The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on a11 week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by for- warding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

The annual Jackling Award Lecture, sponsored by the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, is intended to honor and commemorate one of the greatest mine-makers of all time, an innovator whose vision and determination made ore out of waste rock. He ushered in a new philosophy of mining which revolutionized some segments of the industry and notably affected our economy generally. To have been asked to given the Jackling Lecture this year is an honor that I scarcely deserve, but which I have accepted in humble gratitude. Although it is true that "many a mine has made the man," it is also true that while ore bodies are found, mines are made. That statement has been hammered into my skull many times by a man whose own career exemplifies its truth, a man who has been first and last a steadfast friend, who for a while was my boss and mentor, and who as one of this country's great mining geologists has laid his hand to the making of many a mine. I will doubly cherish the memory of the honor bestowed upon me because the presentation of the Jackling Award was made by this man. After the Lord made Dick Hunt he threw away the mold. Metals and other mineral products are essential ingredients of the social economy of the modern world. No well informed and thoughtful person can doubt that they will be indispensable to mankind as long as the fabric of civilization as we know it today can be held together. They are mined from ore bodies, which, unlike some other kinds of bodies, are physically inorganic and wholly incapable of reproducing themselves. Since in time they become mined out, an endless procession of new producers must be made by someone if the fundamental needs, to say nothing of the not so fundamental whims of an affluent society, are to be gratified. In saying that these mines must be made, I mean exactly that. It is my purpose to comment upon some of the problems we must cope with in making them. I shall try to avoid dwelling needlessly upon aspects of new mine development with which most people in this business are thoroughly familiar, and will attempt to discuss in a useful way some of the newer and more significant features of the economic climate in which these endeavors must be conducted. To begin with, an Almighty force put the ore into the ground, and selected the places in which to put it. Mankind was not consulted. Beyond that stage, however, mankind must find the ore deposits and contrive to extract their contents and put them into useful service. In doing this, he must use tools and techniques devised by man to overcome obstacles created in part by nature, but also in part by man himself. And most importantly of all, in making the tools and applying the techniques, he must use people. In the whole process the most pliable ingredient at hand-and also the most unpredictable-is people. Mines play out, and men die. As time goes on, we will have new mines, and they must be made by new men. INTRODUCTION A prerequisite to the evaluation and management of oil properties is accurate information derived from the analysis of core samples; but reliable data, such as porosity and permeability, can result only if all oil and water have been removed from the core samples analyzed. The most common method of core cleaning used to date has been Soxhlet extraction—a somewhat static technique, which depends upon the slow diffusion of hot solvent through the core sample. Soxhlet extraction performs satisfactorily only with highly permeable samples and at best requires long cleaning periods. The centrifuge method was developed in 1951 by Continental Oil Co. to overcome the inefficiencies inherent in the Soxhlet method. The new method is basically an operation in which hot solvents are caused to flow through the samples under the influence of centrifugal force. The centrifuge unit has proved so successful that samples which formerly required days for partial extraction can now be completely cleaned in approximately one hour. The original idea was conceived in 1950 by Elmer S. Messer, whose early experiments consisted of flowing solvent over sandstone samples suspended in a revolving basket and driven by a vertically mounted vacuum cleaner motor. Results were so outstanding that more permanent units were constructed. A modified model using this basic design was recently built by Core Laboratories, Inc., and is now used regularly in their operations. DESIGN Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the two extractors routinely used to clean small core plugs in the Production Research Div. of Continental Oil Co.'s Ponca City laboratories. For illustrative purposes, the basket from one of the units has been removed, and because both extrac- tors are of identical design only one is described in the following discussion. Each extractor unit consists of a centrifuge and a solvent still. The core basket of the centrifuge is made of mild cold rolled steel 7 1/2 in. in diameter and 1 1/8 in. deep. The basket holds 18 1-in. samples (cubical or cylindrical) and is attached directly to a cone fitted to the shaft of the motor. Both the outer rim and the hollow hub of the basket contain perforations for the passage of solvent and extract. The solvent is delivered to the perforations by means of a copper tube inserted into the hollow hub. The motor is a vertical tool post grinder motor; (115 v, 5.6 amp, 0-60 cycles, AC-DC, rated at 1/3 hp). It has a rated speed of 10,000 rpm under full load and 15,000 rpm with no load. Variation of speed is obtained by the use of a variable transformer. The solvent still was constructed from one end of a stainless steel oxygen bottle by inserting a heating element, sight glass, and piping as shown on the schematic diagram, Fig. 2. The heater used was a three-position, 1,000 w, 115-v, immersion type. Intermittent flow of solvent to the centrifuge is obtained by means of a siphon bottle inserted between the condenser and the centrifuge.

THE meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Annual Meeting of the Institute maintained the high standard set in previous years, and attendance of member: of the Division was at a new high. The impact of the war was evident not only in the tone of many of die papers but also in the presence at the meeting of many of our members now serving in the armed forces of our-country. Ken interest was manifested in all papers presented and the discussions which followed developed many additional facts of interist and importance. The first activity of the Division was the joint meeting of the Papers and Programs and the Publications Committees on Monday afternoon; at which time definite plans were formulated for a simplification and co-ordination of the work of the committees.

The entire production of oil in Ecuador so far has come from the Santa Elens Peninsula, Province of Guayas. Both the shallow fields of the northern and the deeper fields of the southern part of the peninsula have been in constant exploitation, though the former are of doubtful economic value. In Table I herewith, which commences with the total amounts produced by the various companies up to 1940, annual company totals are given for the succeeding years. The figures for 1944 have been partly estimated. Table 2 gives figures on casinghead gasoline. Shell Company of Ecuador (formerly known as Anglo-Saxon) has continued active exploration in the Oriente region east of the Andes, and during 1944 the Company's first wildcat well was spudded in. International Ecuadorean Petroleum Co. (formerly International Petroleum Co., Limited) has pursued an active exploration campaign since the latter part of 1939, and a drilling string was placed in operation about a year later. A second string of tools was added during 1943 and a third a few months ago. Ten wildcats, all dry, have been completed in this period, two wells are drilling at the present time and other locations are on the program. Seven of the wells thus far drilled are in the area between Guayaquil and the Santa Elena Peninsula, one up the Daule River beyond Balzar, one on Puna Island in the Guayas Estuary and one in the northern province of Esmeraldas. Both the present drilling wells are in the Guayaquil-Santa Elena zone. The situation in regard to concessions has changed during the past four years because I.E.P.C. has made its selections from the extensive Daule-Guayas Study Concession, as a result of which large tracts were returned to the Government; because of the expropriation of the holdings of the "Ecuapetrol," a German concern whose acreage has passed into other hands; the Peruvian-Ecuadorean boundary settlement, which has reduced Shell's holdings somewhat; and the transfer of most of the holdings of the Cia. THE maps of our large mines are usually prepared with the greatest care; and it is somewhat singular that, in comparison with the great amount of time and money spent in surveying and platting, so little actual use is made of them. Almost the only purpose for which a completed survey-map is afterwards consulted, is the determination of the relative position of the different workings to each other, and to the boundary-lines of the property. After the completion of such a map, it should be made the beginning of another, and in most cases a far more important, undertaking, namely, its utilization as -a starting-point for a complete inventory of the company's underground possessions. The ordinary mine-survey map, being nothing but a record of what has been done, is, in one sense, only ancient history. To increase its value, such additions should be made as will render it a complete statement of the amount and value of ore in sight at any particular time, and a guide for future develop¬ments. Comparatively little extra labor is involved in this undertaking, since the larger and most expensive part of the work has already been completed when the mine has been surveyed and mapped. The necessary additions consist in working out, and platting on the maps, the geology of the mine as exposed in the workings, in such a manner that the geological survey may be of daily use in the development and operation of the mine. The first step towards the production of a geological map consists in tracing individual level-sheets from the general or composite map. The area to be included, outside of the property in question, will depend very much on local conditions; but, for geological, legal and commercial reasons, it should be extended as far as reasonably practicable. LABOR shortages, rising wages, and changes in moisture and fines content of the ore necessitated a review of the flowsheet at Warren Foundry & Pipe Co's. Mt. Hope, N. J. Mines Div. This plant had been designed prior to World War II, and started operations in January 1945. When this operation was designed there was an oversupply of labor in the area, wages were at a reasonable level, the run-of-mine ore was low in moisture, and there was a limited amount of fines. These factors all favored use of hand picking for cleaning rougher lump concentrate. Since that time, many changes have occurred. The proximity of defense industries and large military installations, has created one of the most acute labor shortages in the country. This labor shortage together with present wage levels, and the increase in moisture and fines in the ore created several problems. The increase in moisture and fines may be attributed to changed mining methods, the extensive use of sprays, and the opening of new mining areas bringing an increase in ground water. [ ] Two problems were presented by the increase in moisture and fines. The first was that lump ore arrived at the open hearth in an unacceptable condition, due to the segregation enroute of the large amount of fines that had adhered to the lumps. The second problem was that high magnetite content fines coated the large lumps, making it difficult for pickers to distinguish middling by other than the relative weight. [ ]

ON THE QUESTION of postwar controls there are today three schools of though ; some advocate state control of everything the socialists ; second are those who advocate the removal of all governmental control over industry - the freedom of enterprise ideal ; and third are those who advocate a middle course - sufficient control to stabilize economic and industrial life, and to prevent violent fluctuations such as we saw in the interwar years. I advocate this third course. I firmly believe un free enterprise, but not in freedom of enterprise, or laissez faire, and there is a great and significant difference between these two.

THE properties of the Patiño Mines and Enterprises Consolidated, Inc., a New York corporation, are near Llallagua in the department of Chayanta in the west central part of Bolivia, South America, about 80 miles southeast of Oruro and 250 miles southeast of La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia and its virtual capital. The properties are accessible by railroad from three points on the west coast-from Mollendo, Peru, across Lake Titicaca, from Arica by way of La Paz, and from Antofagasta, Chile. The latter route, although the longest, is recommended by the companies as affording a more gradual introduction to the high altitudes; the mine being 13,000 ft. above sea level. The company operates its own railroad from its properties at Uncia to Machacamarca on the Chile & Bolivia R. R., a distance of 60 miles. This railroad is well equipped and well operated, and its location among the mountains surrounding Uncia represents excellent engineering skill. In fact all of the railroads, although they are of only a meter gage, are remarkable for the excellence of their construction, the arrangement of their dining and sleeping cars and the precision of their operation. There is only one drawback to rail- road and hotel accommodations and that is the absence of heating facilities, which does not seem to affect the natives but keeps a tenderfoot's teeth chattering continually. The company is a consolidation of the Patiño company, owning properties at Uncia, with the Compafiia Estanfera de Llallagua, a' Chilean corporation owning contiguous properties at Llallagua. Before the consolidation these companies were deadly enemies, and there still remain at the surface plant at Uncia the fortifications and underground defences provided during the warfare between the two factions. Also, in the Azul, or "Blue" tunnel at the junction line between the two properties is a strong steel barricade still bearing marks of the bullets fired during the various armed tilts between the workmen of the two companies. The headquarters for the mining operations and the milling plant have been moved since the consolidation from the original location at Uncia to the Llallagua side of the mountain, where the Chilean company's operations were carried on. The historic old town of Uncia, with its massive stone buildings of Spanish design, is a wreck, while the Llallagua side is being rapidly built up with modern structures.

DESPITE the fact that a combination of metals-aluminum-zinc-tin, and sometimes aluminium-zinc-cadmium-is extensively used for aluminum solders, as well as for die-castings, the constitution of these alloys has not yet been made clear. I. BINARY SYSTEMS The system aluminium-zinc is the basis of the ternary alloys under consideration. Their composition was made sufficiently clear by the investigations of Roscnhein and Archbutt,1 Bauer and Vogel,2 Sander .and Meissner,3 Hanson and Gayler4 and Isihara.5 Only the temperature of decomposition of the crystals s seems still to be doubtful, whether it is considered as a compound of Al2Zn3 (according to Bauer and Vogel) or as an intermediate phase of variant composition (according to Hanson and Gayler). This temperature is given by most of the authors, as in the neighborhood of 256° C., only Isihara giving 280° C. As its accurate determination is of special importance in the study of the ternary alloys under consideration it was experimentally controlled in the following manner: An alloy corresponding in composition to the formula Al2Zn3 was made, in which the temperature effect was found to be the greatest. This was drilled and a silver-constantan thermoelement inserted into the cavity so as to be in direct contact with the alloy. The whole was then very slowly heated and the heating and cooling curves determined. The transition temperature from the heating curve was found to be 281° C., whereas-from the cooling curve it was 252° C.

In the USSR, the Moscow Institute of Radio Electronics tronics and Mining Electro-Mechanics (MIRGEM) has started what it hopes will become a nationwide movement to educate mining students in the precise specialties that industry has come to require. Courses for mining engineers, the MIRGEM faculty proposes, should dovetail as exactly as possible with specific jobs available in the mining profession. Acting upon this thesis, MIRGEM revised its own curriculum in 1962 and has since presented an over-all plan for Soviet mining education before two mining school conferences as well as the Ministry of Higher Education and a number of major Soviet industrial ministries. The plan was universally approved with some suggested revisions. SOVIET MINING EDUCATION TODAY At present, mining education in the Soviet Union covers the exploitation of solid minerals and raw materials, including coal as well as ferrous and nonferrous metals. The extraction, storage, and refining of oil and gas is treated as a separate discipline. In all, there are 33 Soviet universities and institutes that train mining engineers for careers in the industrial, research and educational fields.

The Camaguey brown iron-ore deposit covers the top of Sari Felipe hill, the nearest point of which lies 14 miles NW. of the city of Camaguey. While there are several low flat-topped hills in the vicinity covered with a more or less continuous mantle of brown iron-ore, the deposit of San Felipe hill is the only one of any size and importance, and the name " San Belipe district" is proposed for the region. The deposit extends in a NW-SE. direction for a distance of about 10 miles, with an average width of 5 miles. The location is shown in Fig. 1, a sketch-map of the eastern part of Cuba. Fig. 2 is a map of the San Felipe district. 2. Description. The district is mentioned by Spencer,' who says: " The Cubitas iron-ore fields are situated from 12 to 15 miles north of Camagueg City, in the province of Camagueg.....Within an area measuring roughly 10 miles east and west and 4 miles north and south, there are several flat-topped mesas rising 300 to 400 ft. above the level of an almost featureless plain which extends for many miles in all directions except toward the north." With the exception of the discrepancy in his statements .as to the distance from Camaguey and the area of the hill, which is over 50 sq. miles, his description is a very good one. (Chattanooga Meeting, October, 1908.) THE immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages-in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted ; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, we Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. WHAT DID MR. GAYLEY INVENT Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley's first patents. The release of these data would benefit the mining industry as a whole. Particularly valuable would be the details of drilling programs that have been tested by actual mining operations, as most of the available published material is unsupported by production records. The scope of this paper is limited to a few of the commonest problems of interpreting diamond-drill core and sludge samples and the deviation of holes. It does not include the description of routine operations performed by the drillers, nor the estimation of ore reserves. The methods of calculating reserves have been described 25,26,31,32.50,65 but more information is needed on the results shown by actual mining operations. CORE SAMPLING The accuracy of diamond-drill-hole sampling depends in large measure on the percentage of core recovery. As a general rule, the longer the run, the poorer is the recovery. Although the longer runs allow cheaper drilling costs, the determining factor should be the percentage of recovery desired. The problem is one of balancing accuracy against costs. Holes of larger diameter may show improved recovery, except as Joralemon* points out that there are some conditions in which small holes give better core recovery than large holes. This is particularly true, he says, in rocks like shattered quartzite, where larger core tends to break in angular fragments and grind up, while the diameter of smaller core is less than the distance between joint planes and grinding is not so serious. In a large measure the length of the sample run should depend on the type of deposit. Favorable drilling may allow uniform sample runs of 5 ft., 10 ft., or perhaps 20 ft. In veins or beds of relatively narrow widths and changing characteristics, however, the ore zone may be overrun and ground in a core barrel full of waste rock. Generally it is desirable to break the sample at a change in the rock or ore. Such a change, often indicated by a color change in the sludge water, should be a signal for the driller to make a "dry" block and to pull out that run regardless of the length.
