Mining is currently undergoing a progressive expansion into novel environments (such as the deep ocean), commodities (such as tantalum, rare earths, and other ‘green economy minerals’), and new methods (such as the autonomous underwater cutting machines required to operate in the deep ocean environment, or the use of expanding grouts to deliver a blast-free mining method). The advent of novel mining, environments and commodities heralds an era that will undoubtedly start with much discomfort on the part of regulators and stakeholders, due to a feeling of overwhelming uncertainty. These proposed mining scenarios have few precedents, few examples of successful implementation, short baseline monitoring periods, and few examples of legacy sites that may assist with understanding long term risk and exposure. The evolution of the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) process in many regulatory environments recognises stakeholder engagement in a formal and facilitated manner. This is a positive step, and allows stakeholders to be much more meaningfully involved in the permitting process than they historically were. However, with this advance comes the challenge of identifying and communicating with stakeholders; sharing information in a meaningful way, fostering relationships with what can be an extremely large group, and delivering on commitments that inspire confidence to permit operations that have never been permitted before. In order to meet this challenge, it is suggested that changes to collection of data, communication of data, the nature of commitments, and the reporting of performance need to be made in order to effectively communicate management of new technologies, and the impacts that mining may have in new environments (such as the deep ocean). The communication challenge is necessarily greater when describing technology that has never been used, or environments that have never previously been accessed by humans on an industrial scale. The mineralogy and extractive metallurgy of platinum and palladium in ores and residues is examined and the relative reactivity of Pt, Pd, PtS and PdS in cyanide and chloride media at 20¦C is discussed. Electrochemical measurements establish that Pd is readily leached in chloride media but more slowly in cyanide media due to a passivating PdO film. The passivating oxide film on Pt prevents leaching in either system at ambient temperatures. The results of leaching Au, Pd and Pt from an iron oxide residue obtained from the Sherritt Gordon Process using CN/air and Cl-/H202 are compared. It appears that passivation is overcome either by roasting at ?600¦ or by leaching at >_100¦C.

This paper presents the findings from an experimental study of the effects of shock and gas penetration breakage mechanisms in rick blasting. A blasthole liner method, which realistically seperated these two basic sources of energy in blasting, was developed and utilized. The use of four different explosives with contrasting detonation behaviour produced a wide variation in the nature of explosive energy transfer to the rock. Through extensive field experiments it was found that, relative to low VOD dynamite, the high VOD emulsion imparted greater shock to the rock and therefore produced finer fragmentation and greater back damage. The comparatively lower heave energy of the emulsion caused less immediate blast results were obtained with watergel and ANFO explosives, which have detonation behaviour and energy partitioning charecteristics lying between emulsions and dynamite.

Many flotation operations need to improve liberation to increase recovery, yet often plant operators are concerned that finer grinding will produce æslimesÆ with low flotation recovery. Yet simple circuits can be designed to give good liberation and excellent fines recovery. The economics of fine grinding has changed fundamentally with new stirred milling processes like the IsaMill. This has also transformed flotation design due to the clean surfaces produced in the inert grinding environment and the narrow size distribution produced by the IsaMill. Past poor experiences with æovergrindingÆ in flotation circuits was often due to the wide size distribution and the degradation of mineral surfaces produced by conventional devices using steel media, like ball mills and tower mills. The correct practice is to design both grinding and flotation together to suit the liberation characteristics of the ore. This may result in several stages of grinding and flotation, recovering mineral as soon as it is liberated, then applying further grinding energy only to those particles that still need liberation. Flotation then occurs in relatively narrow size bands and with minerals with similar liberation characteristics. Though the circuit may look more complex on paper, in reality it is far simpler to operate since each section performs predicably. Circuit design also needs to address materials handling. Finer particles affect froth handling and dewatering, but can still be easily handled by standard products with careful attention to design of launders, pumps and pumpboxes, and de-aeration before thickening and filtering. Excellent examples of designing circuits to include ultrafine grinding include Mt Isa and McArthur River (MRM). In the last decade these operations have produced over ten million tonnes of concentrate with an average grain size below 10 ¦m and above 80 per cent recovery. At Mt Isa, zinc recovery was increased by ten per cent by applying fine grinding to existing poorly liberated streams. In fact, grinding finer in the IsaMill actually improved the recovery of fine particles by ten per cent, and maximum particle flotation recovery occurs for 10 ¦m particles. A more recent example is the flotation of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The use of conventional ball or tower milling to improve liberation is severely limited by the impact of commonly associated chromite on classification, and degradation of flotation performance by the steel grinding environment. The ability of open circuit IsaMills to deliver a narrowly sized ultrafine product with clean mineral surfaces is transforming the design of platinum flotation circuits. The science and practice of fine-grained flotation is now thoroughly proven. The availability of the 2.6 MW IsaMill has made ultra fine grinding a practical tool for flotation plant design. It is expected to become a standard choice for future applications of both fine-grained ores and for minerals with difficult flotation characteristics.

The countercurrent gas-solid-heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temp-erature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assump-tions, to be corrected as the experimental work develops, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating con-ditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which-controls the 2 strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char-strength in the pilot plant in 1961 and a prediction is made of ' a way ' in ' which the limitation could be overcome.

While sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. It is often left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Yet sampling and sample processing are of vital importance. There is little point in making major capital investments in the latest analytical equipment and spending considerable time obtaining the best analytical precision, if the sample provided for analysis is seriously biased in the first place.

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. Fresh air intake in an underground coal mine is of critical importance to the occupational health and safety of workers due to the dynamic, confined and dangerous nature of the mining environment. In most coal mines in South Africa, belt road is not separated from the fresh air intake to the sections. Intake air to coal production faces generally contains dust generated by conveyor belts, transfer points and travelling roads. Long roadways (up to a few kilometres in some of the existing mines) to the coal sections are involved in the ventilation circuits of individual sections. This leads to a progressive increase in the dust levels in the intake fresh air and thus high dust levels in the air delivered to the working sections downstream. In the process of reducing worker exposure to dust in the face area, attention to the monitoring of fresh intake air is generally given a low priority. This paper summarises the intake dust levels measured in selected South African underground coal mining sections over the past five years and its use as a parameter in assessing worker exposure to dust through a newly developed model called the Dust Exposure Level Index (DELI). Based on the measured data of the South African coal mines, the average section intake dust level was 0.78 mg/m3. Approximately 60 per cent of the samples collected for the study have exceeded the 0.5 mg/m3. The intake dust level measured at a longwall face was much higher than in the CM headings. The measured section intake dust levels furnish the South African coal mining industry with the latest depiction of the level of face area dust contamination due to the intake air. Further, this paper demonstrates the use of intake dust level as a parameter in estimating exposure levels of workers, as it clearly plays as a corner stone in effective control of exposure to face area respirable dust. It must be borne in mind that intake dust is a base level to the mine worker exposed to dust without carrying out any additional work in the section. If the intake air is seriously contaminated by airborne respirable dust; then the exposure of the workforce in the section will constantly be elevated by that background dust level.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. A bulk analyser based on the gamma-ray resonance scattering process can be used to give a rapid and accurate measure of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel averaged over a large mass of sample, typi- cally 20 kg. It is shown that for a bulk sample containing about 3 wt.% Cu, crushing to -25 mm is the only sample preparation requited for analysis to within an error of about 0.06 wt.% Cu (errors quoted are one standard deviation). A comparison of bulk analyser and con- ventional assays on the same bulk samples can be used to estimate the sample preparation errors in the conventional methods. The squared deviations between bulk analyser and conventional assays are approximated by the sum of variances in sample preparation, conventional analysis, and bulk sample analy- sis. The sample preparation error was esti- mated as 0.26 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -2 mm before splitting, 0.08 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -0.35 mm before splitting, and 0.04 wt.% Cu for the average of 15 grab samples from bulk samples which had been crushed to -2 mm. The average copper grade for each group of samples was about 1.7 wt.%. Results are presented which show that

This paper aims to address the issue of the public's image of the extractive minerals industry. What is it about the industry that incites such negative feelings and are they justified? Are we really the 'rapists of the land' that many would have us believe? Has the industry really not improved since the old gold boom days?   I believe that the fundamental cause for the public's view is lack of knowledge and understanding of the industry as a result of the dislocation of the end production from its source. There are few people who look at a house, car, record, toilet, tooth-brush, bottle of coke or pair of glasses and see the mine site that supplied the source material. But the mine site and its products should be inseparably linked. This is one area where we should be educating the public û it is all very well being anti-development but the population as a whole is not really prepared to live without its 'mineral'-derived necessities. It is very easy to say that we do not want minerals development in New Zealand but are we prepared to live with the consequences, ie go without its products? We have a duty as a global citizen to develop our own resources rather than expect Third World nations desperate for overseas investment, often with governments who are not prepared to constrain or control their development, to be exploited. New Zealand is not the only 'beautiful' place in the world and we should be aware of the impact that our demands for resources have on the countries who supply us. We have a duty to be a good global citizen.   So how does the industry improve its public image? The key here has to be to educate. This does not have to be high powered or expensive but can be as simple as getting a few local kids' hands dirty panning, and gaining some firsthand knowledge of the industry. The industry also needs to be more pro-active in the public arena. Yes, the industry has skeletons, but the industry should be publicly displaying them û admit that things have gone wrong but let's do it ourselves and not leave it up to the environmental groups to accuse, point the finger and put the industry under public scrutiny. The industry should also be publicising its successes, inviting the local press, councils, etc to view the latest area rehabilitated. But more than anything else we must tell the public what the minerals industry means to New Zealand. Can they really live without us?

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). Digitally enhanced Landsat MSS images are being used'in delineating the structural and tectonic features in the Arabian Shield as part of a project funded by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) of Saudi Arabia. The delineated features together with statistical modeling and structural analysis are to assist in an improved understanding of the evolution and mineralization of the Arabian Shield. Specific emphasis is to be given to relating the extracted linear features to the location of known mineral occurrences and areas of potential geologic hazards. A number of textural (spatial) and spectral enhancement techniques have been applied, to the MSS data covering selected areas, in selecting the most optimal enhancement product for visually delineating the structural geologic .features.

The Coeur dÆAlene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. The Proterozoic Revett Formation hosts most of the mesothermal Ag-Pb-Zn vein ore in the district; it consists of informally designated lower, middle, and upper members. All three members show up to an order of magnitude of southward thickening across the regionally significant Osburn fault. Changes in thickness of the Revett Formation across the Osburn fault reflect a major, down-to-the-south, crustal-scale fault that:was active during sedimentation, was periodically reactivated during the structural and metallogenic history of the district, and likely provided first-order control over regional fluid flow during mineralization events. Where vein structures intersect favourable strata, they produce rich ore; where vein structures cross unfavourable strata, they are poorly mineralised or barren. The most favourable host rock in the district is quartzite, which accounts for the large production from the quartzite-rich Revett Formation.The district has five main types of hydrothermal alteration:feldspar destruction, hydrothermal bleaching, carbonatisation, sulfidation, and silicification. Feldspar destruction is the most extensive and pervasive type of alteration, involving the district-wide absence of feldspar from Belt Supergroup rocks. Hydrothermal bleaching results from the destruction of hematite; it forms alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around many of the mineralised veins. Siderite alteration is most diagnostic of mineralisation, forming alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around all mineralised veins. Fine-grained arsenopyrite and/or fine-grained pyrite commonly form alteration zones adjacent to high-grade ore shoots that extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Widespread silicification is most easily recognised by the presence of numerous quartz veins.

Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins in the Hodgkinson Province are hosted by subgreenschist to greenschist facies metasediments and show no spatial association with granitic rocks. They commonly parallel axial plane foliations or occur in brittle to brittle-ductile shear zones. Detailed mapping in the Hodgkinson goldfield indicates that vein systems are isolated in distinct structural and lithologic domains by post-mineralization faulting. Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins have distinctive mesoscopic textures characteristic of the mesothermal vein environment. Some of the antimony-gold-quartz veins are located on domain boundaries which truncate the gold mineralization. In. some areas, tin and tungsten-tin mineralization which are spatially related to Late Palaeozoic granitoids appear to postdate the gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz mineralization.Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic studies of vein and alteration assemblages associated with these diverse ores provide constraints on fluid sources and have implications for the origin of mesothermal gold mineralization. The available isotopic data are consistent with a dominantly magmatic source for tin and tungsten-tin mineralization although there is evidence of a late-stage meteoric component in some tin-mineralizing systems.
