Tracer blasting is commonly used in Canadian underground mines for overbreak control. It involves tracing a column of ANFO with a low strength detonating cord. In order to investigate the effectiveness of tracer blasting in perimeter control and to understand its mechanism, a field experimentation was conducted which involved drifting, benching and pipe tests.

The Amax Coal Company's Ayrshire Mine in Southern Indiana is faced with one of the toughest blasting applications concerning vibration in the nation. As a means of maintaining regulatory compliance the operation elected to exercise the option of frequency analysis. A site-specific computer processing program which suggests ideal delay interval ranges for the lowest vibration was utilized.

It is generally expected that drilling and blasting be a routine part of a mining process where the blastholes are drilled, left for a period of time and then primed, loaded with explosive, stemmed and then detonated via an appropriate surface initiation system. In past years, the usual justification for underground mining of limestone has been the depth of the overburden, perhaps 100 feet thick or more. At our Okolona Quarry in suburban Louisville, Kentucky, the overburden is usually shallow -- it averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness. However, in July 1980, we began development of an underground limestone mine on that property which also includes surface mining operations.

Wadi Limestone Quarry is one of the largest captive mines of Associated Cement Companies Ltd, India. The mine management wanted to extend the excavation as close to the plant as possible for maximum exploitation of the deposit. The use of crater studies to evaluate explosive performance is a well-established practice in the Blasting Industry. Normally, this work utilizes larger charge sizes (>75mm) in order to minimize the influence of geological factors adjacent to the borehole. This can impose unwanted restrictions in the experimental factors accessible to investigation. Thus, for example, systematic studies of non-ideal performance in a somewhat practical setting is rendered quite difficult.

The Mongol-Russian Joint Mining and Processing Cu-Mo Corporation Erdenet signed a contract with BGRIMM for building a plant to produce 10,000 t/y multitype emulsion explosives by using BGRIMM emulsion explosives manufacturing technology. This paper discusses problems encountered when blasting under rivers for pipeline crossings. Many pipelines have recently been laid under the Danube River. Great care had to be taken to determine limits of detonation impulses from blasting operations in order that no damage would occur to structures at the water's edge, boats, and swimmers. Equations were derived from the results of this study which enable prediction of impulse levels.

The Pacific Northwest has an abundance of seamy, coarse granite and basalt rock. It is used primarily for road construction. Small quarries are opened nearest the road work to cut the cost of hauling. The crushers are portable. Small diameter holes 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" are placed close together to insure proper fragmentation. It is not unusual to load and shoot 100 to 700 holes 40' deep.

There are four large limestone quarries, located nearby Cairo metropolitan. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract limestone for the cement industries. In these quarries, the blast vibration should be kept below a certain limit. One of these quarries is Tourah Portland Cement Company (TPCC) limestone quarry which, lies near important and historical large caves, within Tourah Mountain. Therefore, control of blast vibration level becomes very critical.

Sinkhole development in karst terrains is a serious problem and risk to facilities built in these areas. The potential for sinkholes are a function of many things including the chemistry of the underlying rock, the location of water conductive fractures and fissures in the rock, the natural fluctuation of the ground water table, vibrations from various sources and surface regrading activities. When sinkhole open near quarry operations the occurrence of these features is occasionally attributed to vibrations from quarry blasting. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the development of sinkholes as a result of quarry blasting. In general, it has been found that sinkholes result from collapse or piping of overburden soils into cavities or caverns developed within underlying carbonate rocks that have been in existence for many thousands of years. The overburden soils in karst areas are typically clayey and as a result are not subject to densification or liquefaction as a result of vibrations. The primary cause of an increased rate of sinkhole development can be attributed to changes in the ground water table or local surface water drainage. These changes may be caused by seasonal fluctuations, ground water level lowering in drought periods, dewatering of excavations or quarries, or local changes in surface drainage resulting from grading activities.
