Geostatistics - a tool used by geologists and mine planning engineers to estimate grades and rapidly evaluate alternative mining strategies has reached an advanced stage of development for the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at Isa and Hilton Mines. Geostatistics has been used for over a decade in the massive copper orebodies but the stratiform lead-zinc orebodies are much more complex and provided a completely different set of challenges. Recent increases in computer processing speed and power provided by the Integrated Mine Planning System (IMPS) has aided the development of the geostatistics package. Also the formation of a project team and the subsequent in-house development which has drawn together the expertise of geologists, engineers and system analysts has contributed significantly to the success of the project.The most important feature of any approach to modelling the lead-zinc orebodies is that the kriging search must consider estimate and sample points according to their positions relative to bedding surfaces. By transforming co-ordinates as perpendicular offsets from a plane representing the local strike and dip, it is possible to elongate the ellipsoidal influence to parallel bedding. By interactively modelling surfaces using CAD facilities and then specifying these surfaces as 'hard' or 'soft' boundaries, the geologist has complete control over the kriging process.

The JORC Code does not specify a definition for ælevel of confidenceÆ. The common approach in the mining industry is to use a certain drill spacing or number of data samples to classify resources by the confidence categories. Another approach includes application of the quantitative geostatistical criteria for non-subjective and consistent definition of the resource categories. This approach, which has become increasingly popular in the mining industry, provides a quantitative measure of the resource estimation uncertainty. In this study, uncertainties associated with the different drilling grids at the Weipa bauxite deposit (Queensland, Australia) have been modelled using conditional simulation methodology. Criteria used at Weipa for defining resource categories are as follows: mineralisation can be classified as a Measured Resource if tonnage and grade of its volume representing three months of production can be estimated with a precision error not exceeding ¦10 per cent (at 95 per cent probability, ie two standard deviations); and mineralisation can be classified as an Indicated Resource if grade and tonnage of its volume representing annual production can be estimated with a precision error not exceeding ¦10 per cent (at 95 per cent probability). Several different grids have been created by subsampling the drill hole database. The studied variables include Al2O3, SiO2, thickness of the bauxite seam and location of the footwall contact. The variables have been modelled by sequential Gaussian simulation. Based on this study the following drill spacings have been recommended: Measured Resources û 150 m by 150 m, Indicated Resources û 300 m by 300 m.

Ulan Coal Mines Limited operates an underground and open cut mine near Mudgee in the Central West of NSW. The mines are part of a Joint Venture managed by Exxon Coal and Minerals Australia Limited (ECMAL). Currently all the mines output of over five million tonnes per annum is sold into the export market predominantly as a steaming product.

Computers and other microprocessor technology lead the world of technological change. Nevertheless, the real advances in the world at large are not necessarily in the computer industry, but in the industries whose economics benefit most by the advances that this computer revolution makes possible. The minerals industry has always been in the forefront of this advance. Technological change in the era preceding the industrial revolution, and the mining industry's part in it, provides an instructive lesson for what is happening today. Strong parallels can be drawn for predicting future advances. With each technological advance allowing more efficient production comes a re-alignment of economics - absolute and relative changes to prices, to quantities demanded, and to other market characteristics. This re-alignment applies not only to the mineral industry, but also to the world at large. Adaptability, rather than technical advancement per se is the key to survival and growth in a changing world. 'Adaptability' as a concept is easy to support. As an operational philosophy it is not so easy to implement. As a goal for planning, it is much harder to quantify. A fixed scenario of a future world may provide helpful guidelines, but a scenario that demands adaptability to an uncertain future world is much less definite. Of course, everyone else in the world is also uncertain about the future, and they are making their plans using different assumptions. This virtually guarantees that our future will turn out different to our expectations. This is in part what Hayek (1945) calls the 'knowledge' problem. Until now, most of the planning and technical research undertaken in the world has ignored this problem. This ignorance is a luxury that we can no longer afford. The paper looks at the history of technological change and highlights the characteristics of successful technological revolutions. 'Adaptability' to unforeseen circumstances is the key to success in this environment. The paper examines the knowledge problem from the perspective of the mineral industry, and suggests a number of directions for maximising the returns from application of computer technology in this important area.

Artificial support can be used to improve wall stability in open pit mines. This is examined for a particular case where the factor of safety for a slope is kept constant by using artificial support as the slope angle is increased. It is demonstrated that the savings in excavation generally exceed the cost of support. However, in order to correctly judge the eco- nomic impact of artificial support on the project, all the elements relat- ing to the use of artificial support must be taken in account.

Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

The operation of quarries for the production of crushed stone and aggregates, depends heavily on rock blasting efficiency, which usually represents a major share of total production costs. After investigating the causes of this situation, a series of technical aspects have been detected, and they are described for the purpose of contributing to the minimization of costs, which also reduces the effects of blasting on the environment. Utilization of empirical design methods, of inadequate explosive types, and of erroneous drilling pauems with respect to rock properties, are the main factors to be corrected, as a consequence of poor engineering criteria, with scarce use of computational methods and field instrumentation. Several concepts of blasting optimization are pointed out, and their application to industrial operations in a Portuguese limestone quarry indicated clear trends for the reduction of production costs, as well as some of the deleterious consequences of blasting on the environment.

The technology applied by lonex Pty Ltd provides an important breakthrough in geochemical exploration, enabling the discovery of concealed mineral deposits to great depths below surface. Most mineral discoveries have been made in areas of outcrop or relatively shallow cover; deposits at greater depth have been beyond the range of conventional geophysical and geochemical methods. Quite apart from the need to explore to greater depths in regions of major current or past production, most continents have vast areas where prospective host rocks are concealed by more recent material. There are numerous case studies where Ionex methods have located deeply-buried metal deposits, up to 500 m below surface, beneath thick younger sedimentary, volcanic, or transported cover. Research leading to the development of this technology was initiated by Dr I S Goldberg at the Rudgeofizika Institute in St Petersburg (CIS), and the methods have been employed there - and in other countries - for many years. Ionex technology became available in Australia in 1993. It comprises: ò geochemical and geoelectrochemical sampling and ultra-high-sensitivity analysis for mobile and weakly-bonded elements (I S Goldberg); ò the delineation and interpretation of regional zones of enrichment and depletion of the prime elements within geoelectrochemical systems (GES) (I S Goldberg); ò the investigation and interpretation of the three-dimensional geochemical zoning within geochemical anomalies (G J Abramson); and ò multi-variate computer modelling of the geochemical fields and systems (V L Los). lonex technology has been adapted to the environmental conditions in Australia with the participation of C 0 Haslam.

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. Further coke trials with southern or bentonite will be carried out when ore quality has been improved by the introduction of ore sintering at Newcastle.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period of operation of the Newcastle coke ovens and blast furnaces from April 1960 (when No. 3 blast furnace was blown in after rebuilding) to December 1960, a bentonite coke trial was carried out based on earlier research findings (Gregory, 1959a, 1959b; Felton and Gregory, 1960; Gregory, 1960) that as little as 0 3 per cent to 05 per cent bentonite clay added to northern N.S.W. high volatile coking coals gave a significant increase in coke strength. This paper outlines the rationale for the location of the crusher, geotechnical analysis and basis of ground support design, design and scheduling of the chamber and supporting excavations as well as the operational outcomes and lessons learned. Contributions from mining operations, planning, geotechnical and infrastructure teams enabled the Crusher Station One excavation to be completed on schedule, with opportunities taken for underground mining and infrastructure to work safely in parallel to deliver crusher station infrastructure on schedule. Installation of crusher infrastructure was ongoing at the time of writing.

It is the aim of this paper to review recent research in understanding the role of cyanide in the elution of gold. Under conditions of severe pre-treatment (high temperatures and levels of cyanide), the dynamics of elution are determined mainly by the adsorption equilibrium and the flow conditions in the column. When conditions are less favourable for desorption, transport phenomena are rate controlling. The most important sub-processes of elution are the changes in cyanide, potassium and gold concentrations, as well as the change in passivation of the carbon surface. Mathematical models to simulate the various sub-processes are described briefly.The presence of an irreversibly adsorbed species such as AuCN on the carbon is determined mainly by the pH, temperature and the type of carbon. Cyanide in the pre-treatment step will convert the AuCN to reversibly adsorbed Au(CN)2. Competition between cyanide and Au(CN)z for adsorption sites will enhance the elution of gold, but plays a minor role at elevated temperatures. The most important effect of cyanide is its reaction with the functional groups on the carbon to passivate the surface for the adsorption of anionic metal cyanides and thereby promote the elution of gold. This passivation, caused by the degradation of cyanide, is strongly temperature dependent. Free cyanide in the elution step of an AARL elution is of lesser importance than the cyanide in the pre-treatment step. Elution without cyanide is possible only after cold acid washing, and has been proven on plant scale.

The recovery of phosphate minerals from the Mt Weld deposit by froth flotation has been studied by many researchers. Most of the flotation experiments were carried out with a tall oil fatty acid as collector and sodium silicate as dispersant and gangue depressant at pH about 10. Several rougher stages and cleaner stages and, sometimes, a desliming stage were included. The major difficulty was to reduce the Fe2O3 impurities in the concentrate to the required level. We used QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscopy) to provide a comprehensive and accurate mineralogical analysis of the flotation products. The analysis indicated that the Fe2O3 impurities were mainly recovered in the second concentrate, owing partly to the incomplete depression of the liberated iron oxides by the sodium silicate and partly to composite particles containing iron oxides. The selective depressing action of sodium silicate was improved by adjusting the variables such as the modulus (SiO2/Na2O), pH and time of standing of the stock sodium silicate solutions or by adding some polyvalent metal salts into sodium silicate solution. The flotation process was optimised to produce a phosphate concentrate with the required grade and recovery (38.6 per cent P2O5, 2.67 per cent Fe2O3, 13.7 for P2O5/(Fe2O3 + A1203), at P2O5 recovery of 81.5 per cent). The possibility of recovering the rare-earth phosphate, monazite, from the Mt Weld deposit by flotation was also studied.

FOR some years past it has been usual to specify high-grade copper for use for many purposes, but the practice of specifying zinc of a high degree of purity for certain purposes is of comparatively recent origin. It is a practice, however, which is extending ag the effect of the impurities in zinc on products manufactured therefrom becomes widely recognized.The notes hereunder are intended to briefly survey the principal uses to which high-gr.ade zinc is being put, and, wherever possible, to indicate the effect of the impurities normally present in the lower grades of zinc.In the United States zinc is graded into five divisions, known respectively as "High-grade" "Intermediate" "Brass Special" "Selected," and "Prime Western." The maximum amounts of impurities allowed in the various grades are indicated in Table I,which is compiled from data published by the American Society of Testing Materials:In addition, it is specified in an cases that the slabs shall be reasonably free from surface corrosion or adhering foreign matter. The relative contents of Au in a series of groundwaters from water bores and exploration drillholes, located near Au mineralisation at Stawell, Ararat, Clunes and Ballarat in central Victoria, were found to be clear indicators of relative proximity to mineralisation in each region. In the same series, waters with anomalous concentrations of As distinguished Au mineralisation in bedrock from secondary palaeochannel or deep lead Au. In some groundwaters, acid pH values, high sulphate relative to other anions and detectable concentrations of reduced Fe reflected sulphide minerals associated with bedrock Au deposits. Close to some ore zones, locally anomalous groundwater concentrations of Mn reflected the Fe carbonates that accompany Au in these zones. In addition, elevated concentrations of other elements provided geochemical signatures for the aquifer lithologies associated with Au mineralisation. Of the lithological indicators Co and Ni, U and F, Rb and Cs, Mo and Li respectively reflected the mafic, felsic, potassic rich and quartz zones, principally in the Stawell mine area and to a lesser extent those at Clunes and Ballarat. Mineral stability diagrams, based on groundwater activities of K', Mgt and H`, demonstrated that a series of ore-zone groundwaters follow a trend that conforms with a biotite to sericite to kaolinite alteration sequence in aquifer mineralogy. This is a good illustration of how present day groundwaters under surface conditions can reflect the underlying mineral sequences that accompany these Au deposits. These observations around mine areas suggested that groundwater chemistry could provide a rapid and cost effective method of assessing prospectivity for An of extensive areas in central Victoria. To test this, regional sampling and analysis of 355 bore waters was carried out in a region where potential An bearing rocks are covered by Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments and volcanics. Contoured elemental abundances and distribution from this program indicated five zones in which groundwaters had elevated Au and despite the cover, appeared to reflect variations in the underlying Palaeozoic rocks. Three of the Au zones could be in terrain affected by extensions or intersections of faults, a feature in common with the established Au deposits in central Victoria. Reflections of concealed Palaeozoic rocks included a possible zone of concealed Cambrian greenstones that coincides with three of the Au zones. It was concluded that each of the An zones represents a groundwater Au focus that warrants follow-up exploration.

Coal seam methane (CSM) is an æunconventionalÆ gas resource that is becoming an important energy resource for Australia, especially along the eastern seaboard. It has been conventionally believed that methane in high rank coals was exclusively derived from thermocatalytic processes during decomposition of coal at elevated temperatures. However, recent re-interpretations of gas composition and isotope data have indicated that microbial methane generation may be one of the main processes responsible for the accumulation of commercially producible methane in some coals. In low rank (æbrownÆ and sub-bituminous) coals, methane (CH4) is mainly generated by microbial activity at low temperatures. The amount of this biogenic gas generated and accumulated in low rank coals depends largely on the rate of burial and depth. Most low rank coals are æunder-saturatedÆ with respect to their maximum gas sorption capacity. In contrast, high rank coals may be highly saturated due to extensive gas generation from both thermogenic and secondary biogenic processes. However, in basins where secondary biogenic gases have not replenished the thermogenic gas lost during basin uplift, the coals will be æunder-saturatedÆ. In many basins around the world, high CSM producing zones appear to contain secondary biogenic CH4 generated by microbes transported in meteoric water recharge through permeable coal seams. Biogenic CH4 generation requires the activity of a consortium of anaerobic respiring microorganisms, fermentative bacteria and acetogenic bacteria to break down complex organic molecules to simpler molecules having one or two carbon atoms, which enables methanogenic archaea to generate CH4. The two main methanogenic pathways in the generation of secondary biogenic gas from coal are aceticlastic reaction and carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. In eastern Australian coals CO2 reduction appears to be the main process. The types of microbes that are directly involved in these processes are unknown because they have not yet been isolated from the coal seams. The CSIRO is currently investigating the processes of biogenic gas generation in Australian coals. Potential may exist to introduce appropriate microbes into deep coal seams to enhance methane saturation levels, gas sorption capacities and permeabilities.

On-line analysis systems have found widespread application in the metalliferous mineral and coal industries. The continuous analysis and rapid response of these systems has led to improved control of mining, processing and blending operations, with increased recovery of valuable minerals and coal combustibles.The paper reviews developments in on-line analysis by CSIRO and Mineral Control Instrumentation Ltd which led to the award of the Australia Prize 1992. These commercialised systems analyse mineral and coal slurries; determine the ash and moisture contents of coal on conveyors, and the moisture content of coke on conveyors; and determine the carbon content of fly ash. These gauges are estimated to have resulted in productivity increases valued at $50 million per year to Australia.

Numerical simulation by a finite element computer code has bee* used to identify key stages in the initiation of confined bulk explosive by cast primers. The simulations have been verified by comparison with experimental field measurements of shock arrival time versus distance above the primer for a relatively sensitive emulsion doped with ammonium nitrate prills. Further simulations were performed examining the effect of primer size in a relatively insensitive blend of ANFO and emulsion. Immediately above the primers, changes in shock velocity in the explosive were caused by the interactions between shocks originating from different surfaces of the cylindrical primers. At a distance up the explosive column corresponding to about one to two borehole diameters, the arrival of shock reflections off the borehole walls caused a sudden acceleration up to the confined steady state detonation velocity. The simulations reproduced experimental observations that primer size has only a weak effect on changes of shock velocity with distance for confined explosives. However, it was predicted that primer size has a strong influence on the intensity and duration of the pressure pulses that bulk explosive send into the rock surrounding the primer region.

Flotation frothers are heteropolar molecules that are preferentially adsorbed at the bubble interface to enhance the flotation performance by promoting the formation of small and stable bubbles. Frothers have different characteristics that can be used to classify them. A classification framework has been recently presented by Saavedra Moreno et al (2022) to classify non-ionic frothers by conducting a principal component analysis (PCA) and a hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). However, for the purpose of the present research, only five frother characteristics, including molecular weight (MW), hydrophile–lipophile balance (HLB), critical coalescence concentration (CCC), the minimum Sauter mean diameter (DL), and foam stability index (DFI) were used in the PCA and HCA. All those characteristics were evaluated for a two-phase system in the absence of particles. Realising the important role that particles play in froth stability and behaviour, the effect of hydrophobic particles on the presented frother classification framework was investigated in this study. Four frothers with different characteristics, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 1-pentanol, tri (propylene glycol) (TPG), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether (TPM), were chosen. The experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of silica particles esterified with 1-pentanol. It was evident that the results for 1-pentanol, TPM, MIBC, and TPG in the three-phase system agreed well with the frother classification presented for the two-phase system as frothers were clustered in the same groups. The findings from this research support the use of the frother classification system presented in two-phase system to select a specific frother for a particular application without the necessity of conducting laborious experiments in a three-phase system.

The derelict Lake George Mine is located at Captains Flat in NSW, acommunity of approximately 450, which lies some 43 km southeast ofQueanbeyan. It straddles the Molonglo River, which flows toQueanbeyan and thence the nationÆs capital, Canberra. Catastrophictailings dam failures in 1939 and again in 1943 resulted in the transportand dispersion of thousands of tonnes of sulfidic wastes downstream,with terminal settling in Lake Burley Griffin, in Canberra. The mine wasclosed in 1962, and major rehabilitation in 1996 - 1997 addressed the riskof further collapses, and reduced water flow into the underground mine.Nevertheless, acid mine drainage from the mine, and seepages ofcontaminated water from the capped tailings dumps continue to pollutethe Molonglo River for some 30 km downstream.Environmentally, the highest contributor to the total contaminant loadof the river is the Main Adit Spring. This was shown to be a constantgroundwater-driven acidic flow, with contaminant generation resultingalmost entirely from the ingress of gaseous oxygen into the undergroundworkings. Long term remediation may be possible at source, by pumpingreducing gases into the sealed mine, but the probability of thistechnology succeeding to the required degree is yet to be demonstrated. For at least the medium term, treatment of contaminated water flow(s)will be required to achieve any of the water quality targets that may beapplicable to the river. Three methodologies were short listed, but anumber of strategic uncertainties remain, which the NSW Derelict MinesProgram will address. Future risk arising from long-term contaminantrelease by the treatment wastes must be considered. Appropriate data,and realistic long-term performance parameters regarding the relativestabilities of water treatment sludges are scarce, and make properevaluation of competing technologies problematic.
