16.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

MOST important of the various departments of a custom smelter, so far as the financial welfare of the plant and the confidence of shippers are concerned, is that responsible for correct weights, accurate moisture sampling, and the obtaining of control samples that are strictly representative of the lot of ore from which they come. Treatment rate schedules are based on the metal content of ores received, reduced to dry weight. These rates must be low enough to keep the ship- per from taking his business else- where and still must allow the smelter a profit. Assay results, likewise, must satisfy the shipper, but if they show too high a metal content for the ore they represent, the smelter will actually lose money. It is always considered, and constant checks through umpire assays prove, that laboratory results are closely correct, so the bur- den of the plant profit and loss and the satisfaction of the shipper rest squarely upon the sampling department.

The effect of such variables as feed size, particle shape, cleavage, and hardness on the relative proportion of impact, abrasion, and chipping events in a tumbling mill is demonstrated. The concept of an average event, which is a combination of the three comminution mechanisms, is introduced. It is postulated that the average event in a particular mill determines not only the size distribution but also the energy-size reduction relationship for the comminution process. Fragmentation of particles in tumbling mills appears to result from a combination of impact, abrasion, and chipping grinding.' The relative rates of size reduction attributable to any of the basic grinding mechanisms must depend upon a number of variables, such as feed size, particle shape, hardness, and the number and kind of particles in the mill. The purpose of this paper is to show experimentally how these variables in the properties of materials affect the size distributions obtained by grinding the material's in a laboratory tumbling mill. The resulting size distributions will be intetpreted in terms of a combination of three comminution mechanisms. METHODS AND MATERIALS In this study, minerals of widely differing properties were ground either separately or as mixtures in laboratory mills using rods or balls for grinding media. The materials used include quartz, Tuolomne, limestone (99.8% CaCO3), barite, corundum, galena, pyrite, glass beads, and crushed glass. The mill used was 8 in. in diam. and 9-1/4 in. long. For the ball milling tests, 17.6 kg of steel balls (36: 7/8 in. balls, 178: 1 in. balls, and 44: 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 in. balls) were used. For the rod milling experiments, 17.6 kg of steel rods 9-1/16 in. long (25: 5/8 in., 10: 3/4 in., and 5: 7/8 in. in diam.) were used. In each test, 1 kg of solids were ground wet at 60% solids at 77 rpm. In all cases except where otherwise specified, the feed to the mill was 4 x 8 mesh material. Size distributions of the ground products were determined by a wet-dry sieving procedure with Tyler series sieves. Size distributions of mixed products containing limestone were determined by dissolving the limestone with acid and sizing the residue. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION If the size distribution of the product from a tumbling mill depends upon the relative proportion of impact and attrition (abrasion and chipping) events, altering the grinding conditions may change these proportions and consequently alter the size distribution of the product. Data to illustrate this point can be taken from Gaudin's classic 1926 paper.2 In one series of experiments, Gaudin ground quartz of different initial sizes for four hours in a laboratory ball mill with 7/8-in. balls. In Fig. 1, his data are reproduced as the cumulative fraction finer than the stated size for the following initial feed sizes: 13.3 x 9.4 mm, 6.7 x 4.7 mm, 2.6 x 1.6 mm, and 0.83 x 0.59 mm. INTRODUCTION The Mount Isa Mine is a large modern underground mine located in North-Western Queensland, Australia. Two ore types are mined and treated separately. Currently silver-lead-zinc ore is mined at the rate of 2.6 million tonnes per annum and copper ore at the rate of 4.6 million tonnes per annum. The silver-lead-zinc orebodies are mined by sub level open stoping and cut and fill methods whilst all copper ore is extracted by various forms of sub level open stoping. The mining operations are highly mechanised and utilise diesel powered load-haul-dump units of various sizes, two and three boom face drilling jumbos, electric-hydraulic rotary-percussive ring drills, in-the-hole hammer drills, rotary blasthole drills, raiseborers, battery/trolley locomotives, a large fleet of rubber tyred service and supply vehicles plus light rockdrills mounted on airlegs, rail mounted overshot shovels and battery and diesel powered locomotives. All stoping production ore is extracted with diesel powered load-haul-dump units. The ore is tipped into orepasses which connect to the main rail haulage levels. On the haulage levels electric battery/trolley locomotives are used to pull rakes of bottom dump or side dump trucks which feed the ore into primary crushers. Following two stage crushing the ore is conveyed to the shaft and hoistod to surface in bottom dump skips. Each ore stream has its own rail transport system, crushing stations and hoisting shaft feeding separate concentrators. This paper will consider some aspects of the role of equipment and machinery in the growth of the mine, will discuss in some detail the machinery and equipment in use today and will conclude with a look at some possible developments in mining equipment for the future, with particular reference to the Mount Isa Mine. A summary of mining equipment in use at Mount Isa is given in the Appendix. THE PAST Silver-lead-zinc ore was discovered at Mount Isa in 1923 and within a very short time many small mines were being developed. However the rich surface ore traces did not continue and by 1928 Mount Isa Mines Limited had acquired sufficient leases to plan for a large scale mine to exploit the low grade orebodies. At this early stage it was recognised that the mine would need to adopt the most mechanised mining techniques then available in order to overcome its twin disadvantages of low graaes and extreme remoteness. The Company introduced bar mounted drifters and overshot shovels to replace hammer and tap and hand shovelling in development work and by 1930 headings were advancing at the rate of 30 metres per week. In keeping with the concept of mechanisation the early engineers designed the Man and Supply shaft with a very large, for those days, cage compartment measuring 3.8 m x 3.4 m. This shaft was the main means of access into the mine for 36 years until the K57 shaft (now R62 shaft) was commissioned in 1966. Man and Supply is still in regular use. Production commenced in 1931 at an annual rate of approximately 660 000 tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore. The mine was mechanised to an extent which was previously unknown in Australia; whilst the concentrator, smelter and power house utilised the most modern and efficient equipment available. Even so, the mine was very near to closure on several occasions and did not return a dividend to its shareholders for many years. Production levels remained at or slightly below 660 000 tonnes until a separate copper ore streani and mill was commissioned in 1953, doubling the existing production levels. The first underground crushers were installed at this time. Production rates expanded in the years between 1953 and 1973. By 1960 production reached 2740 000 tonnes of ore. In 1965-66 total production was 3650 000 tonnes and in 1973 the production rate plateaued at the current level.

Introduction This papers describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously (Lindroos and Koski, 1966; Villar and Dawe, 1975; Koski, 1977). Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and fur¬nished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate¬kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to: (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

The hole mas abandoned. At Mt. Bassett, lat (approx.) 26" 20' S.; long. (approx.) 149", Roma Blocks Oil Co. No Liability drilled to a depth of 4033 ft. The hole bottomed in granite. There were small showings of' oil and gas above bedrock in what may be Permian but is not yet determined. The company intends to run a formation tester. New South Wales.—At Kulnura, lat. (approx.) 33" S., long (approx.) 151°, the Kamilaroi Oil Company Ltd. (subsidiary of Oil Search Ltd.) drilled to a depth of 6293 ft. The Permian, probably Upper Marine Series, was reached. Drilling is to continue. Victoria.—At Romawi, lat. (approx) 37" 50' S., long. (approx.) 147" 45', a dry hole 3246 ft. deep bottomed in the Jurassic and was abandoned. It was drilled by the Governments of the Commonwealth and the State of Victoria. At Lakes Entrance, 1st. (approx.) 37" 50' S.; long. (approx) 748", a small showing of' oil (a few pints a day) was obtained from a well drilled 1275 It., to the Upper Oligocene-Glaucnnitc series, by the Austral Oil Drilling Syndicate, No Liability. Future Drilling Preparations is are being made by companies fur further test drilling in 1939, and the Governments of the Common wealth and the State of Victoria are continuing test holes for information only in the Gippsland district of Victoria. In Papua and New Guinea, no test drilling was done in 1938, but several companies are carrying on geological investigation and it is expected that, some test holes will be drilled during 1939.

I wish to call the attention of the Institute to a peculiar variety of anthracite which occurs in the Buck Mountain vein at our collieries at Drifton, and in the same and other veins in different localities in the anthracite coal-fields. It is known among the workmen as iron-gray or cast-iron. It has a dull, greasy appearance, as if a piece of ordinary anthracite had been rubbed with a dirty and greasy rag and allowed to dry. It was formerly considered a very impure coal containing a high percentage of ash, and was picked out of the coal and thrown away. But the following analysis of it and of its ash, made by Mr. J. Blodget Britton, of Philadelphia, shows that such is not the case, the percentage of ash not being much higher than that of the ordinary anthracites as they are prepared for market. ANALYSIS OF COAL. We found that it burned with intense heat, and apparently as freely as our other coal does. Mr. Britton is probably right in his view, that the difference in appearance is not due to impurities in the coal, but to the fact that the carbon is in a more or less graphitic form, as many of the standard coals are no purer. I bring this before the Institute as I know that a large quantity of this valuable fuel is thrown away every year, on account of its supposed impurities.

The relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heat,ing at 200" C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300" C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500" C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950" C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Material and Method The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent, copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to 1/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100" C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to . boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched. Results Data from the tests are shown in the table and plot (see Fig. 1); conductivity is referred to the International Annealed Copper Standard at 20" C. Conductivity hard is considerably less than conductivity soft.1 The increase is sharp when the wire anneals. The maximum, 101.15 per cent, in the particular material used, comes at 500º C.; thereafter the conductivity falls to 100.53 per cent. after 950" C. annealing, a drop of 0.62 per cent.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. They represented the following makes and models: 40 from the United States—namely, Ingersoll-Rand 18, 148, L-74, 24-70, N-72, N-75, R-72, 26, BAR-33, BCR-430, DCRW-23, RA-12, CA-31, CC-11; Denver 7, 107, WT-21, WT-31, WT-331, WT-337 (models WT with motor rotation, screw feed), 11, Waugh 93, 95; Waugh 16; Sullivan DR-6, DW-64, T-3; DP-321, DP-331; DA-21, DT-44, DT-421; Gilman AX-321 (motor rotation and air feed); Cleveland D-5; AIBQ, 44-SWR,

THE Clinton group of the Silurian holds the red or fossiliferous ore; its outcrops have been mapped by the State or U. S. Geological Survey. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama. There are places where it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step, faults bring up the ore in three or four separate ridges practically parallel. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. In examining some bore holes made in drilling for oil, the writer found the Clinton group continuing under the Warrior coal field wherever the drill has gone deep enough. It demonstrates the possibility of a source for red ore not seriously thought of until lately. The following bore holes made principally for oil, given in Bulletin No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 feet. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in section 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. The hole was continued by diamond drill from here. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton.

De Belgique, Rome, Fascicule 1, 17 to 28. Measurements show a negative anomaly, less densities of .the material below sea level. The author expresses it in terms of the thickness of rocks of an arbitrary density, 2.4, which might be considered wanting. The accordant heights of the summits, the depths of the folds, the deficiency in .gravity, and denudation he finds to be connected. The Alps float on the lightness of the folds of "sal" of weight 2.6 to 2.75 plunged into the heavier "Sima" according to a for-mula: P = h (2.7/2.8-2.7) where - P is the depth of fold-ing below sea level; 2.7 is the weight of the material accu-mulated in folding; 2.8 is the weight of the material dis-placed by it; and h is the mean height of the mountainous regions. For instance, between the valley of Saar and the Val de Bagne in Valais the depth of the folds according to Ar-gand's profiles is between 30 and 40 kilometers. The loss of gravity has been estimated in this region as 1450 X 2.4 = 3480 in units of weight. Obviously errors in the densities would profoundly affect the estimates of the thickness of folding, but his depths of folds are obtained from sections, and from them he works back to the densities. Wilser's investigations as to the best way of obtaining the weight of rocks per unit volume. The use of mercury for rocks affected by water as there recom-mended may easily give too large volumes unless 1 to 3 atm. pressure is used. Thick machine oil is recommended for large lumps of clay.

The same limitations' that characterized 1931 existed in the old fields of Indiana and Illinois during 1932. Prices remained low. The average for the year for Illinois and southwestern Indiana was $1.032 as against $0.852 for 1931 and $1.616 for 1930. In September a curtailment of production of about 25 per cent became effective and was continued to the end of the year. There were no new discoveries and very little wildcatting was done. Considering the age of the wells, and the number still producing, there were few abandonments. The most outstanding thing about the old fields in these states is their long continued productivity. Illinois The fields along the southeast end of the LaSalle anticline had their peak of 33,686,000 bbl. in 1908. In 1932, with a 25 per cent restriction for 355 months, these fields produced 4,661,000 bb1.l There were 52 new completions (most of them in old territory) and of these 33 were dry, 8 were gas, and 11 were oil wells. The new oil wells had a total initial of 102 bbl., or an average of 9.3 bbl. per well. Nineteen of the new producers were in Crawford County. There were about 200 wells abandoned in the old southeast fields in 1932 as compared to 210 in 1931. The greatest number, 86, were in Lawrence County. To the end of 1932, the four major counties—Clark, Crawford, Lawrence and Wabash—had produced almost 394,000,000 bbl. from 92,160 acres. Better than one-half of this was produced in Lawrence County from 26,240 acres. The Dupo area of Sinclair County had no additions to production although four wells were drilled. On the Jacksonville structure in Morgan County, six gas wells with an average depth of 300 ft. were drilled to sands in the base of the Pennsylvanian. They produced an open-flow total initial of 2,000,000 cu. ft. This gas will be developed further to supply a local market.

A presentation of the W-Ru constitution diagram is given. Techniques utilized in the determination of phase boundary values include electron micro-probe analysis of two-phased alloys and diffusion couples, as well as normal metallographic and X-ray methods. The primary features of the diagram are: 1) a terminal solid solution of ruthenium in tungsten with a maximum solubility of 23 at. pct Ru at 2300°C; 2) a terminal solid solution of tungsten in ruthenium with a maximum solubility of 48 at. pct W at 2205°C; 3) a o phase of maximum breadth about 6 at. pct based on the composition W3Ru2 which forms peritectically from the melt at 2300°C, and which decomposes eutectoidally at 1667 °C to form a twigs ten and 0 ruthenium; 4) a eutectic at 45 at. pct Ru and 2205°C with the products being o plus ß ruthenium. THE W-Ru diagram has previously been studied only in a cursory fashion. Raub and alter' obtained a 1400°C isotherm in which they observed no intermediate phases, and on which they established the limits of solubility as 36.5 at. pct W in ruthenium and about 1.5 at. pct Ru in tungsten. In addition, Obrowski2 found a o phase forming peritectically from the melt and existing only above 1650°C. Below this temperature the phase was presumed to decompose eutectoidally. The present work finds the diagram as given in Fig. 1. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials used for alloy preparation in determining the W-Ru constitution diagram were 99.9 pct pure ruthenium powder supplied by Baker Chemical Co., and 99.9 pct pure tungsten powder from General Electric Co. Typical analyses of these elements are given in Table I. Initial alloys at 10 at. pct intervals were prepared from the metal powders by the following method. Powders sufficient for 25 g of the alloys were weighed out with an accuracy of 0.1 mg and blended mechanically. After blending, the powders were compacted, in a steel die, at approximately 30,000 psi. The compacts were sintered in an electric vacuum furnace in order to remove adsorbed gases and to achieve partial densification prior to arc-melting. Vacua of 10-4 mm Hg or less were maintained in sintering as the furnace temperature was raised to approximately 2000°C. Sintering times ranged from 10 to 20 hr. The sintered compacts were arc-melted under a protective atmosphere of purified helium. Melting was conducted on a water-cooled copper hearth, utilizing a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. In the melting process, each alloy was turned over and re-melted on opposite sides from four to six times to ensure complete melting and to eliminate gross in-homogeneities. The arc-melter used had a vacuum capability of 5 X 10-6 mm Hg, and a leak rate of about 20 -liters per hr. Chemical analysis techniques for refractory metal-platinum group metal combinations are not well-established; therefore, composition control and determination depended principally upon weight-loss observations and calculations. This consisted in weighing each alloy after sintering and after arc-melting, and calculating the maximum and minimum composition values, assuming the total weight losses to be first all tungsten, and then all ruthenium. Since composition uncertainty was directly related to weight loss, care was taken to minimize losses in handling, compacting, and melting. THE British are worried about the postwar possibilities of their coal mining industry. Indeed, there are causes for this worry, with the aver- age 1943 cost of production at about $5.40 per long ton, compared to $3.20 in 1938. Average production per man day has dropped from 1.12 in 1938 to 1.03 long tons in 1943. As a comparison, production per man day in the United States is approximately 5 long tons. The average day wage in the British mines is now a little aver $4; in 1938 the average day wage was about $2.25. Great Britain produced 227 million long tons in 1938 from their deep mines, and in 1943 production was 194.5 million, with an additional 4.5 million from strip mines. To meet present wartime needs, output is being supplemented by the production of strip- mined coal, an industry that did not exist prior to the war. Strip mining is now producing at the rate of 15 million long tons per year.

THE work of, the Mining Methods Committee is now well under way. Following discussions previous to and during the February meeting, an Outline for Papers on Mining Methods was prepared, and over a thousand copies have now been distributed to committee men, to section secretaries and to members who have indicated any interest in the subject. The objective of the committee is to prepare a symposium on mining methods which will be of real practical value to the operator and engineer in the solution of every-day mining problems. It is planned to cover the entire field of mining in such a way that the different branches of mining, such as coal and ore (iron, copper, lead, zinc and precious metal) can benefit from the experience of the others at points where they have problems in common.. It is realized fully that each of these branches of mining possesses its own peculiar problems, but at the same time, there are prob-lems in connection with each, where the experience in others should be of value. The committee proposes to proceed along the following lines: 1. To present a general classification of mining methods, showing their inter-relationship, and at the same time .provide a common language for the discussion of mining methods and a nomenclature that will have the same meaning wherever used. A com-plete set of illustrations will accompany the classi-fication to make clear the terminology adopted and to show graphically the inter-relationship of methods. 2. To show the relationship between the physical characteristic of the deposit, the economic consider-ations and the. mining method., It is not proposed to treat this subject as a mere academic problem, but to secure reports from every mining company of impor-tance in this country, which will show what methods or modifications and combinations of methods have actually been applied and the physical conditions and economic considerations which have led to the adoption of these methods in each case. The Mining Methods Committee has drawn up an Outline for Papers on Mining Methods to be distributed among mining engineers and operators, giving in detail the information desired. This outline is the result of several months of careful thought and is a composite of the suggestions of many engineers and mining company officials from all parts of the United States.

The American mining industry is vigorous today because it is young. At a time when the ore deposits of central Europe, for example, were being exploited actively, those of the United States were lying practically untouched. The founding fathers of our republic were not interested in mineral wealth because they were ignorant in such matters; their preoccupations were with defence against the Indians, the clearing of the forest, and the starting of agriculture in their new domains. They had no idea of establishing a mining industry. The Indians whom the American colonists dispossessed had no mines; they used only the metal that was to be found lying on the surface of the ground. Their arrows and spears were tipped with flint, which likewise called for little digging, if any. The native copper that glacial action had torn from the lodes of the Lake Superior region and had carried into the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi was employed in the making of earrings, bracelets, knives, and scrapers. The same useful metal was found in many other places, in Virginia and Carolina, in Vermont and New Jersey, for example, but the Indians did not know how to melt it, much less how to smelt the ore, therefore they shaped it into tools and implements by hammering. Fortunately for them the hammering of the metal caused it to harden and therefore to become serviceable for implemental use. It is doubtful if they obtained the copper by actual mining, that is, by digging or excavating; it is true we find traces of such operations in the Keweenaw .peninsula of Michigan, but we have no

Each spring most secondary schools select their best student science exhibits, prepared during the preceding academic year, and send them to regional "Science Fairs", which now number over 220. Winner-finalists of these regional contests are then sent to the annual National Science Fair, conducted by Science Service, a non- profit institution for the popularization of science, for final judging. (The Fair is now known as the "National Science Fair-International" because of participation by finalists from Japan, Thailand, Germany, France, Sweden and Canada.) For the first time since the Fair was started in 1950, AIME participated in the awards presentation. Held this year in Baltimore, Md., from May 5 to 9, five members of AIME's Washington, D.C., Section consented to represent the Institute as judges. They were: Marlin J.
