Energy losses are important factors in a conveyor's performance and design. A significant energy loss due to belt sag within a conveyor system occurs when shearing motion between the bulk material particles occurs as the material moves along the belt. An initial analysis of these phenomena was performed using the discrete element method, which is a general-purpose numerical modeling technique for analyzing the mechanical behavior of particulate materials. The software used in this work was Overland Conveyor Company's, Chute Analyst Professional, a discrete element computer code designed specifically for analyzing bulk materials transportation and handling problems.

Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

Managing commercial risks associated with subsurface construction may be the greatest challenge the underground industry faces. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) was developed in the U.S. to help manage those commercial risks, and to stem increasing litigation in the industry. A guidelines document by the American Society of Civil Engineers was published in 1997 and was updated in 2007. This paper provides an historical perspective, overviews the main objectives of a GBR, presents issues and trends that instigated the need to update the 2007 publication, and describes the process that will lead to a new GBR guidelines publication in 2022

Potash is Canada's leading industrial mineral in terms of value of production, with 11.1 M tonnes of muriate of potash produced in 1992 for a value in excess of $1 billion U.S. Each tonne of potash produced generates about 2 tonnes of waste salt, together with slimes and brine. The disposal of these waste products, particularly the salt and slimes which are discharged on the surface, has recently become an environmental concern. This concern is forcing companies and regulatory authorities to review disposal practices. In New Brunswick, on Canada's east coast, Potash Company of America operates a mine at which 2 M tonnes of potash ore and 0.5 M tonnes of rock salt are mined each year. The mine is situated in an environmentally sensitive area, noted for its dairy farming and salmon angling. In such an area it was recognized that the storage of waste on surface would be unacceptable, and the mine was designed around this principle. Three main waste streams - salt, slimes, and brine - must be managed as an integral part of the mining system. Around 1.5 M tonnes of fine salt tailings from the milling process and the rock salt screening operation, are sent directly to the active cut-and-fill potash stopes to be used as backfill. Slimes and excess brine from the mill are piped underground as a slurry to be discharged into one of the basin shaped stopes created by mining of the rock salt. While the slimes settle out, the clarified brine is withdrawn from part of the stope to be pumped to surface as a feedstock for the evaporator - a process which recovers the contained potash values in the brine. By designing a system which integrates the mining, processing and disposal of all product streams, and by careful production planning, it has been shown that zero effluent potash mining is possible and points the way for the industry in the future.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

In 1994, Cyprus Twentymile Coal Company and Scandura formed a joint task force charged with the purpose of developing the highest rated fabric belt for underground longwall coal mining. This paper details the development efforts and concepts utilized by Cyprus and Scandura to meet the challenging demands of Twentymile Coal's East Mine District (EMD). The finished panel consisted of a 5,500 meter (18,000 feet) conveyor with 245 meter (800 feet) of drop over the first 3,660 meters (12,000 feet) and 245 meters (800 feet) of lift out-by over 1,830 meters (6,000 feet). The panel was designed with an operating capacity of 4,500 tph (5,000 stph) and 4.1 m/s (800 fpm) belt speed.

In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is less effective in recovering very fine (<15 μm) or very flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 μm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit, or when sulphide content is low. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm 3), especially from coarser gangue.

In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

The fundamental properties of the Bureau of Mines patented dielectric separator were studied to provide insight regarding its design and operating characteristics. Force equations for mineral particles were derived and evaluated experimentally. High dielectric mineral recovery was proportional to the calculated effective dielectric force volume that surrounded each drum electrode wire. Electrode spacing was the most sensitive design parameter, requiring less than 0.4-cm electrode spacing for a good separation. Operating characteristics and ore characteristics were investigated. With a dielectric constant difference as small as 2, good separations were made on a laboratory scale at energy consumption below 12 kw?h/mt.

This study investigated the performance of citric acid as lixiviant for cathode material from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Black mass containing 84.2 weight percent MNC (LiNi0.45Mn0.4Co0.15O2) and 15.8 weight percent LCO (LiCoO2) material was leached at solid-to-liquid ratios of 20, 50 and 100 g/L. Leaching with 1.5 M citric acid, 2 volume percent H2O2 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20 g/L at 95 °C extracted 90 percent Co, 95 percent Li, 94 percent Mn and 94 percent Ni within 20 min. At the highest solid-to-liquid ratio of 100 g/L with 1.5 M citric acid, 10 volume percent H2O2 and 95 °C, 84 percent Al, 84 percent Co, 87 percent Li, 86 percent Mn and 96 percent Ni were leached after 40 min, producing a leach solution containing 0.68 g/L Al, 20.0 g/L Co, 6.0 g/L Li, 13.6 g/L Mn and 19.3 g/L Ni. Using stepwise addition of H2O2, instead of initial bulk addition, did not significantly improve the leaching efficiency but did reduce the required leaching time. Temperature control of the reactor was also more manageable with stepwise addition of H2O2, and evolution of gas was less vigorous. It was observed that the leaching efficiencies of Co, Li and Mn decreased slightly at solid-to-liquid ratios of 50 and 100 g/L, while the leaching of Ni increased slightly. The solution leached at 20 g/L could be stored for six weeks without any spontaneous precipitation. However, solutions leached at 50 and 100 g/L showed changes in concentration after one month of storage, suggesting that processes that have a large material throughput and use high solid-to-liquid ratios around 100 g/L must ensure that the solutions are not stored for extended periods of time.

Slurry densities and holdup were measured for open circuit grinding tests in a laboratory overflow ball mill of 0.3 m diam by 0.6 m long, by emptying and drying after stoppage of the mill. Contrary to some other results in the literature, there was negligible variation of slurry level in the mill as a function of flow rate over a range of increase of flow rate of about 5 to I. However there was a gradual increase of solid holdup at higher flow rates because the slurry density in the mill increased. Equations are given for holdup and slurry density in the mill as a function of over flow diam, ball load, and feed slurry density. The average level of slurry necessary to give over flow was found to be much higher than that necessary to fill the mill to the overflow level at rest. The total level of balls and slurry was only increased slightly by ball loads higher than the overflow level. The overflow diam appeared to be the major controlling factor in determining the mill holdup.

In recent years, environmental considerations have played a prominent role in underground construction projects. The management and disposal of the muck produced by an EPB TBM is an important aspect of this topic. Soil conditioners with higher biodegradability and lower eco-toxicity have been specifically developed to comply with strict regulations in several countries around the world, with the goal of reducing the environmental impact of tunneling on soil, water, and living organisms. This paper highlights innovative sustainable soil conditioners and how they differ from traditional products. Additionally, environmental considerations for TBM projects around the world and in North America will be examined.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process nominal 1.2 x 0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm. Definitions and Terminology Classification is defined within this section as the separation of solid particles into size or weight fractions or classes by differential settling through a fluid. It is usually thought of as a size separation, but is actually made on the basis of particle settling rate, and so is affected by any variations in particle density and shape. The fluid may be liquid (wet classification) or gas (dry or air classification). This section will treat only wet classification. There are two basic types of classification; pool and hydraulic. In pool classification a suspension of feed particles is fed into and out of a pool of some kind at such a rate that only part of them¬ the coarser and faster-settling part-has time to settle out. The remain¬der overflows as fines. In hydraulic classification the feed suspension is introduced into or above one or more columns or pockets through which water is rising at a controlled velocity. Coarse particles subside through the pockets and are removed through spigots. Those which settle slower than the rising velocity in any column or pocket are (at least ideally) prevented from subsiding and so must overflow. Hydraulic classifiers or sizers are capable of making far sharper sepa¬rations than pool classifiers. The force causing settling may be gravity, or alternatively may be from centrifugal acceleration as developed in a centrifuge or hydra cyclone. Two things are needed to characterize the separation produced by classification: first, the size, D„ or equivalently the screen mesh at which it is made; second the sharpness of separation. Separation size may be defined in various ways. In closed-circuit grinding it is commonly specified by some point in the overflow screen analysis: For example, 5% on 65 mesh. Flotation performance varies widely as feed conditions change. Maintaining metallurgical targets has proven almost impossible without automatic control. Traditional control methods and procedures are inadequate. Using on-line x-ray analyzers, reagent control and accurate froth level control with flotation models and "Expert" computer control systems has improved metallurgical performance significantly. Examples of actual plant cases are described as well as the expert system methodology.

The Premier mine has been in existence for over 75 years and is closely woven into the glamour of the history of South Africa. A note on the geological formation of the diamond pipe and the gabbro gives a clearer overall picture of the mine. Mining methods for operations above and below the gabbro sill are briefly discussed. Ventilation arrangements for mining above the sill are briefly described and possible ventilation arrangements for mining below the sill are discussed in more detail. The large volume of water used in coal preparation plants makes water recycling a necessity. Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full scale field trials supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

Bituminous coal dust was repeatedly placed into one lung lobe of anesthetized Macaca nemestrina monkeys using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. Radiographs taken at 15 day intervals showed a focal radiographic density after 90 days time when a total of 1 gram of dust had been instilled. The radiographic density progressed slightly in size until 12 months by which time 3 grams of dust had been instilled and the animals were euthanized. At necropsy, the only significant gross lesion detected was the focal black pulmonary lesion located at the dust instillation site. Histologically, the lesion was composed of coal dust laden macrophages located primarily within interstitial tissue and interspersed with a slight amount of reticulum and connective tissue fibers. The distribution of coal dust was limited to the instillation site in the right caudal lung lobe based on radiographic, gross and histologic examination. Bronchoalveolar lavage of both right and left caudal lung lobes was performed 8 times during the 12 month long experiments without significant complications. More macrophages were found in lavage fluid from the right lung than the left, and most macrophages from right lung contained coal dust particles. Based upon a limited physical examination and complete blood count at 15 day intervals the animals remained normal during the experiment. We conclude that the primate lung&apos;s response to focal experimental bituminous coal dust resulted in a marked focal increase in pulmonary alveolar macrophages, which can be recovered regularly in high numbers by bronchoalveolar lavage. The model described has significant potential for investigating the pathogenesis of various respirable dust-induced pneumoconioses, for evaluation of new therapeutic approaches, and for refining experimental and clinical diagnostic applications of bronchoalveolar lavage. The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. The proceedings volume, including a CD of the papers, is available from SME for $149 member, $139 student member and $189 nonmember.
