"The mechanical properties of cast iron depend on the graphite morphology and characteristics of metallic matrix. In spheroidal graphite iron these properties are affected by the nodule count, nodule percentage, nodularity, nodules per square mm, nodule types and size distribution. In this work an attempt is made to study of the effect of centrifugal and gravity casting process on the morphology and mechanical properties. A comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties of specimens of the cast are studied. It has been observed that the centrifugal effect produces an increase in rupture strain but hardness is unaffected. In microstructure it has been observed that the centrifugal effect produces an increase in the number of bigger nodules and decrease in the number of smaller nodules and an increase of nodules per square mm. It has no effect on nodularity percentage. The centrifugal casting process produces better mechanical properties.IntroductionCast iron, the first man-made composite, is at least 2500 years old. It remains the most important casting material, with over 70% of the total world tonnage [1,7]. The main reasons for cast irons longevity are its wide range of mechanical and physical properties coupled with its competitive price [l]. Gray cast iron is traditionally used in many industries because it is characterized by a flexibility of use, excellent castability, low cost, wide range of achievable mechanical properties. Gray cast irons are selected according to their tensile strength, high modulus of elasticity, good wear resistance and good machinability are desired and for this a high-strength cast iron is selected [2].Flake Graphite and Spheroidal Graphite irons are predominantly being used to manufacture heavy automobile components throughout the world. The properties of gray iron castings are much dependent on foundry practice. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the family of cast irons is the morphology of the graphite phase, which occurs as a result of changes in chemical composition, melting, melt handling techniques and the process of solidification and subsequent cooling. The significance of these differences through graphite morphology is observed primarily in their effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the iron, but in the foundries these are also known to influence the ability to manufacture sound and dependable castings."

"In recent years, zinc recovery from flue dusts and other industrial wastes has been increased, offering to the market a large tonnage of secondary zinc oxides, which can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content.The ZINCEXTM Technology has been commercially applied for more than thirty years and represents the most suitable solution to deal with secondary or crude zinc oxides due to its flexibility, simplicity, and cost-efficiency, allowing production of SHG electrolytic zinc and pure zinc sulfate salts thanks to the flexibility and selectivity of the zinc solvent extraction unit regarding to get rid of impurities.A dual plant able to produce electrolytic zinc and crystallized zinc sulfate has been engineered to provide a flexible and profitable solution to zinc market. A description of the study and the relevant achievements is presented in this paper.IntroductionZinc is a valuable commodity in the marketplace and can be recycled again and again and still maintain its physical and chemical properties. Zinc recycling offers both environmental and economic benefits such as reducing volumes of material that end up in landfills, saving energy by reducing the need for mining and smelting, and relieving environmental impact on the land and water, and conserving zinc ore [1].The supply of zinc able to be re-processed will be increasing from year to year according to secondary materials enter the recycling stream, and as a result, more recycled zinc will become available in the market. Thus, some existing zinc refineries are implementing an annexed treatment line to process secondary oxides in conjunction with primary zinc concentrates [2].The galvanized steel scrap is normally recycled in electric arc furnaces or in basic oxygen furnaces, which generates a large tonnage of zinc-bearing flue dusts (EAFD). Around one million ton EAFD is yearly produced at the USA and the EU, respectively. The flue dusts are treated commercially by pyrometallurgical ways such as waelz kilns, electrothermic furnaces, etc, to yield secondary zinc oxides that can not be processed directly to render high quality zinc because of the hazardous impurities and halogens content [3]."

Scrap recycling has become an increasingly important source of metal units for the aluminum industry during the past 25 years. Aluminum scrap from the manufacture and recycling of cans, automobiles, buildings and other products has created an industry that melts these products and delivers the metal in molten or sow form to companies that make cast parts or fabricated products This rapidly developing recycling industry has contributed a large number of severe (Force 3) molten aluminum explosions (25) with associated fatalities (19) to the Aluminum Association data accumulated during the past nineteen years. The explosions that occurred in recyclers plants represent 17% of the total explosions, 33% of the Force 3 explosions and 37% of the fatalities reported. These explosions can be prevented! This paper will identify causes of these explosions and procedures that can be used to prevent them.

My remarks are directed at relating some of the mineralogical approaches mentioned in the preceding presentations to emerging energy issues. The assembling of this symposium on process mineralogy attests to the growing concern for energy development from the non-petroleum mineral fuels and the unconventional petroleum fuels. A report in 1979, prepared under the auspices of the National Research Council/National Academy, of Sciences, was published in two parts and dealt with "Redistribution of Accessory Elements in Mining and Mineral Processing." This report rather comprehensively considers broad aspects of minerals associated with the solid fuels considered in this symposium and focuses attention on some problems of process mineralogy relative to these fuels. Papers have dealt with coal, oil shale, tar sands, and uranium minerals. Problems associated with mining, processing, and use of these materials have significant differences, but also have some factors in common relative to the subject of this symposium.

In order to decrease the voltage required for electrorefining, a recessed electrode cell has been developed in which the anode and cathode have recesses machined into their faces. The anode and cathode plates are separated by a thin refractory cloth and the cell is filled with fused salt. Bismuth containing 10 to 90 % lead with copper and silver as minor impurities has been electrorefmed at a current density of 10,000 to 20,000 Am-2. The cell voltage was between 285 and 635 millivolts and the bismuth was refined to a purity of 99.9 %. Flow patterns were observed in a room temperature model of the recessed channel cell using water and mercury to simulate molten metal and the fused salt electrolyte. The flow in the electrode recesses is characterized by discrete droplets when the liquid flow rate is low and thin streams and rivulets at higher flow rates.

Over the past 15 years, numerous pressure oxidation plants for pretreatment of gold ores and concentrates have been installed throughout the world. While this technology is now established, it suffers in terms of the complex engineering and operational characteristics inherent in utilization of high temperatures (i.e. up to 225oC) and high pressures (i.e. > 3000 kPag). This paper outlines the application of an industrially proven pressure leaching methodology utilizing nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching and alkaline sulfide gold leaching. As such, it stands as an economic and engineering advancement in pressure leaching and non-cyanide treatment of gold ores and concentrates. In particular, the technology offers significant technical and economic advantages over traditional pressure oxidation and cyanide gold recovery in the treatment of gold bearing chalcopyrite ores and concentrates. An example of this will application will be delineated in this paper.

"Viceroy Resource Corporation of Vancouver, B.C., has recently developed and brought into production the Brewery Creek Mine, an open-pit heap leach gold mine, located 55km east of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 15.2 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 22 tonnes (707,315 oz) of gold. Ore processing employs the heap leach technology using run-of-mine ore. Highlights of 1996 activity included construction of a 158,000 m2 of leach pad, placing 1.9 million tonnes of ore at a grade of 1. 46 gpt to the leach pad, construction and successful commissioning of the ADR plant, and pouring of the first gold bar on November 15th.Permitting of this mine has drawn significant attention because of the innovated heap leach technology; although this technology has been proven in other jurisdictions, it has not been used at such extreme northern sites where winter temperatures routinely reach -45°C for extended periods.ABSTRACT ONLY"

Sodium is added to aluminum-silicon eutectic alloys to modify the structure. The ideal amount is about 100 ppm but due to the fact that sodium is lighter than aluminum and can float to the surface where it bums, oxidizes ad volatilizes, a far greater amount is usually added. Furthermore, as the sodium is continually lost from the alloy the optimum amount is only present for a limited time. The net result is a process which is hard to control, produces fumes and a considerable amount of dross. It is shown that by electrochemically titrating sodium through a tube of sodium beta alumina electrolyte that the sodium can be added continuously in a controlled way. As the sodium is added to the bulk of the aluminum, there is no sodium on the surface of the alloy so that little surface oxidation occurs, and no fumes and dross are produced. This leads to an improved product and working conditions.

This paper describes a simplified numerical model which is used to study the skull formation of liquid metal on a rapidly rotating disc in centrifugal atomisation. The skull formation is one of the problems limiting the wide use of centrifugal atomisation. The enlarging skull on the atomising disc reduces the yield of metal powder produced and produces a resistance to the centrifugal force which worsens the quality of the powder. It is costly and often difficult to study the flow behaviour by experiments due to the complex heat transfer and phase transformation during the processing. Computer modelling is therefore a powerful tool for mechanistic understanding of centrifugal atomisation. This paper investigates the flow pattern of the melt on the rotating disc as a function of initial temperature, melt flow rate and disc rotation speed as well as the physical properties of the melt, such as density, surface tension and viscosity using the commercial package Flow-3D. We have about 200,000 tons/year of dross residue produced after the collection of aluminum from the dross generated during the aluminum remelting process. 130,000 tons of the dross residue is used as a steel deoxidant or a cement material, and the remaining 70,000 tons is abolished and buried in the ground at authorized places. The dross residue is increasing along with the increase in the aluminum production. This situation will grow more serious with a large amount of aluminum window sashes which have been mass-produced since 60's and will return before long as scraps. Our effort is being directed to the development of technologies which enable the dross residue to be recycled and reused for some purposes such as road aggregates, refractories and others, in such a way as to comply with the social requirement which gives prfority to the recycling industry, as well as to the environmental preservation.

Itronics Inc., through its wholly owned subsidiary Itronics Metallurgical, Inc. (IMI), has successfully developed technology that allows it to be fully integrated as a photochemical recycler. IMI is now using this technology to expand its regional operation, which collects used photographic chemicals, chemically removes 99.997% of the silver and uses the residual to make a line of high quality liquid multinutrient liquid fertilizer products. Elevated silver discharges from the Reno-Sparks sewage treatment facility, that were traced back to incoming waste photographic chemicals and which were seriously impacting the sensitive fishery, provided the impetus for this project. This paper is updated from a paper presented at the Twenty-Second International Precious Metals Conference Toronto, Ontario, Canada in June 1998. It presents an overview of the scope of the problem solved by the technology, some of the permitting and development issues, and some of the specific fertilization formulations that are now being marketed.

The distribution behavior of cobalt, gold, and silver in nickel sulfide smelting was investigated between 1250-1300 °C under inert gas atmosphere. The distribution coefficients of these elements between nickel-copper-iron matte and silica-saturated iron silicate slag were determined as a function of matte and slag compositions. The effect of slag additives such as CaO, MgO, and Al2O3 on the solubility of cobalt, gold, and silver in slag was also investigated. It was observed that the distribution coefficients of these &nor elements were strongly dependent on matte grade. For cobalt and silver, the distribution coefficients decreased as the matte grade increased. However, the distribution coefficients of gold increased as the matte grade increased. The solubility of these minor elements in iron silicate slag was considerably decreased by the addition of basic oxides. Temperature dependence of the distribution of the minor elements will also be discussed.

Materials degradation due to corrosion is the major problem in power generation equipment, gas turbine, fluidized bed combustion, industrial waste incinerators etc. Some super alloys have been developed, but they are unable to have different properties to meet the demand of today?s industry. Therefore, a composite system of a base material providing the necessary mechanical strength with a protective surface layer different in structure and/or chemical composition can be an optimum choice in combining material properties. Thermal spray coating of the components before they put into service by suitable surfacing alloy and with suitable coating method can increase the life of these components several fold. Choice of right coating method and alloy for a particular application is extremely important to get the desired service life. The corrosion of some materials and the role of HVOF thermal spray coatings to counteract the same have been reviewed, with an aim to understand the phenomena along with various applications.

A full-scale test of chalcocite heap bioleaching was undertaken at Straits? Nifty Copper Operation. Straits worked closely with the CSIRO to investigate the chemical and biological changes over the life cycle of this chalcocite heap bioleach system. Results indicated nearly 80% copper recovery was achieved in just over 300 days. Significant changes in iron chemistry and microbiological activity were detected. Temperatures in the heap reached as high as 70 ºC during the time of maximal copper recovery rate. The dominant cultivatable bacterial strains were typical mesophilic bacteria, however, naturally occurring moderately thermophilic bacteria were detected by culture and culture independent molecular (PCR followed by denaturing gradient electrophoresis [DGGE]) and signature lipid methods. Signatures for the iron and sulfur-oxidising species Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Sulfobacillus spp., as well as the moderately thermophilic heterotroph Alicyclobacillus sp. were detected. Biomass was greatest in ?warm? but not ?hot? parts of the heap, and Hyperthermophilic Archaea were not detected.

Copper is rapidly being adopted by the semiconductor industry as the interconnect material of choice. The aqueous processing techniques used generate wastes such as spent electrolyte from electroplating, electroplating rinse water, copper solutions from removing copper from the back of the wafer and CMP waste streams. We are examining the use of chelating resins as a means of recovering copper from these streams within the processing plant, thereby allowing recycling of process water and minimizing hazardous waste disposal costs. We have examined the effect of model plating additives (and other organic complexing agents) on the efficacy of Dowex M4195. Although these might have had a significant effect, commonly used electroplating additives polyethylene glycol (PEG), benzotriazole (BTA), thiourea, glycine, and 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate (MPSA) each had little or no effect on the ability of the resin to chelate copper and remove it from solution. This suggests that Dowex M4195 could be useful for treating waste solutions of rather variable compositions.

"A ceramic body traditionally used to produce bricks and roofing tiles with kaolinitic clays was reformulated by the addition of sand and illitic clay. The objective was to obtain a ceramic product with better technological properties. Specimens were made by uniaxial press-molding at 20 MPa and then fired at 850, 900 and 950°C. The determined technological properties were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that both sand and illitic clay contribute to reduce the water absorption of the industrial clayey body. With respect to the flexural behavior, it was observed that the incorporation of sand decreased the mechanical strength. On the other hand, the illitic, incorporated in an amounts of 30 wt.% contributed to increase the mechanical strength of the clayey ceramic.IntroductionCeramic bodies industrially fabricated in the county of Campos, north of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, are still empirically elaborated using a mixture of local clays. These clays are predominantly kaolinitic mineral in nature, associated with high plasticity and elevated weight loss during the firing stage. Due to the excessive plasticity of the ceramic bodies, dimensional defects, which occur after drying and firing are usually obtained. Moreover, the kaolinitic nature and the presence of aluminum hydroxide (gibbsite) confer a refractory behavior to the local clays, which impairs sintering during the firing operation. In the case of clay ceramic products for civil construction, this results in greater porosity associated with elevated values of water absorption and low mechanical strength [1,2]. To avoid these problems, it is necessary to reformulate the ceramic body composition. The addition of both non-plastic materials to reduce plasticity and fluxes to condition the refractoriness is a possible alternative.As an alternative to reduce the plasticity of clayey ceramics sand, which is predominantly constituted of silica, can be used. The incorporation of sand in amounts of up to 25 wt.% to a clayey ceramic body used for roofing tiles fabrication was studied by Vieira et al. [3]. In that work specimens were prepared by extrusion and fired at 850°C. The results indicated that in the pre-firing stages the sand improved the workability of the investigated clayey ceramic body and facilitates the drying stage. It was also observed that the incorporated sand significantly improved the physical and mechanical properties of the clayey ceramic after firing. On the other hand, the apport of flux oxides could be done by the use of illitic clays that have a higher amount of alkaline oxides in comparison with the kaolinitics clays."

Bulong remains the only hydrometallurgical process plant in the world that recovers nickel and cobalt directly from high pressure acid leach (HPAL) laterite leach liquors without need for precipitation of an intermediate product (e.g. sulphide, hydroxide or carbonate). Direct solvent extraction (DSX) of both nickel and cobalt in combination with electrowinning of nickel has been operation at Bulong since early 1999. Focus in the first years has been on ramp-up and resolution of commissioning problems. More recently the focus has been on de-bottlenecking and process optimisation. A number of significant process problems have been resolved, the most difficult being the formation of gypsum in the nickel solvent extraction circuit. Sound control of process chemistry is essential to ensure the production of high quality nickel and cobalt products at the lowest possible cost. This paper describes the numerous changes and enhancements to the process chemistry and plant equipment at Bulong and discusses the importance of ore leach chemistry on downstream impurity metal removal. Potential additional enhancements to further reduce unit costs are also presented.

"An on-line technique to measure the efficiency of decoating I delacquering processes is being developed by Alcan' s Arvida R & D Centre. Decoating processes are used to remove moisture and coatings from shredded coated material such as Used Beverage Containers (UBC) before melting. Complete removal has been demonstrated to maximize metal recovery. Quantifying the weight of carbon and organic residue adhering to the shred surfaces is very difficult to measure directly, as the material can be highly folded. The technique developed indirectly measures the residue remaining by analysing the concentration of CO evolved in the decoater end zone exhaust gas.A commercial CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) incorporating an infrared type CO gas analyser was modified for on-line process exhaust gas analysis. Both pilot and plant trials had demonstrated that the CO concentration measured was inversely proportional to the efficiency of the organic removal achieved. As the quality of coated purchased scrap can be highly variable in moisture and organic content, continuous measurement should permit adjusting the feed rate and other decoater process parameters to the quality of decoating required."

In the early 1940's, the Caron ammonia ? ammonia carbonate leach process was used to produce nickel from Mayari ores at the Nicaro plant in Oriente Province, Cuba. While plant operation was generally successful, it was not broadly economical and was shut down. The plant was later restarted in the 1950's and a number of investigations initiated to resolve the more serious operational and performance issues. Processing steps studied included iron reduction (chemistry ? nickel and iron, reductant, equipment), ore variability (homogeneity and consistency of mineral concentrations, serpentine vs. laterite), leach solution strength, nickel recovery (temperature ? reduction and leaching, reoxidation) and a variety of other topics. These studies and their findings will be discussed. Caron himself obtained good results on these ores in the laboratory. They could not be duplicated in the field, the reasons for which will be reviewed. (Note: the ore looked like garden dirt; charcoal made from palm trees was one of the reductants attempted; and ammonia was the leach solution. Mixing the three, so to speak, was to yield nickel.)

One of the preferred methods for the recovery of gold from refractory gold ores and concentrates involves pressure oxidation in acidic solutions. The main refractory gold-containing minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite and there is evidence that the presence of even small amounts of chloride can inhibit the oxidation of these minerals and also substantially reduce the recovery of gold. In this paper, the results of a study of the anodic (oxidation) and cathodic (reduction) behaviour of pyrite electrodes in acidic sulfate solutions containing ferric ions at different chloride concentrations and temperatures up to 200oC and pressures of 2000KPa are presented. The electrochemical studies have been complemented by pressure oxidation experiments on a refractory gold concentrate. Results have shown that, as the chloride concentration increases, the anodic reactivity of pyrite is largely unaffected but the rate of the cathodic reduction of iron(III) decreases. The rate of oxidation of a sulfide concentrate and the recovery of gold by cyanidation of the residues decreases at high concentrations of chloride.
