"Spent auto-catalyst is a potential secondary resource because of the higher concentration of valuable platinum group metals (PGMs) as compared to the primary ores. Despite the well-developed commercially tenable technologies, further researches are being carried out to extract the PGMs with high efficiency. It is however, critical in this context to reuse not only the PGMs but also other metals contained in the spent auto-catalyst particularly that of the cordierite substrate such as aluminum, magnesium and cerium oxide (CeO2). This is important in view of the fact that no recycling process has ever stressed upon the recovery of cordierite substrate and CeO2 since the main target metals are mostly the PGMs. In this study, a new hydrometallurgical approach has been proposed in order to recover the PGMs as well as cerium oxide and materials from the cordierite substrate by using sodium hydroxide roasting followed by sulfuric acid dissolution. Under the optimal conditions for roasting at above 600°C, and weight ratio of sample to NaOH of 1:1 for 60 min, the cordierite was converted to the soluble phases. Dissolution of the roasting products using H2SO4 solution (1M) at 25°C for 60 min enriched the PGMs and Cerium oxide contents in the residue. Subsequently, PGMs in solution after dissolution can be cemented using Al and Cerium oxide in residue can be recovered by hot digestion using concentrated H2SO4.. INTRODUCTION Auto-catalyst can significantly control the gaseous emission of automobiles, and has been considered as a potential secondary source of Platinum group metals (PGMs) after being decommissioned from the vehicles. The PGMs demand is continuously increasing to comply with the growing vehicle population and the tightening of emission standards all over the world; meanwhile the natural resources of these metals is facing the threat of depletion. Therefore, it is crucial to progressively substitute with an alternate resource to supply PGMs other than that of the primary ores. Nowadays, vehicular transportations worldwide are totally installed with the auto-catalysts. However, they should be replaced after reaching their service life. If there is no recycling of such resources, huge amount of valuable metals will be wasted. The quantity of PGMs that can be recovered from the spent auto-catalyst depends on the size of car, which averages to 1-2 grams for small cars and 12-15 grams for the big truck; this is significantly higher than that of the primary ores containing 2-10 grams PGMs per ton. Consequently, the recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst becomes extremely favorable as compared to the primary resources due to higher concentration of PGMs, with much lower and simpler processing steps, and lesser pollution."

The construction of a major sewerage scheme requiring 15.3 km of 5.5m excavated diameter tunnel in basalt, mixed and soft ground has been undertaken by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. A double shielded Tunnel Boring Machine was selected to excavate 13.7 km of basalt and mixed ground. Advanced methods for recording operational data on the TBM were introduced. Progress to date has shown that the TBM can excavate rock very effectively with a best weekly production of 178.8m; soft ground has been encountered and successfully handled.

The theoretical relations between the strain and stress Mohr circles make it possible to establish a relation between the internal friction angle [ ] and the Poisson's ratio (v) of rocks. The internal friction angle is related to the Poisson's ratio as Sin [-] = (1 - v)/(l + v). This relation gives lower friction angle values than the triaxial Mohr envelopes and higher values than those given by surface sliding friction tests.

This paper presents design considerations for the major underground elements of the pending BCRUA Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System Project. These elements include two Lake Taps; an 8,800 LF, minimum 10-ft OD intake tunnel; a suction chamber with 6 Pump Shafts; a 30-ft diameter, 300-ft deep Main Shaft; a 2,600 LF Transmission Tunnel with 78-inch steel liner; and a 130-ft deep shaft on the Transmission Tunnel. The tunnels and shafts will be excavated through the Glen Rose limestone. The design development included consideration for technical requirements, easements, third party commitments, previous local project experience, and constructability based on contractor outreach.

Previous applications for using waste rock for backfilling in South African gold mines were reviewed and it was found that in many cases the mechanical equipment selected and the design philosophy applied did not meet the requirements. A more simplified system configuration is proposed, which allows the equipment to be relocated as mining progresses. Innovative high-intensity grinding and dense-phase pumping technology are proposed to provide a low-porosity backfill with a particle top size of 5 mm to 8 mm. According to recent rock mechanics modeling work, this comminuted waste backfill material can provide a good compromise between underground support characteristics and reliable hydraulic transportation behavior.

The amount of toxic fumes produced during blasting operation depends on the types of explosives used, product formulation, degree of confinement, conditions of use, and reactivity of the explosives with the host rock. Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) is still the explosive of choice due to its lower price and ease of use/loading. If not properly monitored and controlled, toxic fumes produced from blasting operations can have serious health hazards [1]. This paper presents a novel technique developed to track trapped fumes during a development blasting.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Amax Coal Co. studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipeline of 15 to 51 cm-diam (6-20 in.-diam), monitoring vibration, strain and pressure. Unlike tests of small blasts simulating construction, these were up to 1 t (2200lbs) per delay in 31-cm (12-in.) blastholes. Worst-case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/sec (5 in./s) blasting vibrations produced strains about one fourth that of pressurization and 10% to 18% of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m (50 ft), which produced vibrations over 60 cm/sec (24 in./s).

An experimental investigation of the dissolution of three base-metal sulfide minerals, namely, CuFeS2, ZnS and PbS, in hydrochloric acid medium in the presence of manganese dioxide is reported. Polarization measurements and leaching studies were employed in the study. Dissolution occurred in the following three ways: by the cyclic action of the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couple, by galvanic interaction between Mn02 and the sulfide minerals, and because of chlorine evolution from the system. The later two routes were found more effective at higher HCI levels. PbS appeared to be oxidized easily, whereas CuFeS2 was the most difficult to dissolve. ZnS dissolution fell in between PbS and CuFeS2.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of different shapes and distribution densities of mineral grains in coal on failure mechanics using the numerical software 3DEC. The main aim of this study was to identify possible failure mechanisms influenced by mineral habit and frequency in coal. Exploring differences in failure mechanics associated with the mineral grains helped to determine the role of mineral character as a possible contributor to characterize burst-prone coals. To achieve the goal of this study, a series of numerical specimens were prepared in the 3DEC model as follows: first, the 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the DFNs (Discrete Fracture Networks) technique was performed to explicitly generate the discontinuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) in the numerical specimens based on the results of laboratory analyses. Then, the different realizations of mineral grains were embedded in the 3DEC model to simulate an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test to assess the influence of the mineralogical characteristics on the UCS.

Scale-up and simulation of flotation columns requires construction of mathematical models which employ, as a minimum, rate constants for quantifying particle recovery in the collection zone as well as split factors for quantifying froth zone performance. To date, measurement of these rate parameters has proven to be difficult, due to the interdependent nature of the collection and froth zones. This paper describes a technique for making these measurements. The method requires recovery data from two modes of operation: countercurrent and cocurrent. In cocurrent flow slurry is fed at the bottom of the column and tailings are withdrawn a short distance below the froth interface. Countercurrent mode is conventional operation. The critical difference is that particles which are dropped out of the froth in cocurrent mode are immediately lost to tailings, while in countercurrent mode the particles are subjected to recollection. Fitting of the measured recoveries to the equations that describe flotation in the two modes yields rate constant or recovery values for both the collection and the froth zones.

This case study presents successful conversions of two conventional slurry tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to filtered tailings storage facilities in Durango, Mexico, for two mining operations with production rates ranging from 1,200 to 4,500 t/d (1,320 to 4,960 stpd). In both cases, the decision to make the conversion was driven by: • Ability to increase the storage capacity via stacking of filtered tailings. • Reduction of the tailings’ impacted footprint. • Mitigation of long-term geotechnical stability risks. • Alleviation of environmental risks by reducing tailings water as a source of pollutants, and a net reduction in process make-up water demand. The case studies can be divided in two classes: class 1 facilities, where slurry tailings are loaded almost immediately with filtered tailings because of storage area limitations; and class 2 facilities, where the conversion is immediate but the available area allows gradual or eventual loading of the previously stored slurry tailings. The condition where slurry tailings must be loaded almost immediately represents the greatest engineering challenge because of the geotechnical risks of instability and liquefaction (under both static and dynamic loads). Regardless of whether these facilities are converted immediately or eventually, they all require monitoring of pore water pressure conditions within the slurry tailings being loaded as the depth of placement of the filtered tailings above the slurry tailings increases. Additionally, where loading rate exceeds the pore pressure dissipation rate, tailings dewatering may be required to increase the rate of consolidation and strength and mitigate the risks of foundation failure.

This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. Production commenced in Mississippi during the latter part of 1938 at Pontotoc. The growth and development of the bentonite industry in the southern United States owes its beginning to three events. The era of low-seam mining with continuous haulage has been here for quite some time. Typical tonnages in companies such as Terry Glenn Coal are currently averaging 405 tonnes per shift in .8m coal. JoAnn Coal has averaged 453.6 tonnes per shift in .775m to .825m coal for the past four years. John Chaney of Chaney Coal has averaged 297 tonnes per shift in .6m to .65m coal. There are many other mines that are experiencing similar success and with maintenance costs that are averaging $.10 to $.40 per tonne. These figures have been documented and can be verified by the operators.

Outokumpu introduced Flash Flotation in the early l 980's for the recovery of floatable material from grinding circuits. The devel­opment came as a result of surveys made in the company's own concentrators, initiated to find ways of improving recoveries with increasingly complex and lower grade feeds. Hydrocyclones make a separation on the basis of particle size and mass, resulting in the "over collection" of fine grained, high S.G. particles. Minerals such as pentlandite, galena and gold are easily caught in the circulating load around the mill until they are overground and rendered more difficult to collect. In the case of downstream flotation this may simply involve a reduction in the rate coefficient due to the finer sizes or, as is commonly experienced in gold operations, the mate­rial is slimed and coated onto non-floating gangue and is eventual­ly lost to tails. At the time of Outokumpu's plant surveys, it was a relatively common practice, particularly in Pb operations, to have a flotation section fed directly from the secondaiy mill discharge. This is called unit flotation and certainly provided an improvement but very high wear rates and frequent sanding out of the cells was com­mon. The development of the SkimAir® Flash Flotation cell by Outokumpu provided a subtle but quite dramatic departure from the unit cell approach. Now it was possible to feed cyclone under­flow into a special purpose-built flotation machine and recover a final grade concentrate from the grinding circuit (see Figure I). The cell was designed to handle the coarse circulating load, per­mitting the coarsest fractions to be short-circuited back to the mill and retain the floatable sizes for a nominal time of 30 seconds to several minutes. The short retention time was possible largely due to the relatively clean content of the cyclone underflow stream. This means that the fine gangue is not present except in small quan­tities and most of the fine to mid-size paiiicles are higher S.G. and more likely represent valuable mineral. This condition provides for very high rate coefficients. Typical operations would recover 40-60% of the valuable mineral in this fashion and improvements in recovery were typically from 2-5% for sulphide minerals to the 5-20% range for gold and silver.

A B S T R A C T The Los Pijiguaos bauxite is one of the largest accumulations of trihydrate alumina ore recently discovered; it is a plateau type, with no overburden, relatively soft tertiary quartz-bearing bauxite developed on a pre-Cambrian Rapakivi Granite batholith. The deposits are found in the northwestern rim of the Guiana Shield, State of Bolivar, Venezuela, and were discovered in 1976 after a grass-roots exploration campaign. Target areas were mainly selected on the basis of geological and geo¬morpholigcal criteria, guided by correlation with known deposits elsewhere in the Guiana Shield. The vertical. lateritic profile consists of an upper concretionary zone, followed by a mottled zone, a palid zone and finally the weathered rock merging into fresh granite. The upper concretionary zone displays a cellular, pisolitic or spongy texture and contains the following minerals: gibbsite (60-90%),quartz (5-10%), hematite (5-10%), goethite (under 5%), boehmite (traces), kaolinite (traces). The gibbsite content decreases sharply downward from the lower limit of the concretionary zone and the kaolinite and quartz content increases in the underlying mottled zone. The mottled and palid zones display a pseudo rapakivi texture and quartz, kaolinite and mica are the. essential minerals.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. All uranium mills are required to perform sampling and analysis for radioactive particulates in their gaseous effluent streams and in the environment. Pacific Northwest Laboratory was requested by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to provide technical assistance to them for their Uranium Mill Health Physics Appraisal Program. In conducting appraisals, air sampling methods used at NRC-licensed mills were reviewed and several deficiencies noted. This paper includes only environmental and effluent particulate sampling although much of the information is applicable to both in-plant and environmental samples. First, the components of a proper sampling program are discussed: program objectives, program design, sampler design, analyses, quality assurance, and data handling. Then the specific deficiencies, or the "pitfalls" from the first 8 mill appraisals are discussed. The first consideration in establishing an air sampling program is defining the objectives of the program. What is air sampling suppose to accomplish? Many of the deficiencies we have observed have resulted because the desired objectives were not clearly established in the minds of the radiation safety staff. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES An environmental air sampling program ought to fulfill the following seven objectives. The first is to: 1) [demonstrate regulatory compliance]. Although a goal of most programs, regulatory compliance, is not well understood. One has not only to comply with the conditions of the source materials licensee, but one must also demonstrate compliance with 10CFR20 and 40CFR190. For example, 10CFR20.106 states: "A licensee shall not possess, use, or transfer licensed material so as to release to an unrestricted area radioactive material in concentrations which exceed the limits specified in Appendix B, Table II of this part .... For purposes of this section, concentrations may be averaged over a period not greater than one year." Even if a mill's license does not require sampling at the site boundary of maximum concentration, a sample may be necessary to demonstrate compliance with 10CFR20. Most mill personnel are painfully familiar with 40CFRl90.10, which states: "Operations.... shall be conducted in such a manner as to provide reasonable assurance that: (a) The annual dose equivalent does not exceed 25 millirems to the whole body.... of any member of the public as the result of exposures to planned discharges of radioactive materials, radon and its daughters excepted... from uranium fuel cycle operations..." This means a licensee's sampling program must give "reasonable assurance" that the member of the general public receiving in the most exposure gets no more than 25 millirems per year. The sampling program necessary to provide that assurance may or may not be a license requirement. However, merely meeting the license requirements and the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessariarly ensure an adequate effluent and environmental air sampling program. The second objective of the environmental air sampling program, is to 2) [identify the source(s) of contaminants]. This will include not only the routine program, but special sampling for verification of sources and nonsources. Only after sampling can a mill operator be assured that roof vents, laboratory hoods, and other localized ventilation systems are not making a significant contribution to environmental releases. An environmental sampling program should also allow the mill operator to fulfill the third objective, to 3) [estimate exposures]. Even before 40CFR190, a sampling program should have provided the mill operator with the information necessary to determine the dose to the "fence post" person, or at least to determine if doses were well below the 10CFR20 limits previously allowed. The program should 4) [detect and measure unplanned releases]. If there is a fire, a scrubber failure, or if a drum of yellowcake breaks open, measured releases will almost always be lower than conservative estimates. Whether or not a system to provide sampling during accidents is needed is almost always a cost-benefit decision. In general, uranium operations do not sample just in case an accident may occur. Yet they may decide on continuous air sampling in lieu of intermittant sampling partially because of the potential for accidents. Another objective of air sampling is 5) [to provide information on the effectiveness of control systems]. This is always a concern with new or modified equipment and may dictate sampling frequency in other situations as well. For instance, if a small leak in a bag filter cannot be detected by other means, then more frequent stack sampling may be indicated. A routine effluent and environmental monitoring program should also fulfill the sixth objective,

"There is no fast way to add more than 6.4 km (4 miles) of track, most of it underground, to the Sound Transit Link Light Rail system in the Seattle, WA area. But increasingly busy traffic through a number of neighborhoods made it necessary. That’s the challenge a joint venture of several tunneling contractors faced when starting its portion of the $1.9-billion Northgate Link Extension in 2013, and the project is still keeping it busy three years later. Completion will mean just a 14-minute ride from Northgate to downtown for an extra 60,000 passengers by 2030. The transit lines will join 57 km (36 miles) of new and under-construction light rail lines running north, east and south from Seattle.Voters tired of long commute times approved the project, a key part of Seattle’s regional mass transit system, in 2008. The extension is part of a plan adopted by the Sound Transit board in 1996 to connect the region’s major activity centers. The Northgate project is meant to relieve one of the area’s most congested traffic areas by connecting the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods to existing routes including downtown Seattle and SeaTac airport.Sound Transit dedicated more than a quarter of the project’s estimated expense — $440 million -— to general contractor JCM Northlink LLC to handle the tunnel segment. JCM is a joint venture formed in 2013 between Jay Dee Contractors of Livonia, MI, Frank Coluccio Construction of Seattle, WA and Michels Corp. of Brownsville, WI. The contractors regularly collaborate on large-scale projects and brought experience working on a different section of the extension they completed in 2013.JCM project leaders knew immediately that the schedule would be demanding. They had to work around the clock six days a week to meet deadlines. The extension runs through highly populated areas, meaning contractors had to follow strict city noise restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Plus, supervisors needed to manage the scheduling of nearly 250 employees to keep work running smoothly.“We had eight different operations and four different subcontractors trying to work in one tunnel,” said Chris Wood, JCM site project superintendent. “It’s important that we keep work linear. That’s the biggest challenge: keeping a path in and out so you can pour concrete, keep electricians and carpenters going, and accomplish everything else.”"

Horace Tabor. No 19th century Colorado mining man is better known but, unfortunately, probably less understood. He is little appreciated for his significant contributions to the industry and the state. A century ago, Tabor was headline news. The legend today, however, has become so all pervasive and so interwoven with fact that the two are hard to separate. For example, he never told Baby Doe on his death bed to hang on to the Matchless mine. Yet this has emerged as staple Tabor fare. So much attention has been focused on his matrimonial triangle that it overshadows the man. Symbol of mining's reward Tabor traveled west in the 1859 Pike's Peak gold rush. In the next generation, he came to symbolize the rewards mining might lavish on an individual. The Leadville Daily Herald (Sept. 10, 1882) could write, without exaggeration, that "the extent which the mining industry of Colorado is under obligation to Tabor cannot be easily estimated - what he has done for Leadville and Denver is patent to all." It had not come easily, nor had Tabor started out a success. His early placer mining at Payne's Bar, near present-day Idaho Springs, CO, had turned no fortune. So in 1860, he, his wife Augusta, and son went south to Colorado City, then over Ute Pass and up the Arkansas Valley to Oro City. Arriving soon after the initial discovery, Tabor staked a good claim. With a sharp eye, he and Augusta broadened their base by establishing a store. Both mining and business would pay dividends in the following years. By the season's end, though, Oro City was already declining. Always on the lookout for a richer district, Tabor and his family moved the next year across the mountains to promising Buckskin Joe. The familiar pattern followed, with the store and post office being the center of their attention. Mining investment and management now replaced the earlier physical panning and sluice operating. Seven years later, the Tabors abandoned Buckskin Joe and returned to Oro City. It had moved up California Gulch to be near the district's best mine, the Printer Boy. Middle class was not enough Middle class respectability, plus a steady income, was the Tabor's by the 1870s; fine as far as it went. But it proved far from the fortune Horace had always been seeking. Oro City languished in the backwash of Colorado mining and Tabor seemed like many men who had drifted around the Territory following the ebb and flow of mining. His faithful wife Augusta had been a steady factor in the success the family achieved. She helped year after year to operate the store and post office. Not simply the happy-go-lucky individual he has often been portrayed, Tabor was a hard working businessman/mine owner. An R. G. Dun and Company agent evaluated him in 1876 "Net worth $23,200. Is a very shrewd businessman and not liable to lose money, has a good chance to make money as he had no competition." Leadville: Tabor's silverlined-fortune After all those years on the Colorado mining frontier, in 1877, Lake County's wealthiest and most respected merchant made another move. It was short in distance, only 4 km (2.5 miles) down California Gulch, then a little north to a new mining camp. This new camp, soon named Leadville, gave birth to the Tabor fortune and legend. Middle-aged (Horace was 47), the Tabors once more set up their general store and found themselves in the midst of the open¬ing of a new district. This time silver beckoned and not the gold that had brought them West 18 years before.
