Horizontal belt filters are typically used for separation of relatively free filtering solids where good post treatment is required. He horizontal belt filter is a continuous filter with an endless cloth supported on a grooved carrier belt. The belt and cloth are driven around two rollers across a series of evacuated suction boxes. The feed suspension is introduced at one end of the filter and deliquored to produce a cake at the other end. The benefits of using horizontal belt filters are good cake washing, continuous and visible processing, fully automatic operation, flexibility, high capacity and relative high speeds of operation. If required, horizontal belt filters enable efficient counter-current washings to minimize the usage of wash liquid. The horizontal belt filter has applications in the following: [? Gravity assists the cake formation and the feed can be introduced in multiple stages. 2.2 Cake Washing Once the cake is formed, wash liquor/water can be introduced onto the top of the cake via a wash launder or sprays. Multiple wash stages, co-current, counter-current or direct washing can be added by increasing the length of the filter.

Discussion held at the sessions of the Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-As a result of this discussion, an expression of opinion covering all points of unanimous agreement was adopted and signed by members of the Institute party as individuals. This statement, which was printed in the Bulletin of December, 1910, is reprinted below, as an introduction to ,the detailed report of the discussion. It should be clearly understood that it does not constitute an official declaration by the Institute, the rules of which forbid any such action. At the New Haven meeting of February, 1909, a free discussion of the plan of the canal took place, in which the critics of the present scheme had full opportunity to state their views. That discussion was continued at considerable length in the newspapers ; but the Institute was never committed to either side. In this latter instance, the situation is precisely similar. Certain members and guests of the Institute, having had the advantage of later developments and of personal inspection, have expressed the conclusions at which they have arrived on their own responsibility ; and these conclusions are published by the Institute, subject to further discussion, like any other part of its proceedings. The general statement referred to contained a promise that the full discussion, of which it was a result, would be subsequently printed ; and this promise is fulfilled, so far as practicable, in the subjoined report, concerning which I beg to offer the following explanations: 1. It is made up of the remarks of the members of our party, as subsequently written out and mailed to the Secretary. 2. In editing these contributions, I have condensed the material considerably by cutting out much repetition of opinions and phrases ; and in such excision, I, frankly confess, the authors whose communications were delayed, have been the sufferers. Nevertheless, there is a good deal of repetition left, as there must be, when so many persons had talked so much, and come to agreement upon so many points. 3. "The Key Lake mill was commissioned in 1983 to process the two Key Lake ore deposits. With the depletion of these ore bodies in 1999, the plant was converted to mill the exceptionally rich McArthur River deposit located seventy eight kilometers northeast of the Key Lake mine site. This paper describes in detail the Key Lake milling process. The mill consists of a grinding circuit, a leachkounter current decantation circuit, a solvent extraction circuit, a yellowcake precipitatiodcalciner circuit, an ammonium sulphate crystallization circuit, and a waste treatment circuit. The mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U308) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8.Following grinding, the uranium is leached in a two stage leach circuit using oxygen and sulphuric acid. An eight-thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit and then precipitated using ammonia. It is then calcined at 840' Celsius, and packaged into drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover ammonium sulphate produced in the process and a waste treatment circuit."

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. Table 1 exposes the two main objectives of this AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting."

This bulletin is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. A study of this subject was undertaken by the Bureau in cooperation with a large number of mining companies in 1928. This study continued for 5 years, during which engineers of the Mining Division of the Bureau visited most of the larger mines and many smaller ones in the United States, as well as several mines in Canada and Mexico. As a result of this study, 75 reports dealing with underground mining methods and costs at different mines were published as information circulars. Circulars also were issued on 6 open-pit mines and 2 gold-dredging operations. These circulars were written by the managers, superintendents, and engineers in charge of the operations, in some instances in collaboration with Bureau engineers. They were prepared according to a standard outline drawn up by the Bureau to obtain uniformity in textual treatment and in the arrangement and basis of setting up cost and operating data.

The microstructure of explosion-bonded pairs of similar and dissimilar metals has been investigated by electron microscopy. A review of the specific problems encountered and the methods used for obtaining surface replicas and thin-film transmission specimens of the bond interface is given. The bond area is mainly characterized by continuous and practically diffusionless metallurgical bonding. The very large shear stresses induced along the collision front of the plates being joined causes extreme grain elongation and a symmetrical pattern of subgrains in the bonding direction. The bond zone is also characterized by a very high density of dislocations and pressure-induced twins. Localized heating occurring during the cladding process can result in partial re-crystallization or the formation of thin layers of molten material. The force of precisely controlled explosions causing a high-velocity impact between metal plates has been used for several years to achieve metallurgical bonding between an extremely wide variety of metals. This method essentially consists of accelerating a plate to high velocity toward a stationary plate by a detonating explosive. Since the restrictions to bonding are not those encountered with conventional nethods, it becomes possible to bond pairs of metals having widely different mechanical properties that are immiscible or form brittle intermetallic compounds. Many applications of such composite metals are found in the field of corrosion protection as well as numerous other fields; for example, explosion bonding is being applied for fabricating the materials used by the United States Mint in the new sandwich-type coins. The primary condition for establishing a metallurgical bond is that absolutely clean metal surfaces be brought together. Any metal exposed to the atmosphere is covered with oxides, adsorbed gases, and other contaminants; even a very forceful impact of two such surfaces is not sufficient for bonding. Cowan and Holtz-man,"' who reviewed the dynamics of colliding plates in detail, showed that in order to achieve a good bond the explosion conditions must be chosen in such a way that the plate collision velocity is less than the sonic velocity, in which case no oblique shock waves are attached to the collision front. A pressure wave is then generated ahead of the collision line, and the material forming the colliding surface of each of the plates flows forward and is ejected in the form of a spray, the so-called jet. The dynamic elastic limit of the metals must be exceeded so that there is sufficient plastic deformation. At the point where the jet formed by the junction of the inner surface layers of both plates separates from the combined plates, the material experi- ences a very high shearing strain and the pressure can reach several hundred kilobars. This process strongly influences the microstructure of the bond zone as will be seen later. Behind the collision front, uncontami-nated layers of internal material are brought together under high pressure and are thus metallurgically bonded. I) STRUCTURE OF EXPLOSION BONDS The different types of explosion bonds that can be obtained depend on the explosion conditions, and have been investigated by Cowan and Holtzman,1'2 Holtzman,3 Klein; Bahrani and crossland,' and Buck and Horn-bogen. The preferred kind for practical applications is the so-called wavy bond, typical examples of which are given in Fig. 1 showing light micrographs of various metal-to-metal interfaces. In forming this type-- of bond the collision energy is mainly expended in jetting, the formation of waves, and localized melting. Beyond the crest of the waves, eddy-shaped areas are observed in which the two metals are mixed in a complex pattern of streaks. Cowan and Holtzmanl first proposed that this wavy pattern is analogous to periodic eddy shedding in the flow of a viscous fluid around an obstacle (Von Karman's eddy street). The mass of metal ahead of the stagnation point, which is associated with the jet and has forward momentum, plays the role of an obstacle and the eddies created in the flow of solid metal around the stagnation point are preserved in the final clad specimen. This idea has been reviewed more recently by Klein4 and the variables involved in the wave formation have been discussed in some detail by Bahrani and crosslands and Buck and Hornbogen.6 Several studies of the structure of explosion bonds by light metallography have already been published.1-6 Aside from the waviness and the eddies which were mentioned above, the most striking characteristic of the area in the vicinity of the bond interface is a very considerable longitudinal grain deformation which appears to be strongest at the metal-to-metal boundary and dies out as one moves away from it. Large twins are often observed within the deformed grains, and molten areas are found in the center of the eddy-shaped structures situated beyond the crest of the waves. The large hydrostatic pressures and shear stresses occurring at the interface modify the mechanical and chemical properties of the bond zone. Increases in hardness in this area have been reported by various authors.396 The defects along the interface can also cause a local increase of the chemical reactivity and thus might be expected to boost the etching rate. However, the effects of this preferential etching cannot be observed by light microscopy due to its inherently limited resolution power. The same limitation precludes the observation of morphological features directly along the bond interface as well as the interface itself. Furthermore, no information can be gained by light-

The disposal of end-of-life electronics is an issue receiving increasing scrutiny. This paper evaluates several alternatives for recycling cathode ray tubes (CRTs) within monitors and televisions. The primary recycling options for the glass, reuse in new CRTs or as a smelter flux, are examined from economic and environmental standpoints. The economics are modeled using a cost model that includes dependencies on processing costs, transportation logistics, and incoming material composition. The environmental consequences are modeled using life cycle assessment methodologies to determine the energy embodied in each processing alternative. Results map out preferred processing alternatives across a range of technological and operational conditions. The results indicate that economic costs and environmental consequences are heavily impacted by transportation. The preferred destination of CRT glass for a recycler is highly dependent on the proximity of the consumer to the recycler, although it is generally economically advantageous for the recycler to extensively dismantle the CRTs.

Optical sensors have emerged during the telecom boom in the late 1900s, due to the availability to low-cost telecom-grade optical components. It's only after the telecom industry's fall in 2004 that optical sensors became sufficiently developed to be a viable technology for real-world applications. Geotechnical applications have long relied on electrical sensors such as thermocouples, strain, and the venerable vibrating wire to measure physical phenomena. Although these are well suited for a large variety of applications, electrical sensors cannot be used for all applications: these are vulnerable to noise, hazardous voltages and corrosion, limiting the environments in which they can be used. In addition, electrical wires can also become an issue when sensors require external excitation or are distant from the measurement system. Finally, changes in physical properties of electrical sensors and systems over time makes regular calibration a necessity - not easy to do when these are permanently mounted on structures. Optical sensing systems are non-conducting and use light to perform various measurements. There are several optical sensor technologies available, each with different strengths and weaknesses. In addition, there are different methods of interrogating optical sensors, each of which also present different strengths and weaknesses. To make matters worse, configuring the interrogation and scaling to physical units can also be challenging to the unprepared engineer. This paper will present a holistic view of optical sensing, presenting the different optical sensor technologies and interrogation techniques. Sample optical sensing systems will be revealed and top considerations for optical sensing will be presented.

The metallurgy of manganese has developed along the lines of iron metal¬ lurgy. Enough high-grade ore has Been available so that by reduction with carbon it could be turned into an iron-ma.nga.nese alloy and a slag containing some 9 to 15 percent manganese. More siliceous ores have been smelted in the blast furnace to form iron-silicon-manganese alloys called spiegel. When lower-grade ores came in for serious consideration, which lias only been since l°l4, two types of processes received the most consideration — hydrometallurgical processes to produce a concentrate which could be smelted like the higher-grade ore and processes involving concentration of the manga¬ nese from manganiferous iron ores by preferential reduction of the iron (184)1. Special chapters in this bulletin are devoted to the production of ferro¬ manganese from ore, the hydrometallurgy cf manganese, and the Bureau of Mines modification of the preferential reduction process. Other methods of producing manganese alloys from low-grade or refractory ores have been suggested and may find future application. Manganese has a very high affinity for sulphur and is particularly adaptable to concentration by matte smelting. According to Betts (26), manganese silicate may be smelted with pyrite to give manganese sulphide and iron silicate. This method would be applicable to concentration of either the silicate or carbonate ores. The sulphide, once obtained, could be roasted to oxide and reduced in the usual way. Another possibility for the production of manganese from silicate ores involves their reduction by silicon or manganese silicides. Swedish Patent 52290, February 25, 1925. covers the reduction of a slag rich in manganese by silicon-manganese alloy containing more than 10 percent silicon, Joseph H. Brennan (38.) describes the concentration of manganese iron ores by partial reduction with silicon. Beckett (7,4,19) describes the reduction of manganese dioxide with a manganese silicide for the production of standard ferromanganese. Beckett gives as a typical alloy, manganese 64.4, silicon 24.6, and as a typi¬ cal ore, 5S.5O manganese as MnO^. The product of the reaction between these two is 80.11 percent manganese and 1.22 percent silicon.

Thank you, Syd, for the kind introduction and for inviting me to give the Keynote Address at this very prestigious gathering of some of the finest intellect and talent in the domestic and international coal industry. CONSOL Energy has been a part of this conference for its entire 24-year existence. We have presented 27 papers over that time. CONSOL employees have also been members of the planning committee for the conference, and we have been pleased to support the event both financially and with many participants. So I am honored to be here with all of you this morning, especially during such a positive period for coal. You can just feel the enthusiasm in this room for our industry, and for this conference. I can tell you, there?s also a lot of enthusiasm and excitement in CONSOL Energy?s boardroom. And our enthusiasm is mirrored on Wall Street. But there remains an ironic twist to all of this attention. Even when times are good, the coal industry seems to go largely unnoticed by the mainstream. Outside of West Virginia and other coal-producing regions, the industry still seems to lack influence and support, at least here in America. As an example, last month, an ABC News crew visited our Blacksville 2 Mine, near here, to do a feature story on increased employment in the coal industry.

Although two-entry yield pillar-based gate roads supported by wooden cribs have been commonly used throughout longwalling in the Wasatch PlateadRoan Cliffs coalfield of central Utah, a three-entry yield-abutment gate road configuration was recently trialed in the Hiawatha Seam at the Genwal Resources (GRI) Crandall Canyon No. 1 Mine, near Huntington, UT. Pillar, entry, and cable bolt performance were monitored through second panel mining using a fairly extensive array of geomechanical instruments installed over a span of four crosscuts. Ground pressure and entry closure measurements confirmed that the 9.1-m-wide (30-ft) yield pillar was partially shielded from first panel longwall loads by the 36.6-m-wide (120-ft) abutment pillar, and consequently, experienced only minor yielding until the approach of the second panel face. Complete yielding of the 9. I-m-wide (30-ft) pillar occurred when the second panel was approximately 6.1 m (20 ft) inby the instrumentation site. Average cable bolt loads and differential roof sag remained low through second panel mining and tailgate entry ground conditions were excellent; however, very high ground pressures in the abutment and yield pillars, and second panel rib strongly suggest a high potential for coal bumps utilizing this gate road configuration at mining cover depths in excess of 396 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). This conclusion is supported by the suspected occurrence of small coal bumps along the abutment pillar ribs, observed indirectly as fresh debris in the middle entry just behind the second face. This paper presents a case history developed from the geotechnical measurements and on-site observations of this unique application of a yield-abutment gate road configuration and cable support system in the Hiawatha Seam.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

It is generally recognised that slags are active participants in pyrometallurgical processes, and not merely inert liquids which must be produced. to effect separation of gangue material in smelting, or of impurities in refining. The importance attached to slag-metal reactions in steelmaking is shown by the numerous investigations in this field. However, there are still many important reactions of slags which require explanation. In this paper some new aspects of the reactions of slags will be discussed, as far as possible quantitatively.FREE AND COMBINED OXIDESMetallurgical experience indicates that variations in the composition of slags produce changes in the chemical behaviour of the various components. These variations have been generally ascribed to changes in the proportions of free and combined oxides, i.e., compounds have been assumed to be present in the liquid slag.Considerable support for this view has been adduced from the existence of compounds such as metallic silicates, phosphates, etc., in the solIdified slag. And they are willing to spend the necessary funds on those systems, provided they are affordable, environ-mentally friendly and sustainable. From June 20-23, professionals in the tunneling and underground construction industry from around the world gathered in Portland, OR to learn new ways of providing those systems using the latest technology available. The North American Tunneling (NAT) conference attracted 803 attendees and 108 exhibiting suppliers of equipment and services.

The purpose of any steel-making process is to convert the two raw materials iron and scrap into steel. The chemical analysis of the steel is set within certain limits which involve the physical proper- ties desired by the consumer. In addition to tensile properties a large number of other properties are at the present time desired, such as impact resistance, grain size regulation, specific degrees of hardenability, resistance to creep at high temperatures, resistance to expansion on heat treatment, the ability of the product to undergo extreme amounts of cold deformation without failure, and many other properties which are not directly related to the specified chemical analysis. Variations in many of the properties of plain-carbon steels are due to elements and compounds not included in the ordinary "five element"§ composition. Such variations result primarily from variations in oxidation of the metal in the furnace and from the deoxidation method employed. The steel-making problem therefore resolves itself into two distinct sections: (I) the elimination of certain elements from the charge (the iron and scrap entering the furnace) and the addition of materials to meet the chemical specifications for the heat; (2) the manipulation of the slag and metal and the process of deoxidation to give certain desired properties in the steel entirely apart from the chemical analysis specified. A quick-reaction, mine permissible rescue vehicle (MERV) was developed for use by rescue teams. The MERV is a 6-wheeled, battery-powered unit with life support equipment and instrumentation; designed for a two-man team, with provisions for handling two victims or tools in a trailer. The vehicle is 100 inches long, 56 inches wide, and maximum height of 34 inches. It can be lowered down most mine shafts and has clearance to travel mine railways. The vehicle has power to all six wheels with power transmitted separately to either or both sets of wheels. Low-pressure, high-traction tires give the vehicle the ability to handle soft, muddy mine floors, flooded areas and significant obstacles, and can negotiate a 45% grade. Power and life support are sufficient for a 4-hour mission. The life support system is a commercially-available, approved unit currently used by MESA rescue personnel. A payout wire system provides communication between the vehicle and home base over a distance of 10,000 feet. On-board monitoring of carbon monoxide, methane and oxygen is provided, with master and individual alarms to warn of gas concentrations outside pre-set limits. A lightweight, water-tight trailer was developed for carrying victims or hauling tools and equipment.

For mining medium-hard materials on the surface, "Continuous Surface Miners" have been employed for some years. The latest generation surface miner extends the performance of this type of machine to the point where the same cost efficiencies can now be achieved in medium-hard materials as has been achieved in softer materials by machines such as the bucket wheel excavator. The paper explains briefly the technology of the Krupp Surface Miner (recently released to the market) and develops the costs of ownership and typical operating costs. Comparisons are made between a shoveLtruck system and Krupp Surface Miner (KSM) systems based on both truck and conveyor transport systems. Further benefits of mining with the KSM, such as environmental, selective mining and improved product reovery are discussed briefly. The equipment is now available to mine semi-hard materials (with compressive strengths up to 60MPa) on a continuous basis and reap the benefits which continuous systems can deliver. All new and existing open cut mines should review their costs with regard to this technology.

The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a comprehensive study of coal strength. More than 4000 individual test results from over 60 seams were extracted from the literature and combined in the most complete data base of the uniaxial compressive strength of coal ever assembled. In addition, more than 100 case studies of in-mine pillar performance were available in the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) data base. Statistical analysis of this wealth of data has yielded valuable results. The data shows clearly that the "size effect" is related to coal structure. The widely-used Gaddy formula, which predicts a significant strength reduction as the specimen size is increased, was found to apply only to "blocky" coals. For friable coals, the size effect was much less pronounced or even non-existent. Case histories of failed pillars are the best available data on in situ coal strength. This study found no correlation between the ARMPS stability factor of failed pillars and coal specimen strength. A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.
