The Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) was founded in 1949 to fill mining industry and government needs for minerals research and development. The operations of scores of mines, mills, and plants around the world are based on the results of work done by the Research Institute. Among other things, the Research Institute conducts studies in geology, mine planning, mineralogy, size reduction, minerals processing, and hydrometallurgical techniques in extractive metallurgy. Many CSMRI projects also involve energy and environmental considerations. What follows is a summary of some of the studies in which the Research Institute has been and is currently involved, as well as some comments on trends and developments in the industry.

A 3-stage fluidizing bed process of chlorination, selective oxidation and sulfur chloride conversion was tested for processing of a chalcopyrite concentrate. It was found that the use of excess oxygen was essential to a stable operation in the oxidation reactor. The oxygen-excess gas will inevitably cause the oxidation of the sulfide concentrate in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. A new flowsheet is proposed to separate the chlorination and the selective oxidation steps with separate flow paths of the fluidizing gases, thereby preventing the passage of oxygen-excess gas in the chlorination and sulfur chloride conversion reactors. The feasibility of the proposed flowsheet was demonstrated in a laboratory-scale fluidizing bed setup.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has let a contract for the excavation of three rock stations, spaced about 3550' (1082m) apart, beneath Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. Two previous rock stations have been completed, one of which had a crown pilot tunnel excavated to explore geologic conditions that would be encountered during the station excavation. This pilot tunnel was primarily for inspection by bidders and design was based on core hole information. The other rock station had no pilot tunnel and was also designed on the basis of core hole information. The three rock station areas, which are the subject of this paper, have been explored by crown pilot tunnels and an as-built report, with geologic maps and sections, has been prepared, for use by the design engineer as the basis of design for support of the structures. The geotechnical report describes the geologic structure in detail and relates it to excavation and support of the three crown pilot tunnels and the running tunnels which will be enlarged to create the 58'W x 44'H x 700'(+)L (17.6m x 13.3m x 212m +) stations. The information was complete enough to permit the design engineer to visualize the geologic structure and compute loads for the various types of rock conditions. It was therefore possible to determine the size and spacing of the steel sets for the several different conditions of rock structure encountered in the pilot tunnels.

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public's safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer's paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. Introduction The issue of coal mining safety plays an important role in the United States' growing dependence on coal to supply its future needs. This article will address the federal government's role, principally the US Bureau of Mines, in meeting this challenging growth and demand while reducing the social and economic costs attributed to injuries and fatalities in underground mining. Some interesting facts and projections with respect to the nation's energy picture will be discussed. This includes the distribution of its reserves and the projected role of coal in the energy and economics of the nation's future. Underground mining will continue to be an important means of providing this coal. The author will discuss how the Bureau of Mines' research program addresses the problems of health and safety that grow out of the demand for more coal. Future projections First, a synopsis of salient facts and projections concerning the US's situation with respect to energy and the economy. Figure 1 depicts the relative quantities of recoverable energy reserves in the United States by their type. Most people are aware of the nation's use of oil. We hear a lot about natural gas. And we are aware of the controversy over the use of nuclear energy. But, while looking at Fig. 1, the question becomes, "Where will our fuel to meet the demand for energy in the future most certainly have to come from?" With 82% of the nation's recoverable fuel reserves being coal, the answer is irrefutable. Coal will be that source. Figure 2 is the present market for coal. It shows that 77% of the coal mined goes to supply electric utilities. Therefore, the coal industry as a whole is most sensitive to the trends and demands for electricity. It is less affected by what happens in other markets, such as export and direct industrial use. In fact, the coal industry is three times more sensitive to the electric utility market than to all other markets combined. Therefore, the trend in the demand for electricity must be examined. Electricity demand is expected to increase steadily over the next 15 years. It is projected to grow from its present 2.3 trillion kWh per year to 3.5 trillion kWh per year by the year 2000. The fuel to supply this increase in demand must come from somewhere. The question is "How much of this extra fuel will be coal?" Although the demand for electricity is predicted to increase, the demand for coal does not necessarily follow. Coal must maintain its fraction of the energy sources used for electricity generation if its demand is to increase at the same or greater rate as electricity. Except for a near-term dip in demand due to a slight increase in nuclear capacity, the domestic electric generation accruing to coal will go from 56% in 1985 to more than 60% in 2005. Thus, the predicted trend is for coal to become a larger part of the fuel mix for electric power generation. Similarly, looking at the most recent forecast for total coal consumption trends, it can be seen that for electric power generation alone, the coal industry must be able to supply an additional 316 Mt/a (348.5 million stpy) by the year 2000 (Fig. 3). It must be stressed here, though, that without significant improvements in mining safety, it can also be easily predicted that injuries and fatalities will increase in proportion to the increase in coal production. Will society consider that acceptable? This author does not believe so. Figure 4 examines the effect of coal prices on the price of electricity. The projections show that the already high proportion of fuel cost will become a greater fraction of the consumer price for electricity. Specifically in 1985, 36% of the price of electricity was the cost of the fuel. In 1995, 46% of the price of electricity will be the fuel cost. That implies that the price of coal will have an increasing influence on the consumer price for electricity. Thus, as coal is used more to generate electricity and as fuel becomes a greater

Around the world, mining has been done for thousands of years for the benefit of humankind. The winning process in mining operations ends with the depletion of the deposit or its closure if the operation becomes economically unprofitable. After that, a period of post-mining follows which may last for a very long time and which is generally regarded as a period of hazards, risk and high cost. In the USA alone, approximately 500,000 abandoned mines do exist; worldwide, there are millions. In Germany, too, we have had to deal with abandoned mines for a considerable period of time now.

The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

Introduction More and more women engineers are joining the traditionally male mining industry. Are they successful? Do they encounter special problems? How do men in mining respond? How can the mining industry effectively use its female resources? What contributes to the success of a woman in mining? What can male engineers do to ease the entry of female professionals into the workforce? An STM survey conducted last spring provided some answers to these questions. All BS graduates in mining, mineral engineering, and extractive metallurgy from 1960-1979 were surveyed. Nearly 60% of the female graduates, from 17 universities, completed questionnaires. The women were asked why they chose mining, how they relate to predominantly male co-workers, what job skills they have gained, and what areas of work they most enjoy. They were also asked how problems of a two-career family are solved. Data were gathered on salaries, titles, specialties, and products handled. Respondents, assured of confidentiality, are identified only by title. Many male mining executives were also questioned for their advice to women in mining. Profile of the Survey Participant The "typical" female mining engineer works with coal, is employed by an operating company, feels she works very hard to prove her abilities, does not want to be treated as an anomaly, and someday wants to be an independent consultant. Of the respondents, 44% listed coal as the most familiar product, 12% said copper, and the rest listed products from industrial chemicals to oil. Titles varied widely but women managers are rarely found. However, the majority of the survey population graduated after 1976 and thus lacks substantial experience. Of 102 female graduates, only 25 graduated before 1977. Since then, there has been a steady increase. The American Association of Engineering Societies reported that in 1980 more than 100 degrees were awarded to women in minerals engineering. Education Highly Valued Twenty-two percent of the women surveyed had graduate degrees, 38% planned further education, and 12% listed a PhD as their goal. The majority of graduate degrees are in technical fields. There were only two MBAs. Five women intended to pursue law degrees, and one woman, with a mining engineering degree and an MBA, is a part-time law student. Along with advanced education, the women agree that production experience is needed for career advancement. However, only 28% of the women have worked in production. Many women, especially younger grads, commented that these are the toughest jobs to get. This is a universal complaint, from males as well as females, though women seem to encounter more opposition. Several women mentioned they were small or slight of build and managers tended to shy away from hiring them for production jobs. Two-Career Marriages The most difficult problem for two-career couples is relocation. Whose career takes priority? Fifty percent of the women said transfers or offers would be examined on a case-by-case basis, weighing pros and cons for both parties. The husband's career took priority with 47% of the women; their own careers, with 3%. These statistics conflict with comments from two employee relations managers. Both said most female engineers they've encountered are married to men who follow their wives' careers. Seventy per cent of the married respondents said their husbands were also engineers. Four said their husbands were engineers at the same company. Some male and female engineers met on the job; others joined the company as a "package deal." Both partners being engineers can ease relocation problems, since an area or company offering one spouse a job can often provide a spot for the other. A company may benefit by getting two new hires for the relocation costs of one. Most companies contacted have policies that allow married couples to work at the same division, but discouraged them from working in the same department. With 40% of today's marriages ending in divorce, one risk is that one or both parties may quit. One personnel executive said there were several couples, each spouse in a different discipline, who were work¬ing out very well at his division. However, he recognized the potential for problems if, for instance, one gets promoted and the other doesn't, or salary increases are unequal. The personnel executive said he has actively recruited married couples, and would again, were each person competent.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential health risk associated with exposure of dozer operators to whole-body vibration. Measurements were made on 31 dozers used in different surface mines in Turkey. Predictions of adverse health effects of vibration were based on the standards BS 6841:1987, ISO 2631–1:1997, ISO 2631–5:2004, and the EU Vibration Directive:2002. Operators experienced high and comparable levels of vibration acceleration and dose during all dozer tasks: pushing the material (DOZE), moving forward (FORWARD), moving backward (REVERSE), and ripping (RIP). Specifically, DOZE, FORWARD, REVERSE, and RIP showed high potential of adverse health effects in terms of vibration dose according to the worst-case axis and vector sum criteria and a moderate adverse health effect for acceleration according to the worst-case axis criterion. Operators of large dozers were exposed to lower levels of vibration. However, no statistically significant relationship between vibration exposure levels and the propelling mechanism and the service time of dozers, operator experience, operator age, and ground type was found.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. PROJECT DESCRIPTION In total the land portion of the conveyance system will include approximately21 Km (13 miles) of tunnels ranging in size from 3.0 to 5.2 M (10 to 17 ft) minimum inside diameter with overburden depths of 30.0 to 168 M (100 to 550 ft) and

The Woodbury L-73 Tunnel involved the design and construction of a 96-inch tunnel driven through 8,080 lf of very difficult ground conditions. Anticipated ground and groundwater conditions consisted of potentially flowing silty sand with cobbles and boulders, mixed face of sand and sandstone and full face of the St. Peter Sandstone. Actual conditions were similar, although the quantities did change from bid quantities. This paper presents the approach used for development of the GBR regarding risk management. The means of arriving at a fair compensation for variances from the baseline values to address the actual encountered tunneling behavior of the soil, boulder count and its effect on production rates are presented.

This paper describes the driving of a 400 m long by 25 m diameter highway tunnel through sensitive, overconsolidated silts and clays. The design concept requires the construction of the permanent support system, consisting of 24 concrete filled perimeter drifts, before excavating the mass core. General construction procedures used during the construction of the perimeter drifts are described.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

Introduction Examining the short- and long-term job prospects for engineers in the coal industry might include looking at coal tonnage projections, future export markets, federal regulations, and the decrease in overall graduates. But coal is the US most competitive basic industry. As such, why not go back to basics? That is, there are three basic challenges that need to be faced by students, faculty, and members of the coal industry. These challenges are counseling, career placement, and professionalism. Counseling Counseling can include elementary, high school, and college students, as well as individuals already employed. But what happens to students after they have selected a course of study at a particular university? As shown in Fig. 1, only 87,000, or 7.25% of our graduates have technical degrees. Generally, there is a strong market projected for these engineering graduates. However, many students who have majored in other nontechnical curriculums, have to scramble for jobs. This says something about our ability to make students aware of where the real job opportunities are. As a student spends four or five years pursuing a degree, he or she is looking for professional guidance. The student has the right to expect "real world" counseling - counseling that is not "the way it should be" but "the way it is." The influence of faculty members is significant. They should take this long opportunity to tell students not what they want to hear or what the problem's of academia or the industry are, but what the real job market is all about. If faculty do not use this opportunity, they in-advertently-through omission - mislead their students. Once a student graduates and is a working alumnus, faculty should take advantage of their relationship with the student and continue to stimulate conversation leading to a two-way exchange of ideas and information. Faculty should also encourage and solicit financial support for their mining departments from their alumni. These monies, in many cases, will be matched dollar for dollar or more, depending on the company the alumnus works for. In the private sector, the responsibility is to communicate with faculty and students. Alumni can be effective by participating in this two-way dialogue with their professors at meetings, technical seminars, and conventions. In many cases, alumni will employ summer or co-op students in their organizations. While getting to know these students, industry members should level with them on where the true opportunities are and what it takes to be successful. It is important to communicate with both faculty and students candidly on both the posi-

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.
