Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. INTRODUCTION Statistical analysis of results obtained by workers survey is very often limited to the determination of the collective dose and mean annual values. This information is not sufficent by itself for radiation protection purposes since the cumulative exposure of a worker during his working life is not taken into account. A more complete analysis would be obtained by considering both: [ ] These two notions are different. The former depends on the evolution of the protection with time and is related to annual limits (ICRP, 1977 and ICRP,1977 a). The second depends mainly on the works performed during the period of survey, the interference of protection evolution is weakened. So it is useful to foresee how the individual average annual doses would be when considering survey periods of 5, 10 years, or more. STUDIED POPULATION In order to analyse the two previously mentionned notions it is necessary to follow up a well defined population of workers which is continuously exposed to the radiological hazards on a long enough period. The selected population is that of the workers of the French uranium mines always present during the 1971-1979 period (9 years). The number of individuals is 937. The radiological hazards are: 1. exposure to radon and short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation. The workers of the uranium mines are exposed to these radiological risks in different ways according to the work performed. It is therefore necessary to subdivide the population into more homogeneous groups with respect to the radiological risks. Three groups are considered: - Group 1 : 227 individuals whose radon and dust exposures are always nil - Group 2 : 449 individuals whose radon and (or) dust exposures are different from 0 every year - Group 3 : 261 individuals represent a mixed category. Some features of these groups are given in table 1. [ ] The 937 followed individuals represent approximatively the half of the whole population of the French uranium mines. Taking into account the procedure adopted to select the studied population, it appears clearly that this population is not representative of the whole miner population. DOSIMETRIC RECORDS Three risk indicators are considered .Individual annual exposures to radon and its shortlived daughters. They are determined by ambient monitoring based on radon concentration measurements and recording of the times elapsed in the various workplaces. For each worker the annual exposure is represented by the mean annual air concentration and is expressed as a fraction of the maximum annual concentration (MAC). Given the administrative arrangements and the effective state of equilibrium between radon and its daughters, the maximum annual concentration is practically equivalent to 1 Working Level = 2.08 x 10- 5 jm-3. (UNSCEAR, 1977). . Individual annual exposures to long-lived ore dust which are also expressed in fraction of the maximum annual concentration. . Individual annual doses of external irradiation (X and [y] rays) expressed in mSv (= 10-3 Sievert). Irradiation monitoring is based on use of individual film badges.

Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been an important source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incom- plete although gold production estimates for the South Pass- Atlantic City district range from a low of 2.0 Mg (70,000 oz) (Koschmann and Bergendal, 1968) to a high of 9.8 Mg (327,000 oz) (Hausel, 1980). From 1962 to 1983 iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt and production totaled more than 91 Mt (90 million It). The supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt occur in a tightly folded synform bounded by Late Archean granite and granodiorite. The youngest of the Archean successions has a reported Rb-Sr isochron age of 2.8 b.y. (Stuckess, et al., 1985). Metamorphism of the supracrustals increases towards the flanks of the belt and is amphibolite-grade enclosing a small island of greenschist facies rocks. The supracrustal sequence consists of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks that are divisible into four mappable units. The metasediments include metagraywacke, quartzite, pelitic schist, banded iron formation, metaconglomerate, and graphitic schist. Metavolcanics include metabasalt, meta-andesite, and ultramafic schist. These supracrustals have been intruded by mafic sills and dikes and tonalitic stocks and dikes. Two granite plutons and associated pegmatites intrude the supracrustals in the western portion of the belt, and the supracrustals exhibit both fault and intrusive contacts with granitic batholiths along the western and eastern margins. The northeastern flank of the Archean belt is unconformably over- lain by Paleozoic sediments, and the southern portion of the belt is onlaped by Tertiary sediments.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) operates the Betze-Post openpit and the Meikle and Rodeo underground mines. Because the majority of the orebody is located below the water table, mining at BGMI requires a significant dewatering program. BGMI has a comprehensive dewatering and water management system that experienced a peak dewatering rate of 4,400 L/s in the mid 1990s. Changes to the hydrologic/hydrogeologic system caused by the mine dewatering have been monitored by an extensive network of groundwater monitoring wells and surface water monitoring stations, which cover about 1,550 km2. In addition to the monitoring program, a new tool, called Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), has also been used to enhance the evaluation of changes. Finally, a groundwater flow model has been developed that successfully simulates and predicts aquifer responses in the mine area and region. The well-calibrated flow model has served as a reliable tool to develop dewatering and mining plans, and project post-closure hydrologic conditions in the region. This paper introduces the BGMI dewatering and water management system and the means used by BGMI to evaluate and anticipate hydrologic responses in the region. The water management and analysis system has been and continues to be an integral part of managing ongoing operations, planning and pricing out future activities and evaluating the long-term effects of mine water handling.

A number of private companies and universities have developed computer programs which can be used to simulate surface coal mining by dragline. In this paper, we briefly discuss the concept of computer simulation, compare these computer programs with each other, describe the major changes required to convert these programs to an IBM computer system, and analyze their sensitivity to inaccurate input data. We also present a summary of the required data input for each program, core storage requirements, and output results. Sources for obtaining these programs and their documentation are listed at the end of the paper.

With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials, and consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium (V). Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, Xray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 weight percent V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples, calcium carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the Vbearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

The Dallas Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel is an 8.04 km (5 mile) tunnel that will provide 100-year flood protection for impacted neighborhoods in the east Dallas area. “Big Tex” is a main beam gripper TBM capable of changing diameters in mid-tunnel to excavate 2.83 km (9,290 ft) of 11.45 m (37.58 ft) diameter tunnel and 5.21 km (17,095 LF) of 9.93 m (32.58 ft) diameter tunnel. Construction began in April 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in 2024. This paper will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during assembly and re-assembly, start-up and mining with “Big Tex.”

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease in head with increasing volume while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point But wait a minute: Isn't head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn't fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves -pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values -and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at \\tIich the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation net\wrk. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

One can hardly discuss coal pneumoconiosis unless it is placed in the context of the total pneumoconiosis problem in the mining industry. However, it might be well if first we defined a few terms, since it has been my experience that the use of the word pneumoconiosis frequently causes con- fusion among those who are not familiar with the term. Pneumoconiosis comes from two Greek words meaning lung and dust. Hence, the word pneumoconiosis simply means dusty lung, or dust on the lung. There are many forms of the disease, some of which are disabling and some are not. Among the many dusts which cause pneumoconiosis might be included silica, asbestos, coal, talc, iron ore, and many other mineral dusts. Silicosis is a specific form of pneumoconiosis. It is caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of silicon dioxide in the form of crystalline quartz. The disease is manifested by nodulation of the lungs which is apparent on an X-ray film. Continued exposure to silicon dioxide causes the nodules to grow and ultimately large areas of the lung become scar tissue which pre- vents the lung from performing its physiologic function. This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. It is a great pleasure for me to speak-before such a prestigious group as the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. The substance of my talk today is the handling of coal and petroleum coke: their characteristics and environmental problems, and how we were able to correct the problems, prescribe the cure and enjoy the benefits. When coke first became a by-product derived from the oil refineries everyone would have been very happy if someone had offered to take this pro- duct off their hands. Unfortunately, there was no market at that time, and no one seemed interested. Soon thereafter, it became a sellable product and began to be shipped to many countries in the world. This was when all of the pollution problems began. I will be talking briefly about some of these problems and showing a short film on this subject afterwards.

INTRODUCTION Today, raise drilling (boring) has become the stan¬dard method of raising throughout the Western world. It is estimated that the majority of raise footage com¬pleted in 1977 was accomplished by the raise drilling method. Extensive replacement of the drill and shoot system by mechanized raise drilling has occurred be¬cause users have recognized one or more of the follow¬ing advantages. In a direct cost per meter comparison, mechanized raise drilling is economically more attractive than drilling and shooting. Mechanized raise drilling offers improved personnel safety over the drilling and shooting method. Mechanized raise drilling is a faster and more predictable method for excavation than is drilling and shooting. The raise cost per unit of length becomes less as the raise length increases, offering greater flexibility in the overall design of mines. Mechanized raise drilling provides a substantial reduction in labor requirements. 6) Mechanized raise drilling improves the working environment. 7) Mechanized raise drilling improves the rock in¬tegrity of round, unblasted raises. Increasing acceptance of the raise drilling technique is enhanced by continuing equipment development. Today, a wide range of machines and capabilities is available, machine drive systems have been improved, reliability has been increased, and cutter technology is being improved quite rapidly. Table 1 lists the four major manufacturers of raise drilling machines, cutters, and reamers, together with the approximate number of machines that each company had in operation at the end of 1977. Although Reed and Smith are major suppliers of reamers and cutters, they do not manufacture the drilling machines. Four or five other relatively minor suppliers have built machines, reamers, and cutters for raise drilling, but they did not have a substantial num¬ber of machines in the field at the end of 1977. MACHINES FOR MECHANIZED RAISE DRILLING There are three principal arrangements for making machine-bored raises. They include the use of standard raise drills, reversible raise drills, and blind-hole or box¬hole raise drills. Standard Raise Drills The standard raise drilling machine is set up on one mine level or on the surface, and a pilot hole is drilled from that level or surface to a level below. When the pilot hole has been drilled, the raise then is reamed back from the lower level to the upper level or the surface. This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 1. Reversible Raise Drills The reversible raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a pilot hole is drilled up¬ward to a higher level. The raise then is reamed back from the upper level to the lower level. This arrange¬ment is illustrated in Fig. 2. The machines used for this type of raise drilling normally are capable of being used as standard raise drills. Blind-Hole or Boxhole Raise Drills The blind-hole or boxhole raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a full diameter raise is bored to a higher level without the use of a pilot hole. This type of machine is illustrated in Fig. 3. Drill Recommendations If access to upper and lower mine levels is equal, the standard raise drill should be used. The complexity of the equipment and associated handling procedures for boxhole drilling far outweigh any mechanical advantage or reduction in the number of operations, provided that access to an upper level is available. If there is good access to a lower level but only limited access to an upper level, the use of a reversible raise drill should be considered. If there is no access to an upper level, a blind-hole or boxhole raise drill is the only practical mechanized system. MACHINE SELECTION There are six major considerations in selecting a machine for raise drilling. These include operating range, cutter loading, machine structure and main¬tenance, drill string configuration, drive system, and automated controls. Operating Range As shown in Table 2 and Figs. 4 through 6, raise drilling machines are available for a wide range of hole sizes. Standard raise drill ratings range from raises of 0.9 m (3 ft) diam and 120 m (400 ft) length up to raises of 3.5 m (12 ft) diam and 900 m (3000 ft) length. Boxhole raise drilling machines are available for raises ranging from 0.9 m (3 ft) to 2 m (6 ft) diam with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Table 2 lists, among other criteria, the torque and thrust of typical machines; torque and thrust are the main criteria for analyzing the capacity of a machine. The raise sizes shown in Table 2 assume a condition of medium hard to hard rock formations and optimum cutter loading. The recommended raise size for a given machine can be exceeded when raising softer rock formations or when the operator is willing to accept a lower level of performance; the performance is related directly to the 1093

The hydrometallurgy review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. 1992 was not a banner year for hydrometallurgical installations or new hydrometallurgical developments. Installation of copper solvent extraction/electrowinning circuits were under construction or began operation in Nevada (Yerrington ), Arizona (SilverBell), Chile (Copiapo and Escondida), Peru (Toquepala and Cuayone) and Australia (Girilambone). These installations will produce more than 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of cathode copper. Several new heap leach gold facilities using conventional technologies were announced or were put into operation. New technologies undergoing widespread testing include biological oxidation of low-grade ores in a heap leach mode and evaluation of new agglomerating agents.

The 13 km (8 mile) long Riverside Badlands Tunnel is planned for construction starting in 1998. Extensive geotechnical investigations indicate that the 3.7 m (12 ft) finished diameter tunnel will be excavated through soft ground, weak sedimentary rocks, and heavily fractured metamorphic rocks. Nearly 80 percent of the tunnel will be excavated beneath the groundwater level. Tunneling conditions are expected to range from raveling and over-stressed in the sedimentary rocks, to blocky and seamy/crushed with some squeezing in the metamorphic rocks. Two alluvium reaches will require dewatering. The variable and interspersed ground conditions are expected to be a key factor in selection of tunneling methods, equipment, and initial support.

Five coals blended at a Midwestern United States power station were subjected to detailed analysis of their Hardgrove grindability. The coals, representing four distinct coal beds, are a low-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal (Pike County, Kentucky); a medium-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Pittsburgh coal (southwestern Pennsylvania); a low-sulfur, subbituminous coal from the northern Powder River Basin (Montana); and two low-sulfur, subbituminous Wyodak coals from two different mines located in the eastern Powder River Basin (Campbell County, Wyoming). All samples that were processed in the Hardgrove grindability tests were also analyzed for their maceral and microlithotype content. The high-vitrinite Pittsburgh coal and the relatively petrographically complex Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal exhibited different grindability behavior. The petrographic compositions of the Pittsburgh raw feed, the 16 x 30-mesh fraction (HG! test fraction) and the -30-mesh fraction (HGI test reject) are similar, suggesting that the HGI test fraction typifies the whole feed. The eastern Kentucky test sample is not as representative of the whole feed, with the HGI test fraction having lower vitrinite amounts than the rejected -30-mesh fraction. The Powder River Basin coals are high in vitrinite content and show behavior similar to the Pittsburgh coal.

The flotation behavior of minerals depends on the balance between hydrophobic and hydrophilic species present at the surface of the minerals. The direct characterization of the interfacial products formed by the interaction of water and an aqueous solution of amyl xanthate with chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and tennantite (the two former contain antimony and arsenic) were carried out by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared (IR) reflection spectroscopy. The experimental data collected from in-situ (IR ATR) and ex-situ (XPS, IR External Reflection) measurements have let us determine the types of the adsorption products and to propose mechanisms of interaction between the aqueous solution of surfactant and surface of the investigated minerals. It is shown that two major processes take place at the mineral interfaces: (i) the interaction with water and oxygen resulting in the formation of the oxidation products which are mainly hydrophilic (but also a hydrophobic product was found), and (ii) the adsorption of xanthate producing different types of hydrophobic surface products. The results obtained show differences in the composition of the outermost atomic layers of the investigated minerals which obviously will produce differences in the flotation behavior of these minerals. This work forms a good fundamental basis for a better separation between copper minerals containing arsenic and antimony, and chalcopyrite.

The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease with increasing volume, while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. However, as every ventilation instructor knows, the fact that head loss is a negative number (debit) and fan head is an energy addition (credit) is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension since the curves seem to reflect the opposite. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves- pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values - and still obtain the correct operating point. Adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure. With the standard approach, it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

The mining industry continues to be under expanded scrutiny in the health and safety arena, both from federal regulators and the media. While this paper will briefly discuss how enforcement activity, both with citations issued and the size of penalties proposed, the primary focus will be practical suggestions to deal with some key, high-risk areas for a mine operator which could have substantial impact, both in terms of liability and mine operations. It goes without saying that all mine operators need to continue compliance programs they have in place with careful ongoing evaluation of those plans for areas of improvement. The focus here will not be compliance as such, but rather steps to take and procedures to have in place to try to minimize risks in the face of the potential for more significant liability. Thus, our focus will be procedures to respond to unwarrantable failure citations, immediately reportable accidents, and to deal with potential pattern of violation issues.1
