Grinding and energy input in stirred media mills are studied as functions of grinding time, stirring speed, media size and density, solid concentration, impeller and tank dimensions and design, and other relevant variables. Ground product size and surface area are determined with respect to the above variables. Changes in energy input and media/pulp rheological properties during grinding are described. The best conditions for grinding limestone in the laboratory stirred media mills have been identified. Equations for correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers have been established.

Modeling a mine ventilation system is a formidable mathematical problem requiring the solution of twice as many equations as there are airways with half of these being quadratic equations. The addition of a mine fire to the problem adds many more complexities. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University attacked this problem in stages. During the 1970's and 80's, a series of computer simulation programs were developed which offered progressively increasing levels of modeling capability and accuracy. The current version of this software, MFIRE 2.0, was released in 1993. This programs provides for full dynamic state mass flow-based modeling of a mine ventilation system, and includes natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation, air reversals and recirculation, methane and fire contaminant spread, and moisture condensation and evaporation in the mass flow and heat exchange calculations. This program is a useful tool for routine ventilation planning and can significantly improve mine safety by enabling detailed quantitative analysis for mine emergency preplanning. This paper reviews the evolution of the MFIRE program from its infancy as a simple digital network simulator replacing analog computers to the present version.

INTRODUCTION The City of Oslo together with the neighbor municipalities, Baerum and Asker, are presently building a jointly owned sewage treatment plant located on the west side of the inner Oslofjord. The project is scheduled for completion late 1981. Because the location of the treatment plant is at a distance of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center, a discharge of more than 13 yds 3/sec (10 m3/sec.) of sewage and storm water will have to be transported over considerable distances. The topography of the area and the geological conditions early indicated that the only realistic transport method had to be through tunnels. As planning proceeded, full face tunnel boring emerged more and more as a favorable alternative to conventional drill and blast medhods. Today the scheme comprises nearly 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels being excavated by full face tunnel borers. In addition a number of access tunnels and cross cuts are to be excavated by conventional methods.

The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The author, in exploring a virgin area vertically in two known ore shoots requiring decline shaft sinking, drifting, crosscutting and diamond drilling, chose to use electric, electric hydraulic, and diesel rubber-tired equipment. A rebuilt hoist, and electric hydraulic shaft shovel (mucker), hydraulic sinking drills, single boom electric hydraulic jumbo, electric hydraulic LHD, and electric hydraulic diamond drill were used successfully. Slides of the equipment and its use are shown. The advantages and disadvantages of the equipment are discussed, together with costs and production.

Slope stability in open pit mines is governed by rock structure, rock quality, ground water conditions, blasting, pit geometry and excavation method. Of these factors, the control of ground water pressures often represents the primary tool to improve slope stability. Production equipment has recently been used to stabilize two slide areas by dewatering using blasthole drills for vertical holes and secondary drills for horizontal holes. This paper describes both of these dewatering programs and contrasts an earlier slope stabilization program that employed a subcontracted horizontal drill.

Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized long wall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. The RockVision3DTM seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis. This paper focuses on the application of RockVision3DTM technology for delineating hazards caused by stress and geologic anomalies. Case studies for two bump-prone coal mines will be discussed. For example, (1) in a German deep (>1,130 m) mine, the drilling-yield method was used to verify the effectiveness of this technology in detecting stress anomalies ahead of longwalling; (2) in a Polish mine (-500 m deep), two longwall panels 4 km apart were monitored to assess structural and stress-related factors contributing to differences in mining conditions and magnitude of structural failures.

The Penstock Access Tunnel (PAT) concrete plug is a reinforced concrete plug separating the pressure tunnels from the personnel accessible tunnels and has leaked since the first filling at the Helms Pumped Storage Plant located in Fresno County, California. A grouting program was successfully implemented in 2009 to reduce the leakage from PAT concrete plug from over 1,000 gpm to 25 gpm. Recent observations indicated increasing water leakage through new pathways, leading to a decision to execute a high-pressure grouting and waterproof membrane installation program in 2017. The high-pressure grouting and membrane installation program was successfully executed in the areas adjacent to the PAT concrete plug where most of the inflows originated and the largest hydraulic gradients are suspected to present. It reduced the leakage from over 300 gpm of inflow to less than 20 gpm.

Batch laboratory-scale beneficiation tests were conducted on four high-iron phosphate samples. These samples included sedimentary ores (Tilemsi Valley, Mali and Tahoua, Niger), a sample from an igneous phosphate deposit (Matongo, Burundi), and a fine-grained phosphatic iron ore processing residue from Chile. The Matongo phosphate deposit occurs as a thick (up to 80 m) residual blanket of P205-enriched soil over solid parent rock (carbonatite and associated rock types). Although the Matongo deposit is an igneous deposit, ore from the deposit can be subjected to beneficiation treatments commonly used to treat sedimentary rocks. The beneficiation flowsheets designed to process these diverse ore types involve attrition scrubbing, size classification, and flotation. At the best flotation conditions tested, phosphate concentrates assaying 32.0%-39.0% P205 and 1.0%-1.5% Fe2O3, were obtained at 64.2%-82.2% overall P2O5 recoveries from run-of-mine (ROM) ores containing 9.2%-28.6% P205 and 5.9%-16.1% F,20,. A cleaner phosphate concentrate assaying 33.1% P205, 1.8% A1203, and 3.3% Fe2O3 at 53.4% overall P205 recovery was obtained from the phosphatic iron ore residue that originally contained 4.5% P205, 8.0% A1203, and 17.6% Fe2O3.

Roof falls continue to affect productivity and safety in U.S. coal mines in spite of significant increases in support utilization in recent decades. To minimize roof stability problems while controlling support effectiveness, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on support and ground monitoring techniques. Practical implementation of this research is presented in this paper. Instruments to monitor rock mass deformation, support loads, and microseismic emissions have traditionally been used to assess roof stability. Controlled-source seismic surveys are being used as well. In this paper, measurement techniques are reviewed, and the effectiveness of deformation measurements is demonstrated. This is achieved by an analysis of deformation history from four case studies in room-and-pillar retreat mines. In spite of differences in geologic, geometric, and support conditions in these mines, roof behavior is shown to have been similar prior to failure. The rate of roof movement is suggested as a reliable indicator of roof stability.

The Gosowong epithermal quartz-adularia vein, in the Halmahera magmatic arc, is a new discovery in an area of primary tropical rain forest with no history of gold mining or mineralization. The newly recognized mineral district also contains a number of other epithermal vein systems, two centres of porphyry Cu-Au mineralization, and a number of argillic and advanced argillic alteration zones that may be related to underlying mineralization. Gosowong was discovered and tested through the application of basic exploration techniques including drainage sampling, soil sampling, trenching, magnetics, IP, and diamond drilling. Lapse time from the initial reconnaissance discovery of a stream sediment anomaly to the release of inferred resource estimates of approximately 1.0m ounces was just over 3 years.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application. A ventilation research study was conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a cooperating longwall trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming in the United States. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6  ) were conducted to describe air movement on the face and in the mined portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of gases emitted from the face and caved gob.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of phosphate ore with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity flow mixing required less residence-time, but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices will be discussed.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

The plate tectonic setting, regional geology, and certain aspects of the economic geology of the iron-rare-earth-nio-bium ore bodies at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia, China, were studied by a team of geologists from the Tianjin Geologic Research Academy and the U.s. Geological Survey between 1987 and 1989. These ore bodies were formed by hydrothermal replacement of Middle Proterozoic dolomite in an intracontinental rift setting. A variety of veins and/or dikes that have a carbonatite-like mineralogy cut the footwall clastic rocks and migmatites. A stockwork of veins occurs at several locations in the footwall. The hanging wall is a shale that has been converted to a K-metasomatite and has microcrystalline potassium feldspar as its principal constituent. This shale served as a sealing caprock that contained the chemical solutions that reacted with the dolomite and that created the enormous concentration of mineralized rock in an 18-kilometer-long syncline. The rocks that host these ore bodies and the associated mineralized areas occur today as roof pendants in granitoid rocks of Pennian age that were emplaced during a continent-to-continent collision during that period.

In 1965 Hoogovens was looking for additional capacity for burden preparation in the order of 2,5 to 3 million metric tons per annum of some kind of optimal blast furnace ore feed. In principle four solutions offered them-selves for further investigation: 1. purchase of screened ore and/or run of mine ores with the provision of a corresponding ore screening capacity on the blast furnace site; 2. manufacture of sinter; 3. purchase of pellets; 4. manufacture of pellets. After studying the technological, technical, economical and commercial factors Hoogovens decided for the last mentioned possibility. Before taking this decision not only a great number of different mixtures of iron ore were tested, but during a long period in one of the big blast furnaces a number of tests were also executed with purchased pellets from South and North America. It was found, that using 50% acid pellets with 40% basic sinter a coke rate saving of 25 kg per ton hot metal (50 lbs/net THM) and a production gain of 15% could be obtained as compared with a full sinter practice. With some pellets it became clear, that due to properties, commonly referred to as swelling, we got very poor furnace performances; so in studying the production of pellets, pellet quality should be regarded as the most important aspect of the problem.

This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC, and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room and pillar mining section. The purpose of presenting the information is to prepare mine operators for proposed legislation that will require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Specifically, machine modifications are required to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers. Cable splicing is not as complex as expected but additional materials are needed in the kit and splice training is necessary. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce the hazard of electrical shock to mine workers. This paper will present information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems that will be encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

It is well known that the chemical environment determines the success of the flotation process, however its characterization and control is difficult to achieve. This work evaluates the use of various measurements, including mineral potential measurements, in gaining an understanding of the influence of varying parameters such as the milling media and the reagent suite composition on the flotation performance of a platinum group metal (PGM) bearing ore. The results showed differences in the response of the various mineral electrodes to the different conditions, however the changes in flotation performance of the different minerals in the ore could not be wholly described by the electrochemical changes, demonstrating the limitations of these measurements.

Two-thirds of the world copper produced in 1979 incurred cash costs between $0.35 and $0.89 per lb, averaging $0.62 per lb. North American costs are higher at $0.48, $0.88, and $0.68 per lb, respectively. Variable cash costs are $0.20, $0.58, and $0.39 per lb for the world; $0.29, $0.63, and $0.46 per lb for North America. Cash costs are relevant for comparing existing operations and evaluating market pricing during periods of excess supply. Analysis of full costs of production (cash costs plus income taxes, profit, and non-cash items) becomes relevant in evaluating the incentive price required to develop new production plants. In mid-1979 this cost (incentive price) was about $1.10 per lb; it is expected to approach $2.00 per lb by 1985.
