The first indication of tungsten in the Bishop area was the discovery of scheelite concentrations in a gold placer operation in the ( since named) Tungsten Hills in 1913. After early intermittent production, the deposits of the district were slowly discovered and developed. The Pine Creek mine, located in 1916 and under the direction of Union Carbide Corporation since 1935, became the principal producer in the district. By the end of 1965, the total production of the district had reached 3,450,932 units of WO3, 17,071,242 pounds of molybdenum, and 19,599,110 pounds of copper. The topography of the district is characterized by its extreme relief, ranging in elevation from 13,986 feet to about 4400 feet in the Mount Tom quadrangle. The present topography is the result of the uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada and the great subsidence of the Owens Valley with its related deposition and volcanism. The general structure of the pre-Tertiary rocks consists of a series of tightly-folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock remnants surrounded by exposed plutons ranging in composition from hornblende gabbro to alaskite. The metasedimentary rocks consist of low- to intermediate-grade metamorphic equivalents of fine-grained sediments deposited during the Paleozoic era in a miogeosynclinal environment. Later volcanics were deposited in a eugeosyncline. The ore bodies in the Bishop district consist of scheelite-bearing tactite formed by the pyrometasomatic replacement* of calcareous sediments along the contact with an acidic granitic intrusive. A number of the metasedimentary remnants have had tungsten deposited along their edges.

"The Red Dog Mine has increased mill throughput for most years since startup. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Late in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifylng the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, twentyone (21) Outokumpu OK50 mechanical flotation cells and four (4) 3.66m dia. column cells will be added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment and power issues and has a total budget of $US105 M. Startup of equipment will be phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and is expected to be complete by the end of Q3-2001.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the arctic circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred (100) days of open seas. Typical of sedimentary exhalative deposits, the metallurgy proved to be challenging and coupled with many mechanical shortcomings, the initial few years were very difficult. The start-up issues were slowly resolved and in 1998, a major grinding expansion, the PRI (Production Rate Increase) project, was completed. The project was designed to allow a 40% increase over the 1995 throughput. In 2000 mill throughput was 3,050,000 tonnes to produce a total of 960,000 and 140,000 dry tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates respectively, making Red Dog the largest zinc concentrate producer in the world. To address a shortage of flotation capacity remaining from the PRI grinding expansion, a project designated as the VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project was initiated. The mill optimization project is targeted to produce 1,100,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate at 56% zinc grade and 87% zinc recovery. The project will add twenty-one (21) Outokumpu OK50 (50m3) flotation cells, four (4) 3.66mO column cells and address water treatment, thickening and power generation capacities."

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines collected and analyzed overcore measurements and other indicators of in situ stress characteristics at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. An analysis of these data revealed that significant local variations in in situ stress are present in this mine and that these variations existed prior to mining. High stresses were found to be associated with the most competent strata and a locked section of a fault. An estimate of the predominant stress field was developed for mine-wide modeling. The estimate shows that the greatest principal stress was oriented north of northwest. This information should provide a basis for mine-wide structural modeling of the Lucky Friday Mine and should generate important insights into localized stress conditions, which may significantly affect both local and mine-to-mine variations in seismicity induced by excavation.

Laboratory column leach tests are used routinely to evaluate gold and silver ores for heap leaching. The tests are fairly straightforward. The ore to be tested is placed into an appropriately sized leach column. Then an alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the ore and the effluent solutions are collected. The effluent solutions are then put through a column of activated carbon to recover the gold and silver in solution. Zinc precipitation may also be used for silver ores or if the ore contains a significant amount of soluble silver in addition to gold. The length of the leach time in the tests is mainly a function of how quickly the precious metals are recovered from the ore. At the completion of the tests, the tailings are assayed and the recoveries determined from the calculated head grades. The amount of ore to be used for a test is partly a function of its crushed size. The coarser the size, the larger the sample size for the column. A typical small-scale laboratory column test on ore crushed to -12 mm (-0.5 in.) would usually be conducted in a 100- to 150-mm-diam (4- to 6-in.-diam) column 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 20 to 45 kg (44 to 99 lb) of ore. A comparable test on the same ore crushed to 50 mm (2 in.) would be conducted in a 200- to 300-mm-diam (8- to 12-in.-diam) col¬umn 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 80 to 200 kg (176 to 441 lb) of ore. The evident need to improve the reliability of fluid power systems in underground coal mining equipment prompted the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and later the Department of Energy, to contract with the Fluid Power Research Center at Oklahoma State University for a research project to develop methods for achieving this end. Since the work of the contract was completed at about the time DOE was relinquishing its underground coal mining projects to BOM it was decided to issue the final report under 80M cover. The contract revealed that the major causes of poor reliability were: (1) poor overall system design, (2) poor component contamination toleranace, (3) poor system filtration, and 4) poor maintenance practices stemming from a lack of defined maintenance procedures and enforcement of same. This report demonstrates the variability of the reliabilities of components of similar performance description when subjected to standard tests. Improved design procedures are recommended and the information needed to specify and select components whose reliability is predictable and optimum without sacrifice in performance or significant increase in envelope size.

The value of processed materials of mineral origin was estimated to have exceeded $297 billion in 1991. U.S. raw non fuel minerals production in 1991 was estimated at $30.8 billion, a 5.8% decline from that in 1990. This estimate was based on data for the first quarter of 1991 (in some cases two quarters) for most of the 21 minerals that for many years have accounted for more than 95% of the industry's production value. The value of minerals production has increased in all but 4 of the last 30 years. The metals component of production value has fluctuated much more than the industrial minerals component, reflecting the greater volatility of metal prices. Employment in metal mining rose slightly in 1991, but this gain was more than offset by a decline in employment in industrial mineral mining, resulting in an overall decline of 3.0% to 164,600 workers in 1991. Prices of several major metals declined during 1991, reflecting weakness in the economy, causing some metal mines to shut down or reduce operations.

In the spring of 2010 double refractory ores from historical stockpiles were processed through Barrick's Goldstrike pressure oxidation facility, thereby providing preg robbing feeds for a variety of metallurgical testwork. This paper describes the effects of amount, type, place and time of addition of activated carbons on CIL gold recovery and shows that native carbon in plant PDX'ed discharge solids can still preg rob gold loaded activated carbon.

The name diatomaceous earth, therefore, is to be preferred to others such as trade names, inappropriate terms, or names correctly applied to some other product. The following names should, therefore, not be used for diatomaceous earth,-- kieselguhr, infusorial earth, diatomite, celite, moler, bergnehl, English rottenstone, tripoli, tripolite, fossil earth, desmid earth, white peat, tellurine, randanite, ceyssatite, or any trade name.FORMATIONDiatoms live in practically all kinds of water, fresh or salt, hot or cold, still or running and under different conditions of depth and pressure. These minute plants assimilate inorganic salts from their environment and produce skeletons of silica much as mollusks secrete lime and form their Shalls. When the diatoms die they settle to the bottom together with anything else which may be present, such as sand, clay or volcanic ash. The organic matter gradually disappears leaving the silicious skeletons of the diatoms which, with impurities, make up the deposits of diatomaceous earth. These deposits which are still being foamed at the present time and which were produced throughout very different epochs, were more prolifically formed in the Tertiary, so that the thickest beds so far discovered are of that Age."

Reports for the calendar year 1923 that have been transmitted to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior by mine officials of the various coal-producing States show that accidents in and around the coal mines resulted in the death of 2,452 men. The output of coal during the year, as reported to the United States Geo- logical Survey, was 641,476,000 tons; hence the fatality rate per million tons was 3.82 as compared with 4.15 for 1922, a decline of about 8 per cent. The average rate for the decade ending with 1922 was 4.11. This reduction of 8 per cent in the fatal-accident rate per million tons is equivalent to the saving of 210 lives--that is, had the fatality rate of 1922 continued through 1923 the number of lives lost would have been 210 more than they actually were. Not only was there a net reduction in the fatality rate from all causes combined, but each of the main causes of coal-mine fatalities also showed a decline. Falls of roof and coal, which generally account for nearly half of all deaths in coal mines, were responsible for 1,158 fatalities in 1923, which represents a rate of 1.81 per million tons as compared with 1.90 in 1922. (See Table 2.) Haulage accidents underground usually cause about 17 per cent of all fatalities, and the reports for 1923 show that 413 deaths were due to this cause, indi- cating a rate of 0.64 per million tons, as against 0.71 for the previous year. Gas and dust explosions killed 372 men, the fatality rate being 0.58; the rate for 1922 was 0.65. Seventy-five deaths were due to electricity, for which class of accidents the fatality rate per million tons was 0.12 as compared with 0.16 the year before. Powder and other explosives caused 114 deaths, representing a rate of 0.18 as compared with 0.19 for 1922. Of the 2,452 fatal accidents during the year, 2,249 occurred under- ground, 46 in shafts, and 157 on the surface. A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

In 1911 the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines instructed the chief mining engineer of the bureau , during an investigation of coal-mine safety conditions in Europe, to ask the directors of the various mine-experiment stations whether they would favor a European conference . The majority of the officials in immediate charge of experiment stations favored the plan , and Victor Watteyne, inspector general of Belgium, suggested that the United States call such a conference to be held immediately after the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry, which was to assemble in New York on September 3, 1912 . Accordingly, invitations were issued by the United States Government to those countries having mine-experiment stations , namely, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, Germany , and Great Britain, and to those that contemplated the establishment of such stations , Canada and Mexico . All but Great Britain and Canada accepted ; Mexico designated a representative , who later found it impossible to come. The Government of Great Britain in declining, expressed regret at its inability to accept ; an informal statement was made that the opening of the experimental gallery at Eskmeals , England , occupied the attention of the officials in charge . Delegates were appointed by their respective Governments as follows: Austria-Hungary, Julian Czaplinski , royal mining engineer. Belgium, Victor Watteyne , inspector general of mines . France, J. Taffanel, director of the Lievin experiment station . Germany, Carl Beyling, bergassessor, director of Dortmund experiment station. United States , Charles E. Munroe, consulting explosives expert and George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines . Subsequently Mr. William O'Connor , a mining engineer and mine operator of Wales , who opportunely appeared at the Pittsburgh station with letters of introduction from the South Wales Institute of Engineers and from prominent mining officials of Great Britain , was unanimously invited to take part in the meeting as an unofficial representative of Great Britain . Messrs . Beyling, Taffanel , and Watteyne were met in New York on September 3, by George S. Rice, who accompanied them to Washington, where they were welcomed by Director J. A. Holmes , of the Bureau of Mines , and where , with the delegates to the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry , they were presented to President Taft . Mr. Taffanel was unfortunately called back to France just before the scheduled time of the conference on account of a mine disaster ; the other delegates , including Mr. Czaplinski , convened at Pittsburgh on the morning of September 14. Mr. Rice, representing the Director of the Bureau of Mines , acted as temporary chairman , and called the meeting to order.

Seventy-three of the 90 naturally occurring elements that are found in the earth's crust are metals or metalloids. The quantities of metals used annually in the United States range from about 100 million metric tons (steel) to a few kilograms (osmium). The recovery of metals from discarded products or industrial process wastes, especially those metals that are used in large quantity, are very expensive, or are unusually toxic, is important to the national economy and to the natural environment. From its inception in 1910, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been the Government's prime source of information on metals recycling, as well as a major innovator in recycling technology. Statistical data on scrap generation and processing have been summarized annually for many years in the USBM's Minerals Yearbook. Most of the data for individual metals discussed in this report were extracted from that publication.

It is a far cry from the small and uncertain mining efforts of 50 years ago to the splendidly equipped and solidly financed organiza- tions that now handle thousands of tons of ore per day. The old mining was largely speculative; the new is practically on a manu- facturing basis. In the old days of mining the aim was, chiefly, to find comparatively rich ore; modern practice looks more toward efficiency in mining and milling, so that vast tonnages of low-grade material may be worked at a profit. The old operators had faith and hoped for good returns; the new ascertain with a fair degree of precision what the available tonnage is, what the cost of mining and treating the ore will be, the time necessary to exhaust the deposit, the capital required, and the net profits to be made. The old mining was financed on a highly speculative basis, and the value of mining stock was largely controlled by the imaginations of the promoters and of the individual holders. In the new régime the financing of mines is often as conservative as the financing of manufactures or railroads, and the value of stock, quoted on the leading exchanges, is controlled by the carefully estimated profits in sight. Of course, with every legitimate industrial enterprise go certain business risks, and mining is not exempted from these. Then, too, valueless mining as well as valueless industrial stocks are sometimes offered for sale by the intentionally dishonest, or the ignorant. However, the prospective purchaser of a mine nowadays, if he is willing to pay for the services of reputable mining engineers, can obtain information on which to base an opinion as to the quality of his investment. The relatively recent development of cheap and efficient methods of mining and of ore dressing has given value to low-grade ore bodies that a few years ago were almost valueless. The iron mines of northern Minnesota have been fruitful in developing efficiency in mining methods, notably the open-cut methods in which steam shovels strip off the overburden and then load the ore directly into railroad trains for transport to the furnace. In 1907 open-cut mining was applied to the low-grade copper ores of Bingham, Utah, with splendid results, and since then it has won a most important place in the min- ing of large masses of low-grade ores in several other mining regions, especially at Santa Rita, N. Mex.

A joint federal-provincial approach in gathering basic information from industry on mine production, concentrator operations and ore reserves, initiated during 1978, is a major step toward the goal of achieving better government-industry communication through a common data base. Information from questionnaires sent out by provincial governments is shared with the federal government; correct interpretation is ensured by mine visits conducted jointly by provincial and federal representatives. Initial focus is on nonferrous metal mines. The federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) is responsible for a national analysis that is aimed at the early detection of worrisome developments-and their reasons-in the flow from resources to reserves and from reserves to supply of these metals. The heart of the national analysis is the annual construction of a "monitoring curve", showing each metal's aggregated mine production as it would decrease over time if no new reserves and production capacity were to be added from the year of analysis. For a given metal, a comparison of monitoring curves from year to year can reveal early signs of supply stagnation. In anyone year, a monitoring curve in conjunction with foreseen needs for Canadian mine output will show the production gap that would have to be filled from reserves and production capacity yet to be developed. The production gaps for copper, nickel, zinc and lead, the four leading base metals mined in Canada, are shown for the 20-year period ahead, in the context of production achieved during the past 20 years. It is shown that reserve levels commensurate with likely future production levels would require that average annual reserve additions during 1978-98 exceed the average annual additions during the preceding 20 years. Reserve levels of all four metals have declined in recent years. A review of significant discoveries in the last five years suggests that this fall in reserves is not the result of a lack of exploration successes, but of stagnation in development for various economic reasons.

This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.
