No attempt will be made here to review the previous work done by investigators on the general subject of inclusions, because it was discussed sufficiently in an early cooperative bulletin of this series (No. 36, 1928), and reference was then made to general bibliographies. The work described in this present bulletin deals directly with the study of the mechanism of deoxidation of steel with aluminum and the formation of inclusions containing alumina. Unquestion- ably, such inclusions are encountered in most steel-making practices and little has been done to determine their characteristics. Aluminum is used to ensure rapid deoxidation during the solidification stages of the steel. For this reason the possibilities of inclusion elimination are slight and alumina-containing particles will undoubtedly be present in the ingot. Besides this common practice, aluminum is often used in the ladle with other deoxidizing agents such as silicon and manganese. Ladle additions of aluminum are made to rimming steels to obtain the correct partial deoxidation desired in this type of steel. In killed steels the aluminum is added to ensure soundness, as far as blowholes are concerned, in the ingot. In either rimmed or killed steels, alumina or alumina-containing inclusions are found therein, the amount and type depending on the oxidation of the metal, the amount of aluminum added, and the addition of other deoxidizers.

ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core. For this reason neither analysis of core recovered (amounting to 37.5 pct of approximately 10,000 ft of hole drilled) nor sludge analysis considered separately would give correct assays. The following equation has been adopted: actual weight theoretical actual weight core — theoretical weight sludge Drilling is done un.der contract. Collection of core and sludge samples together with double-checked assaying is done by the company. Microscopic, specto-graphic, and X-ray examination of rock specimen saved is carried on at the University of Utah. A fund, set up by Kennecott Copper Corp. at the University, has encouraged cooperation in solution of mining research problems. The drill used is a Longyear hydraulic powered by a Waukesha 26-hp gasoline motor. A pump, Bean Royal type, is powered by a 7-hp Briggs-Stratton gasoline motor. Weight of unit is 4000 lb and is placed under tripod of 35-ft wood poles within a 25-ft sq area. The following results have been attained: Avg depth of hole drilled, ft 1215 Avg drilling depth per 8-hr shift, ft 10.11 Core Size, In. Avg depth of NC casing, ft 21 2 11/16 Avg depth of NX casing and size core, ft 178 2Ye Avg depth of BX casing and size core. ft 427 1% Avg depth of AX casing and size core, ft 585 1 5/32 Through the use of metal sludge collection boxes, 12 ft long, 18 in. wide, and varying from 12 to 24 in. in depth, sludge recovery has been maintained above 95 pct. Samples, both core and sludge, are assembled for each sample interval and averaged in 50-ft bench increments. Determinations for mineral values are made at both the mine and mill. Assay results varying in excess of 0.05 of copper assay values are rerun to determine correct assay. The organization chart for the Kennecott Utah copper mine is shown in Fig. 1. The Utah mine requires approximately four men per shovel shift to drill solid rock, properly slope banks, and trim loose material from the top of bench sections in making them safe for men and equipment working below. During recent years, while the mine has been worked day and night, powder crews have worked day shift only. Series of toe holes drilled back of advancing electric shovels comprise approximately 70 pct of all mine drilling. These holes, spaced about 21 ft apart, have a depth of 24 ft. Of the footage drilled, 25 pct is for vertical holes either 24 or 28 ft deep, spaced about 28 ft centers along the top rim of banks. This combination of toe holes, using an Ingersol-Rand DA 35 drifter mounted on a tripod and the vertical holes using an Ingersol-Rand Type X71 wagon drill is standard practice above the pit elevation. These benches are 68 ft high, with a few exceptions, while benches below the pit elevation are 50 ft high and require very little drilling other than toe holes. Five benches, varying in height from 80 to 100 ft, require a combination of toe holes plus vertical holes and bank holes or electric churn drill holes. Bank holes using the DA 35 drifter and electric churn drill using Bucyrus-Erie Model 29T, account for 5 pct of feet drilled. Until the past year, drilling of fill material on upper levels was accomplished by churn drill method. Wagon drills are now used for fills because they can be set up and drill a hole an hour. It is necessary to run an air drill 7 hr for each 8-hr shovel shift. Average drilling rates during the past year were as follows: DA 35 drifter using 2 and 3-man crews — 4.36 ft per man hr X 71 wagon drill using 2-man crews — 6.45 ft per man hr DA 35 drifter bank holes, 3-man crews — 2.53 ft per man hr Bucyrus-Erie churn drill, 2-man crews —1.9 ft per man hr Total mine avg — 4.57 ft per man hr Mine practice assigns powdermen to job locations where they perform all drilling and blasting work within the area. Almost as much labor is consumed in springing and loading holes as in drilling them. Average powder consumption is approximately as follows: Per Electric Shovel Shift, Lb To spring and chamber holes — 50 Blasting — 500 Trim banks — 50 One fifth of all powder used is Hercules hercomite bag powder while four fifths is Hercules gelamite 65 pct strength in 1 Vi in. x 8 in. sticks. Frozen material, overhanging from top banks, creates a winter hazard to shovel operators and equipment. Experiments are being conducted with a high-speed Hercules powder in an effort to eliminate this condition. Banks are trimmed by powdermen who lodge 8 or 10 bundles of powder, containing 15 or 20 sticks each, across the upper surfaces of each working face. To each bundle of powder is attached a primer with 6-ft fuse which is lighted as the powdermen, who have lowered themselves down the bank on ropes, ascend to safety. Three angle dozers, D8 caterpillars, make grades and move supplies for the average 31 drilling machines working daily. Compressed air is furnished by three Ingersol-Rand compressors, each with rated capacity of 3750 cu ft of air per min at 100 lb reservoir pressure.

- Introductory IN 1882, The Arizona Copper Co. Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and in October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-sulphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The, sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. The average yearly production from this company's mines and reduction works from 1885 to date has been: Pounds 10 years ended 1894 6,864,902 10 years ended 1904 20,439,614 10 years ended 1914 : 32,665,905 Part of year 1915, to Sept. 12 30,206,106 4 months of 1916, to June 15,964,840 June, 1916...: ? 4,900,000 Construction on a new smelting plant was started in February, 1912, and finished in February, 1914. THE Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., is unique in this country in that it serves all phases of the iron and steel industries. Through its publications, its meetings, and its sponsorship of new technical developments in the industries, it has proved of great value. The various technical committees of the Division are the nucleus around which this service can be developed. The Blast Furnace and Raw Materials Committee has done excellent work. The need for beneficiation of iron ores is increasing and the economics of this operation are developing more and more in favor of increased activities. Ores that are slightly undergrade should be concentrated up to grade to supplant the present practice of mixing with higher-grade ores to bring up the average composition. Marginal ores that are not now being mined, or that are being mined and piled for future use, should be concentrated. The development of the use of sinter in the blast furnace, because of the elimination of fines, the advantage of better sizing of the charge, the resulting reduction of coke consumption, and increased output of pig iron per furnace, will make concentration and sintering become practical ahead of its natural time.

THE Iron and Steel Division has shared in the general increased activity of the industry. The fall meeting at Chicago was not only well attended but particularly characterized by the virility and scope of the discussions at the various sessions. The program for the February meeting indicates a similar interest in technological developments. The Blast-Furnace Committee continues to have the hearty support of the industry with discussions of such a nature as to be of real help to the operator as well ass the technologist. The work of the Open-Hearth Committee continues to be outstanding, with ever increasing attendance and ever mounting interest in the meetings. Formation of a conference on the physical chemistry of steelmaking has given those interested in this phase of work an organization allowing the same

AlloTs of copper and silicon have been known for one hundred years or more but the commercial development of this type of alloy has taken place during the past few years. In 1905, Sperry l proposed the use of copper-silicon alloys for springs and other purposes for which copper-tin bronzes were used. Some attention was given to this proposal at the time but no one succeeded in producing a practical alloy containing more than a fraction of a per cent. of silicon. The equilibrium relations of the copper-silicon system were studied first by Rudolfi2 and later by Sanfourche 3 and Corson. 4 The constitution of the system has also been recently investigated by Matuyama, 5 and in the laboratories of the American Brass Co. by Smith. 6 Some of the physical properties of the copper-silicon alloys have been investigated by Norbury7 and by Geiss and Van Liempt.8 Summarizing the results of various investigators of the constitution of copper-silicon alloys, the solubility reaches its maximium value, 6.7 per cent. silicon, between 721" and '782" C. At 852" (1. the solubility is 5.25 per cent., while at 400" C. it is only 4.1 per cent. silicon. The copper-silicon alloy begins to get so hard at about 3 per cent, silicon that it is difficult to manage. It was found by Jacobs that the addition of manganese to this alloy considerably improved the working

There is evidence that study of minerals now considered to have susceptibilities too low for magnetic separation should be continued. Present concepts may be false. INFORMATION on magnetic properties of minerals other than magnetite is scanty and sometimes erroneous. Often there is no information at all. W. R. Crane's table of tractive forces published in 1901 is still the best guide in the field, but Crane's data can be used as a guide only, since he ignored such important factors as impurities in the minerals, size, and packing effect. During the 1930's work by the U. S. Bureau of Mines added greatly to knowledge of the behavior of certain minerals in a magnetic field. The USBM bulletin gave for the first time complete magnetic characteristics for magnetite and fragmentary data for a few other minerals. The work reported here covers a study of the magnetic-susceptibility relationships of the wolframite series of minerals and sphalerites as related to their chemical compositions. Theories are proposed to explain divergences found from commonly accepted beliefs. Gouy Method for Determining Magnetic Susceptibility: The Gouy principle has been adequately described in the literature1-3 and applied in various ways.'- It may be summarized by stating that a body of material (gas, liquid, solid, or powder mixed with gas or liquid) of cylindrical shape changes in apparent weight if suspended with one end in a zone of higher magnetic field strength than is found in that portion of the field surrounding the other end of the cylinder. This may be expressed as K2 - K1 A (H2 - H2) - mg. [1] In determining the susceptibility of mineral specimens by the Gouy method, the mineral is reduced to a fine powder and packed in a glass weighing tube. The income of the Institute is derived mainly from dues, advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

In view of their size and favorable characteristics, Shell's heavy-oil fields on the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela — known as the "Bolivar Coast" — are obvious candidates for the application of thermal recovery methods. During the last decade various methods have been tested, such as steam drive,', steam soak and in-situ combustion.3 Steam soak was discovered as a promising production method rather accidentally in 1969, during early steam drive testing in the Mene Grande Tar Sands1 When steam erupted at the surface due to breakdown of the overburden, the injection wells were back-flowed to relieve the reservoir pressure. This resulted in high oil production rates, all the more impressive because the reservoir is unproducible by primary means. It was concluded that injection of limited amounts of steam might be a very effective method for stimulation of heavy-oil wells. To obtain information that would be more widely applicable, testing of the process was continued in the eastern part of the Tia Juana field (Fig. 1). Here even more favorable results were obtained than in Mene Grande. This created sufficient confidence to prompt a large-scale project, which was considered essential for an adequate evaluation of ultimate recovery, steam requirements, mechanical problems and economic prospects. To obtain an early answer on the ultimate recovery a fairly depleted area was selected in the western part of the same field ("A" in Fig. 1). The first steam was injected in March, 1964. This paper describes the performance until the end of 1966. The production mechanism and well inflow performance are discussed in some detail. In view of the favorable results obtained so far, steam soak operations have expanded considerably since the start of this project. Presently, five other projects are under way, of which two are about the same size as the one under discussion, with further extensions being programmed. Description of the Project Reservoir Data Shell's part of the Main Tia Juana reservoir has a proven area of 8,800 acres and an average net oil sand thickness of 130 ft. It contained an initial quantity of 2,750 million bbl of stock tank oil (STOIIP), with an API gravity ranging from 10 to 15 API and a viscosity of 100 to 10,000 cp (at 122F). As a geological unit it is known locally as the Lower Lagun-illas member of the Lagunillas formation, which is early Miocene in age. The sand bodies are believed to be distributary channel sands deposited in a lower coastal plain. Most of the channel sands have lateral and some vertical communication. The field was developed mainly in the period from 1936 to 1950. The ultimate primary recovery is estimated at 18.1 percent of STOIIP, of which 12.5 percent STOIIP had been produced by the end of 1963 from some 540 wells. By then the average pressure had decreased from an initial value of 960 to 550

WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.

The primary recrystallization textures of 11 single crystals cold rolled 70 pct were determined. The effect of crystal orientation on recrystallization behavior was investigated also and found to be large. An exception was found to the relationship that strong components of the recrystolliza-tion texture are rotated from the cold rolled texture by 30° about <110> axes, but generally this relationship was found to hold quite well. Evidence supporting oriented nucleotion was found and discussed in terms of probable active slip systems and <110> edge dislocations. THE present paper is one of a series&apos;.&apos; on recrys-tallization phenomena in cold rolled 31/4 Si-Fe single crystals and is mainly concerned with the textures produced on recrystallizing from stable end orientations. Data for the cold rolled textures of the crystals used have been reported by Koh and Dunn." Their results showed that the sharpness of the cold rolled textures varied throughout the range of stable end orientations and that the tendency to re-crystallize was related to the sharpness of the cold rolled texture, wherein the rate of recrystallization increased and the size of recrystallization grains decreased with decreasing sharpness of the cold rolled texture. In the project under consideration the cold rolled crystals involved a range of initial orientations that, together with those studied earlier,&apos; provide information on several points. The first point is whether the recrystallization texture from a (111) [112] cold rolled texture, a stable end orientation that can be approached from different directions, correlates in any way with the initial orientation before cold rolling, or whether the recrystallization texture is entirely determined by the observable features of the cold rolled texture. The second point involves a preliminary study to see if the main components of the recrystallization textures correlate with the most probable active slip systems. The third point is to determine what effect departure from slip on one slip system has on the tendency to recrystallize. Experimental Procedure Nine specimens from a previous investigation and two additional ones from thicker stock (lot D) but of similar composition to the others were used in the present work. The latter two crystals, like the nine, were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pct and the amount of widening was determined. Depending on their primary recrystallization behavior, the cold rolled crystals were given short or long anneals at temperatures of 980°C or higher. Table I summarizes the data on initial orientations, the textures obtained by cold rolling, and the anneals given to provide samples for the present work. Fine grained specimens were thinned to 0.002 in. thickness and placed in an integrating specimen holder. Chart recordings using a transmission X-ray method and MoKa radiation were obtained for diffraction from (110) planes. This method,&apos;,3 which gives data for all of the pole figure except a central region of 30" radius, proved sufficient to give generally five, and sometimes six, of the six possible pole concentration areas of any one component of the texture. These data, therefore, were generally adequate for a positive identification of each component present. The first texture obtained for specimen B-2 was poorly defined because of too coarse a grain structure and therefore too few crystals in each component for satisfactory X-ray reflections. The same

It is well-established that hydrostatic pressure distribution is hardly achieved during uniaxial compaction of powders. All the previous investigations1-4 give consistent results and this variation is attributed to the die-wall friction. The conclusions are based on measurements of the density of very small portions of the compact. Although the analysis of the density or the strain distribution in the compact is very helpful in obtaining information about the stress distribution within a powder compact, it does not describe the problem from a more fundamental point of view. The densification in metal powder compacts takes place chiefly by plastic deformation (ignoring particle rearrangement) at the points of contact of the powder particles. The onset of yielding and subsequent growth of the contact areas (for spherical powders) take place fixed by a constant stress equal to three times the yield stress in tension or compression,5-7 assuming little or no work hardening. Therefore, by deforming spherical powders in the die and measuring the contact areas on each particle, the load at each contact point can be determined. In the present investigation, this was done by hot-pressing uniform spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The details of the experiment have been described elsewhere.&apos; The spheres were studied for the size and the number of contact points on each particle using a specially designed goniometer. It was found that the deformed faces that were approximately normal to the direction of pressing were about 2.2 times larger than those parallel to the direction of pressing. Fig. 1 shows the typical deformed sphere. A detailed study showed that the mean value of the contact areas on each sphere was within 5 pct for all the spheres in the die (ignoring those touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die).&apos; The spheres touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die were found to have larger contact areas (8 to 10 pct) which indicates higher pressures in these regions of the compact and thus higher compact densities in these regions. These results show that density distribution calculated from such an experiment will give results consistent with the previous investigators. Langenecker has reported significant reduction in strength of high-strength metals during ultrasonic t&apos;ibration. Decreases in static yield stress an order of magnitude greater than the calculated stress amplitude of vibrations were reported by him for a stainless steel and for tungsten. in the present work, attempts were nzadc to verify such large reductions in yield and flats stresses using resonant librations of measured amplitudes. The results show that both the soft metals (copper and aluminum) and the high-strength metals (sleels) hare reductions in yield and .flow stresses no larger than the stress amplitude of libration. BLAHA and Langenecker,&apos; investigating the effect of vibratory stresses on the deformation of zinc and aluminum, found a decrease in the static yield and flow stresses approximately equal to the vibratory stress imposed. Langenecker later extending this work to high-strength metals such as stainless steels and tungsten2 found a much larger effect. In these metals the static yield and flow stresses decreased by an amount more than an order of magnitude greater than the calculated vibratory stresses. It was suggested that this phenomenon could be a serious hazard to high-strength structures in an acoustic environment, such as a large rocket at launch, or could be used advantageously in the working of hard-to-work materials such as the refractory metals. Langenecker and others3 have investigated the effect of high-amplitude vibrations on many metal-forming operations. The results have been quite favorable with usually a large decrease in the energy necessary for the forming operation. The processes, however, involve large frictional forces and it is not clear whether the decreases in forming forces are to be ascribed to decreased friction or to decreased flow stresses. The present paper reports an attempt to determine the effect of accurately known vibratory stresses on the static yield and flow stresses. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The standard multicomponent resonator technique for measuring internal friction has been adapted to allow simultaneous high-amplitude vibration, internal-friction measurement, and tensile deformation. This has been described in detail elsewhere.4 Longitudinal oscillations of approximately 50 kc frequency are excited in a multicomponent resonator by a quartz transducer. A second transducer measures the amplitude of vibrations. Fig. 1 shows a schematic drawing of the resonator and grip arrangement and the displacement pattern produced. Since the centers of the dummy bars are at displacement nodes, they represent points where attachments will not materially affect the vibrations. The force is applied by a standard Instron tester. The sample may be deformed while simultaneously vibrating at up to 104 strain amplitude. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The effect of high-amplitude vibrations on the yield and flow stresses of copper. aluminum, tantalum. a soft iron, and a stainless steel has been measured. In addition samples of tungsten vibrating at stress levels up to 10&apos; dynes per sq cm have been subjected to static stresses near the static yield stress with no indication of macroscopic deformation. Fig. 2 gives typical results for 99.999 pct polycrys-talline copper. A vibratory stress of 7 x 107 dynes per sq cm is applied at points "a" and removed at points "h". Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. ALLOY steels have become essential to industry in meeting the rigid requirements on materials imposed by our, advanced technology. In comparison with the total ingot capacity of the steel industry, the volume of alloy steels is relatively small although for many years annual alloy-ingot tonnage has, been in seven figures. However, the monetary value of the alloy-steel production is exceedingly high and the benefits derived from the products are relatively great. The trend in total ingot production since 1932 has been generally upward with only two major interruptions. That of the year 1938 was due to a decrease in general business activity whereas that of 1946 resulted largely from work stoppages. THE following presentation is more a summation of observations made and conclusions drawn over a period of three to four years than a report of experiments made with a definite objective. Tests were made, of course, to verify hypotheses, but the large mass of data was collected incidental to other work. Lack of space forbids the presentation of more than a few of those data. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that some of the most illustrative examples are not available. The work is admit¬tedly incomplete but is presented in the hope that it will stimulate further work along a similar line. The answers to many of the questions left unanswered by this paper will be found only after long and painstaking study, such as is scarcely possible in a commercial laboratory where problems of immediate importance consume most of the time. It is also hoped that this study will in some measure throw light on some of the dark spots of steelmaking, and help to clarify some of the annoyingly vague references to "good practice." Only cast steel was studied and the conclusions apply to cast steel, but it is the authors&apos; opinion that the quality of rolled or forged steel is largely dependent on the quality of the ingot, which is a casting. Although this discussion deals almost entirely with inclusions, it is important that the reader understand that only those natural inclusions which owe their origin to the solubility of certain materials in steel and to the chemical reactions of steelmaking are considered. Accidental inclusions, such as entrapped particles of slag, nozzle, runner, or mold are outside its province and are not considered. Such accidental inclusions are always dangerous and should be carefully avoided.

THE stock exchange and its functions is about as well understood by the average individual as the fourth dimension. What is a stock exchange? Divested of the rules and regulations by which it is governed, and the facilities it provides for the convenient handling of securities, it would be in its nude state nothing more or less than a meeting place for brokers. The stock exchange in America dates back to 1752, when a group of merchants of New York established a meeting place at the foot of Broad Street for the purpose of dealing in meal and slaves. The first definite orgarization, however, had its beginning in 1792 when 24 New York brokers signed an agreement not to buy or sell public stock for less than one quarter per cent. commission. From this small group has grown by gradual degrees, the greatest organized security market in the world, namely, the New York Stock Exchange. At the present time there are 27 stock exchanges in the United States and 5 in Canada. Based on the volume of business transacted, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange ranks 6th among them. This is attributable to the fact that strictly speaking Los Angeles has never been a stock exchange town, like some other large cities. Take for instance San Francisco, which supported one stock exchange from 1862 to .1882 and has since supported two. No city, by the way, should tolerate two stock exchanges at the same time. It is an economic folly and a senseless duplication that can be compared with rival telephone companies or competing street railway systems, paralleling each other&apos;s lines and always leads to trouble and confusion, and sooner or later one or the other falls by the wayside. While Los Angeles has had stock exchanges of one kind or another since 1896, none of them attracted much attention until 1899 when the present exchange was organized and it did not get well under way until along in 1906.
