The performance of personal alpha dosimeters in mixed radon daughter and thoron daughter atmospheres in Ontario uranium mines is described together with monitoring developments which enable the radon daughter working level to be determined separately. The theoretical bases for continuous and integrated working level measurements based on individual and gross counts are presented in terms of the weighting factor for combining the thoron daughter working level with the radon daughter working level, and in terms of the in-growth time of the air. Implications for the determination of working level in the presence of thoron daughters are discussed.

Regardless of the mechanical design features of a particular air classifier certain basic principles apply. Specifically , there are two forces at work: 1. An air drag force 2. An inertial or centrifugal force. The air drag force has an increasing influence as particles become smaller. A very small low mass particle is easily carried along with an air stream even when turning a corner. Thus, fine particles follow the air away from the classifying zone. Inertial forces increase as the mass of a particle gets larger. Thus oversize particles tend to obey Newton's laws and respond to centrifugal forces or simply continue in a straight path when the airflow changes direction.

The increasing cost of developing new mines and the need to mine more marginal deposits have led mining companies to use more sophisticated estimation methods such as kriging. But until recently, coal mining companies have shown little or no interest in these techniques. However, the stringent quality controls which are now placed on coal have led to a surge in interest in improved estimation methods. This can be seen from the -, number of research projects by private companies and governmental agencies on the application of geostatistics to coal reserve estimation. At present, most of these programs are centered on the problem of estimating the tonnage and the average grade (i.e. ash percent, sulphur content, calorific value, etc.) of the coal in-situ. See, for example, Sabourin (1975), Woods (1976, 1979), Pauncz and Nixon (1979) and Armstrong (1980). These studies show that the established techniques of linear geostatistics can be applied successfully to coal deposits. The study by Woods is particularly interesting because he had access to the actual production figures as well as the initial sample data from the no 2 seam in the Greenside Colliery owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. He showed that the estimates obtained by kriging were consistently closer to the actual production figures than those given by three other estimation methods. This confirms the superiority of kriging as a method of estimating block values for coal. Another advantage of geostatistics is that it can be used to determine the optimal spacing between drill holes. An example of this is given by Armstrong for the coking coal deposit in the Bowen Basin, Australia.

The results of an extensive one- year test period of a nonelectric explosives detonating system led to the mine-wide adoption of this system at the Henderson Mine in early 1978. Since that time, extensive experience with nonelectric initiation has verified the earlier results which include the following benefits: 1. Increased blasting safety 2. Improved productivity 3. Cost effectiveness 4. High reliability At the present time, while electric blasting caps still experience a limited use restricted to trunkline initiation, all heading rounds as well as the longhole bell, undercut, boundary cutoff and raise blasting are detonated non-electrically. The primary blasting agent used is AN/FO, and primers are typically one of the following products (depending on application): PETN, semi-gelatin dynamites or a nonnitroglycerin water-gel slurry.

Climate change is the central challenge facing the mining industry, wherein producers must simultaneously ramp up production to provide the raw materials for clean technologies while transitioning to carbon neutrality. While transitioning to renewables will take time, mines can start improving energy efficiency while improving productivity today. This paper proposes a novel technology ecosystem that can help. By monitoring mine shovels, loaders, haul truck paths, and conveyor belts, the proposed technology enables particle size measurements throughout the operation, truck and belt volume monitoring, ground engaging tools monitoring, and boulder detection.

"INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."

Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. Continuous monitoring of carbon monoxide and other fire-related parameters by means of an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) has been used by the mining industry for early fire detection in underground mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a project to integrate real-time AMS sensor data with NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE 3.0, to simulate and predict the spread of smoke that would provide assistance to mine fire emergency response personnel. Determining the heat release rate of a fire using the monitored sensor data was a critical component of the successful completion of this project. NIOSH researchers developed a direct method to calculate the heat release rate when a fire is within close range of sensors. However, this method is only applicable to the case where a fire occurs in AMS-monitored airways. This paper presents an improved method for determining the fire heat release rate for complicated scenarios where a fire is distant from sensors and airflow splits and merges are present. The method was validated using a fullscale diesel fuel fire test conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division and can help mine operators and safety personnel make informed decisions during a fire emergency.

In recent years, there has been a growing realization of the importance of ground water as a national resource and increasing concern that this resource be properly managed and protected from a variety of pervasive practices that endanger it. Aquifers have been adversely affected in every region of the country. In dealing w.ith the underground water program, EPA will have the following objectives: to protect human health, and to protect and conserve an important national resource. In pursuing these objectives, EPA will take economic consequences and other national objectives (e.g., energy) into account. EPA intends to pursue these objectives in full partnership with the States. Generally the States should retain the lead in protecting ground water.

As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of US coal companies are developing seams previously considered too deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is wed at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations all influence the design of longwall panels. This paper examines these influences, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, on the feasibility of two-, three-, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Hecla Limited, Magee Scientific and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) combined efforts to evaluate an in situ air filtration system for use in an underground mine environment. The purpose of the collaboration was to determine the efficacy of such a technology for reducing the concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM), with the aim of improving air quality in underground hardrock mines. A secondary goal was to evaluate the use of an aethalometer as a means of real-time measurement of black carbon as a surrogate for DPM. The evaluation included measuring the DPM-capture efficiency of the filter when it was preloaded with dust. Toward this end, rock dust was introduced at the filter inlet to create a dust layer on the filter surface, with the intent of providing improved capture of the much smaller DPM particles. The filtration efficiency for DPM was assessed by comparing measurements of DPM taken at the inlet and outlet of the system, using both realtime and time-weighted-average approaches. The real-time measurements were performed with a Model AE33 aethalometer, and filter samples analyzed by the NIOSH 5040 method were used to assess the effects of the system on time-weighted-average concentrations of total carbon. Results showed a reduction in DPM concentrations in the range of 82 to 89 percent. While the calculated efficiencies based on the two different measurement methods were similar, the DPM levels reported by the aethalometer were higher, possibly due to differences in the performance of the size selectors used for the two methods: impactors versus cyclones. More research is required to develop a robust correlation between the two methods to support the use of the aethalometer in future mining applications. The advantages of the aethalometer are that it can measure and record DPM levels for weeks at a time and can be directly connected to a mine monitoring system, potentially at multiple locations. Ideally, such data can be used to initiate the startup of the filtration system should DPM concentrations reach an action level. This work demonstrated that in situ filtration systems, modified to collect DPM and coupled with real-time monitoring, show promise in reducing DPM concentrations in the mine environment.

SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. Introduction Placer deposits account for one-half to two-thirds of the total gold produced worldwide. As many as 311 t (10 million oz) have been produced from some major districts. Several others are credited with 155 t (5 million oz). All the major districts and many lesser ones have similar characteristics. Consideration of these characteristics offers insight into the origin of gold in the deposit. Knowing the gold deposit's geologic history leads to useful conclusions in exploring for placer deposits and for deposits in consolidated areas. Placer Deposit Characteristics Table 1 lists 17 placer gold districts around the world and their characteristics. These include type and age of, mineralized source rocks, associated intrusive rocks, and age of intermediate sedimentary cycles. Although quartzite or sandstone occurs in the bedrock sequence in four of the 17 districts, slates, phyllites, or schists are present in all of the districts. Additionally, in all but three, the slates are pre-Mesozoic. And, in six of the remaining 14, the slates are Precambrian. Rocks intrusive into the slates are all of intermediate to acidic composition and are emplaced as stocks, dikes, or sills, rather than being batholithic in proportions. Intermediate interceptors have not been recognized in only three of the 17 districts. Data from China and Mongolia are inconclusive as to this characteristic. Black Shale Gold Higher than average gold values are found in modern sedimentary rocks in coarse granulites, conglomerates, sandstones, and gray-wackes. Not so predictably, higher than average gold values also occur in black shales and carbonaceous argillities. Li and Shokena (1974) found that, in the Proterozoic sedimentary and equivalent metamorphic rocks of the Enisei Ridge, carbonaceous and graphitic phyllites and schists were particularly enriched in gold. Korotayeva and Polikarpochkin (1969) reported gold content in organic rocks to be enriched up to 15 times more than the organic free shales and siltstones of the Nerchinsk Zavod region of eastern Transbaikal. Black shales can be gold interceptors as are rocks of the granulite facies. Gold occurs in shales in particulate, free form, in pyrite, adsorbed on clays, and precipitated on carbon. In copper-bearing shales of Poland's Fore-Sudetic monocline, Kucha (1973) reported gold present in organic compounds as well as in silver bearing minerals. Anoshin (1969) found a strong correlation between gold and the pelitic fraction of sediments in certain rocks of the Atlantic Ocean basin. Heavy metal absorption on clays results in agglomeration to the extent that the particles settle with the heavy mineral fraction in enriched strata. Piper and Graef (1974) think that gold in sediments on the flank of the East Pacific rise is of lithogenic origin. Crockett (1973), however, proposed a volcanogenic exhalative origin. A strong correlation between gold and volcanic activity exists in rocks of the Canadian Shield where tuffaceous sediments and porphyries are more frequently enriched in gold than rocks with no volcanic components. Volcanic rocks of intermediate to acidic composition are considered here to be the primary source of gold in black shales. Gold is concentrated in shales as detrital free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), as precipitates, and in pyrite or other sulfide minerals. This is the first step in the history of gold placer deposits. Grain Size Modification Gold, as free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), is too light to be concentrated hydraulically into placer deposits. Some process has increased the average size of the gold grains. Mobilization during regional metamorphism converts most of the gold into particulate grains or entrains it in microfractures in the sulfide minerals. With moderate folding, small, white, vitreous quartz veins develop. As deformation continues, larger, more conspicuous quartz veins are formed. Optimization of a three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layout is complex given the number of variables and constraints to consider, such as the stope size. Determination of the appropriate stope size in stope layout optimization problems is a complex process that must consider several factors including placement of infrastructure and development, production scheduling, and equipment selection. An inappropriate stope layout can result in unrealistic expectations for a production schedule, consequently negatively affecting the derived economic value. Therefore, this paper used a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to evaluate the effect of stope size on the stope layout economic value (SLEV) for a synthetic Platreef mineral deposit planned for extraction using sublevel open-stoping. The results showed that generally as the stope size increases, the SLEV decreases. This aligns with practical mining because larger stope sizes have a higher chance of incurring more dilution which reduces economic value, while smaller stope sizes enable more flexible extraction where unprofitable blocks can be left unmined as waste, thus increasing the derived SLEV.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project involves the construction of a bored tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Chesapeake Bay (VA), between two artificial islands and parallel to the existing tube tunnel, built in the sixties. It will be the first transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a 44-foot-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) named "Chessie," manufactured by Herrenknecht, and which was assembled at the CBBT's southernmost island, with extremely limited room, live adjacent traffic, and difficult access. "Chessie" was successfully launched in February 2023 and this paper describes this complex and challenging process.

Under contract to the U. S. -Department of.-Interior, Office of Coal. Research, Hittman Associates recently completed a 16 month study of the environmental-factors associated with the siting, construction, and operation of large scale coal refineries. (1 2) The objective of this study was to identify the environmental effects and to define the magnitude of these effects and the approaches which can be used to mitigate adverse environmental consequences. In the study, the five major coal bearing regions of the country having reserves adequate to support a number of large scale coal refineries were considered. The regions considered were: Appalachian, Eastern Interior, Fort Union, Powder River, and Four Corners.

The Optimum Production Rate (OPR) is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of a mineral deposit. The OPR cam also be expressed as the Optimum Mime Life (OML) in years since the expected mime life is determined by dividing the OPR per year into the estimated ore reserves. Unfortunately, very little time and effort has been directed towards the determination of the OPR. Instead, "rules of thumb" are often applied to select a mime life without due consideration of the economic implications of such a selection. A "justification" for a particular production rate is often based on a pre-conceived arbitrary requirement for a mime life of 5, 10, or 15 years, for example. In this paper it is demonstrated that such arbitrary selections for high-grade/low¬-tonnage mines (such as many underground gold/silver deposits) often lead to sub¬optimal results. In fact, am apparently uneconomic deposit at am arbitrary production rate may be economic at the OPR. Consequently, investment opportunities may be overlooked if one analyzes mime' properties based on arbitrary production rates.
