Cement production in Australia approximates 6.5 million tonnes per year. Cement clinker is sourced from 15 plants which operate 28 kilns. Cement grinding is conducted at 14 of the clinker plants plus 7 grinding plants. Average annual capacity per kiln or plant is lower than in many overseas countries, but kilns introduced since 1970's have been of larger size more in keeping with size trends overseas, although still smaller than the large units overseas. Substantial economies in capital and labour costs can be achieved in large production units, particularly with dry process kilns using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. Precalcination techniques have been introduced to the Australian cement industry but as cement transport costs form a major part of supplying diverse market areas, the size of kilns is likely to remain less than maximum owing to balance with distribution costs. The cement industry uses significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy which can be minimised by proper selection of equipment and technology. Labour costs are also significant and can be contained by automation and computer control of the process.

At Appin colliery, geological structural analyses and investigations of roof conditions suggest roof failure may be attributed to vectorial stresses acting on underground openings, and inducing movement along inherent discontinuities in the surrounding rocks. Certain complex joint and fracture patterns tend to exhibit the effect of this movement resulting often in local deterioration in natural support.The following conclusions are drawn.1. Roof failure is related to the inherent nature of the roof rocks, the presence of mechanical discontinuities, and the vectorial stresses imposed upon it.2. Roof failure is not necessarily related to the statistically most prominent jointing.3. Colliery development approximately parallel to the direction of the statistically most prominent jointing sometimes results in favourable roof conditions.4. The maximum principal stress is the resultant of those vectorial stresses acting upon a mine opening and may be inferred from roof adjustments to those stresses after mining.5. Statistical analyses of jointing in the mine workings can provide clues to the tectonic force or forces which have been regionally or locally influential.6. There is a probable relationship between mining induced fracturing, jointing, and micro-fractures in quartz grains, within the sediments of the mine roof.

A drive, 3,500 ft long, was planned to explore mineralization exposed by diamond drilling. A rate of advance of 150 ft per fortnight, approximately double previous Broken Hill rates, was required. Subsequent to the completion of this drive its extension for a further 6,200 ft was planned to provide a main haulage way along which ore could be transported from a newly acquired lease back to the main hoisting shaft, a total distance of 13,500 ft.This paper describes the working conditions, relationships, manning and costs, and gives details of the cycle and equipment used to achieve rates up to 170 ft per fortnight.OBJECTIVEDiamond drilling from the 1,000 ft level at the Delprat Shaft section had indicated that the zone of mineralization, about 150 ft wide, which had been explored on the 1,000 ft level for a length of 2,600 ft, continued downwards with a westerly dip. The drilling results showed that within this wide zone there were arrower lenses of mineralization of possibly payable grade (see composite plan, Fig. 1).Diamond drill holes of 2,000 ft and over, particularly through heavily sheared areas of sericite schist, had been found to be costly, slow, and inadequate in testing the potential and trends of these smaller concentrations of mineralization.It was therefore decided that an exploratory drive should be advanced from the northern limit of the 1,480 ft level into the western mineralization, and that from this drive diamond drill holes should be drilled at dose intervals to outline the ore.The 1,480 ft level was chosen for the following reasons.1. It had the greatest northerly reach of the accessible levels at No. 7 Shaft section below the 1,000 ft horizon and therefore would enable the test to be made most quickly.

The interaction of, flotation collectors with sulphide mmerals takes place at the solid-solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen.The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. The investigation has now been extended to the other principal orebodies of the area.The earlier study showed that the host rocks of the two adjacent Black Star orebodies were constitutionally closely related, and suggested that this was probably due to their original formation in contiguous zones of sedimentation. On this basis the silica-dolomite of the copper ore appeared to represent the slightly more shoreward, "limey" member, probably a fairly massive algal calcareous sediment laid...

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

Recent advances in X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology have made it possible to conduct powder XRD measurements on samples at high temperatures during reaction. State-of-the-art detectors are now capable of rapidly acquiring diffraction patterns across a wide angular range (typically 120"20) enabling phase transformation rates to be measured directly during sample reaction. In this study, the phase transformations during the reduction of hematite to metallic iron by five per cent hydro ºen in nitrogen gas mixtures, were measured in situ between 500 - 700 C. Complete X-ray diffraction patterns were acquired within 15 seconds every one minute, enabling direct measurement of the transient phase abundances during the reaction. The data were quantitatively analysed by the Rietveld method to yield the abundances of hematite, magnetite, wustite and metallic iron, as functions of time during the reduction process. A first-order reactions-in-series model was proposed, and the reaction rate constants and activation energy were determined from the time-dependent phase abundance data.

During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. There are three distinct veins on this property - parallel, persistent, and dipping at an angle varying between 40° - 50° to the horizontal.The country rock is very sound, and timber, save for the small amount required for ore chutes, is entirely absent from all mine workings.The lode varies from a width of 1 in. to 8 in., but the stopes are carried forward with a minimurn width of about 30 in.The mine is particularly dry for a West Coast property, and conditions underground are very favourable. The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

Both machines have enhanced the production capabilities and quality control of the Roscommon comminuition circuit and they will provide efficient and reliable crushing well into the next century.

Field portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and near infrared (NIR) instruments are proven technologies in the minerals industry. The in-field results of these instruments can add value early in the project life, leading to cost-effective decision-making compared to their equivalent laboratory based techniques. However, in order to add value to a project, it is crucial that the instruments are employed correctly.Orientation studies should be carried out prior to initiating a sampling program to achieve the highest level of quality assurance and control for the results. Hence, an appropriate sampling workflow begins with considering what outcomes are required, including level of precision, accuracy, reliability for elements and minerals of interest, and sampling errors. The workflows proposed include soil sampling and reverse circulation and diamond drilling sampling techniques, and laboratory based techniques. They are practical and flexible workflows using available portable XRF and NIR technologies that can be applied to current sampling and drilling methods.The combined technologies have the ability to create large, integrated geochemical and mineralogical data sets that can provide cost savings for every stage of the mining chain from exploration to prefeasibility, mineral processing and environmental remediation.CITATION:Jansen, N H and Bridgwater, H L, 2017. Properties of coal which are significant in relation to preparation for carbonization and conversion are reviewed, and existing coal preparation technology which has been used for production of cleaned coal of suitable ash content and petrographic composition for carbonisation, pyrolysis, hydrogenation and similar processes is described. Possibilities for application of this technology to some Australian coal seams is examined briefly. It is concluded that further survey work is required related to the optimization of selective crushing and concentrating operations, with the aim of maximizing production of quality products for carbonisation, etc mainly from Australian seams with only moderate coking characteristics.

Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. Recent literature is reviewed with emphasis on the design and scale up of mixers. Most important aspects of mixing have resulted from the study of Newtonian fluids and only a minor attempt has been made to extend the work to non-Newtonian materials.The rheology of non-Newtonian materials is outlined and the typical behaviour of mineral slurries is indicated.The importance of flow velocity, flow pattern, and fluid turbulence is discussed with relation to suspension of solids and rate of reaction.Data on experimental leaching of ore from Mary Kathleen, Queensland, show the effect of different mixing impellers.In conclusion, factors involved in the selection of a mixer are presented with emphasis on economic appraisal after pilot experimentation.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of mixing has attracted considerable attention during recent years, but relatively little work has been undertaken for the study of non-Newtonian materials. Most work has been restricted to Newtonian fluids because there are less inconsistencies in such study.Mixing, by definition, implies blending or combining, and ranges from gentle mixing which blends the contents of a large tank in 24 hours to violent mixing which completely homogenises the contents of a tank within seconds. Metzner and Otto (1957) have pointed out the present lack of knowledge on the degree (or quality) of mixing. Apart from this fact the design of mixers for Newtonian materials would seem to be reasonably certain.Both capital and operating costs rise rapidly with increasing mixer size. Therefore the design, or selection, of a mixer is a matter for economic consideration in the overall aspect of plant design and operation.

ALTHOUGH it has been a matter of about one hundred years since the idea of the internal-combustion engine entered the mind of the inventor, the practical application of its use was not attained till 1860, when Lenoir produced an engine similar to the ordinary highpressure steam engine, with the valves arranged to admit the explosive mixture and the discharge of the exhaust gases. In this case no attempt was made to compress the gas before ignition, as it was then considered that the explosion under these conditions had a detrimental effect, inasmuch as it would act as a sudden blow to the working parts. Indeed, he went so far as to inject steam and water sprays to reduce the explosion.Under these conditions the consumption of gas was exceedingly high-about 106 cub. ft. of coal gas per b.h.p. per hour but the mechanical effect showed that the engine ran in every respect as smoothly and quietly as in best steam-engine practice.The extravagant consumption of this engine was clearly pointed out at the time by Gustav Schmidt in a paper before the German Society of Engineers, wherein he states :-" The results would be far more favourable if compression pumps, worked from the engine, compressed the cold air and cold gas to three atmospheres before entrance into the cylinder. By this means a greater expansion and transformation of heat is possible."
